MasterTrack is open for those wishing to attain their Fellowship, Mastership, Lifelong Learning and Service Recognition (LLSR) award or who just want to participate in quality education. The program is set up so participants can earn the hours they need to achieve their professional goals in an organized and manageable time frame. AGD’s LLSR award is given to Masters who wholly embrace the AGD’s core principles and ideals even after achieving Mastership. They continue their commitment to lifelong learning, volunteer their services to communities in need, act as mentors to associates and new dentists, and act as a voice of the general dentistry by participating in organized dentistry.

Participation hours earned while working on Fellowship can be applied to Mastership • For more information call 512-244-0577 JOURNAL OF THE TEXAS ACADEMY OF GENERAL DENTISTRY • WINTER 2009

A Great Dentist Goes to Washington

A Great Dentist Goes to Washington is an AGD initiative that helps dentists from around the country travel to Washington D. C. for a day-long session of advocacy training followed by visits to their congressmen and senators on Capitol Hill. Last year 58 AGD members attended and together the interests of general dentists were communicated to more than 100 legislatures and their staff. More importantly, attendees returned home with skills to share to other AGD members in order to help with advocacy efforts on the state and local level.

Star of the South Dental Meeting • Houston AGD Sponsored Speaker The Dental Team Versus the Reluctant Dragon • Presented by Dr. Marvin Berman Thursday, April 16 • 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. 6 CE Hours • Technical and Scientific Audience: D, H, C, A, S

Dentists: $60

Building and sustaining a successful practice is no easy matter. Children today are not the children of yesterday. Parents are in a dilemma about child rearing and arrive in our offices in states of anxiety with kids who are out of control wreaking havoc upon the sensibilities of parents, teachers, doctors, and all authority figures. “No! Stop! Please and Thank You! are becoming extinct. Instead we have “self-esteem, “quality time, and “time-out. That’s the challenge for the dentist and the dental team. Using live-action videotapes, Dr. Berman will illustrate a multitude of tricks and techniques for turning even the most recalcitrant child into a cooperative one, without sedation, nitrous oxide or papoose boards. This program will help improve the participant’s ability to: ■Evaluate and deal with the parent-child-family relationship ■Achieve success using a behavioral, drug-free approach ■Understand and implement current clinical pediatric techniques

He is the co-author of Essentials of Modern Dental Practice.

AGD’s Advocacy Webpage A great way to stay up to date on issues affecting the general dentist is through the AGD’s advocacy web page. Here, members can see what are the hot legislative issues in the country as well as monitor activity in their own state. AGD also has information and manuals to prepare members for grass roots advocacy efforts and has several tools to help members contact their state legislators. For these helpful services and more visit www.agd.org.

Jack T. Clark Foundation In 2008 the Jack T. Clark Foundation (JTCF) screened over 600 people and it was recommended that almost 15 percent of those seen visit a dentist within one week for follow-up examinations. Each of these patients received educational materials regarding oral cancer issues. The Foundation participated in 10 oral cancer screening events throughout the state and has educated over 200 dental professionals. Join us in our fight against oral cancer so that we can educate even more in 2009! The oral cancer screenings are provided by the JTCF with support from the Texas Academy of General Dentistry in conjunction with the Dental Oncology Education Program and the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, as a part of the Texas campaign to raise awareness of oral cancer among dental professionals. About Oral Cancer

Resources

Oral cancer includes cancers of the mouth and the throat. About two-thirds of oral cancers occur in the mouth and about one-third are in the throat.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY Phone: (800) ACS-2345 http://www.cancer.org

Oral cancer is diagnosed in about 28,000 Americans each year and causes about 7,200 deaths. Oral cancer is two times more common in men than in women and 35% more common in black men than in white men.

JACK T. CLARK FOUNDATION Phone: (512) 244-0577 http://www.tagd.org/pages/clark.html

Oral cancer spreads quickly. Currently, only half of those diagnosed with the disease survive more than five years. This is why early diagnosis and treatment is so important. Early diagnosis saves lives.

Preventing Oral Cancer Lower Your Risk Most oral cancer is preventable. 75% of oral cancers are related to tobacco use, alcohol use, or the use of both together. Using both tobacco and alcohol puts you at much greater risk than using either tobacco or alcohol alone. Do not use tobacco products -- cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff, pipes or cigars. Tobacco in all forms increases your risk for all cancers including oral cancer.

NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE Phone: (800) 4-CANCER, TTY: (800) 332-8615 http://www.cancer.gov NATIONAL ORAL HEALTH INFORMATION CLEARINGHOUSE Phone: (301) 402-7364 http://www.nidcr.nih.gov/HealthInformation ORAL CANCER FOUNDATION http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org TEXAS DEPARTMENT STATE HEALTH SERVICES Phone: (888) 963-7111, TDD: (512) 458-7708 http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/ U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AGENCY FOR HEALTH CARE POLICY AND RESEARCH (AHCPR), Phone: (301) 427-1364; TDD: (888) 586-6340 http://www.ahrq.gov/

Drinking 1.6 oz. or more of alcohol per day doubles your risk for oral cancer as well as the risk for other cancers. Use lip balm that contains sunscreen. Exposure to sunlight is the number one cause for lip cancer. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Eating at least five fruits and vegetables per day as a part of a low fat, high fiber diet may help reduce cancer risk. A healthy diet can reduce your overall cancer risk by 30%.

The JTCF, in affiliation with the Dental Oncology Education Program and the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, is offering brochures titled “Because We Care About Your Health, You Were Screened For Oral Cancer.” The brochure contains information about oral cancer, the early warning signs, images of abnormal lesions and information on how to perform a self examination.

Place personal sticker here

The purpose is for you to distribute the brochure to your patient once you screen them for oral cancer so that you can provide them with further information regarding the significance of the screening. We provide these brochures free of charge. Please help us in our mission to inform the public of the risks of oral cancer. If you would like to order these brochures please contact Meg at 512-244-0577 or Meg@tagd.org

The Smiles Foundation invited the JTCF to assist with Smiles on Wheels, helping the Foundation to reach hundreds more who are in need of dental care in an effort to educate them on oral cancer.

Smiles on Wheels is a mini version of the current, large-scale Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) series. While TMOMs cater to urbanized areas and provide emergent care to 800-1,200 patients, Smiles on Wheels is a smaller, rural-county-based program that rolls into a small community, sets up 10 operatories and hopes to service 100+ members of that immediate area over a single day. For more information about Smiles on Wheels visit www.TDA.org and if you would like to volunteer with the JTCF as we assist the Smiles Foundation in the triage portion of Smiles on Wheels contact Meg at Meg@tagd.org or call 512-244-0577.

Greater New York Dental Meeting Thanksgiving With the AGD’s Capwiz program, it is easy for Constituent leaders and members to work with AGD’s advocacy department to create specially drafted e-mails to legislators, the governor, local media outlets and others regarding dental issues. After these customized messages have been created, AGD Headquarters can send an e-mail to all members in your constituent asking them to take action. Since the launch of Capwiz in 2006, AGD members have sent 6,611 e-mail alerts. National issues that generated plenty of activity included responding to a Money magazine article about dentistry, responding to the AAP guidelines, and promoting Dental Awareness Day, which was celebrated on Aug. 4, 2006. In addition to national alerts, many local issues have been supported or opposed through Capwiz. For more information go to the Advocacy page of the AGD Web site. Once there, click on the Capwiz link.

Get Back on Track for Mastership With Help from TAGD In 2003 AGD switched methods they use to track CE hours. As a result those of you who received your AGD Fellowship before 2003 may have had some of your CE hours dropped from your transcript. TAGD wants to help you recover these hours and get back on track in obtaining your Mastership. We are offering members the opportunity to contact our office and help you recover those dropped hours in order to see how close you are to receiving your Mastership. CE hours we can help you recover include participation hours earned while working on your Fellowship because they can now be applied to your Mastership as well. If you are interested please contact the TAGD office at 512-244-0577 or toll-free 877-464-8243

About the TAGD MasterTrack Program

TAGD MasterTrack is a protocol type program set up in two-session segments for each track. Each Session is 3 1/2 days beginning with protocol presentations on Thursday. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday begin new topics. Participants that complete a four year track in Houston, Austin or Dallas will earn the minimum 400 participation hours needed for Mastership. Participants are expected to earn the additional 200 lecture hours at local CE meetings during this period.
