Advocating for the General Dentist

TAGDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Proposed Legislative Agenda Insurance Capping of Fees

The top issue is passing affirmative legislation which prevents insurance companies from capping fees to be charged for non-covered services. This issue is also a national priority for AGD. To date, more than 20 states have already passed similar bills. The Texas Dental Association has been working to develop legislation that will be introduced on this topic and TAGD expects to be strongly supportive of those efforts. This includes services that their contracts do not cover with those carriers.

The Illegal Practice of Dentistry

A second priority will be supporting efforts that crack down on the illegal practice of dentistry. There have been growing concerns about unlicensed care being performed in parts of the state and recently, efforts have been made in order to stop unlicensed individuals in San Antonio, Houston and the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. TAGD is interested in finding ways of increasing these efforts to stop illegal practice.

Mid-Level Providers

Another top priority has been opposing any efforts to increase the scope of practice performed by midlevel providers. As efforts to promote an expansion of duties by mid-level providers continues to be pushed by national groups, TAGD remains committed to ensuring that dentists remain head of the oral health care team. How Close Are You? MasterTrack is a protocol-type program set up in two-session segments. Each session is three and a half days beginning with protocol presentations on Thursday. If you are a new participant to MasterTrack you will not make a presentation on Thursday. However,

if you choose to attend to watch the other participants’ presentations, you may earn lecture credit for that day. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday begin new topics. Participants that complete the four-year track will earn the minimum participation hours needed for Fellowship or Mastership.

MasterTrack attendees are expected to earn the additional lecture hours at local CE meetings during this period. Hands-on hours earned during the first 500 hours for Fellowship can now be applied to the hours required for Mastership.

More than 6 million days of bed disability, 12.7 million days of restricted activity, and 20.5 million days of lost work each year are the result of illnesses related to oral health. Yet, most oral health problems are preventable with a prevention model that includes: oral health literacy, sound hygiene, and preventive care available through the dental team concept. To voice the concerns of general dentists against independent mid-level providers and to provide real workable solutions to solve the access to oral health care challenge, the AGD has developed and adopted an official policy on access to care. Read the access to dental care AGD white paper titled, Increasing Access to and Utilization of Oral Health Care Services. AGD will use this policy to take further action with state boards, legislators, dental organizations, the public, and other communities of interest in the upcoming months to address access to dental care.

CapWiz Action Alerts

Capwiz Action Alerts are the AGD’s communications tool that makes reaching legislators on bills and regulations of interest to the dental profession easy. Getting involved through Action Alerts is effortless! JOURNAL OF THE TEXAS ACADEMY OF GENERAL DENTISTRY • WINTER 2011

General Dentists’ Eyes, Ears & Voices

AGD continuously monitors local legislation so that the organization can communicate the interest of the general dentist to interested parties. In addition, the organization maintains reports and statistics to use as resources when speaking to local legislators on the general dentists’ behalf. Each week the AGD publishes a series of state legislative updates called, General Dentists’ Eyes, Ears and Voices. Visit the AGD web site to learn more about local legislation that the AGD is monitoring or view earlier legislative updates from the AGD

AGDtranscript The AGDtranscript is a quarterly e-newsletter sent to each state dental board in an effort to facilitate greater awareness of dental trends and issues across the nation. As the Academy of General Dentistry worked with Licensing dental boards toward acceptance of the AGD state transcript, it was noticed that happenings in one state were not always publicized to other states. Through this newsletter, the AGD hopes to build a lasting relationship with state licensing agencies while communicating information of interest.

Dr. Jeff Brucia

Restorative Materials Update & Direct Aesthetic Anterior Restorations: A Partnership of Art and Science Dr. Brucia is a graduate of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry where he is currently an assistant professor of Dental Practice. He practices aesthetic and restorative dentistry full time in San Francisco, California. Dr. Brucia is the co-director of the FACE institute where he chairs the department of Aesthetics and Adhesive Material Science. His focus is to build a partnership between gnathology, occlusion and adhesion. He is also on the faculty of several university-based postgraduate programs in aesthetic dentistry. Dr. Brucia is the 2011 recipient of the Gordon J. Christensen Recognition Lecturer Award. In 2010, Dr. Brucia was elected a fellow in the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and he has also been selected by Dentistry Today as one of the top clinicians in dental CE. Dr. Brucia is past chair of the CDA Board of Managers, Scientific Sessions. He has received Fellowships in the American and International College of Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry International, the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the Doctoral Degree with Delta Sigma Delta. He has worked as a developer and evaluator for new materials with several manufactures and laboratories.

The Voice of the General Dentist The TAGD Advocacy Fund The TAGD, the only organization that solely represents the interests of general dentists, established the TAGD Advocacy Fund to support the Academy’s government affairs efforts. AGD Fellowship Exam Review Online! The goal of the TAGD’s Dental Assistant Course is to provide sufficient information to help dental assistants gain knowledge and understanding of the critical concepts associated with each of these areas in order to facilitate success in each examination.

All dental office employees can now receive OSHA and HIPAA training online from the comfort of their own computer. The course is approximately one hour and forty-five minutes in duration, once completed, this course awards 3.5 hours of CE. This course will cover: • Hazard communication and exposure control plans. • An overview of the HIPAA rules, including the penalty rules (fines). • HIPAA issues that might occur in a dental office. Blood-borne Pathogens Annual Training & HIPAA Reminders

TAGD also now offers an online OSHA and HIPAA annual update course. TEEN’S ORAL HEALTH Should I limit drinking soda?

YES! Whether at school, home or on the weekends, teens are drinking more soda than they have in the past. In 1977, 12 to 19-year-olds drank 16 ounces of soda a day. In 1996, this same age group consumed an average of 28 ounces a day. Not only is sugar harmful to teeth, acidic flavor additives can also erode and damage tooth enamel. There are simple ways you can limit the harmful effects of sodas. Try sipping soda through a straw. It cuts down on the contact the beverage has with your teeth. Rinse your mouth with water after drinking soda. It can also reduce the risk of cavities.

Why should I make time for healthy habits? Quick meals in the form of “nutrition” bars and fast food help keep you alert and on schedule between school, extracurricular activities and part-time jobs. However, today’s fast-paced lifestyle threatens to leave the teen generation with permanent damage to oral and overall health. You can keep travel-size brushes in lockers or back packs. Chewing sugarless gum with xylitol after meals or snacks can also help cleanse your mouth. Drinking water throughout the day can help clean your teeth of excess bacteria and food debris.

Why should I avoid oral piercings? Tongue piercing remains a teen trend, however it is not always a healthy choice for your mouth. People chip teeth on tongue piercings while eating, sleeping, talking and chewing on the jewelry. Tongue piercing commonly causes fractured teeth. The fracture can be confined to tooth enamel and require a filling, or it may go deeper; in which case, can cause a need for a root canal or extraction. Infections are also common with oral piercings, and they cause more than pain. A tongue can swell after being punctured, however in some cases the tongue becomes infected and swells so much that it may cut off breathing. Unclean piercing equipment can cause other infections, such as bloodborne hepatitis.

Teens should be sure to see their dentist at least twice a year. Regular dental visits can help catch minor problems before they become major ones!

The effort to seek single-state region status for Texas begun in 1985 when Dr. Gene Allen was president and came to fruition under the leadership of Dr. Bob Wynne of Houston who became president after Dr. Allen.
