For me, involvement in dental advocacy has been one bite at a time. When I first joined TAGD’s Advocacy Council I wasn’t well versed on the dental legislative scene, but I felt I should know and do more for our profession. As I began to examine the issues, I realized how passive I had been. The more I learned, the more I wanted to help protect dentistry and our ability to care for patients in the best way possible. TAGD has provided an avenue for me to not only know our concerns, but also to be proactive about them. I never would have guessed a few years ago that I would have taken on an elephant like advocacy, but it all started with a single bite. We’re just a few weeks into a new year—what’s your next bite into advocacy? Jennifer Bone, DDS, MAGD Advocacy Council Chair

Learn It Lead It Texas AGD continues to stand at the front lines of general dentistry and as the 2013 legislative session kicks off it has never been more imperative for you to be informed. TAGD has a number of resources available to keep members informed on the most current issues that could threaten your profession. Visit the Advocacy page on the TAGD website to monitor current issues, read the

latest issue of The Gatekeeper, TAGD’s legislative newsletter and explore additional resources.

Take your legislative learning to the next level and attend TAGD’s Legislative Training on February 19 in Austin. Learn about the innerworkings of the state government and gain insight on how to communicate with our legislators. More information TBA.

Ready to take an even more active role in protecting your profession? Attend TDA Legislative Day on February 20 in Austin and meet all the new faces at the Texas State Capitol. Take the lead in helping the success of grassroots initiatives in dentistry. Inform your local legislators of the issues currently facing Texas dentists.

Do you have key legislative contacts? Connect them with TAGD leadership and together we can build a network of advocates for your profession. Get involved on a local level and volunteer to be a legislative liaison for your TAGD component. Look out for local issues in your area that affect your practice and help keep us informed. The more we know, the more we can help!

The road after graduation can often be an uncertain one as dental graduates are faced with more challenges than ever before. It is always the goal of TAGD to help general dentists succeed. Last year, TAGD made great strides to offer more opportunities to new dentists by launching several New Dentist Study Clubs across the state. Clubs have been founded in Austin, Dallas, Houston and San

Antonio to connect new dentists to their peers. Meet your fellow new dentists, gain mentorship from our distinguished Masters and learn high caliber clinical and practice management techniques. New dentists should know they are not alone. TAGD can make the transition from dental school to professional life an easy one. Attend the next New Dentist Study Club meeting in your area.

Lead It

Whether you’re a new dentist or a tenured member of the profession, you can take charge in shaping this fledgling group. As the New Dentist Study Clubs gain momentum, leadership is needed to ensure its success. Volunteer to help plan the format for future meetings or share your specialized skills by presenting your case research to the group.

Your leadership is needed within the New Dentist Study Club.

Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry is one of the most rigorous continuing education awards in dentistry and the MasterTrack program provides TAGD members with the fastest and most affordable means of obtaining it. MasterTrack is a protocol-type program set up in two-session segments for each track year. Each session is three and a half days beginning with protocol presentations. Participants that complete the four-year track will earn the minimum 400 participation hours needed for Mastership. Your participation in the MasterTrack program will serve as an example to other dentists of the importance of quality continuing education to patient care. By achieving the TAGD Mastership award, your patients will be assured that their dentist is dedicated to providing the finest care in general dentistry.

Lead It

The Mastership award symbolizes the professional responsibility of general dentists to remain current in their profession and reminds each member of the dental profession to continue to learn new skills for their practice. By participating in MasterTrack and gaining this designation you are already gaining the recognition of being a leader in your field. Once you have gained your Mastership you can continue your commitment to excellence in dentistry. Share your skills and the knowledge you’ve gained from the track and present your case research at a FellowTrack or New Dentist Study Club meeting around the state. You can also be a leader by helping to set the bar high for your colleagues and recruiting a member to take part in MasterTrack. Together we can raise the standard of care for all dental patients. Every year in the United States more than 30,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer. Of that number about half will not survive more than five years. While this number may be alarming the first step is to be aware and get educated. It is the mission of The Jack T. Clark Foundation to support the oral health of all Texans affected by cancer. In keeping with this mission, they provide a number of educational opportunities for TAGD members and the public. “Oral Cancer & Differential Diagnosis” is a Jack T. Clark sponsored online course that can be taken from the comfort of your own office. The course emphasizes clinical relevance by illustrating and discussing clinical changes, which may represent early malignant or premalignant lesions. This 6 hour CE will truly help you protect your patients on a greater level.

The Foundation's mission is to support the oral health of all Texans affected by cancer - through education, access to appropriate oral health care and collaborative research. Our vision is to strive to ease suffering from oral conditions related to cancer and cancer therapy.

You can also protect your patients by keeping them educated. The Jack T. Clark Foundation provides free oral cancer brochures in English and Spanish for you to distribute to your patients. Visit www.tagd.org/jtcf-brochures to order your free copies now.

The Jack T. Clark Foundation needs your help. As the charitable arm of TAGD, the Foundation is our best hope to prevent and treat oral cancer cases in Texas. You can also provide support to the Foundation by planning a fundraiser in your area. Your generous donations and valuable time keep the foundation alive.
