Once upon today …in Europe
About the project •
•
With the project “Once upon today…in Europe” we are inviting participants to think about history, memory, and identity. The project focuses on issues of belonging and identity in Europe. What narratives about Europe are prevalent in different local, national or other commemorative cultures? Which aspects are suppressed and which ones highlighted? How can European history be told in a way that fosters mutual understanding in Europe and brings people together? Students will try to find answers to these questions through doing research about important events that took place in their towns in the 19-20th centuries, they will share the origins of their towns’ names and legends which then will be illustrated. They will try to find some hidden stories or ‘mystery clad in marble’. They will create The Gallery of Glory depicting famous people who come from or worked in their towns. And finally they wiil discuss the burning issues common to the whole of Europe, comparing and analising.

By Kateryna Zakernychna, Smila Lyceum, Ukraine Driving along the main street of Smila, one can’t but notice the great unfinished construction which was supposed to house a garment factory. The building was started in 1983 and had many owners and everyone had the great plans for it. So, why is it still unfinished? The problem lies in the fact that in XIX century there was Lutheran church with churchyard on that area. During the first and second World Wars many German soldiers were buried there. Later, there was a shop, gas station, a football field on that place. But everything was located on crypts. In the early eighties soviet government decided to build there a garment factory. All the constructions were demolished on that area. Before the construction process, churchyard was moved to the village of Ploske. But they say that dead people were not reburied. So, construction started but it was not finished . This building is considered to be dangerous and emergency now. Since then it has become a shelter for the homeless and the place of suicides. Accidents are frequent on that spot. People consider that place to be damned even though the Lutheran churchyard had been destructed. They say that ghost of people buried there can’t find peace and revenge people.
The Blue Palace of Cherkasy. (Chaliapin and hotel Cat) The Blue Palace is the building of the former Slavyanskaya Hotel. Her authorship is also attributed to Gorodetsky. On the first floor, where the Zeiger watch shop was located. and the confectionery "Constantinople", and now the decor of the cornices and rosettes and capitals of columns, decorated with leaves of the lotus and acanthus. The rooms of the hotel on the second floor are in the Viennese style, many famous and rich people stopped there. This building is a decoration of our city. The Blue Palace is a romantic name given by the people to the house. The house is a two-storey building. The house is built using romantic neo-gothic style. The facades of the building are oversaturated with dĂŠcor. The windows are made of narrow slits, rectangular on the first and arched on the second floor. The central entrance ends with a tower that is directed to the sky, which, like a necklace, framed around the little ones. As already mentioned, the exact date of construction is unknown. Also, the construction contractor is not completely aware. Most tends to the fact that the palace was created for the Cherkassy businessman Adrian Nikitovich Scherbyna - a Cherkassy engineer, a member of the city duma, a grabard, was the customer of the construction of the palace. So, on the first floor he opened the hotel called "Slavic". The rooms were decorated in a Viennese aristocratic style and were incredibly beautiful. Perhaps it stopped Chaliapin himself. And it is also possible that the cat who drove a lost voice to the brilliant singer was living here (see below). There is also a legend about this house. About Shaliapin and a cat. Although it is reliable and not known whether Chaliapin was in Cherkassy, it is still interesting. Here is this legend: "Cat was seen at the hotel by Chaliapin when preparing for a performance in Cherkassy. The cat 's t witching was so good and loud and melodious that the famous singer drew attention to him, praised the beautiful baritone and treated him with the fish. After a concert Chaliapin, suddenly felt worst, the voice disappeared. The hotel manager began to seek medicine and even came to the city council with anxiety. Annoyed at the cat, who was lounging under his feet and prevented to save the country's great voice, he threw it away with his foot. The singer saw this, and brought him to his room. Subsequently, without waiting for the medicine, the singer drank cognac with the egg and went to bed. When he woke up, he was healthy and in good mood. And most importantly - his voice not only came back, but sounded more than ever powerful and melodic. Since then, the cat has become a favorite of the hotel guests, and everyone who wanted to even bite his beloved under the guitar under the guitar, wanted to pat the gray behind the ears, because the voice after him, they said, became truly "Chaliapin".
THE STORY OF DŻOK In summer 1992, an elderly man with a dog, was walking on the busy Grunwaldzkie Roundabout in Krakow. At some moment the man fainted and fell down. He was soon surrounded by people. An ambulance was called. The doctor diagnosed a heart attack and the man was brought into the ambulance and the dog, which was uneasily running around, was left behind. Unfortunately, despite resuscitation, the man died in the car. The story not unheard of, but it was at this moment another one began. The story of a yearlong ordeal of a dog, left behind while his dying master was driven away. In the beginning, he wandered aimlessly in the vicinity of the site of the incident, unable to understand what had happened to his owner. He was escaping from passing cars, not knowing what to do. It lasted many hours. Nobody cared about the dog, drivers cursed him. Night came, traffic eased, and the dog did not leave. Next morning the dog was there. Another day passed, and another and the dog was still there, choosing the lawn in the very middle of the roundabout as a place to sleep and rest. Hundreds of cars and lots of trams went passed him every hour. The dog remained on his post. A week passed, than another. Neither thunderstorms nor heat could make him go. At night, when the streets were quieter, he ate from bins at the close tram stops. Finally, Krakow Animal Shelter was called. A few attempts were made to catch the dog and take him to the shelter but they were unsuccessful. Dżok, because that is how he came to be called, cleverly avoided the oppressors and came back to his post. He became thin and dirty but he never stopped waiting for his late master to come back. Weeks and months went by. Rainy autumn was followed by cold and snowy winter. Dżok became part of the landscape and people came to Grunwaldzkie Roundabout on purpose, just to see him. Someone built an improvised kennel for him on the lawn. Many fed him but he was careful. He cought the food and ran away instantly. He trusted only one person, an elderly lady, who lived in the neighbourhood and regularly brought him food. It was Mrs Maria Miller. She was not rich, but she shared with Dżok what she had. Thanks to her help, the dog survived the frosty winter, never leaving the place where he saw his master for the last time. Dżok became more and more popular. Newspapers wrote about him, radio programs were devoted to him, his photograph was once on the cover of a popular opinion magazine. Spring came. Dżok became even more attached to Mrs Maria, who visited him a few times a day and brought him food. She always came with her little dog, Kajtek, whom Dżok also befriended. Apparently, Kajtek, in their dogs’ language, convinced Dżok to trust Mrs Maria because when summer came, precisely a year since his “duty” on the roundabout started, Dżok went home with her and stayed for good.
And yet, it is not the end of the story of love and loyalty. Dżok lived with Mrs Maria and Kajtek for six years, and when it seemed that the old dog would live his days by the side of a loving owner, Mrs Maria died. She left nothing behind except for two mourning dogs. The flat had to be emptied immediately. Dżok and Kajtek were taken to the shelter with the intention of finding a new home for them. But Dżok did not wait. At night, he dug a tunnel under the fence and escaped. Sometime later he was found dead on railway tracks several kilometers away. Some say that in that way Dżok wanted to meet his mistress because he did not want to ever love another human. How true this is – we will never know. The fact is that a dog’s love is unconditional. There appeared an initiative to build a Dog’s Monument, based on the story of Dżok. The location chosen was not accidental – at the foot of the Wawel Castle, by the Vistula River, only a few hundred metres from the place where Dżok spent a year, waiting in vain for his master. The monument is embraced by human hands, which, in the words of the artist, shows the loving and caring relationship between the two.
