NEW HEAD AT THE HELM Tewkesbury School’s new head teacher, Gary Watson, is enjoying the challenges of leadership after taking up his new role at the start of the year.

Mr Watson, who is married with three children, has a wealth of experience gained in local schools including Pate’s Grammar School in Cheltenham and Sir Thomas Rich's in Gloucester Mr Watson commented in a recent school newsletter: “I am most impressed with the warmth of the Gary Watson professional relationship between students and staff, and the quality of teaching and learning. WANTED IN TEWKESBURY: WILD BILL HICKOCK Tewkesbury’s Manor Players are seeking budding actors to star in their spring production of the musical Calamity Jane.

Auditions are being held at Cotteswold Dairy on Wednesday 4th January, for the parts of Wild Bull Hickock, Lieut. Danny Gillmartin and Katie Brown. The show will take place at the Watson Hall from 25th-28th April.

Tewkesbury town centre was transformed into a buzzing market place when market stalls and farmers’ market arrived in town last month. Shoppers were treated to a selection of fine fare including handmade chocolates and cup cakes during the Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Lights event.

With an array of gifts and hand crafted goods shoppers were spoilt for choice.

Yvonne Everest of Chocolate Tree commented “the street was bursting with people and trade was really brisk”. Amanda Orton of Pretty Special Boutique added “It was lovely to see so many smiley faces in Tewkesbury."

Nickie PhillipsonStowe, from the Orange Pig, said “The High Street was packed and the extra stalls of the festive market really seemed to appeal to shoppers.”

Fund raiser and valued supporter of the lights Margaret White commented that one café had reported its busiest ever day.

“Above all we’d like to thank all the people of Tewkesbury for shopping local this year and every year.”

A plethora of talented performers brought together by professional entertainer Jon Benns come to the are lined up for the Town Mayor’s Charity Show this month.

An evening of entertainment featuring local musicians, singers and actors will take place at The Roses Theatre on Sunday 29th January at 7.30pm.

Mayor Cllr. Chuck Pavey and Mayoress Mrs Anne Baylis are sure it will be a fabulous showcase of entertainment.

It will be a nostalgic experience for Mayor Chuck as he worked as an electrician at the theatre prior to its opening in 1975 and subsequently carried out annual electric safety testing.

Proceeds of the event go to Chuck and Anne’s chosen charities: 3rd Tewkesbury Scouts, Friends of Victoria Gardens, Tewkesbury Colts, Tewkesbury Maritime Volunteers, The Elizabeth Wyatt House and NASS for research into arthritic diseases.

NATIONAL TOUR TO START IN TEWKESBURY Celebrating their 45th anniversary as one of the most entertaining bands on the live music scene, Fairport Convention present their first album in four years on a special night at the Roses Theatre.

Fairport begin their national tour here on Wednesday 25th January at 7.30pm.

Winners of a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002, the band are considered to be the founders of British FolkRock music. Their album ‘Liege and Lief’ was named the most influential folk album of all time

BIRTH STONE OF THE MONTH If you want to start the New Year with a smoulder, red garnet is the stone to wear – and if you were born in January, this is your birthstone!

The name ‘garnet’ hails from the Latin word granatus, meaning ‘seeded’, due to the seed-like appearance of some garnets within their host rocks.

The well-known red garnet is called ‘pyrope’, after the Greek word for ‘fiery’, to distinguish it from garnets of other colours; and its orangered hue puts it among the very warmest of gems – which surely accounts for its large fan base!

There are sources of garnets dotted across all continents, although a green variety known as Tsavorite, discovered in the 1960’s, can only be found in East Africa.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS COLLISION At Vale Wildlife Hospital we do not deal with a large number of swans as there are various swan rescue facilities already in the area and we do not have adequate facilities for caring for large water birds, writes Caroline Gould.

However, we do always try to work with other centres for the good of any wildlife so if a call comes in to a swan needing help near to Beckford, we will always help out if possible.

One such call came in regarding a swan needing help in Evesham. A few days earlier the Christmas lights had been put up around the town and this included a string of lights being erected across the river

bridge. Unfortunately a young swan, not used to this new obstacle, had collided with the lights when flying in to land on the River Avon.

Although in shock, the swan had luckily not sustained any serious injuries and the caller had sensibly moved it away from the busy road into a small nearby car park.

CARBON MONOXIDE: WHY IT SHOULDN’T BE IN THE HOME Carbon monoxide is a by-product of combustion and is a poison which can occur in the home. It is odourless and colour less and its presence is the result of a poorly maintained heating system, which could be gas, solid fuel or oil.

“Lets support our youngsters" writes Victoria Gardener. “We are living in in uncertain economic times with employment running at high levels. The latest figures show youth employment has reached the one million mark.”

On a more local level there is more positive news as we head into 2012, Tewkesbury Borough Council and Job Centre Plus are working together to launch O p p o r t u n i t y Tewkesbury.

They are working with local employers and a variety of partner organisations to ensure at least 200 young unemployed jobseekers are secured employment.

So how can we help our youngsters? If you are a small business it may not be practical for you to offer an apprenticeship, but do think about alternative ways you could help such as offering a week of work experience.

Or you could agree to sit on an interview panel during a mock interview to enable a youngster to gain valuable interview skills.

As a parent you could approach your own employer to ascertain whether it would be acceptable for you to bring your son or daughter into work.

Without work experience, it is difficult for young people to make realistic decisions about their future careers.

Local schools always welcome local business people into school to talk to students.

If you can spare a couple of hours to talk about your work, you may inspire a young student into a career they had never previously considered!

Accommodating up to seven senior citizens, Abbeyfield House has a resident housekeeper who provides two meals a day, and supportive services.

Yet the residents are expected to be able to look after themselves and lead independent lives. There are many Abbeyfield houses throughout the UK and around the world, some run as Care Homes from a central organisation, while others, like the Tewkesbury house, are independently run offering support and companionship.

There is a committee of volunteer Trustees who receive no financial support from central government.

The latest resident to arrive at Abbeyfield House is Alfred Moore, who has returned to the UK from Australia.

Alfred chose to re-settle in Tewkesbury to be near his daughter, Peggy Clatworthy. "Abbeyfield is an ideal place for me to live; it has a great friendly and caring atmosphere and the food is good. I also have one of the best views in Tewkesbury," said Alfred.

For many years Alfred worked with the Bristol Aircraft Company, spending time doing test work on planes such as the Britannia. He emigrated to Australia to work for the Air Accident Investigation Service.

PHILIPPA’S RIDE NETS £4000 Tewkesbury Abbey’s executive officer Philippa Shaw has return from her epic fund raising cycle journey. Together with her son Rob, she joined other riders making a three hundred mile fund-raising trip from Vietnam to Cambodia.

“We knew we had raised around £4,000 for the Abbey thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and from the events we had organised, but we still actually had to do the riding. Rob, at 17 was supremely confident but I wasn’t!”, said Philippa.

“The cycling was tough, mainly because of the heat and humidity, but with some help from other riders and each other we both made it through. I was very pleased to see the finish line at Ankor Wat. The Cambodians were building their temple at the same time as the Normans were constructing Tewkesbury Abbey and it gave our trip a nice symmetry to start and finish at 12 century buildings of national importance.”

QR CODES COULD SAVE LIVES “It’s very encouraging to see the number of work related accidents is on the decline,” says Graham Higdon of Atlantic Coast Studios. “But there are still around 150 needless fatalities in the workplace every single year in the UK".

Graham’s company based in Station Drive, Bredon offers screen and digital printing services to produce high quality vinyl labels and stickers. One of ACS’s largest customer bases is the construction plant hire industry, where work related accidents are almost as high as in the agricultural sector. At this time of year, especially if there’s snow, the news is full of it:- delays that is, due to accidents, abandoned cars blocking the roads and general chaos, when just a couple of inches of the white slippery stuff has fallen.

Why is this?

It doesn’t happen in Switzerland, Austria and other snowy countries, that have 10 times the amount we have, so what are we doing wrong?

Well, they know it’s coming; they’re used to it and they’re prepared for it, whereas we’re not. So, how or what to learn to prevent ending up stuck in a snow drift – or worse!? Worry not, as help is at hand, because there are a few things you can do to dramatically improve your chances of not only staying on the highway, but also of getting you to your intended destination, without resorting to a long walk!

Ok, in order to improve traction, we need weight centred over the driving wheels – and to this end we’re now quite lucky, as most cars these days are front wheel drive and that’s where the engine sits, so plenty of weight there. So far, so good, but that’s not enough.

tyres. The difference they make over standard road tyres is staggering! In fact, it’s often the difference between getting up a hill or not – BUT, remove them before the weather turns warm, otherwise, because of their construction, they will overheat and wear very quickly.

(Having a spare pair of wheels in the garage, saves the mucking about of tyre swapping).

Another trick, if you find yourself stranded on a hill and unable to climb, (as I did once in a Mini), is to turn the car round and reverse all the way up – It works! (Weight transference and all that).

portion to your temper fraying; I say: forget it!

They do work well though on rear wheel drive cars, which ordinarily are completely useless in snow. Now I like BMW’s, but they’re all rear wheel drive (I know, not the ‘X’ series!) and if you’re lucky enough to own an M3, 5 or 6, just put it away in the garage, shut the doors and don’t even look at it again until the snow’s disappeared!

So that’s how to keep going, but what do you do if you get stuck? Your best bet is to keep the wheels straight, (I’ll explain in a minute), and rock the car backwards and forwards, by a bit of deft clutch and accelerator action until you flatten out the snow in front and behind the car enough to roll out over the obstructing lump(s).

BUT front wheel drive has a strange quirk – if you turn the wheels onto a sharp lock, under power the car will try to move in the opposite direction to the turn! So keep the wheels straightish until you’ve managed to extricate yourself. The other emergency measure is, if you have a set of rubber mats or over-carpets, shove those under the driving wheels; that can work very well, but try at all costs to avoid wheelspin. There is a very sound reason for this and that is:- wheel-spin generates heat, which will melt a thin layer of snow

immediately under the tyre and turn it to ice, which is not good, because it will reduce traction by up to 90%!.

There is far more grip in loose snow; ice needs chains – and we’ve already discussed that. I can explain many more tricks in fine detail if you want to call me at the garage, but this is just a little taster for the time being. Happy new year everyone – and try not to get stuck or bend your car.

VOLUNTEERS WORK WITH EMERGENCY SERVICES Tewkesbury-based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service members have been kept busy recently working with the local emergency services.

They were asked by Gloucester Fire and Rescue Service with whom they work with on occasions to take part in Exercise Interceptor which took place over two weekends recently.

Four unit members Nic Price, Sue Yates, Jane Thomas and Peter Collins attended Severn Park Fire Training Centre at Avonmouth.

Head of Unit Nic Price said "We they were taken onto the training ground to find a seven vehicle pile up consisting of a lorry, five cars and a motorbike which were involved in a simulated crash at a roundabout.

“Members played a crucial role acting as casualties and with the aid of a superb make-up artist our crash injuries were made to look horrific and very lifelike.

“The idea was to test crews from all around the area including Tewkesbury, Gloucester and the Forest of Dean to see how they can work with the equipment they now carry to safely cut victims free from vehicles in road traffic accidents, as well as testing command and control procedures.

“The exercise also brought together paramedics from the ambulance service, the high-

Following this exercise the Unit was pleased to welcome Inspector Mike Wilkinson of the Gloucester Constabulary to a Monday night meeting, when he explained the finer points of searching for missing persons (see picture above).

This was a follow up to the Unit's involvement in Operation Watermark which was held at Olney Island, Gloucester earlier in the year.

with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society Perhaps, on first thought, there is too much ‘Now’ and not enough ‘Then’ in Newtown! However even the modern houses of Wellfield are approaching their Golden Anniversary.

The houses now cover the former Spa Farm where Tewkesbury tried but failed to rival the spa water of Cheltenham. Whose garden contains the former well? Cotteswold Dairies also started its illustrious life at Spa Farm when harry Workman took over from his brother in law. Initially his diary was located in Cotteswold Road but he had the foresight in the 1950s to buy land in Newtown to create an industrial estate away from the residential areas.

Inevitably the residential area followed him and indeed it also submerged the grounds of Walton House. From 1911-37 that mansion was the home to the maternal grandfather of Barbara Cartland but after the last war it was converted into a children’s home. I wonder if any readers can recognise the nurse in the foreground who is now enjoying a year in the spot-light. There were also ‘Marconi Cottages’ and ‘Tintown’ – I have never seen any photographs of these homes.

Two brothers from the newly formed White Tiger Tae-Kwon-Do and Martial Arts club in Tewkesbury entered their very first tournament after training for only five months.

Championships held in Bradley and Jake Boden Hereford recently. (both yellow tags, which is the next grade from white belt) entered the National Independent Tae-Kwon-Do Association (NITA) British

Jake was unlucky not to come away with a trophy and Bradley (pictured) went on to miss gold by just a few points.

The boys instructor, Paul Wanklyn, a fourth degree black belt said: “Both Bradley and Jake wanted to enter this competition which is the biggest of the year and they were up against some experienced fighters and higher grades.

“For Bradley to come away with silver in his very first competition is a testament to his courage and ability. I am very proud of both Bradley and Jake they both have the potential to go far.”

PLAYGROUP’S CONCERT NIGHT SUCCESS Mitton Manor Pre-school and After School Club held their annual Christmas Concert at the Watson Hall.

Nearly fifty children aged between two and a half and four performed on stage with a full house of family, friends and VIP guests Councillor Chuck Pavey, Tewkesbury Town Mayor, and Mayoress Mrs Anne Baylis.

All the children were fantastic on a highly successful night made possible through a lot of work from the staff and committee.

The organisers would like to thank all the companies in Tewkesbury that supported the evening, especially Travis Perkins who sponsored the event.

Local double glazing specialists L&L Installations is working on a project to upgrade windows at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Tewkesbury.

Sales manager Jeremy Phillips said “The brief was to carefully remove the old windows, extracting the traditional stained glass and lead designs from the frames and encapsulate them in modern energy-efficient sealed units, before glazing these into our new energyLOCK windows at the church. Reader Dave Newman sent us this photograph of Bredon Station in the 1960s.

“I was a signal man at Bredon in the early sixties, when the Stationmaster was Mr Andrews,” recalled Dave.

“He lived in the station house and as I remember he had a lovely daughter. “ The porter was a well-known character named Frank Farbrother who lived just over the bridge opposite the old Railway Inn. “There were two coal merchants in the yard - Mr Mustoe and Mr Turner - who played jokes on one another. Mr Mustoe got up to all sorts of things and a good laugh was guaranteed most days.”

NEW TEWKESBURY SLIPWAY APPROVED

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service has been granted approval to build an emergency slipway in Tewkesbury, to improve response times and ultimately, help save lives.

Following a number of rescue and recovery operations on this stretch of water, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service first put in permission for development of the slipway in 2004 through the land owners, Avon Navigational Trust.

The site was identified as the best location for this emergency slipway,

providing a safe launch and retrieval for a water rescue boat onto the River Severn.

As the site is a village green, the Fire and Rescue Service and the land owners had to ask the Secretary of State for permission to take the development forward.

As a garden designer I am constantly learning, often from my clients, many of whom simply need a little advice on solving a gardening problem. Many "google" to find an answer, others reach for a good reference book, but many enjoy chatting it over.

We have been thinking how we might help our readers enjoy visiting gardens all the more aided by a good grasp of garden design principles and indeed might like to experiment in their own gardens.

There are six basic principles: Unity, Variety, Balance, Rhythm, Scale, Proportion. We are planning a morning workshop to explore these on Wednesday 29th Feb at the Tewkesbury Abbey Visitors Centre and would be pleased to welcome you.

As the days lengthen, and we all hope to get out among the snowdrops, there is almost an irresistible urge to start sow-

ing seeds outside and planting out but be patient! Unless your soil is very well drained and you live in a sheltered spot it is better to wait until spring.

Most vegetable seeds won't germinate until the soil temperature reaches 7C (45F) and will just rot

if sown cold.

The window sill is a good place to sow indoors and I recently purchased a very simple propagator to start some lettuce seeds which need some warmth (10 to 15C).

I hope to transplant these into my unheated greenhouse with some bubble wrap for protection for an early crop.

Another enjoyable task is to ‘chit’ some first early potatoes and grow them in pots in a cool porch or conservatory.

We enjoy ‘rocket’ which takes about 100 days to crop. Happy Growing and Learning!

Cathy Harrison, of Tewkesbury's Gallery Boutique, drew our attention to a local dance group and their plans to perform in the Mardi Gras spectacular at Disneyland, Paris.

Dance-Tec's founder, Rachel Cole, said: "We are taking thirty dancers from our Tewkesbury and Cheltenham dance schools to Disneyland Paris in August 2012.

“After four months of auditions with Mardi Gras, we have been given the chance to do a twenty minute performance in an open theatre there.

“At the moment we are in rehearsal for competitions and the event, but we are still in need of funds to help us send dancers to Paris.

“We also need to hire coaches to get us to London and back, as well as money to pay for costumes. We are always doing fundraising events and are now seeking local sponsors to help us on our way.

“As a teacher I am extremely proud of all of my dancers and I am very excited for them to perform at such an amazing place.”

BOXING RETURNS TO WATSON HALL Tewkesbury Amateur Boxing Club is presenting a fight night at the town’s Watson Hall next month.

The club, which is now in its third year, has had a successful season so far with Tewkesbury lad Adam Harper becoming Western Counties Champion in his weight division.

Both male and female pugilists train at the club, which is located next to the Car Auction site in Northway Lane. Some members do not compete, but use the sport as a way to keep fit.

The special boxing night at the Watson Hall will be on Saturday 3rd March. Doors open at 7pm with bouts beginning at 8pm. Tickets are available on the door. For more details call 01684 274478.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOUR TO RAIL CLUB MEETINGS

Tewkesbury School student Prussia Moore has asked us to thank eveyone who supported her fund-raising ‘Auction of Promises’ before Christmas.

Prussia has been accepted at the famous Italia Conti Arts Academy in London, and is trying to raise money to pay for her tuition fees. “I have received so much support from local businesses,” said Prussia. “In particular I’d like to say thnak you to Cottewsold Dairy, Jason Jones, The Roses Theatre and Paul Baker of Tewkesbury Sports Centre for their assistance.”

At just over 100 years old, the Iralia Conti is London’s oldest theatre arts schools. Former students include Leslie Phillips and Martine McCutcheon.

The Tewkesbury YMCA Railway Society’s programme has an international flavour this month.

On Tuesday 7th February, Bob Sweet will give a presentation on The Railways of Japan. Dave Fleming visits on Tuesday 21st February to talk about ‘steam on three continents - and an island.’

There will be members evenings with DVDs and CDs on both February 14th and 28th. Meetings start at 7.45pm prompt at the YMCA in Church Street, Tewkesbury.

POPPING BACK TO THE EIGHTIES Andy Randle and Paul Dodson make up the new 80’s electro pop group Binomial, writes Shelby Powell.

The boys got together through their love of 80’s music. Andy (synths and programming) has been playing for about twenty years having been in several tribute bands from the Pet Shop Boys to Depeche Mode.

Paul (vocals) has been singing about the same length of time, and has previously released his own album.

The band which was formed less than six months ago has already put a full set together ready for the gigging scene. Programming is done using the ‘old fashioned’ sequencers, drum machines, and synths. Andy hails from Tewkesbury while Paul is from South Cerney deep in the southern Cotswolds The group plays everything from Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Bronski Beat, Soft Cell, and Yazoo. RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

ROLLING AROUND THE HAM For many readers, this will be a walk in their own back yard. Like most parts of old Tewkesbury, the Ham is atmospheric whatever the weather and is an excellent spot for an evening or morning stroll. theories say that this tranquil channel may have been cut as long as 1,000 years ago.

The Severn Ham is now an island, protected by trustees and undeveloped due to flooding. It is a sight of special scientific interest with rare plants and a variety of birds

The walk starts from Back of Avon, where there is limited free parking for a time restricted period.

Walk towards the former flour mills and cross the footbridge on to the Ham (1). The bridge crosses the Mill Avon, where a variety of pleasure craft now moor: some

Carry on walking along the river bank until you reach a weir (pictured above). The course of the Severn was altered here in the mid-nineteenth century, and a lock constructed to allow cargo vessels a passage north to the Midlands.

With the weir to your right, take the path immediately left across the centre of the Ham (2) and head back towards the riverside buildings.

Go through the kissing gate (3) and over the footbridge to reach the Abbey Mill, which was featured in Mrs Craik’s novel John Halifax, Gentleman.

Walk up Mill Street and go through the gateway on the right (4) into the Victoria Pleasure Gardens. This riverside park was laid out in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. It may

POPULAR LOCAL BUTCHER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT After 85 years of trading as a family butcher in Kemerton, Martin and Creana Walker have announced they are to retire at the end of March. For sixty years the popular shop has traded as John Walker, and has been run by John’s son Martin and his wife Creana for thirty years. As well as the butchers and grocery store on the Bredon Road, John Walker’s mobile butcher’s shop was a familiar sight around the Tewkesbury area and the Bredon Hill villages for several decades.

1927 saw Arthur Walker moving to ‘The Bredons’ at Kemerton. He died when his son John was only 16, and the business was run by his wife until John took over around 1950.

Martin said: “We will be very sad to close, but the time has come to hang up the tools of our trade.

“Creana and I would like to say a big thank you to all the customers who have supported us over the many years we have been trading in

Kemerton and delivering around Bredon Hill to lots of people, so many of whom we now regard as firm friends.”

It's the time of year when many struggle to lose weight. Let me help you by sharing some of the information that I share with my patients, many of whom have really done well in losing the weight they didn't want or need, and keeping it off, writes David Slater.

To start with STOP diets.

Yes, do think more about what you eat BUT this does not mean going through faddy diets.

The desire to lose weight must come from the individual. If you're truly undecided about making changes in your lifestyle or are doing this to please someone else, you're likely to fail.

When making changes, decide what's right for you and your lifestyle.

Your best friend's diet and exercise plan may be completely wrong for your habits and interests.

Design your own eating plan rather than copy someone else’s as it may very well NOT work for you. The key is to find a system that works for you.

Don't blame yourself if you aren't perfect. If you once fail at your attempt to cut down on your overeating, it doesn't mean you are a failure at weight control.

Accept that you perhaps you could have taken better decisions and made better choices, but don't let that poor choice influence the rest of your plan.

The same holds true

with that bone of contention for many, exercise. Skipping a few workouts doesn't mean you can't get back on track. Weight control does not involve making perfect choices all the time; it's about attempting to make good choices more often than poor ones. It’s about trying not just giving up.

Avoid surroundings where you know you're tempted to make poor food choices. Try to plan other activities or distractions for those times, or plan in advance how you're going to handle them and stick to it.

Surround yourself with people who support your efforts. Even our good friends can knowingly or unknowingly sabotage weight-loss attempts.

Decide on some nonfood rewards for yourself when you reach the various stages in achieving your goals.

Stock your pantry and refrigerator with healthy foods. Set small goals and focus on these rather than the "big picture." Decide where you want to be in a week or in a month, rather than focusing on the total amount of

weight you'd like to lose.

REMEMBER - a journey round the world has to start with just one small step. Be content to take one step at a time and see your weight loss as a gradual process that you happily work towards every day.

Shop when you are NOT hungry Work out what you want before you go to the shop and stick to the list BUY NOTHING MORE !

Think whether you are really hungry or are thirsty instead. Many people mistake a feeling of hunger for actually being thirsty, so have a drop of water first to make sure. Carry a small bottle of water with you in your bag, brief case, car.

Think NEED over WANT. You stand a better chance of losing weight if you manage to eat what your body needs rather than what your emotions usually consider it wants.

To lose weight your intake needs to be less than what your body needs. At the same time, be sure to eat enough.

Nearly all of them also stock new items that are popular, such as batteries and custom accessories, so it’s worth a phone call if doom and gloom descends on your car.

Now all of this is fine if you’re able to fit the parts yourselves, but what if you can’t, or don’t want to? Well, you call people like us at Natton Garage where we will happily fit them for you……

BUT – and there is a ‘but’ – Because these items are ‘used’, garages that are willing to fit these parts will not guarantee them in any way.

Generally, all the suppliers will give you a 3 month replacement or money back warranty, but they won’t cover the labour costs; that’s the risk you take.

Similarly, we as a garage will not buy used parts on behalf of you the customer; we will point you in the direction, but you have to pay for the part or parts separately – and the reason is simple: we make no profit on these parts; you can buy them for the same price as us, so if we buy and fit used parts and they fail, the warranty rests with us (including labour); the result of which, is we end up out of pocket. This is why the transaction has to be between you and the supplier.

However, that said, used parts in general are a great success story and many an otherwise expensive repair has been side-stepped at a fraction of the ‘new price cost’ by taking a trip to one of these outlets. And as our motto has always been to ‘do the best deal we can for our customers’, that is why I’m giving these guys the ‘thumbs-up’.

SAINSBURY’S EYE UP SITE Tewkesbury's Chamber of Commerce say they have been been contacted by Sainsburys, who are planning to move on to the brownfield site formerly occupied by Dowty Seals and Trellborg, at Easter Business Park, off the A46 at Ashchurch (land opposite the BP Garage).

We understand the company will be submitting a planning application to Tewkesbury Borough Council during late Spring for the superstore, which will also include provision for a petrol station.

A representative from the multi-national says there will be a public consultation before the planning application is lodged and up to 300 full and part time jobs will be created.

The Town has recently been concerned with the announcement, apparently with no consultation, of the closure of the present police station, which is in the heart of the Town in Barton Street. I wonder how many people would shed a tear if the building was demolished. It was built after 1960 at an unhappy time in architectural history. To be sure the buildings, which it replaced, were run down by then but, in Tewkesbury, one can never trust a façade. Just look at the building to the right of the present station. Beneath a more modern roof is the unmistakable frame of a medieval building. One wonders if the shops and houses once owned by Cllr. Mellor also concealed medieval structures?

The police station replaced is now, with some irony, partly a dentist’s surgery in Bredon Road – and it also makes a very elegant home with an impressively safe cellar! One wonders what will happen to the latest station when the police move out. It will certainly be an opportunity to right an architectural wrong.
