Stingray Encounter

Stingrays are amazing creatures that inspire curiosity, awe and sometimes even irrational terror but rarely indifference. The tank is built high so you can get “face to face” with the animals. All the rays in the exhibit have had their defensive barbs removed so they are safe to touch. These barbs grow back in time, so when we return the rays to the wild they can defend themselves again. equipment. Whatever outdoor adventure you seek, we have the gear to get you there.

Connect with Family through Travel, Sport & Lifestyle

Not only does Houston’s Biggest Boat, Sport & Travel Show have more than 16 acres of boats and campers, there are hundreds of exciting pursuits for the whole family. Maybe a hot tub or sauna is what you prefer? Or maybe a golf cart or ATV for some off-road fun? Maybe a new mattress or recliner to rest up after these fun excursions? There’s something here for the whole family from jewelry to fashion, paintings to cookware, toys and more.

Connect with Family on Angling Adventures

a hunting/fishing adventure at one of the many lodges and excursions from Alaska to Costa Rica, schedule a day with a local fishing or hunting guide, stock up on the latest fishing gear, fish finders, powers poles and more. Check out the live fishing demos in the giant 5,000 gallon Bass Tub or learn something new from one of our informative free seminars.

Or Just Have a Fun Day at the Boat Show with the Kids

The 2015 Houston Boat, Sport & Travel Show has fun for the kids, too. From the traditional Fish-o-Rama where kids of all ages can catch live fish right at the show, to the fun of Bubble Runners where kids get to “run” across the water in their own little bubble, your kids are in for a treat.

HETHER YOU’RE AN ANGLER, A hunter, a water sports enthusiast, or just a regular old boat nut, there are plenty of new-for-2015 boats and boating goodies to make this a banner year. In fact, this model year marks something of a watershed. Whichever segment of the industry you look at, there are breakthroughs and developments that deserve the

terms “ground-breaking,” and “game-changing.” You don’t believe it? I don’t blame you one bit. But reserve judgment, until you’ve heard about these developments.

BOAT DESIGN How often does an entirely new class of boat appear on the market?not very. We’ve seen a new genre of center console boats hit the

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT, SPORT & TRAVEL SHOW

The Latest Bling for Boaters BY LENNY RUDOW water this year, coming from multiple buildersthe center console yacht, or CCY. Admittedly, we just made that term up, but it’s dead-on accurate. These new models from the likes of Boston Whaler, Everglades, and Intrepid are still the center console fishing boat we’ve come to know and love. They have 360-degree fishability, bow and stern cockpits, livewells, and rodholders galore. They also have cabins befitting express cruisers, with features such as berths, settees, full galleys, and JAN

enclosed heads. Even more important to anglers, these models also boast a completely new development not seen in any 2014 model year center consolessecond-row helm seating. That means a half-dozen anglers can sit in a comfortable, protected seat aft of the helm, instead of half the crew standing and holding onto pipework while you cruise. These models even maintain center console performance, thanks to racks of triple or quad outboards on their transoms.

Another interesting development in center console boat design is the advent of the forward-facing bow seating, made possible by removable or convertible pop-up backrests. Five years ago they were unheard-of. A couple of years ago they were few and far between. Today

they’re on oodles of boats. Cruisers have something new to look for, too. An influx of European styling and flair has crossed the Atlantic. Along with the attractive styling, many of the cabin boats feature increased window size and overhead sunroofs for

360-degree views and plenty for fresh breezes. In larger models cabin size has been enhanced, too, thanks to the advent of pod drives. No matter what type or size of boat you’re looking at, also expect to see more and more joystick controls. These have

brate, too. Last year the Spark came onto the market, giving people the chance to enjoy personal watercraft at a fraction of the cost of a traditional PWC. This model year hasn’t changed much in form, but it has triggered a price rollback through some other segments of the market. Today, you can actually buy some brand new PWCs for less than the exact same model cost in years past.

ELECTRONICS A few years back, side-scanning sonar hit the market and dazzled us with the exceptional fish-finding ability it gave us. One by one almost all of the major manufacturers added some form of side

ity to existing systems with a black box and/or a transducer. CHIRP multi-spectrum units also came into the mix, first on high-dollar units and then in single-channel, lowcost versions. And then, 360-degree scanning (from Humminbird) and directed “spotlight” scanning (from Lowrance) was introduced. So, what could electronics manufacturers possibly dream up for this year? The answer is all of the above. Now, instead of being add-on features you adapt to your existing MFD via blackbox, these features are built right into many of the new head units. True, to take full advantage of all this technology you have to completely upgrade your system. But it also greatly simplifies installation, lowers overall cost as compared to adding technology in a

become prevalent on all sorts of boats with all types of power systems, from multiple outboard rigs to stern drives to inboards. If you haven’t tried docking via joystick just yet, trust us, it’s a huge improvement over the old methods. PWC fans have something to cele-

view to their systems, usually via a special transducer and an add-on black-box. Then imager-scanners came along, radically boosting detail levels in 300 feet of water, or less. Again, one manufacturer after another added this capabil-

pieces-parts fashion. Also, by shrinking the number of separate electronic units on the boat, the new technology reduces the chances of failure. One other new feature common in marine electronicsmore and more systems are Wifi-capable, and more and more can interface with your phone and/or tablet via apps. You can see radar on your iPad, change fishfinder modes from your phone, and in some cases, even remotely monitor your boat’s systems from afar.

There’s big news from the world of outboards this year, as well. Some new four-stroke engines have slimmed down to the point that they’re as light or nearly as light as their two-stroke competitors. Others have been enhanced to accept digital controls and gauges. But the biggest news among outboard enthusiasts is, without question, the introduction of Evinrude’s second generation G2

The next generation of E-TEC, the G2, is creating some of the hottest news in the world of boating for 2015.

E-TEC two-stroke outboard. We don’t have the time or space to get into the specific technical details of the G2 here. However, you can learn all about it in Texas Fish & Game, and on our web site—including a run-down of our hands-on testing found on the fishgame.com blog. Mercury’s Suffice it to say, New Four-Stroke these engines are like nothing currently on the market. That goes for performance, and appearance, both. Cruisers will be interested to hear about the prevalence of more triple-pod rigs on the express and sport cruiser markets. Pod drives have made huge inroads on the market since their introduction, and many builders are now utilizing them in larger and larger cruisers, by installing triple engine rigs. Even you pontoon boat fans have something to cheer this year. Several 42 |

Yamaha’s VMax SHO

engine manufacturers, including BRP, Mercury, and Yamaha, have been paying more attention to this genre of boat. They have introduced engines with lower gear ratios and/or long shafts designed to account for the turbulent

water a pontoon boat leaves in its wake. Mercury’s Command Thrust gear case, for example, which can swing a prop with additional blade area, can now be had on the FourStroke 90 and FourStroke 115 models. Note also that 2 0 1 5

ly advanced itemslifts that no longer depend on those cranky, troublesome spools and wheels, but instead run on hydraulics; bilge pumps that no longer leave a skim of water. (Instead they pump out virtually every drop); batterypowered folding electric bicycles that stow easily in a boateven coolers that do double-duty as air-conditioners. The bottom line? This is going to

be a great year for boaters. Wander the show, soak up the new technology and boat models, and take in what 2015 has to offer.

Suzuki DF200A

the new 115 is both lighter and more powerful than previous models. Yamaha is also making waves this year, by introducing no less than six new outboards. They’ve greatly expanded the V Max SHO line-up of high-performance engines, with 115, 175, 150, and 250 models. Though the 150 and 250 horsepower engines were previously released, for the first time, they’re available in 25-inch shaft lengths. Also new for 2015 are the F150B (with a redesigned cowl, pan and clutch dog) and the F8 (which now weighs just 88 pounds). What about Suzuki? They’ve got some new offerings, too. The DF200A posts a 69 pound weight loss compared to their old 200-hp V6, and it’ll be available with drive-by-wire Precision Control and a keyless ignition. If smaller engines are what you need, check out the new DF25/30. These models have a 489cc powerhead with battery-less EFI and Suzuki’s Lean Burn system.

S COLD WINTER weather presses down hard, what should you change in your boat’s gear and rigging to prepare for cold-weather

fishing? The first thing to remember is, if it’s already cold, you’re already way behind schedule. When summer draws to a close and a bite comes into the air, boating becomes a different experience. Suddenly that breeze that felt so good and cool a month ago turns chilling; the welcome spray on your face is JAN

BoatShowProgram.indd 45

2 -1 1

BY LENNY RUDOW now an unwelcome shock. On the other hand, fish are in their fall feeding frenzy and the ducks are getting ready to fly. The change of seasons may force a change in your comfort level, but now’s an awesome time to be out on the water—if, that is, you’re prepared for the different conditions.

Thick Skinned

Depending on where you live in Texas, you could be in store for

anything from a mild cool-off to freezing temperatures. Either way, the first and most obvious change you’ll need to make is in what you wear. Most importantly, remember that hypothermia—the number-one killer of people engaged in outdoor activities. And even when the air is relatively warm, it becomes a danger when you get wet. As a result, when fall arrives you should make sure you have foul-weather gear stowed aboard your boat. Even a set of cheap plastic ponchos (one for every passenger onboard) can become invaluable when spray starts flying or rain

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT, SPORT & TRAVEL SHOW

2 0 1 5

| 45

12/10/14 5:05 PM

starts pouring down. Stow a set of these ponchos, which fold down to the size of a deck of cards and can be crammed into a glove or ammo box, somewhere aboard your boat. Those in tougher climates, obviously, should plan on wearing tougher gear. Foul weather gear should have adjustable cuffs to seal out the water, welded seams (stitched seams almost always leak), and storm flaps that cover the zippers. If you live in an area with big temperature swings, where it may be in the 40’s at daybreak but go into the 70’s mid-day, stay away from PVC or polyurethane foul-weather gear. It may keep the water out but it doesn’t breathe and when the sun rises you’ll start sweating. Breathable fabrics, like Gore-Tex or microporous and coated hydrophilics, will allow some air to flow while keeping the spray at bay, and you’ll stay a lot more comfortable. One often overlooked option is float-coats. These jackets have built-in floatation so you’re always wearing a life jacket when you have one on. Added bonus: the foam is an excellent insulator, and float-coats are every bit as warm as the best winter jackets. And don’t forget about the importance of hats, gloves, and socks.

Mechanical Mayhem

Those falling temperatures don’t just affect you, they affect the way your boat runs, too. The good news: your boat may run a bit faster, since the air gets denser as it cools and more gets packed into the cylinders. Unfortunately, changing temperatures can also affect the elasticity of rubber. Where this can impact your boat is in the propeller, specifically in the hub. A rapid drop in water temperature can cause prop hubs to lose their grip, and the prop may “spin out” on the hub. You’ll usually get a warning, in the form of a drop in speed while RPM rises. If you have a spare prop and a prop puller, this is the time to keep them onboard. And if you don’t, and you notice a drop in the usual speeds your boat runs at in any specific RPM range, replace the prop 46 |

J AN

BoatShowProgram.indd 46

2 -1 1

(or have it re-hubbed) before the temperature drops any more. Dropping temperatures can also take a toll on your battery, and if yours is old or abused, the first cold morning is usually when it fails. This is a good time to pull out the charger and make sure it’s topped-off. If the battery shows any sign of weakness and/or the engine cranks slowly, consider replacing that battery entirely. Outboard owners who live in an area where freezing can occur should always use fall as a major land-mark in their yearly maintenance schedule. This is when you should change your lower-unit oil, and eyeball the old oil for water contamination. If the temperature falls below freezing and there’s water in your lower unit, the results can be catastrophic. Naturally, the same is true of any system on your boat that holds water. Dump any freshwater tanks, run your raw water washdown and livewell pumps until they gurgle dry after every trip, and if you’re in an area that regularly sees hard freezes, run some anti-freeze through those systems. Finally, always remember to leave your outboard fully tilted down when you park it on the trailer, or a lift. If you leave it tilted up water can sit in the lower unit, and again, freeze damage is a possibility. There’s no need to run anti-freeze through an outboard since they drain completely when tilted down, but if you leave it up trouble is in store. If you store your boat in the water, even though you usually tilt it up at the end of the day during the summer, again, leave it down now that fall has hit. Barnacle or weed growth slows or stops at this time of year in areas where cool temperatures predominate, and won’t be a problem.

Chilling Out

Along with yourself and your boat’s mechanical systems, there are a number of other items that can be affected by the cold. Electronics, for example. Most of the season, we’d say it’s best to leave your GPS/Chartplotters and fishfinders on their mount at the helm because

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT, SPORT & TRAVEL SHOW

taking them on and off every trip can stress the plugs and connectors. But at this time of year, warm days followed by cool nights can lead to condensation followed by freezing. Obviously, this isn’t great for your electronics. WARNING: BE VERY GENTLE WITH plastic plug-ends in cold temps, because the plastic can become brittle and break, especially if you wiggle the plug at an awkward angle. Marine canvass will also be affected by the cooling air. Isinglass is particularly susceptible to damage in the cold, if you fold it. Instead, always roll up Isinglass and when you stow it, don’t lie anything heavy on top of the roll. And as the temperature swings and materials shrink and expand, it can get tough to zip the Isinglass, canvas Bimini tops, and curtains into place. Make the job easier by lubricating the zippers; running a wax candle over them is a quick and easy way to get it done. Another item affected by cold temps is the vinyl on your boat’s seats and coaming bolsters. It can become rather brittle, and more susceptible to rips and tears. To prevent this from happening, take the time now to treat marine vinyls with a cleaner/protectant, like Armor All. Even your lines can become brittle and tough to work with at this time of year. This is partially a result of temperature, and partially the result of a long summer of use. So make it part of your fall maintenance schedule to treat mooring and anchor lines to keep them supple and flexible. An hour-long soaking in a bucket of water with a cup of fabric softener will do the trick. Summer may be fleeting, but the chill in the air brings a number of cool weather outdoor activities that we sportsmen love. So treat your boat right and dress for the weather—you’ll be rewarded with the days of fall fishing and waterfowl hunting that make this time of year great.

So: You Need to Buy a Trailer...

T IS A FACT OF LIFE THAT your trailer is as important as your boat. The right trailer can make your sporting life a treat or pure torture. A knowledgeable and reliable supplier is critical to your choice, but in terms of picking the right trailer and for the maintenance that will make your boating experience a delight. Be sure you choose a company that understands your needs. Here are some of the issues that you will face:

BY LINDA WATER NELSON • You have two primary choices when it comes to materials – galvanized steel and aluminum. Each has pros and cons. Steel will rust over time, and is sometimes less expensive than aluminum. A rule of thumb: fresh water boating is a good match for a steel trailer. Saltwater encourages the use of an aluminum trailer for obvious reasons. • Bunks or rollers. Rollers don’t

48 |

J AN

BoatShowProgram.indd 48

2 -1 1

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT, SPORT & TRAVEL SHOW

cradle the boat hull the way that bunks do and won’t give the weight distribution advantage that bunks do. Ask your trailer supplier which is best for you. • Torsion bar or leaf spring suspension. Again, a knowledgeable supplier is your best friend when making a choice. They will understand your boat, your specific needs and the right option for your kind of boating. • What kind of hardware is used for your trailer. Even if you choose not rusting aluminum for your trailer, remember that the hardware that connect the individual elements can rust if 2 0 1 5

12/8/14 8:26 PM

they are not stainless steel or a comparable material. • While surge, electro-hydraulic and disc brakes are available, look at disc brakes if you do a lot of saltwater boating or fishing. They have fewer places to get clogged with salt that can degrade their quality. Electric brakes are relatively new to the boat trailer market, but your trailer supplier can guide you to your best option.

What is the Right Hitch for You?

T

HE BOAT YOU TOW and the trailer that you select – along with gross vehicle weight -- will, in most cases, dictate the type of hitch that you need, and your supplier will be the best source for information about hitches. It is always best, however, to come in as an educated customer so here is some useful information: • The most common hitches are available in five classes that are weightmatched to the combined total weight of the boat and trailer. You will find the rating for the hitch somewhere on it. • Class I hitches are rated for up to 2,000 lbs. and 200 pounds tongue weight. They are the light duty

JAN

BoatShowProgram.indd 49

only and can be ordered with fixed ball mounts or receivers to coordinate with a 1-1/2” removable square drawbar or ball mount. • Class II hitches are often enough for small boats and personal watercraft. They are rated for up to 3,500 lbs. gross total weight and 300-lbs. tongue weight and attach to the vehicle frame. (Unibody vehicles may require extra support.) • Class III takes the rated gross total weight to 6,000 lbs. and it also bolts to the frame of the vehicle. It takes a 2” square drawbar and can be used with a weight distributing system (ask your dealer to explain) which can boost the rating to 10,000 lbs. total weight of boat and trailer.

As to maintenance, it is important to have your trailer serviced by a reputable dealer every year, and more often if necessary. Just as your tow vehicle needs to be lubed and the lights, tires and other features kept in great working order, so does your trailer. Don’t skimp or wait for a problem – it is much worse handling a crisis when you are on location than it is to pre-service your trailer.

 • Classes IV and V are available for full-size trucks, SUVs and some vans. With weight distribution systems they can accommodate up to 14,000 lbs. total weight and 1,400 lbs. tongue weight, and 17,000 lbs. and 1,700 lbs. tongue weight respectively. • Make sure that the tow ball rating matches the connection to the trailer so you can close the coupler latch and make certain that the trailer and its precious cargo will not disengage when you are driving. Your dealer will make sure that the proper tow ball and hitch are the right ones for your load.

As with anything related to towing a boat, your dealer is your best resource for information. Never guess at anything or you may find yourself on the side of the road.

F

OUR YEARS AGO, I DEVELoped a system for targeting big fish of any kind. It is called F.L.E.X. Fishing® and it involves a scientific, systematic approach to angling. F.L.E.X. stands for Focus, Learn, Eliminate, Experience and it is these principles that drive my fishing and have made a major difference in success especially for big fish since 2011. In addition to a seminar at the boat show on Saturday, January 3 at 2:00 p.m., I will be blogging about this system and hold some F.L.E.X. clinics online at www.fishgame.com in 2015. The beauty of this system is that it applies to both fresh and saltwater species. My seminar at the show will be on speckled trout. Here, I would like to talk about a more challenging freshwater target: Crappie.

50 |

J AN

BoatShowProgram.indd 50

2 -1 1

by chester moore The following are notes from my F.L.E.X. Fishing online crappie series we will debut at fishgame.com in February. It shows you the deep level we are going to for the pursuit of big slabs and other fish with this system we will be giving you in 2015 by giving you unparalleled access to not only this system but information most have never seen on Texas’ top game fish.

Diet/Metabolism

• A Little-known fact is that mature crappies eat their own young. The bigger the crappie, the bigger the young they can consume. Consider crappiepatterned tube jigs, etc. when seeking monster crappies.

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT, SPORT & TRAVEL SHOW

• The metabolism of crappie slows dramatically in winter and in super hot periods of summer in shallow water bodies and those with little current flow (due to low dissolved oxygen). It has an especially large effect on white crappies. When seeking trophy-sized slabs during these periods remember the fish will not actively chase your bait/lure. Use a slow, subtle presentation to trick big, wary fish into biting. • Young bluegills are a favorite prey item of larger crappies. These tiny perch can be caught in traps and could present a way to get bigger fish to score when they seem to turn their nose up to shiners. • Anglers seeking really a big crappie should avoid baiting brush piles. Baiting draws in catfish, stripers and other predatory species that not only can eat the crappies themselves but also outcompete them for food. When these 2 0 1 5

12/8/14 8:26 PM

A Fishing System for Catching Big Fish of ANY Species types of predators are lurking, large crappies will stay in the cover and not leave. The cover itself is the main drawing card for larger crappies.

Ecology

• A study conducted in Ohio showed that crappie activity increased at dusk, peaked at night and declined at dawn and remained low throughout the day. Peak movements occurred when measurable light intensity approached zero. • Black crappie are fairly saltwater tolerant and can do well in brackish marshes and rivers. Since these areas receive very little fishing pressure and are rich in forage items, they can yield trophy fish. Consider targeting the brackish zones of well-known crappie producing systems to find big, unpressured fish. • Low dissolved oxygen levels have JAN

BoatShowProgram.indd 51

2 -1 1

a dramatic effect on crappies, especially blacks. It can kill them before it harms many other species. In summer, seek areas with depth or high water flow as the mature crappies are the first to seek a change in location due to water quality issues. • Anglers seeking trophy white crappies should focus on moderately turbid water bodies. In clearer water, black crappies tend to dominate whereas white crappies thrive in environments that are more turbid. Avoid super murky areas as studies have shown whites can tolerate them, but tend to avoid them.

Senses

• Studies have shown the lower the water temperature the better a crappie’s vision gets. This is because the cool water helps the flounder’s eye cells function better. In cool, clear water, you will have to use stealthy techniques to consistently bag big, wary crappie. • Crappie eyes are designed to look up which is why it is so important to get bait or lure right in the strike zone. If you go too deep, they will not see it.

X-Factors

• Minnesota researchers found most of the biggest crappies on their study lakes were first generation white/ black crappie hybrids although they all appeared to look like black crappies. They said it is not unusual for first generation hybrids to grow to large proportions. Consider lakes with healthy populations of both crappie species when seeking large blacks. Your trophy fish, however, could actually be a hybrid. • Researchers at the world’s largest fishing tackle company Pure Fishing have found the crappie to be the “smartest” of the popular freshwater species in North America. They respond quickly to fishing pressure, line visibility and color even more so than bass as they mature. • I found by hand feeding crappies while diving that the very largest specimens will blow a hard jet of water at a prey item before striking. When you get a hard thump on a shiner, wait a couple of seconds to set the hook or

you could be setting it on nothing. • The term “papermouth” is often used for crappie but in reality that is only descriptive of white crappies. Black crappies have fairly hard mouths. Be extremely careful to always use a net to land a trophy crappie especially whites. • Crappies literally inhale baitfish. Many times anglers using jigs put on tiny hooks so the fish swallow it. Unfortunately, they tend to miss many fish, especially big ones, which are wary about anything that does not seem safe to them. By using larger jigs and jigheads, they have a better chance of getting a hook in the roof of the crappie’s mouth when it exhales.

Confidence in F.L.E.X.

I will never recommend fishing so you can watch the sun rise over the water or any other of a dozen clichés common in the outdoor media. Fishing is about catching fish. The other stuff is wonderful, but there are less expensive and time consuming ways to see and experience those. There goes that word again “experience”. It is crucial in this process and allows one dream to form another and the cycle to continue. Never think you have climbed all of the mountains because there is always another waiting on the horizon. Just like there is a monster crappie waiting for me on a deep drop-off at Toledo Bend. I think I will go practice what I preach and show that fish what F.L.E.X. is all about. Am I that confident? Yes. And if you follow these principles that we will unleash in 2015 you should be too. Now, go out there and catch that fish of your dreams.

HERE IS NOTHING quite like skimming along the water’s surface in a sporty personal watercraft designed for just that purpose. Whether you plan to ride alone or with a passenger or two, there are models designed for comfort and performance that will satisfy your every need. There are things to consider as you narrow down the list, and – as with boats, RVs and other recreational products – your dealer can be the best source of information. After deciding how many people the vehicle will handle, the first consideration is whether you are going to purchase new or pre-owned. Most dealers carry both, and since they will be servicing the craft they can give you some history of the products on their lot. If you are planning to purchase used from a private party, schedule a pre-sale check up with the dealer you plan to use for maintenance and make sure that the craft is in good shape. If not, pass on the pur-

BY LINDA WATER NELSON chase and don’t look back. Whether you are buying new or used, there are a number of issues to tackle before making your choice: • Just like your car or truck, a personal watercraft has an engine at its heart. Depending upon your needs, check out fuel capacity, power and other performance factors and match them to your specific needs. These could include towing tubers and wakeboarders, transportation to less-accessible places or flat out having fun. Your dealer can give you all the pertinent info. • Never consider a watercraft without testing the seating for comfort and control positions. Yes, there are fit issues and what is just right for you will differ from person to person. If you are not comfortable sitting on the seat on dry land, imagine how uncomfortable

you will be spending time on the water. • Try out the handlebar positions to make sure that there is a comfortable one for you. You need to be able to control the watercraft in a range of conditions. Try standing up and sitting down since you will be doing both and don’t compromise on this or you could be compromising on safety. • Think about storage and amenities. This will tie in to how you plan to use your vehicle. If it is going to be the pack animal for taking things to your cabin or beach, buy accordingly. • Consider your personal style. As personal watercraft have gained in popularity, manufacturers have grown to offer a range of styles. Think of motorcycles – whether you want a flashy one or something more staid, they are out there for your picking. • Plan annual maintenance into your budget. Whether you do it purely for safety or maximized performance, your servicing dealer is your partner in this process. Choose him as wisely as you do your watercraft.

BOATING SAFETY

Fair- and Not So Fair-Weather Boating

W

IND AND RAIN ARE the bane of boaters, trapping us on shore when we’d much rather be out there on the water. When it comes to weather, of course, discretion is the better part of valor— decide to go out when there are 30 knot gusts and lightning strikes, and you will not be a happy camper. That said, if you cancel your day of fishing every time your friendly local schizophrenic weatherman claims there’s a risk, you may well never leave the dock. Fortunately, you have gobs of options when it comes to making an educated decision about the weather. In fact, in the past couple of years those options have rapidly multiplied, thanks to the internet, apps, and new inventions. Here are some of the latest and greatest ways to figure out what’s in store.

Webucation

Getting on the web is a whole new experience these days, weather-wise. Sure, you still have those old stand-bys, like weatherchannel.com, weatherunderground.com, and your local news. But some newer sites that focus purely on marine forecasting have taken it a step farther. Buoyweather.com, for instance, includes not just forecasts but also realtime weather buoy data, wave charts, sea temperature and chlorophyll charts, and tide data. And since the forecasting is based around a chart (choose Texas from the Gulf States list, put the cursor over your specific area, and click), it’s incredibly easy to use. Another good one is Fishweather.com. In fact, I’ve become so accustomed to using this site that I almost never leave the dock JAN

without checking it first. Fishweather overlays wind forecasts over a detailed NOAA chart, allowing you to choose the exact location and see all the wind, wave, and sea condition data. What’s even better is the ability to break down the forecasts into three hour increments. For those of us who are sick and tired of NOAA’s overly-broad and unspecific marine forecasts, Fishweather is a handsdown winner. Another nice thing about using the web for your weather is that you can continue checking it throughout the day, if you have a smart phone. Added bonus: you can set your phone to give you alerts, in case of deteriorating weather. Which leads us to

Weather Apps

Since that smart phone is in your pocket, why not take full advantage of it? You can choose from countless weather apps these days, although you should recognize that some are a lot better than others. A handful of the most popular include Weatherbug, Weather Underground, The Weather Channel, Bluefin, and Lightning Finder. All have their own strengths and weaknesses. Here are some key things to look for

when you choose which weather app is best for you. Obviously, you’ll want to make sure it covers the areas where you regularly go fishing and boating. Remember, some apps only cover specific regions for free, and you’ll have to pay extra to get complete coverage. Another important item is the availability of current Doppler radar images. Many apps (or free versions of apps which can be upgraded for a fee) only provide text forecasts. These are usually based on those same NOAA predictions (sometimes they appear verbatim), which really doesn’t help much. On the other hand, real-time animated Doppler lets you see storms to track their direction and speed of travel. This is a great help in deciding when you need to head back to the dock. Graphic lightning displays are another great feature to look for. Lightning is one of those things we boaters really want to avoid. So, seeing when and where strikes are occurring can help you make much more intelligent go/no-go decisions. Some apps also include wind speed data, either in an updated or forecasted form. Generally speaking, forecasts don’t do you much good unless you’re on the water for an extended period of time. But real-time wind updates are great for helping you identify trends, the approach of fronts, or changes in the current conditions.

Other Tools

Now, let’s say you don’t have a smart phone. Or more likely, you don’t get service in some of the areas you go boating. There are still some weather tools you can utilize. The first and best is satellite Continued on Pg. 54 u

weather, such as Sirius/XM satellite. In most cases it can interface with your chartplotter/GPS, and put those weather maps and forecasts right up on the helm. This is a more expensive option than most others. A receiver costs between $100 and $500 depending on brand, and you’ll also have to pay a monthly access fee which ranges from about $10 to $50/month (depending on what level of service you choose). But that expense gets you everything those apps and web sites offer, and then some. Finally, for the lightning-averse among us, you can also get a dedicated lightning detector. These don’t cost much ($50 to $100) and are simple to use. Just turn them on, and a series of blinking lights and/or tones will alert you to lightning strikes within range (which varies from unit to unit but covers at least 50 miles) as they take place. It also shows how far away they are. Aside from all of these goodies and gadgets (technology be damned) you still have those old weather rules that mariners have lived by for centuries. So, no matter what gear and goodies you may or may not have on board, always remember: —Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. —Red sky in morning, sailors take warning. —When grass is dry at morning light, look for rain before the night. —Sound traveling far and wide, a stormy day it does betide. —When wind blows from west, fish bite the best; when it blows from east, fish bite the least. —When clouds look like rocks and towers, you should expect frequent showers. —Seagulls, seagulls, sitting on sand, it’s never good weather when you’re on land.

Resources for Boaters

B

OATING IS AN ACTIVity that requires a certain amount of knowhow, which most of us pick up through experience. But, how’s someone who’s new to boating supposed to learn their port from their starboard? A good starting point is the boating safety class all new boaters are required to take. Anyone born after 1993 must take this course before they operate a powerboat in the state of Texas, and anyone who’s not already very experienced on the water, regardless of their age, will be well-served by taking it. (Just go to www. boat-ed.com). Of course, there’s plenty to learn beyond taking the minimum required safety course. Fortunately, in this day and age there are also plenty of organizations and publications out there which are ready and willing to lend a hand. One of the most helpful you’ll find is Discover Boating, a public awareness campaign managed by the NMMA (National Marine Manufacturer’s Association). Go to www.discoverboating.org, and you can get a free starter CD with gobs of information on boats and boating. You can also read up on different types of boats, what you need to know about owning and operating them, and financing and insuring boats—there’s even an online “spousal conversion kit” that might come in handy if your better half is still on the fence. You prefer reading things the old-fashioned way, on paper? Not a problem; visit the web site and you can sign up to get the Discover Boating Beginner’s

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT, SPORT & TRAVEL SHOW

Guide to boating, which is an excellent resource, through the mail. The Take Me Fishing campaign, supported by the RBFF (Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation) is another resource you’ll find on the web which is chock-full of good info. And after you peruse the web site for advice, download the RBFF’s free Boat Ramps app onto your Apple or Android smartphone. It gives you the locations of and directions to over 35,000 boat ramps nationwide. You can search by zip code, city, or current location. When researching specific boats, you can read boating magazine and web reviews, like those found on Fishgame. com. You can also watch video boat reviews, on sites like

Boats.com. And there are many owner’s groups which have formed around specific manufacturers. These often have web sites with message boards; many are full of good info about specific makes and models, but they should also be taken with a grain of salt, since anyone can comment on them and inaccurate information regularly surfaces on “open” message boards. The ABA (American Boating Association, www.americanboating.org) is another web site with info that should be of interest to new boaters, especially

BY LENNY RUDOW in its Safety section. The same is true of many state agencies including TPWD (Texas Parks and Wildlife, at http:// www.tpwd.state.tx.us/). BoatUS (www. boatUS.com) has another web site that’s rich with information, although boaters should also be aware of the many other services this organization has to offer, including a printed magazine, specialinterest divisions and publications like BoatUS Trailering and BoatUS Fishing, as well as many club membership benefits. Most folks, however, will look to BoatUS for their insurance and on-thewater towing needs.

If reading hard-copy is more your speed, grab a few copies of magazines like Texas Fish & Game, which have regular boating how-to columns and feature articles. And of course, you can always go to the ultimate authority on the water – the United States Coast Guard – for more information. Their web site has more than mere advice, too, with downloadable PDF float plans you can use, a video library, and boater’s handbook. However you choose to do your research and learn more about boating, the important thing is simply that you know enough to stay safe on the water. And with all of the resources freely available to you today, that should present no problem at all.
