Quebec City, Old City Sketches

FORWARD The UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Old City, and the neighborhood surrounding la Maison Ursulines is home to an incredible number of wonderful sights and destinations. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is a very small area. It contains only Upper Town ...within the rampart walls (the location of la Maison Ursulines) and Lower Town (Old Port) ...a few streets between the rampant walls and the Ste. Lawrence.

While very small in horizontal area, only 1.4 sq. kl (0.54 sq. mi.), the vertical change in height from the Ste. Lawrence to the National Parliament Building (just West of Upper Town’s Ste. Louis Gate) is very impressive, approximately 98 m (322 ft.) Therefore, much of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Old City is literally walking up or down.

The many narrow one-way vehicle accessible streets (always seemingly heading away from your destination) and the many pedestrian-only streets all point to one solution ...walk, stroll and explore the city at a leisurely foot-pace. Enjoy a sidewalk cafe, hop onto an Old City Local bus (RTC Route 21) for the up-hill return or a horse carriage along the way ...enjoy la Belle Ville de Quebec to it’s fullest!

La Maison Ursulines is located at the very center of the UNESCO World Heritage Site; the monument to education, just beyond the front door.

The Old City is the perfect walking /strolling town; but it’s also a driving nightmare.
