president’s message

The Texas Academy of General Dentistry is all about Advancing Excellence in General Dentistry! This occurs on an individual level first and then builds to encompass the entire membership and beyond. Why did you join the AGD? For most of us, it was because someone asked us to join or shared their experiences with us and we saw the benefits of membership. As for me, it was Gus Gates, from Temple who first encouraged me to become a member. Thank you, Gus! For many, membership is about strengthening and building relationships. The current membership of TAGD is 2,446. National AGD has recently included Texas in a pilot project to increase our membership. Our organization is only as strong as our members. The greater the membership in TAGD, the stronger voice we have at the Capital as well as at the State Board level. Increasing our membership results in more resources to offer our members. I challenge each of you to invite and encourage at least one colleague to join AGD by summer’s end. Call our outstanding staff at the TAGD office with the name and contact information of this person and they will follow-up by sending a packet of information to them to make it easy to join. All you have to do is ASK! Speaking of our TAGD office staff, we are so blessed to have one of the very best teams around. They provide incredible support to our local components in helping arrange, organize and implement many Continuing

2013 - 2014 Board of Directors

Education events throughout the state. This includes assistance to the FellowTrack programs in the dental schools, New Dentist Study Clubs, MasterTrack programs, Master Study Club, as well as the New Dentist Conference and The Lone Star meeting. In fact, the TAGD team has helped with 50 CE events so far this year to reach over 1,000 dentists and their staff in the state of Texas. Many components use TAGD staff for all the services that a local component Executive Director would normally provide. This has allowed the components to flourish and grow with increased financial stability. New computers were recently purchased to help bring the headquarters office up to date and allow for more efficiency and effective performance by the staff on behalf of our members. We have just installed new membership software and included an interactive website. Once you log into the website, it will take you to a customized My TAGD page that will house your event registration history, upcoming meetings in your area, a link to your AGD transcript and more! We will soon add “List serves” for many of our groups within TAGD. As you read this, the TAGD delegation will have just returned from the AGD annual meeting held in Detroit this year. We have been honored to receive the #1 State Constituent for the last 10 years. We are thinking positive and hoping to make it eleven years in a row! This does not happen without a lot of hard work and effort by our members and our staff. We have an awesome organization. Take advantage of it! Make it your responsibility to go out and share the benefits and rewards of being a member. Do your part to help grow our numbers and our organization! Get more involved and get more out of TAGD. —Donna Miller, DDS, MAGD

Summer is here! If you have any exotic travels, dental missionary work or see any interesting dental practices abroad and would like to share photos and stories with your colleagues, let us know. We would love to feature your story in the TexasGP. I would like to thank my friend, Dr. Richard Hansard, for sharing his experiences as a zoo dentist. Hey Richard… What did the bear eat after the dentist fixed his tooth? The dentist! Yes, pure comedy gold. You can have that one on me.

5 TAGD’s 2014-2015 President

Athletic competition has a way of creating interpersonal bonds that are hard to establish any other way. It’s one thing to sweat over a gross anatomy or neurophysiology exam with your classmates, but another thing entirely to put those efforts into physical and cooperative effort. For those of us that participated in the dental olympics, I’m sure it was one of the highlights of dental school. It’s great that this event continues and many thanks to Ali Golshani for his help on getting this feature article together.

With another successful New Dentist Conference behind us, it’s time to gear up for another great Lone Star Dental Conference. One of the things that really distinguishes these events to me from other meetings is the sense of community, inclusiveness and camaraderie. At the risk of repeating my mantra from previous years, if you have never attended these meetings, they are unique gems from the grab bag of dental conference out there. Come see firsthand why so many attendees return year after year. —aNDREW LAZARIS, DDS, FAGD

2014-2015 PRESIDENT INTRODUCING KEVIN GURECKIS, DMD, MAGD

I have been the recipient of a great opportunity this year, as President-Elect of the Texas AGD, and have become much more aware and appreciative of all this great organization does for us each and every day! I now, more than ever, see firsthand all that goes on behind the scenes! With the strategic leadership and vision of our Texas AGD Board members, tactical guidance of our multi-talented Executive Director, and top to bottom support of our dedicated TAGD staff, we all work seamlessly with our state components. That is what makes an organization ‘tick’, and we ‘tick’ loud and clear! As we prepare for a very active legislative year that will require our well prepared testimonies and personal interaction with our legislative members, we are also supporting a robust continuing dental education program that operates flawlessly at all levels. From the dental student FellowTrack programs to New Dentist Study Clubs to Fellowship and MasterTrack and Master Study Clubs to top-notch component CE events across the state, the culmination comes with our 2014 Lone Star Dental Conference, and the Texas Dentist of the YearTM Gala. I am extending a personal invitation to each of you to join us this September 12-13, at the Westin Austin at the Domain. We have a great line up of highly respected speakers and informative programs, including Lunch and Learn sessions. The social events include the Domain Lunch Rush, Happy Hour and the Blue Party. The 2014 Partners and Exhibitors will be ready to inform you of their quality products and dedicated services. The annual membership meeting will happen! Together with your families and office staff, help us make this totally cool conference…totally memorable! — Kevin Gureckis, DMD, MAGD President Elect

olympics

Dental Olympics started over a decade ago as a way for the three Texas dental schools to gather together for a full day of fun and friendly sports. The idea was that individuals from the different schools could meet each other and begin networking.

to take advantage of that. It will be up to the student council three years from now to decide whether or not to repeat that event or find something different. Volleyball and softball are always pretty popular. Men’s soccer gets very competitive as well.

It has become quite competitive over the years. This year, the overall winner was San Antonio.

The event took place at UTSD Rec Center; we provided lunch, water and sports drinks to all participants. One of the major challenges we faced in coordinating an event so large was the logistics of fields and scheduling multiple sports.

As VP of Student Council, I was in charge of coordinating the event; however, our President, Andre Nguyen, Secretary, Alicia Bush and Treasurer, Macey Cartrite all worked together to make this event a success. We also had captains for the individual sports to help organize teams. Every year, the host school gets to select a sport that isn’t part of the regular schedule; this year we chose swimming. We decided on swimming because we are fortunate here in Houston to have a pool at our rec center so we wanted

SUMMER 2014

My experience with leadership all started when Dr. Steven Vaughn asked me to attend a first time conference for new dentists in Austin, TX. The speaker was Dr. Bill Robbins and the topic was “Smile Design a Global Diagnosis.” I took my wife to the meeting and we both had a great time. Only a few weeks after the meeting, I was asked to serve on the Texas Academy of General Dentistry’s New Dentist Committee. Our primary objective was to better the lives of the new dentists in the state. We have been working at that goal by establishing new dentist study clubs around the state as well as planning the New Dentist Conference each year. After being on the committee for one year, I was asked to be the Chairman and then was asked to be the conference chair. It has been a pleasure to work with the outstanding young dentists that comprise our committee. We hold conference calls about every quarter and that is where a lot of the planning happens. It is very satisfying to be on one of the phone calls when a little idea grows into something awesome. The synergy is remarkable. This year’s conference was better than the previous three years and I know next year’s conference will be even better. It was great to see my friends and colleagues that I have come to know from around the state. Life as an AGD member is good and I look forward to continuing to serve. — Dath Collins, DDS 2014 New Dentist Conference Chair

z o dentist

I began my dental career when I graduated from the University of Texas San Antonio dental school in 1996. I did a one year AGD in the US Air Force and spent two more years’ active duty and then entered private practice in 1999. One of my favorite parts about being a dentist is getting to meet and treat numerous wonderful people. Dentistry has always fascinated me because it regularly provides new mental and physical challenges. In 2004, I got a challenge that I never could have predicted. One of my patients was a curator at the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, TX and asked if I could help with a Lion that had an infection on a front tooth. I accepted in eager anticipation. Although I had never thought I would be working on animals, I always had a desire to be involved in the care of zoo animals and here was my chance! I geared up for surgery as they explained that the lion had apparently jumped off and fallen

and broken his tooth. It had abscessed and had a draining fistula near his nose. They sedated the juvenile and I went in and removed the remaining pieces and cleaned out the area. It was a fantastic and fascinating experience and I was hooked! One of the major differences I’ve learned since operating on animals is that some of them have roots that are incredibly longer than a humans’ and they can even be wrapped into the jaw bone making extraction impossible. For example, I was called in to work on one of the Javelinas because it was killing the turkeys in its enclosure with its tusks. Since it would be impossible to remove the tusks without removing the jaw as well, we used a wire with cutting surface to blunt the tips of the tusks! One of the most complicated cases I have had to work on was a black bear that had an abscess. We tried to take an x-ray but could not get a diagnostic image. It was hard to keep her well sedated and we had to step back and let the vet

team get her more sedated before we could continue. We ended up not doing anything and the bear has been doing well so far. Fingers crossed! Since there isn’t routine dental care scheduled for the animals, I only work when a problem arises. It is always a massive undertaking; there is always a risk of sedation so the zoo and I work with a very large team of people anytime there needs to be work to ensure the health of the animals. One of my most memorable cases was working on a male orangutan that had a tooth that was loose and jabbing out at a 90 degree angle, sticking out past his lip. It was making it difficult for him to eat since it was rubbing his lip. I ended up taking out his lower front tooth and now every time he gives a grin, he shows that space and I laugh and say “I did that”. I’m proud of that space! Now when I visit the zoo, it is an added reward to be able to see my handiwork. — Richard Hansard, DDS Heart of Texas AGD Photo by Laney Van Antwerp
