FALL 2014
As the newly appointed President of the Texas Academy of General Dentistry, I bring you greetings for this, my first official address to all the members of this great organization! I stood shoulder to shoulder with my fellow Board of Directors and Executive Officers, facing an enthusiastic crowd during the 2014 Dentist of the Year Gala, on September 13th. The National President of the Academy of General Dentistry, Dr. Carter Brown, administered the oath of office, and each of us, raising our right hand, did solemnly swear to serve you and this profession to the best of our abilities and talents. I know each of us was duly reminded of the responsibility of exercising diligence, wisdom in our leadership, purity of our integrity, sense of fairness and well-tempered foresight to continue to lead this wonderful organization forward. We said in unison, “we do”! And we will! So, who is this man that stood to take the reigns as the Texas AGD moves forward? Here is a bit about me. As a 1976 graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, I also joined the AGD that year! A military career in the USAF Dental Corps brought me and my family to San Antonio three times during tours at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, with the operations of the two-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency. It was an AGD member from Vernon, Texas, Col. (Dr.) Tom Stamps, my commander from an earlier assignment, who became my significant mentor. I remember to this day, that he sketched on a napkin while we sat in an airport, some thirty years ago, a road map
of my future with AGD and it has guided me to become who I am today. Now, I serve as an Associate Professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry at the UTHSCSA School of Dentistry. As a Group Practice Leader for 27 students, I surround myself with these young learners each and every day. But guess what? They now surround me with their commitment to lifelong learning, as we have 80 plus DS3 and DS4 students attend our monthly AGD Student FellowTrack sessions! Like our prestigious Baylor and Houston programs, we have effectively captured the enthusiasm for and recognition that this organization breeds and deserves. When students walk up to me and ask how they can earn Fellowship in the AGD before they even are a DDS, that is a major statement! They see meaning and value in this organization, and that vital realization will be our center of gravity for years to come! As with many others, we have challenges facing us as a professional organization. The list starts with growing and sustaining our membership, finding a multi-talented replacement for our beloved Executive Director, Mrs. Connie Sonnier, balancing the budget, ensuring our CE programs are top draw and top shelf, and monitoring the pulse of the many legislative issues affecting dentistry through our advocacy efforts with Mr. David Mintz at the helm. Also, streamlining our committees, councils, and task forces to work and think as one, staying connected with the TSBDE rules and regulations, keeping the goals and vision of the Jack T.

The list goes on… But wait, we also have strengths! At the Annual AGD Meeting in Detroit, Texas AGD won the Constituent of the Year Award (Category 1) for the sixth year in a row, along with winning awards in advocacy, communications, continuing education and public information! We had 15 members receive their Fellowship Award, 6 members receive their Mastership Award, and 4 members received their Lifelong Learning and Service Recognition Award! Our Student FellowTrack programs at the three Texas dental schools enjoy a very robust membership! The New Dentist Study Club, MasterTrack, and Master Study Club continue to offer the best in continuing education opportunities at all levels! The success of the component sponsored CE courses across the state, along with the New Dentist Conference and Lone Star Dental Conference, underscores that TAGD brings the best to the best! We recognized our New Dentist of the Year as Dr. Melissa Lent, and our Dentist of the Year as Dr. T. Bob Davis. Gracious kudos to our Immediate Past President, Dr. Donna Miller and her Board of Directors and TAGD staff who, under her leadership, have again raised the bar of TAGD excellence a notch even higher!

Please call me at 210-292-1188 to chat and place your order. The only tax is your valuable time! As the 2014 Dentist of the Year Master of Ceremonies, I had a unique privilege to develop a theme that will carry through my presidency. I have chosen the theme; Learn, Earn, Return. To me, these three words summarize the cycle of what I see we do as Academy members. We learn through our enduring commitment to lifelong learning, we earn recognition through attainment of our Fellowship and Mastership awards and beyond, and return the fruits of those accomplishments to this organization by our leadership, volunteerism, mentorship, and patient care. For me, there is no greater honor and privilege than to represent you and all that this organization learns, earns, and returns each and every day. One of the questions we ask ourselves as professionals and business owners is “How can we do this better?” In the last issue of the TexasGP, we had a short survey to get TAGD membership thoughts on the print version of this magazine and if there was any interest in an online version only. On a 5 point scale (1 - not interested, 5 – very interested), membership rated the print version a 3.7 ant the interest in an online version was only a 3.3. I want to thank everyone for taking the time to participate in the survey. We are working hard to make the magazine more interesting and informative than ever. The last few years have really seen increase in the number of ground breaking programs, high quality events and increasing advocacy. This takes a lot of work behind the scenes. There are a number of people that inspire me that I would like to recognize: Kudos to Lone Star Dental Conference chairman Marc Warob and the TAGD staff for hosting such an outstanding meeting. We had record attendance
and there were many highlights that we have featured in this issue. Our Dentist Of the Year, T. Bob Davis. I’ve known you for many years now and could not be more impressed with your lifelong dedication to dentistry, advocacy and education. The award is well deserved. I love the cover photo of you with Janice! Outgoing President Donna Miller. TAGD President is a tough gig. Yet, I never heard you complain once about the workload. You always have a smile on your face and handle things capably and with grace. Interim executive director David Mintz for keeping our organization focused and on course. Connie Sonnier, our incredible executive director. You impacted many lives for the better and really made a difference. I saw first hand, countless times, your passion for TAGD, dentistry and staff. You are a true professional and a remarkable person.

update by David Mintz
The last several months have been extremely active at the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. Among other issues, TAGD was active in the development of a new rule regarding sleep medicine and also joined others in successfully calling for the Board to delay action on controversial rule changing requirements for when discontinuing a practice. In late November, the Board may take action on proposed rules governing agreements between dentists and Dental Service Organizations. As this issue of the GP went to press, there were two openings on the Board. It is anticipated that Governor Perry will make appointments to the Board before it meets again. Meanwhile, it may seem like the last session just ended but the 2015 Texas legislative session gets underway on January 13. In fact, bill filing for the session, which takes place every two years for 140 days, began shortly after the November elections. During the interim between sessions, legislative committees have been studying issues of interest to dentists. In particular, the Senate Health and Human Services Committee reviewed implementation of the legislation to overhaul the enforcement process at the TSBDE, including the use of expert panels to review complaints and the House
Select Committee on Health Education studied how the state is providing education for health professionals, including for dental care. Both committees will be issuing recommendations to the Legislature before the end of the year. In addition, the Sunset Commission has been examining the Health and Human Services Commission and its Office of Inspector General and those recommendations may affect Medicaid services and how complaints are investigated. The Texas Dental Association’s Day at the Capitol, a highlight of every session, will be held on Wednesday, February 25th. Texas AGD members are encouraged to participate in this important program when dental professionals from across the state gather in Austin to visit with legislators about issues affecting organized dentistry. Throughout the 140 day session, Texas AGD will be actively monitoring legislation field affecting general dentistry. The advocacy council, chaired by Dr. Jennifer Bone, along with the Board and Texas AGD’s legislative lobbyist, will be analyzing bills and taking positions as appropriate to make sure the interests of Texas AGD members are well-represented at the Capitol. The regular legislative session ends on June 1.

FALL 2014
The Celebration of an Era
In July of this past summer, we regretfully informed the membership of the resignation of our longtime executive director Connie Sonnier in light of her cancer diagnosis. Connie has a great passion for TAGD. She leaves an indelible mark on TAGD and in our hearts. No matter what the future holds, she will always be part of the TAGD family.
C
onnie started in the dental profession in 1983 working for Dr. Gus Gates in Temple. Gus served as President of Texas Academy of General Dentistry in 1996 and it was while helping Gus, Connie “caught” the inspiration of TAGD. In 1999, she came to the Texas Academy of General Dentistry as an assistant to the executive director. She was a great understudy and was promoted to Executive Director of the TAGD in 2003. Then it was tighten your seat belts and “blast off” to many new horizons! Connie’s passion for learning, excellence and teaching propelled her to help lead and guide the TAGD in developing many new programs aimed at helping General Dentists learn and excel. She was instrumental in the establishment of the MasterTrack program here in Texas beginning in 2005. Since then, 214 -dentists in Texas have received the Fellowship Award and 103 dentists their Mastership Award. This is phenomenal and Texas outshines all other states in this regard. From this, the Master Study Club was born. Wanting to instill the values of life-long learning to all dentists, Connie realized we must cultivate this process for students in dental school. She worked diligently to help develop and support the FellowTrack programs which are now established in all three Texas dental schools.
So what was next? Of course, New Dentists Study Clubs to keep new dentists engaged. For this group, the New Dentist Conference was initiated in 2011. And, this is the 6th year to honor a New Dentist of the Year recipient! Connie grew the TAGD staff from 2 when she started to now 8 including the part time folks, in order to help support all the programs and activities she envisioned, supported or further developed. Former employee, Laura Ceglio, stated that having Connie as your first boss out of college was wonderful and yet terrifying! She said there is no other with Connie’s drive, vision, tenacity, work ethic and passion for TAGD. Connie always challenged her team to be and do great things and is a great mentor. Her organizational skills are legendary and helped her achieve many, many successes. Give her a little time and she always develops a “plan.” Texas AGD has a reputation of being the “best” at most everything we do. After all, TAGD has won the Constituent of the Year Award for 10 of the last 11 years. Connie is known all around the nation by other executive directors and leaders as the one to whom you can ask, How do you –fill in the blank… for any topic relating to helping the organization for General Dentists. Advocacy has become more and more important to our members. Under Connie’s tutelage, TAGD developed a legislative fund, hired a legislative consultant, added the Gatekeeper
newsletter and instigated many town hall meetings to help keep members informed and engaged for our futures. She has seen TAGD “grow up” in so many aspects. Owning our own office space, multiplying many times over the number of CE courses offered, increasing sponsorship dollars, increased “respect” among other dental related organizations… and the list goes on. One of the highlights of Connie’s career was when she was inducted into the International College of Dentists in New Orleans in 2013. This is an honor for anyone inducted but especially for a non-dentist. A very well deserved honor for Connie! Connie has made an indelible mark on so many members and others that she has touched in person, and beyond. Her passion for TAGD will never be lost or forgotten. You, Andy, Brenda, Elena and Amanda and the others in your family are all in our thoughts and prayers. We look forward to the next chapter that God has planned for you with TAGD. We are not saying goodbye but “see you later!” You are most loved by all of us! – DONNA MILLER, DDS, MAGD

Alan Coleman, DDS TAGD Member Spotlight by Leah Thompson
“I
n late August 2009, I was out running and I heard a voice tell me that I was to start a ministry and go around the world to help people.” For two days, the thought wouldn’t leave his mind and 1 Peter 4:10-11 kept running through his mind, “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms… If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.” Finally, over Labor Day at Sam Rayburn Lake, he looked to his wife Julie of 31 years and said “I have to form this ministry.” They enlisted the assistance of a lawyer and CPA, and filed for a 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation. “We were approved in less than 3 months.”

friends, asking them to support the ministry. They received almost $20,000 dollars and were able to purchase the basic equipment and instruments necessary to travel. They also received a grant from the AGD for our US trips. Embarking on their first mission trip in October 2010, they decided to go to Juampas, Haiti, just nine months after the earthquake, to work at a clinic supported by a Methodist Church from Indiana. International travel with a large group can be challenging but when you add in equipment and supplies, it becomes a whole other feat. Dr. Coleman decided the best way to organize was to talk to others who had participated in missions trips so he could fully prepare. “One thing I learned was that you never take any piece of dental equipment to another country that you need to work with when you return to your office. Many times, equipment is confiscated by foreign customs agents.” They learned to always take three of every surgical

instrument and three restorative setups to allow them to keep moving without loss of time. Despite their best efforts to circumvent any issues ahead of time, some things were out of their control and weather delays caused them to get started later than anticipated. They arrived at a small village with no electricity or running water and shared a house with 40 other people. Dr. Coleman remembers that first trip fondly and laughs as he says, “it was quite an adventure!” In June 2011, they decided to take on a new challenge for their second trip – helping right here in the United States. They found a Methodist facility in Rosebud, South Dakota that provides clothes and food to Native Americans along with dental services by the Indian Health Service. After getting cleared for a temporary dental license in order to provide care, Dr. Coleman was able to restore patient’s front teeth rather than extracting them, which had been the only available service to them previously. In 2012, they decided to return to Haiti. They connected with MOSAIC Ministries and decided to serve at their orphanage in Port Au Prince. They had three days to see and treat over 65 patients. At the end, they were able to provide over $50,000 worth of dentistry. The following year, they received an invitation from KWO Ministries to join their mission trip to Kenya in May 2013 to serve orphans and widows. After 46 hours of travel, they

reached their destination. Dr. Coleman said, “This trip was different, as our team traveled to different sites each day, instead of setting up a centralized clinic. We would travel from 1.5 to 2 hours each morning, set up our clinic, treat patients, pack up our gear, drive back to Kericho, and purchase medications for the orphans before returning to our hotel for dinner. Our days were long.” In just five days, their 13-person team was able to screen over 370 orphans and widows and provide necessary treatment. At the beginning of this past year, they were able to travel to Utila, Honduras with their hometown church, Wesley UMC, and worked in the island’s health clinic for three days. Since starting the ministry, Dr. Coleman and his wife have made it a personal goal to travel at least once a year to help serve either internationally or within the United States. Dr. Coleman’s passion for serving doesn’t stop at annual missions trips. He has been a resident of Beaumont, Texas the past 56 years and since 2007, he has served on the city council and was most recently elected Mayor Pro Tem for the second time. After becoming inspired by the Let’s Move! Initiative, he outlined a proposal to help fight childhood obesity and directed the completion of the goals and as a result Beaumont was the first city in the U.S. to achieve all five gold medals in the National League of Cities Let’s Move! Program. Dr. Coleman has been recognized for his work and has been asked to serve as a panel and webinar speaker for national audiences. Dr. Coleman says he feels incredibly blessed to have been afforded so many opportunities to use his gifts to serve others and he continues to be humbled by the all the doors God continues to open at exactly the right moments.

hen I was in dental school, I was fortunate to have wonderful mentors who encouraged me to be involved in organized dentistry, to commit to a lifetime of learning, and to give back to the community whenever and however I could. Since graduating in 2008, I have done my best to live up to these recommendations and have met even more incredible mentors along the way. Being named TAGD’s 2014 New Dentist of the Year is a reflection of the influence these mentors have had on me. I look forward to many more years of practicing dentistry and continuing my involvement in the TAGD.
– Melissa Lent , DDS
Her Vision for the Future of Dentistry: As research in medicine and dentistry advances, it is becoming clear that the future of the profession carries an obligation for dentists to practice complete care dentistry. In order to provide this ideal, comprehensive care to patients, it is of utmost importance for dentists to continue learning in order to provide patients with the most thorough, complete care possible. Lastly, as our profession provides us with so many opportunities to provide great care to our patients, we must also remember to use our knowledge and skills to serve those less fortunate. The future of dentistry will see dentists providing comprehensive treatment while making a commitment to life-long learning and using their knowledge to treat all patients. 12

was deeply honored to be selected to represent everyone as the Texas Dentist of the YearTM 2014! I brought the trophy to the Dallas County Dental Society’s monthly meeting Tuesday evening to show off the fantastic trophy while highlighting that we had brought it back to Dallas for the first time in 18 years! I am so appreciative to the Dallas AGD and Dallas County Dental Society for their long history of helping me grow professionally and allowing me to serve organized dentistry here. It really should be a reflection of the whole group of fine leaders and members who make dentistry the wonderful profession it is in the local setting! After all, the Dentist of the Year is synonymous with the ideals all of us have for being in dentistry. It is a yearly reminder of shared values and treasured friendships! Again, congratulations to the Texas Academy of General Dentistry for being the conduit annually of the most prestigious award in Texas dentistry. All of dentistry is the beneficiary. – T. I really liked this one due primarily to its originality. Little difficult at first to discern just what is going on, but once you do, I found myself mesmerized by the powerful, sinister presence of the crocodile and happy I was not a diver in that water!
This photo truly captures the intensity as well as the awesome beauty of the Tiger. He/ she is clearly focused solidly on something that it sees immediately in front of it. Again, use of selective focus and nice composition we are drawn to those incredible eyes.
