Bass Tub

More than a Boat Show

Get up-close views of a big bass striking a lure, as professional angler Chuck Devereaux demonstrates a variety of techniques for casting and retrieval. Visitors to this year’s show will marvel at the giant 5,000-gallon Bass Tub aquarium, which offers views from both sides and stands nine feet tall. A Bass Tub is a unique aquarium, over 40 feet long, which rolls down the highway as a gooseneck trailer and is transformed into a natural habitat for thirty to forty fish of various species. To simulate the conditions normally found in nature, the tank comes fully stocked with rocks, stumps and dozens of live fish. Using live fish during our demonstrations offers you the chance to see the fish and lure presentation in action. This is a great educational experience for the newbie and the veteran. Throughout the ten days of the show, fishing fanatics will find Devereaux perched on top of the massive tank as he demonstrates the proper use of fishing lures and offers other helpful suggestions. Stop by and see how your favorite fish reacts to Devereaux’s techniques and get a firsthand look at how lures operate in the water. The goal of the BASS TUB is to entertain by demonstrating fishing techniques. We want spectators to get excited about fishing! We share fishing information from a seasoned professional for individuals who are experienced anglers as well those amateurs who want to learn. This information teaches you the basics and professional tricks of the trade for effective fishing! Chuck also likes to hang around and answer questions.

audiences throughout the nation. Presenting almost 1000 educational programs to over 10 million people annually, The Raptor Project leads the way in outstanding, top quality, professional wildlife education. Featuring 15-20 raptors from diverse habitats at each presentation, these dynamic fierce predators capture hearts of both young and old. The Raptor Project founders, Jonathan and Susan Wood of New York’s Catskill mountains have

assembled a traveling collection of feathered predators that is unrivaled in scope and size anywhere in the world. Jonathan Wood is a Master Falconer and Wildlife Rehabilitation, bringing unique insights, observations and humor to his exciting, riveting, nationally acclaimed shows. Many of the birds in The Raptor Project have permanent handicaps and have been donated to his project by crowded wildlife centers around the country because they were unable to be

re-introduced to the wild. Some faced euthanasia and now have been tamed and trained to educate the public as charming ambassadors of their species and the environments they inhabit. Jonathan and Susan Wood and their staff operate the organization from a beautiful 14-acre, private facility in New York’s Catskill mountains. All birds are housed, exercised and cared for in spacious, state of the art aviaries. Jonathan Wood works with birds in a wide range of sizes. From small falcons and owls weighing 3-4 ounces to majestic eagles with 6-8-foot wingspans. He is honored with 35 years of handling experience and has produced and presented The Raptor Project to over 10 million people... up close and personal!

Activities for Kids

and screws driven by battery-powered drills. During the show each participating child will be issued a ticket to hold and we will conduct a drawing at the end of the last session to select the winner who gets to keep the finished boat! Children can also help rebuild a 1955 Evinrude 5½ hp classic outboard motor! This will be a real nuts and bolts, hands-on experience on how all the individual parts fit together to make up a real operating engine.

The Golden Age of Boating

Build-A-Boat

Our rainbow trout (native to the rivers and lakes of North America) tank is fully stocked with this hard-fighting and tasty fish. Fish-O-Rama is a great opportunity to introduce kids to the challenge of fishing and once you catch the “big one” anglers can decide to take their catch home with them or just take home the story of the one that got away at the Houston Boat Show. So come by, grab one of the already baited fishing poles, and get ready to hook your own prize rainbow trout. Personnel are on hand to help with your catch. Anglers can keep or release their fish, and staff will even bag it for you to take home. Plan on hanging around the show a little longer? No problem; they can even keep your catch on ice until you are ready to reel it in for the day. Don’t miss your chance to hook ‘The Big Catch’ at the 2019 Houston Boat Show. Bungie Trampoline: Jump to new heights as you bounce on a trampoline pod and sore high into the air with the help of massive bungee ropes! This 4-pod bungee trampoline is sure to thrill. Fun for all ages, the 4-pod bungee trampoline use a continuous air flow system to inflate pods that function as mini moonwalks which in-turn allows the jumpers to reach heights over 25 feet. Inflatable Slide and Bounce House: Get ready to rocket down a massive 24-foot inflatable slide. The fun never ends as kids race down the 2 lane inflatable slide. Designed with safety in mind, the 8 |

2019-BoatShowProgram.indd 8

24-foot giant slide has a no-jump top, to force riders to slide down properly, keeping them secure. For the kid who loves thrill rides, double the lanes means double the fun on this super fun and fast slide. Hands-On Fun: The Boat Show offers hands on activities for kids! Children of all ages are invited on Saturdays and Sundays to help build an 8-foot wooden dinghy-style boat, help rebuild a 1955 Evinrude 5½ hp classic outboard motor and/or paint in color on our white enamel 8’ pram. The Southwest Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society will conduct supervised boat-building sessions on both Saturdays, Jan. 5th and Jan. 12th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and both Sundays, Jan. 6th and Jan. 13th from 12 to 4 p.m. This event is open free of charge to all children who wish to participate. The boat is an 8-foot pram-style dinghy. All the wood pieces will have already been cut. Assembly is by clamps, glue

Visit the Antique & Classic Boat display at the Houston Boat Show and relive the golden age of boating! Whether you are interested in the heritage of boating, historic preservation or just the romance of an era gone by, you won’t want to miss the lovingly restored vintage boats at this year’s show. Sleek styling, varnished mahogany wood exteriors, leather interiors, and polished chrome hardware – all serve to distinguish these beautiful boats. The display is sponsored by the Southwest Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society. Serving Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas, the group is dedicated to bringing people together with a common interest in preserving and enjoying antique and classic boats. They strive to protect the heritage of boating by promoting, first the preservation and, secondly, the restoration of historic antique and classic boats.

STORY BY LENNY RUDOW

M

ODERN BOATS ARE NOTHING like those of our parent’s generation – for that matter, they’re far advanced over the boats we saw hitting the market just a decade or so ago. As is true of so many aspects of modern life, a combination of raising consumer

JAN

2019-BoatShowProgram.indd 11

4 -1 3

expectations and improving available technology has led today’s boats to evolve at a rather break-neck pace. The net result? Today’s boats are quite simply better.

Power Play

The most obvious way today’s boats have changed is visible right on the stern: they carry more power. In many cases, a lot more power. Triple and even quad

| 11

Higher power configurations are on the boating menu for 2019.

engine rigs are commonplace today, and at least one new boat has a brace of five outboards sitting on the transom. Even on smaller more common center consoles and bay boats, however, you’ll find larger and larger powerplants. Thanks to the development of several different 300 and 350 horsepower production outboards, a 20-something fishing boat rigged with 350 horses, which has a cruising speed in the mid to upper 40s and a top-end of 60 or more mph, is not unusual.

12 |

J AN

2019-BoatShowProgram.indd 12

4 -1 3

Along with larger outboards, hull designs have developed to better harness the power that’s available to them. Many new hulls incorporate steps, notches, and other forms of air-induction or handling-enhancing tweaks and modifications. Jack plates have also become more and more common and today are even seen as standard features on some models. Another aspect of modern power systems which enhances our use of boats is the integration of electronic controls

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT, SPORT & TRAVEL SHOW

which go far beyond mere shift and throttle. Joystick controls are now common on outboard boats, and have been for a few years. But in the recent past they’ve begun adding control features which can greatly enhance your fishing endeavors. You can press a button and hover your boat in place over a wreck or reef; press another to jog the boat 10 feet in one direction or another; press again and allow it to drift but maintain its heading; or press one more and maintain both the heading and the position. And if your boat has an electric trolling motor on the bow this same sort of control can be taken even farther, as you can not only control positioning but even follow bottom contours as the boat moves through the water.

Comfort Zone

Another way in which many modern boats have become better is in how they treat you while you’re aboard. Several of the latest bay boats and center consoles have mister systems built right into the hard top, to keep you from frying on a sweltering summer day. Many larger models have actual air conditioning systems which blast a refreshing breeze through the helm-deck and in a few cases, even the open cockpit. Seating also has a leg up over what we found on older craft. Designing in better and better ergonomics is a constant challenge for boat builders, and in front of the center console where we once found blocky coolers with cushions snapped on top, today you’ll often discover large, comfortable loungers. Forward seats in the bow have also grown better, thanks to the addition of removable and/or fold-away backrests. Transom bench seats have evolved to fold into narrower compartments, ultimately opening up more deck space for fishermen. And today many boats also feature similar seats that can fold out from the sides of the cockpit, as well. Regardless of which of these seating arrangements you’re considering, all have benefitted from vastly improved vinyl treatment processes. Today’s upholstery is commonly more UV- and 2 0 1 9

12/13/18 5:27 PM

wells with sub-par circulation). They’re also more numerous on today’s models, and while most older boats had a single livewell, today seeing three on a welldesigned boat is not at all unusual. Finally, if you’ve looked at a number of new boats recently you may have noticed that designers constantly get better and better at planning in stowage for our fishing-related equipment. Not just onboard tackleboxes, but also dedicated compartments with recesses or chocks for securing five-gallon buckets; locking rodboxes for large numbers of

rods and reels; and strategically placed tool holders and racks. What do all of these advancements boil down to? The fact that our original assertion – today’s boats are better than those of yester-year – is demonstrably on-target. Yes, modern boats are expensive. Of course, they aren’t perfect. But when you consider all of the advancements of recent years, there simply can be no arguing the point. And for once, our parent’s generation would agree.

l

Jack plates are getting more popular.

stain-resistant than that of the past as a result. But better yet, the introduction of anti-microbial treatments means that you can go for years without battling the mold and mildew that defaces the seats of so many older boats. One more comfort-inducing trend: the appearance of head compartments in smaller and smaller dual console boats. While it’s true that most sportsmen will opt for center consoles, the dual console design enjoys an enduring popularity because it works so well as both a fishing boat and a family boat. And while those ever-important heads could be found on large models in the past, recently they’ve begun showing up in much smaller models.

Fishing for Complements

Even fishing features have gotten a leg up, on today’s modern angling machines. Do you remember when virtually all fishing boats had four flushmounted gunwale rodholders, and that was it? Today a huge number of builders have managed to design in multiple transom rod holders as well. Livewells, meanwhile, just seem to keep getting better and better. A decade ago pressurized wells which seal at the hatch (and eliminate sloshing and spilling) were few and far between, but today they’re commonplace. Same goes for exterior viewing ports, baby-blue interiors (which keep baits calmer than a white interior) and multi-level inlets (which eliminate “dead spots” that can form in JAN

WEATHER WATCH

Safe Boating

W

IND AND RAIN ARE the bane of boaters, trapping us on shore when we’d much rather be out there on the water. When it comes to weather, of course,

discretion is the better part of valor— decide to go out when there are 30 knot gusts and lightning strikes, and you will not be a happy camper. That said, if you cancel your day of fishing every time your friendly local schizophrenic weatherman claims there’s a

risk, you may well never leave the dock. Fortunately, you have gobs of options when it comes to making an educated decision about the weather. In fact, in the past couple of years those options have rapidly multiplied, thanks to the internet, apps, and new inventions. Here are some of the latest and greatest ways to figure out what’s in store.

Weather Web

Getting on the web is a whole new experience these days, weather-wise. Sure, you still have those old stand-bys, like weatherchannel.com, weatherunderground.com, and your local news. But some newer sites that focus purely on marine forecasting have taken it a step farther. Buoyweather.com, for instance, includes not just forecasts but also realtime weather buoy data, wave charts, sea temperature and chlorophyll charts, and tide data. And since the forecasting is based around a chart (choose Texas from the Gulf States list, put the cursor over your specific area, and click), it’s incredibly easy to use. Another good one is Fishweather.com. In fact, I’ve 28 |

become so accustomed to using this site that I almost never leave the dock without checking it first. Fishweather overlays wind forecasts over a detailed NOAA chart, allowing you to choose the exact location and see all the wind, wave, and sea condition data. What’s even better is the ability to break down the forecasts into three hour increments. For those of us who are sick and tired of NOAA’s overly-broad and unspecific marine forecasts, Fishweather is a hands-down winner. Another nice thing about using the web for your weather is that you can continue checking it throughout the day, if you have a smart phone. Added bonus: you can set your phone to give you alerts, in case of deteriorating weather. Which leads us to...

APPlied Science

Since that smart phone is in your pocket, why not take full advantage of it? You can choose from countless weather apps these days, although you should recognize that some are a lot better than others. A handful of the most popular include Weatherbug, Weather Underground, The Weather Channel, Bluefin, and Lightning Finder. All have their own strengths and weaknesses. Here are some key things to look for when you choose which weather app is best for you. Obviously, you’ll want to make sure it covers the areas where you regularly go fishing and boating. Remember, some apps only cover specific regions for free, and you’ll have to pay extra to get complete coverage. Another important item is the availability of current Doppler radar images. Many apps (or free versions of apps which can be upgraded for a fee) only provide text forecasts. These are usually based on those same NOAA predictions (sometimes they appear verbatim), which really doesn’t help much. On the other hand, real-time animated Doppler lets you see storms to track their direction and speed of travel. This is a great help in deciding when you need to head back to the dock. Graphic lightning displays are another great feature to look for. Lightning JAN

is one of those things we boaters really want to avoid. So, seeing when and where strikes are occurring can help you make much more intelligent go/ no-go decisions. Some apps also include wind speed data, either in an updated or forecasted form. Generally speaking, forecasts don’t do you much good unless you’re on the water for an extended period of time. But real-time wind updates are great for helping you identify trends, the approach of fronts, or changes in the current conditions.

More Tools

Now, let’s say you don’t get reliable— or any—cell service in some of the areas you go boating. There are still some weather tools you can utilize. The first and best is satellite weather, such as Sirius/XM satellite. In most cases it can interface with your chartplotter/GPS, and put those weather maps and forecasts right up on the helm. This is a more expensive option than most others. A receiver costs between $100 and $500 depending on brand, and you’ll also have to pay a monthly access fee which ranges from about $10 to $50/month (depending on what level of service you choose). But that expense gets you everything

those apps and web sites offer, and then some. Finally, for the lightning-averse among us, you can also get a dedicated lightning detector. These don’t cost much ($50 to $100) and are simple to use. Aside from all of these goodies and gadgets (technology be damned) you still have those old weather rules that mariners have lived by for centuries. So, no matter what gear and goodies you may or may not have on board, always remember: —Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. —Red sky in morning, sailors take warning. —When grass is dry at morning light, look for rain before the night. —Sound traveling far and wide, a stormy day it does betide. —When wind blows from west, fish bite the best; when it blows from east, fish bite the least. —When clouds look like rocks and towers, you should expect frequent showers. —Seagulls, seagulls, sitting on sand, it’s never good weather when you’re on land.

Support for Boaters

OATING IS AN ACTIVity that requires a certain amount of know-how, which most of us pick up through experience. But, how’s someone who’s new to boating supposed to learn their port from their starboard? A good starting point is the boating safety class all new boaters are required to take. Anyone born after 1993 must take this course before they operate a powerboat in the state of Texas, and anyone who’s not already very experienced on the water, regardless of their age, will be well-served by taking it. (Just go to www. boat-ed.com). Of course, there’s plenty to learn beyond taking the minimum required safety course. Fortunately, in this day and age there are also plenty of organizations and publications out there which are ready and willing to lend a hand. Discover Boating, one of the most helpful you’ll find, is a public awareness campaign managed by the NMMA (National Marine Manufacturer’s Association). Go to www.discoverboat-

ing.org, and you can get a free starter CD with gobs of information on boats and boating. You can also read up on different types of boats, what you need to know about owning and operating them, and financing and insuring boats—there’s even an online “spousal conversion kit” that might come in handy if your better half is still on the fence. You prefer reading things the old-fashioned way, on paper? Not a problem; visit the web site and you can sign up to get the Discover Boating 30 |

Beginner’s Guide to boating, which is an excellent resource, through the mail. The Take Me Fishing campaign, supported by the RBFF (Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation) is another resource you’ll find on the web which is chock-full of good info. And after you peruse the web site for advice, download the RBFF’s free Boat Ramps app onto your Apple or

Android smart-phone. The RBFF app gives you the locations of and directions to over 35,000 boat ramps nationwide. You can search by zip code, city, or current location. When researching specific boats, you can read boating magazine and web reviews, like those found on Fishgame. com. You can also watch video boat reviews, on sites like Boats.com. And there are many owner’s groups which have formed around specific manufacturers. These often have web sites with message boards; many are full of good info about specific makes and models, but they should also be taken with a grain of salt, since anyone can comment on them and inaccurate information regularly surfaces on “open” message boards. The ABA (American Boating Association, www.americanboating.org) is another web site with info that should be of interest to new boaters,

especially in its Safety section. TPWD (Texas Parks and Wildlife) is one of the more helpful state agencies in the country for boating resources. Check out the TPWD website at www.tpwd.state.tx.us. BoatUS (www.boatUS.com) has another web site that’s rich with information, although boaters should also be aware of the many other services this organization has to offer, including a printed magazine, special-interest divisions and publications like BoatUS Trailering and BoatUS Fishing, as well as many club membership benefits. Most folks, however, will look to BoatUS for their insurance and on-the-water towing needs. If reading hard-copy is more your speed, grab a few copies of magazines like Texas Fish & Game, which have regular boating how-to columns and feature articles. And of course, you can always go to the ultimate authority on the water – the United States Coast Guard – for more information. Their web site has more than mere advice, too, with downloadable PDF float plans you can use, a video library, and boater’s handbook. However you choose to do your research and learn more about boating, the important thing is simply that you know enough to stay safe on the water. And with all of the resources freely available to you today, that should present no problem at all. —by Lenny Rudow

Tackle on Board

NBOARD FISHING tackle stowage is a great thing on a fishing boat. It allows you to keep all your goodies and gear close at hand, yet you never have to lug a tackle box around. But, there are some downsides, too. Tackle may be exposed to moisture more than you’d like, and corrosion can turn your hooks dull. Jumping onto other people’s boats means you still need to have a bag prepped, which means buying double gear in many cases. And when all your gear is left aboard and a few weeks pass by between trips, it’s not always easy to remember exactly what you do or do not have aboard. These five tricks, however, will help make onboard tackle stowage work well. Onboard tackle stowage can be a great thing – or, not so much, if you don’t know these tricks. Moisture and corrosion are big problems associated with keeping all your gear aboard, but there are several ways to combat it. You can put a cedar block or a silicon packet into each box, to help sap away the moisture and keep your gear dry. You can also improve ventilation, simply by leaving the door to a tackle station ajar (assuming that won’t allow rainfall to get inside). In extreme cases, it may be necessary to add a vent to an onboard tacklebox or tackle station. To help avoid moisture in the first place, never put a used lure or tackle back into the box until it’s completely dry. If you’re fishing in saltwater, naturally, give all your gear a freshwater rinse before drying it. Put lead weights into the lowest part of the tackle stowage system. If you elevate the lead, over time it will cause the plastic bottoms of tackle trays to deform. And on rough days, bouncing lead may even shatter the plastic. JAN

Always leave one empty tackle tray on the boat. That way, if a buddy invites you aboard his boat you can jump onto your own, and quickly assemble a selection of appropriate tackle to bring. When you return, you can unpack the same box and slide it right back into its spot, empty again, so it’s ready for next time. Insert a piece of cork or foam into the boxes you use for lead-heads and jigs, and stick the hooks into the cork or foam. This way, the heads won’t

bounce against each other and chip the paint, as you run through rough seas. (Note – this works great for all kinds of tackle boxes, not just those that never leave the boat). Use these tricks, and you’ll find that onboard fishing tackle stowage isn’t merely just convenient—it’s also more effective and keeps your tackle and gear in good shape, too.
