The Bible teaches us to listen to the Word, and do what it says. Since 1886, the churches and staff of this convention have been putting God’s Word to work, inspiring the greatest possible activity in evangelism, missions, Christian education and benevolent work. Together, on mission with God, we are pushing back the lostness of our state, sharing Christ and showing love.

WHO WE ARE
Who makes up the convention? You do. The people in the 5,300 Texas Baptist churches. The 2.3 million of you. The Convention meets together each year at the Annual Meeting - not all 2.3 million church members go to Annual Meeting, but the messengers voted on by your church represent you. These messengers vote on the Convention’s annual budget, help direct future action and missions of the BGCT, and voice any direction or concern from your church to the greater body of Texas Baptists. History of the Convention Baptist work in Texas is older than the state itself. The first Baptist service was held in 1820, and the first Baptist church was established in 1834 when Daniel Parker led a Primitive Baptist congregation to Texas from Illinois. Over the next six years, numerous Baptist churches were formed. In 1840, three churches organized the Union Baptist Association, the first in Texas. By 1848, many churches saw the need for a statewide body. Representatives of these churches gathered and formed the Baptist State Convention. In the 1850’s and 1860’s, other statewide bodies were formed, the strongest of these new groups being the Baptist General Association. By the 1880’s, many believed that Baptist work in the state could be strengthened if the statewide bodies would unite. The Baptist State Convention and the Baptist General Association began formal merger talks in the fall of 1885. From those
talks, a special committee agreed to form a new consolidated body to be called the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT), and on June 29, 1886, the first session of this new convention was held. From its inception in 1886, the BGCT has been actively involved in evangelism, missions, Christian education and benevolent ministries. The BGCT has supported and established numerous schools and seminaries, assisted in the development of hospitals, children’s homes and homes for the aged, and continues to help start and strengthen churches that seek to share Christ and show love with every person in the state. Throughout its existence, the BGCT has weathered controversies, recessions, a major depression and wars to become the largest state convention of its kind. Today, we are more than 5,300 churches on mission with God, sharing Christ and showing love.

Great Commission Team
The Great Commission Team brings discipleship, evangelism and music & worship together under one umbrella to help churches train believers and reach unbelievers of all ages. Reaching today’s youth requires an impactful and truthful presentation of the Gospel. This age group is searching for something in life and has more options presented to them than any generation before. That’s where Conclave comes in. Conclave, a training ministry of Texas Baptists Youth Discipleship and the Great Commission Team, is a three-in-one conference for ministers and laypersons who serve in youth, family and NextGen ministries in the local church. Attendees receive encouragement

and training, experience worship, and benefit from networking with other youth, family and NextGen ministers. “It was such a blessing to attend and learn relevant information,” said Becky Reynolds, a youth worker from Cornerstone Fellowship Church in El Paso. “It is so important for youth ministers and leaders to remain informed as youth culture changes from generation to generation. Thank you for allowing such a vital training to happen.”

Missions Team
The Missions Team is a specialized unit that connects local churches with mission opportunities in their neighborhoods, in Texas, along the border, around the country and across the world. Ryan and Arin Thompson felt a burden for reaching their friends and family with the Gospel in their hometown of Nederland, Texas. The Thompsons opened their home and began a community group in their living room. “We started a Gospel-centered community living on mission for Jesus, and seeing the fruit of that work became the catalyst for a new church start,” said Ryan. “We set out with this vision given to us by the Lord to start a church and partner with other great local churches in our city to seek and

to save the lost, to see disciples matured into Christ-likeness, and to see our community transformed by the power of the Gospel.” After months of meeting in their home, Ryan went through Texas Baptists Church Planting Center training and began laying the groundwork for Cornerstone Church. Three years later, more than 100 people meet each week in community groups to learn the essentials of discipleship, evangelism and growing in their faith.

Christian Life Commission
The Christian Life Commission is the ethics, public policy and community impact ministry of Texas Baptists. The CLC challenges Christ-followers to boldly live out biblical commands to pursue righteousness, seek justice, and serve others. In mid-January 2019, busloads of people streamed into Washington, D.C. for the annual March for Life. One week later, thousands gathered at Austin’s Rally for Life. Gus Reyes, director of Texas Baptists Christian Life Commission (CLC), attended both events. Large numbers of students and young adults attended the events, and thousands of students lifted up the importance and value of life. Reyes commented that more and more pro-life advocates understand that it is not just about abortion; it is important to promote the value of human life from conception to natural death. 10
While speaking at the Austin event, Reyes noted that Texas Baptists believe every person is created in the image of God and, therefore, deserves our respect and honor from conception. Reyes read from Psalms 139:13-16 and called for all Texans to work together to respect human life, promote the welfare of women and their children and influence politics to ensure that these children and women are protected. Pro-life is not just a political stance; it is approach to life itself that is rooted in God’s revelation, the Bible.

Connections Team
The Connections Team is the primary intersection between pastors and the array of resources and ministries available through Texas Baptists. Bivocational pastors have two fulltime jobs. They are fully committed to both their churches and their vocational jobs.
Ira said, adding that another challenge these pastors face is finding balance in their lives and getting adequate rest.
“Bivocational ministers can work up to 75 hours a week,” said Director of Bivocational Ministry Ira Antoine. “Forty hours on a secular job and at least 30 on church work.”
Another aspect of the ministry is regional retreats for the ministers and their spouses.
Texas Baptists Bivocational Ministry exists to encourage and equip these church leaders, who comprise almost 50 percent of our pastors. “They may not have a formal theological education, so we do training and equipping workshops on weekends,”

Collegiate Ministry Team
The Collegiate Ministry Team (Texas BSM) seeks to engage more than 1.6 million Texas college students to follow Christ and transform the world. Reid Burkett, Baptist Student Ministry (BSM) director at Wayland Baptist University (WBU), has seen firsthand the impact that BSM has on students’ lives, including his own. When he was a sophomore at Howard Payne University (HPU), Reid came to know the Lord. As a new believer who felt called to ministry, Reid became involved with the HPU BSM, saying that their director was the first person to invite him in and give him a chance to learn and do ministry. “It’s had a huge impact in my life,” he said. “I wouldn’t be in ministry today if it wasn’t for HPU BSM.” As a BSM director now at WBU, Reid’s story has come full circle, and he wants to give the same chance to Wayland students 14
that was given to him. One of those students is named Kaili. In the fall of 2018, upon hearing the Gospel presentation at the BSM’s first Monday night gathering, Kaili couldn’t shake the feeling that she needed more in her life. After sleepless nights and conversations with the BSM’s leadership team, Kaili approached Reid at a BSM free lunch. There, he was able to pray with her and lead her to Christ. Since then, Kaili has been baptized and plugged in to BSM. Three of Kaili’s friends also now participate in BSM. “She’s not the same person,” Reid said. The Lord is working through the lives of BSM directors and students all over the state.

Cultural Engagement Team
Texas grows more culturally diverse each year. Through African American, Hispanic and Intercultural Ministries, Texas Baptists churches are reaching around the world, beginning in Texas. Education is important work for Texas Baptists Hispanic Ministries – for students and for parents. They have a hand in community parenting classes, raising funds for college scholarships for Hispanic students and in GED classes for adults who desire to finish high school. This ministry, led by Director Rolando Rodriguez, helps churches help communities. One such church is Erez Church in Duncanville. On a weekly basis, the church ministers to

and disciples over 30 college students who are attending higher learning institutions in the area. “We are doing more than just investing in the education of students by providing scholarships to meet their financial needs. We are investing in their lives and developing their leadership potential,” said Rodriguez. “Erez Church is reaching the next generation.”

Church Matching & Protection Benefit Program
Texas Baptists Church Matching and Protection Benefit Program Doing God’s work leaves little time for matters such as insurance, disability protection, and retirement planning. That’s why we joined with GuideStone® Financial Resources to offer the Church Matching and Protection Benefit Program. It’s a simple, yet comprehensive, way to give your church leaders and employees access to a retirement plan and coverage against uncertainties of the future.
Benefits The opportunity to enjoy the benefits of the Church Matching & Protection Benefit Program is a result of participation in the GuideStone Church Retirement Plan. This 403(b)(9) retirement program has been designed specifically for Baptist churches. The Church Retirement Plan helps participants legally reduce taxes while saving for retirement. If your church or association contributes undesignated gifts through the Texas Baptists Cooperative Program, your pastor, ministers, and non-ministerial staff may qualify for a variety of benefits, including: • Matching Convention funds to the Church Retirement Plan • Disability insurance • Survivor protection benefits

Matching Funds
Qualification
Pastors and eligible staff may have their contributions to the retirement plan augmented by matching funds from the Convention. After the church or minister contributes $52.50 per month to the retirement plan, Texas Baptists provides matching on the next $52.50 that is contributed. Current rules allow a $1 match for every $3 contributed by the minister or church, up to a maximum match of $17.50 per month. Matching is available for pastors and ministerial staff only.
You and your church can start offering the plan simply by making the qualifying yearly contributions to the Texas Baptists Cooperative Program.*
Disability Insurance Coverage This benefit provides monthly income of up to $500 per month if the covered employee becomes disabled, as well as a monthly contribution to his or her retirement account.
Participants & Contributions For every participant your church desires to offer the plan, $500 in qualifying contributions must be given each year.
Who qualifies for protection? All benefits – matching funds, disability coverage, and survivor benefits – are available to: • Pastors
Up to $100,000 in Survivor Protection Whether treated as primary coverage (for younger church staff members) or supplementary to existing life insurance, this offers important protection for that person’s family – paying the benefit to the spouse or other named beneficiary at the death of the covered employee.
• Ministerial Staff • Encampment leaders and staff Disability insurance and survivor benefits only are available to non-ministerial staff members who: • Have at least three years of paid service with the eligible church or organization • Work an average of 20 hours per week

Director, Cultural Engagement Team & Mega Associations The Cultural Engagement Team exists to enable Texas Baptists to reach more our state and beyond through contextualized ministry and mission efforts. In light of Hispanic Ministries being one of the three cultural offices housed in our team, alongside African American Ministries and Intercultural Ministries,
I am encouraged to see the inclusion of this Spanish-specific content within this piece. This represents a step taken to intentionally reach our Hispanic brothers and sisters as we continue to strive toward everyone having an opportunity to add to our great Texas Baptists family.

As the director of the Office of Hispanic Ministries at Texas Baptists, I am excited to see this section appear within this piece! More than 20% of the churches affiliated with our organization are Hispanic, so the inclusion of this content represents a strategic decision to make this information easier to access for myself and my Spanish-speaking brothers and sisters. The goal of my office is to
serve Hispanic Baptist congregations across our state by helping them reach the goals the Lord has given them, assisting them in their ministry by connecting them to the wide variety of resources and support available through our office. I believe we need everything translated into Spanish, and with pieces like this becoming more normal, I believe we will get there.

Cómo afiliarse
Para que las buenas nuevas de Jesús alcancen nuestro estado y el mundo las iglesias debemos trabajar juntas. Esta convención es un movimiento de gente de Dios que demuestran su amor a Cristo por medio del fortalecimiento de las iglesias, transformando comunidades y conectando las naciones de Cristo. Estamos contentos de ofrecer a su iglesia la oportunidad de unirse a este movimiento, colaborando con otras 5,300 iglesias aproximadamente y disfrutando de los numerosos beneficios, que incluyen:
Siga estos simples pasos para convertirse en un miembro activo de la convención estatal más grande de su clase. Es tan fácil como uno, dos, tres: 1.
