Jana’ NOIR Magazine 12
Boyd P h o t o g r a p h e r Hello! My name is Jana’ Boyd. I am a rising senior graphic design major at ECSU. I am also on the bowling and volleyball team. I am from Charlotte, NC. I am currently a young entrepreneur. My business is called Vibrant Creations where I make logos, flyers, posters, tattoo sketches, videos, and even photoshoots. As an artist, I want to inspire others to make the best out of their own art. No matter if it is a sport, a job, or even a passion. My art style can be described as unique and vibrant. My art is influenced by M.C. Escher because he took the ordinary and transformed it to where it becomes a completely different piece. His use of patterns and strokes to create depth and precision is what inspired me to create the work that I do. Art is more to me than just drawing, designing, or painting that piece; I consume myself into that job as if my life depended on it. That may be overdramatic but, I feel that if you have a true passion for something, you are willing to put all the blood , sweat, and tears to create something
that makes you feel like you did your best in the end. My art is filled with love and determination to inspire others and to bring a smile on someone’s face I am currently obsessed with taking pictures and getting different angles. I have been practicing with action shots and getting different angles. I really love taking sport shots because being an athlete, I love to see others that have a true passion for their sport and I try to capture those moments. The shot of the Charlotte Skyline was my very first picture with my first personal digital camera and my first time taking a real nice shot. I feel that this shot was a great way to start out my photography career. I love my city and what better way than to explore the city and finding the beautiful things it has to offer. Most people want to leave their city and get away but I want to get closer with it and see what else I can explore.
Jana’ This night shot was in Elizabeth City, NC where I was watching the sun go down and thought that would be the perfect picture. I really love this shot because like my business, this picture brings out the vibrant around Elizabeth City, NC. If you know anything about Elizabeth City, its not that much around but when you start to learn the places and the people there, it will give the feeling of home and that’s what I feel when I look at this photo. It soothes me and gives me a sense a peace.

Smoke “Exhale”
Boys will be boys they say... But what happens when those boys grow to be men... They inhale reality and escape realism... Exhale... Cradling loins between canines and gripping a-hold of divinity... He fiends for prophetic Muse’s undoubtedly as if his taste buds were a simulation for thinking... Exhale... Blasphemous thoughts and Renegade Hearts aren’t meant to scratch beneath the surface of broken men... So he goes back to square one... Exhale... Who knew the taste of semen could taste so colorful at room temperature, he was curious... Euphoric chemical imbalances caused him to fixate on inhumanity... Exhale... Darkness reminded him that being lonely and alone felt good sometimes... He knew language had its problems so he had a problem expressing his language... Exhale... See blacks weren’t blessed to walk on water, so they chose eggshells... But bruised backs get old and Galactic memories become cold... He had the world in his eyes yet nothing tangible in his soul... Exhale... He felt like being black was as easy as breathing but he never understood the hurt he inhaled while breathing... He drowned himself in if-then statements, scarfing down comical lies of mislead arbitration... Exhale... Dark rooms and incense filled traps have polluted his eyes, he wanted to feel alive... but boys will be boys they said... So he inhales their lies, opens his eyes, then wonders how he ever became a man... Exhale.

Denim For years denim has been apart of fashion... People attend to follow the latest fashion trends to keep up with society. A lot of people will judge you off of your fashion appearance, like back in the days when the holes was ripped in the jeans i use to think people was less fortune than others, I didn’t have holey jeans growing up but in today’s time holey an distressed jeans are a trend.

M o d e l Fresh onto the scene and taking over the Queen City by storm. Meet upcoming Charlotte model Tricia Milward. Tricia is a New York native of Afro-Jamaican descendent who’s known for her androgynous look and likeness to international superstar and fashion icon Grace Jones. Tricia got into the art of modeling after years of working at the airport to which passengers would ask her on a daily basis if she was a model or if she had representation and if she didn’t she should. “What do you have to lose”? One passenger asked to which her response was “nothing” and so the pursuit began. Tricia has since been gaining mainstream notability and has a team of gurus shaping, steering and guiding this phenomenon that is her. Hoping to join the ranks of Iman, Beverly Johnson, Naomi Campbell and of course Grace Jones this beauty is ready to “werk” and pose her way to the top.

Born in 1965, Kevin Harris of Washington, DC, and Harlem, NY cultures. He spent most of his childhood in Washington, where he was raised by his father and his summers in Harlem with his mother. Such a diversity of cultures goes a long way in explaining who he has become as an artist. Kevin’s art is an amalgamation of styles across artistic genres. A self-professed growth junkie, Kevin has consistently pushed himself artistically to learn something new with each piece of art he creates. Kevin has taken 2 college level art classes under the tutelage of UMUC art instructor Joan Bevelaqua, however, he can be classified as self-taught as he has chosen to pursue his own brand of development by consistently challenging himself to get better. His mediums of choice are soft pastels and oil paints. As a US Army Veteran, Kevin takes a very tactical approach to his work. His creative time is extremely regimented as he knows the benefits of complete focus on his task. He is meticulous about finishing one painting at a time before moving on to the next one. This process based approach has allowed a certain economy as it relates to his completion rate. He is very mindful of making the work his reward and seeks excellence as opposed to sales. Kevin currently has paintings consigned to multiple galleries in Charlotte, NC and has displayed his work at numerous events throughout the east coast in cities like Charlotte, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Washington. Kevin’s work has also been featured in Art & Beyond Magazine. Additionally, he has self-published numerous books of his pastel portraiture and oil paintings. He currently resides in Charlotte, NC with his wife and 3 children.

Each work of art represents the feeling of flow. Flow represents the most important key theme of Philip’s artwork expressed using different media. If one looks closely, they will find that everything falls from top to bottom. This is something that has meaning. The fall from top to bottom is the climax and comedown over the flow of creation. The viewer of this piece will see a buildup of energy and fall into this work while viewing this piece. Work has feeling, expression, and reaction. These are the most important parts of an artist’ work.

Out To Lunch
With ImaniMonique
Join our personal food critic, ImaniMonique, as she highlights hidden talent in the food industry!
Chef Imesha Wells Interview – 3.20.17 Imesha Wells, born and raised in Tifton, G.A. is a self-taught cook based in Atlanta. Recently, she has gained the love and respect of some locals by way of private catering. Well known for creating colorfully bold dishes, her Instagram pictures #ChefWells are matched with an exciting flavorful taste. Chef Wells quickly gained notoriety within the city of Atlanta by offering weekly menus and personally delivering them to her customers. Out to Lunch sat down with the chef after another busy weekend of catering. Chef, thank you for taking the time. I know you had a pretty busy weekend. What event did you cater for this weekend? I catered a big birthday party; dinner and breakfast. Shout out to Cydney @total_liberation and Courtney @_codiddy. I catered Cydney’s birthday party, an adult slumber party. The party went viral as #TheATLOrgy. I catered the party and it was amazing. The vibe was great. Great people, fun people and good energy. It was nothing negative about it at all.
Just get it done. Get it done. Once it’s over that’s it. All the stressing and anxiety, that’s going to happen. Does it ever go away or is it apart of your creative process? It has to go away. It may be. It maybe a part of my process because once I get over being overwhelmed, it’s all good. Would I like for that process to be a little different? Yes. I need to be in a place to where I can calm my mind. I need to learn to relax. For the amateur cooks that question their ability to take on larger catering projects; they doubt their abilities, what advice do you have for them? (Chef shakes her head in disbelief) You’re shaking your head but some people truly battle with this type of doubt.
How many people were you prepared to cook for? 65.
There is a reason people are calling you and asking for your services.
Do you still consider yourself “up and coming”? Are you at beginner, an intermediate, or an expert level?
Good point.
How long can I continue to say, “this is the only the beginning”? Because its already happening. I don’t know if that places me at a “beginner” or an “intermediate” level. It is what it is. If I feel like I’m able to step up to the plate, I’m going to do that. Every event is a learning lesson. You figure out what you can do better the next time, and execute everything. You do everything yourself. You prep your food and you cook your food. How do you avoid becoming overwhelmed?
NOIR Magazine 104
If people didn’t think you could do the job, they wouldn’t ask. You just have to believe that everything you want is coming your way. If you start out small, catering ten people then randomly somebody calls and asks for you to cater 200 people there is a reason why. Obviously, somewhere on the inside you are equipped to get that job done. I went from catering a barbershop to someone asking me to cater for 300 people. It’s something about my food that makes you want my services. If I need more people to help me create a successful event, the universe will send me those people.
It sounds like although your creative process may be overwhelming, you go with it and maintain a strong belief in yourself. Of course. Yes, I have my moments when I’m in shams. Ultimately, my belief in myself overpowers my doubts. I believe in myself and that over powers any of the doubts. Do you enjoy eating out? I love trying different foods. I go into restaurants with an open mind. If something doesn’t taste good I’m learning not to sike myself into enjoying the dish. How many times will you send a dish back, if you’re not satisfied with it? Two maximum. After the second time, there is no reason for me to sike myself out into ordering a third time. Is it disrespectful to ask a chef to add an additional or different ingredient to a dish?
I plan to have a restaurant or at least be in a position to cater full time. I plan on being self-employed. What does success mean to you? Success means being happy and genuinely doing what I love to do. Choosing to be happy. Choosing to be selfish. Allowing great things to happen to you. Being at peace. Growing up, we are trained to care about what others think about us. That can sometimes get us confused and mixed up. Caring about the way you feel brings on success. What do you want people to know about Chef Wells? I just want people to know that they’re about to have an amazing explosion mouth experience. If you’re ready to eat some good food. Contact me. Chef Wells, Thank you. Much success on your future endeavors. Keep creating good food.
I’m learning about different chefs. Some of them don’t like to feel like you’re stepping on their toes. How would you feel if you witnessed someone adding ingredients your dish? Honestly, that is something that has never happened. I feel like if someone needs to add something to my food, I need to check my food. So, it would bother you? It may, I would want to know what was missing. I take pride in my food. Where do you see Chef Wells in two years?

By: Deonte Wilbourn Project VI (PVI) is a 6 series project consisting of 36 pictures. The project will mainly be about the “wars” we as mankind all over the world fight on a regular basis. Rather it’s our cultural differences, ethnicity, gender classification, our skin tone, economy, orientation, etc. We fight them on a daily basis. The world we live in now bases so much precedent on the way we look, we begin to divide ourselves by that. Project VI is an attempt to break down those barriers. To uplift everyone and unify to prosper in this economy together.
