Remember, many manufacturers and Boat Dealers are offering special PreSeason Savings and Boat Show Specials in a rare indoor environment where you can see, touch and compare before you buy.

Joy Ride in an RV

This 10-day show features a great selection of campers, travel trailers and accessories for a perfect family getaway. Owning a camper gives you the freedom to travel and explore any time of the year. Who wants to stay in a strange hotel when you can travel in the comfort of your own space and at your own pace? Sleep in—There’s no check out time!

More than a Boat Show

Already own a boat or RV? The 2017 Houston International Boat, Sport & Travel Show is the perfect place to outfit your ride with a new sound system, GPS system, fishing or wakeboard tower. Or you can gear up with hottest new wakeboards, tubes and towing equipment. Whatever outdoor adventure you seek, we have the gear to

get you there. Not only does Houston’s Biggest Boat, Sport & Travel Show have more than 16 acres of boats and campers, there are hundreds of exciting pursuits for the whole family. Maybe a hot tub or sauna is what you prefer? Or maybe a golf cart or ATV for some off-road fun? Maybe a new mattress or recliner to rest up after these fun excursions? There’s something here for the whole family from jewelry to fashion, paintings to cookware, toys and more.

Let Us Be Your Guide

Head over to our Gear, Guides & Tackle Territory where you can book a hunting/fishing adventure at one of the many lodges and excursions from Texas to Alaska, schedule a day with a local fishing or hunting guide, stock up on the latest fishing gear, fish finders, powers poles and more.

Bass Tub

Get up-close views of a big bass striking a lure, as professional angler Chuck Devereaux demonstrates a variety of techniques for casting and retrieval. Visitors to this year’s show will marvel at the giant 5,000-gallon Bass Tub aquarium, which offers views from both sides and stands nine feet tall. A Bass Tub is a unique aquarium, over 40 feet long, which rolls down the highway as a gooseneck trailer and is transformed into a natural habitat for thirty to forty fish of various species. To simulate the conditions normally found in nature, the tank comes fully stocked with rocks, stumps and dozens of live fish. Using

live fish during our demonstrations offers you the chance to see the fish and lure presentation in action. This is a great educational experience for the newbie and the veteran. Throughout the ten days of the show, fishing fanatics will find Devereaux perched on top of the massive tank as he demonstrates the proper use of fishing lures and offers other helpful suggestions. Stop by and see how your favorite fish reacts to Devereaux’s techniques and get a first-hand look at how lures operate in the water. The goal of the BASS TUB is to entertain by demonstrating fishing techniques. We want spectators to get excited about fishing! We share fishing information from a seasoned professional for individuals who are experienced anglers as well those amateurs who want to learn. This information teaches you the basics and professional tricks of the trade for effective fishing! Chuck also likes to hang around and answer questions.

Fish-O-Rama Whether you are young or just young at heart, you won’t want to miss the chance to experience a Boat Show tradition at Fish-O-Rama. Our rainbow trout (native to the rivers and lakes of North America) tank is fully stocked with this hard-fighting and tasty fish. Fish-O-Rama is a great opportunity to introduce kids to the challenge of fishing and once you catch the “big one” anglers can decide to take their catch home with them or just take home the story of the one that got away at the Houston Boat Show. So come by, grab one of the already baited fishing poles, and get ready to hook your own prize rainbow trout. Personnel are on hand to help with your catch. Anglers can keep or release their fish, and staff will even bag it for you to take home. Plan on hanging around the show a little longer? No problem; they can even keep your catch on ice until you are ready to reel it in

Fish-O-Rama

for the day. Don’t miss your chance to hook ‘The Big Catch’ at the 2017 Houston Boat Show.

pod and sore high into the air with the help of massive bungee ropes! This 4-pod bungee trampoline is sure to thrill. Fun for all ages, the 4-pod bungee trampoline use a continuous air flow system to inflate pods that function as mini moonwalks which in-turn allows the jumpers to reach heights over 25 feet. INFLATABLE SLIDE: Get ready to rocket down a massive 24-foot inflatable slide. The fun never ends as kids race down the 2 lane inflatable slide.

Build-A-Boat

Designed with safety in mind, the 24’ giant slide has a no-jump top, to force riders to slide down properly, keeping them secure. For the kid who loves thrill rides, double the lanes means Bumper Boats

double the fun on this super fun and fast slide. BUMPER BOATS: Add a splash of excitement as you bump your way across the water in your own bumper boat. Drivers climb aboard these electric boats and begin splashing and colliding with the other boaters, having a blast! Laughs and giggles can always be heard from this classic attraction. Our bumper boats are made for persons up to 75 lbs. These easily maneuvered bumper boats are extremely stable and powered by a 12-volt motor. Our bumper boats run in a 23’ X26’ inflatable pool with 12-14 inches of water. HANDS-ON FUN: The Boat Show offers hands on activities for kids! Children of all ages are invited on Saturdays and Sundays to help build an 8-foot wooden dinghy-style boat, help rebuild a 1955 Evinrude 5½ hp classic outboard motor and/or paint in color on our white enamel 8’ pram. The Southwest Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society will conduct supervised boat-building sessions on both Saturdays, Jan. 7th and Jan. 14th and both Sundays, Jan. 8th and Jan. 15th. This event is open free of charge to all children who wish to participate. The boat is an 8-foot pram-style dinghy. All the wood pieces will have already been cut. Assembly is by clamps, glue and screws driven by battery-powered drills. During the show each participating child will be issued a ticket to hold and we will conduct a drawing at the end of the last session to select the winner who gets to keep the finished boat! Children can also help rebuild a 1955 Evinrude 5½ hp classic outboard motor! This will be a real nuts and bolts, hands-on experience on how all the individual parts fit together to make up a real operating engine. We will also issue tickets to participating “wrench-bending” kids for a separate drawing at the end of the show for a 3hp antique motor to take home and rework on their own. (Check back for specific hours.)

New Year, New Season for Boating BY LENNY RUDOW

T

HIS IS THE BEST TIME OF THE YEAR to see boats, boats and more boats. As 2016 becomes history, so do the 2016 model year boats. And if you’re in the market for a new boat, 2017 holds some great surprises and great potential. New models, new technology, and new designs all come into play, and this year’s boat show season will provide you with the opportunity to get your

28 |

first look at all the possibilities. You don’t, of course, want to walk into these shows completely unawares. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to Boats Shows for 2017—read on, and you’ll have the inside scoop before you ever start shopping.

New Boat Trends Last year we told you about the migration towards lower-cost boat-motor-trailer packages which were

designed to be affordable for just about any hardworking American. This trend continues and expands for 2017. Look at the new line-ups from Carolina Skiff, Mako Boats, Robalo, Tracker Marine, and Xpress, for example, and you’ll see a number of $25,000-and-under boat/motor/trailer packages for brand new models in the 16’ to 18’ range. In other segments of the industry, technology is marching on. Hull designs in particular are growing ever more complex and advanced. Blue Wave’s latest debut, the JAN

2017-BoatShowProgram.indd 29

6 -1 5

RS1, which incorporates a step in the bottom to boost efficiency and speed, is a perfect example. Or consider the latest offering from Nautic Star, the 227 XTS, which has planing pods and an air-assist chine to boost acceleration and handling. Pathfinder provides yet another example with their 2500 Hybrid, a boat with a twin-stepped hull that can cruise in the mid 40’s and pushes 60 MPH at top-end. Yes, it’s true that hulls like these require a lot of R & D and as a result, they don’t always come cheap. But the performance, handling, and maneuverability they net is light-years ahead of the hulls designed a few years back.

The trend toward affordable boating continues with models from Carolina Skiff, Xpress, Mako and others, featuring $25,000-and-under complete packages.

Boat construction has also benefited from new tech. While vacuum-assisted fiberglass layup used to be unusual, today it’s quite common. That means fiberglass parts have the ideal resinto-glass ratio, making them as light as possible while maintaining full strength. Other advancements that are becoming commonplace include the use of Kevlar reinforcing, anti-microbial multi-

density foam in seating, Deutsch-style waterproof electrical connections, highdensity foam deck and swim platform padding, “Soft Touch” UV-resistant vinyls, and digital switching systems. Yes, you’re right—all of these advancements do again add cost to the price of a boat. And some of today’s boats seem to carry rather eye-popping price tags. But these same things also increase the value

of what you’re buying, and they make today’s boats stronger, lighter, safer, more comfortable, and more fun to run. Despite all of these advancements, the most revolutionary changes you’ll find on the latest crop of boats has to do with—no surprise here—the modern electronics you find at the helm. All of the major marine electronics manufacturers have been developing MFDs and combi-

nation chartplotter/fishfinders that are evolving towards becoming the “brain” of your boat. These new electronics systems have the ability to control multiple systems ranging from flipping on the lights and livewell, to adjusting the autopilot. Most feature touch-enabled interfaces that mimic those of your smart phone. But perhaps more importantly, many now have built-in WiFi that allows the different components of your boat to communicate with each other and in some cases, with the outside world. You no longer necessarily need a cable to connect your radar dome to your helm; you can operate your chartplotter, fishfinder, or switching system from a cell phone app; charting updates (including those created with the pings from your own fishfinder and chartplotter) can be up- or down-loaded automatically; and in some cases you can even remotely turn on or off things like lights, pumps, or even air conditioning systems before you even leave your house in the morning. If technology represents the biggest advancements in today’s highly complex boats, kayaks and their inherent simplicity represent the opposite end of the spectrum. Yet Kayak anglers will also discover widely expanded options when they visit the boat shows this year. The big news for 2017 from Hobie, the iconic builder of fishing kayaks like the Pro Angler and Outback, is the introduction of reverse to the Mirage Drive (now called Mirage Drive 180). And kayak anglers who enjoy waterfowl hunting have a new option, too, with the introduction of Hobie’s Camo Series. You’ll also find new fishing kayak offerings from the likes of Feelfree, Native Watercraft, Ocean Kayak, Old Town, and Wilderness Systems. Although most of us are most interested in boats used strictly for fishing, hunting, and the like, watersports lovers are also going to find a shocking array of new options on the market. The introduction of Volvo Penta’s Forward Drive, which places a forward-facing pod-like drive unit on a stern drive, has made it possible to turn stern-drive bowriders and runabouts into true wake surfing boats. Another startling new option JAN

2017-BoatShowProgram.indd 31

6 -1 5

Iconic kayak builder Hobie is introducing reverse in its Mirage Drive at this year’s show.

for those who enjoy watersports is the introduction of jet-powered runabouts that are designed to do double-duty as fishing machines. Yamaha broke new ground last year with the 190 FSH, which is a version of their 19’ jet boat with a deck laid out for fishing. Now Scarab has joined in the action, with their 195 Open Fish. Both of these options have all the jet boat advantages that watersports lovers look for, yet since their topsides are designed for fishing, they represent a new and very attractive option for angling families that have kids who also enjoy watersports.

Progress in Power On the outboard front, 2017 ushers in many changes. You’ll find that the newest outboards not only have incredible reliability, they also boast advancements in efficiency and ease of operation. BRP – Evinrude shook up the outboard world when they rolled out their 3.4 liter V-6 G2 two-stroke engines in the 200 to 300 HP range, and this year, they’re expanding that range with a new 2.7 liter version that’s available

12/13/16 5:46 PM

in 150, 150 HO, 175, and 200 HP models. These new engines utilize the same G2 gear-case and mid-section as their larger siblings, including the integrated hydraulic helix steering and trim systems. The engine’s systems are digital but the 150 can be set up with cable controls for re-power situations. Evinrude is claiming the new engines get the same 15-percent fuel economy savings the larger G2’s attained, and from what we’ve seen so far, this seems accurate. HONDA – Honda’s “big” news for 2017 is very, very small—at least as far as horsepower goes. They’ve rolled out all-new 4, 5, and 6 HP 127cc singlecylinder portables. When we ran them we discovered a 0.4 gallon internal fuel tank that’s good for 40 minutes of full-throttle running time, easy starting thanks to an automatic decompression system, and very low vibrations in the tiller handle because vibration mounts isolate it from the powerhead. MERCURY – The latest from Mercury is the VesselView Mobile app, now available for iOS and Android. Before you shrug your shoulders and think “oh no, not another useless app,” consider that when linked (via

Bluetooth) to a VesselView Mobile Module (which plugs into your engine) you’ll be able to tap into SmartCraft and read everything from engine fault codes to oil pressure. Essentially, it eliminates the need for a computerbased interface, allowing you to see everything that in the past only service techs were able to access. SUZUKI – Suzuki has migrated some important features down into its line, with the DF150AP and DF175AP. Suzuki Precision Control (drive-bywire throttle and shift) and Selective Rotation (a gear-case that can be programmed to spin in either direction) is now available on these lower-horsepower outboards. During 2016 Suzuki also rolled out a pair of new portables, the DF4A and DF6A. TOHATSU – We haven’t heard anything new for 2017 from this manufacturer, but remember that in the past two years they expanded their range and now have offerings ranging from 2.5 HP all the way up to 250 HP. Midrange models were also redesigned for 2015, and new 4, 5, and 6 HP models were introduced last year. YAMAHA – The first V-8 monster

outboard, the 5.3-liter F350, has gone through so many changes that it’s now been re-named the F350C. Gearcase passages have been redesigned to improve lubrication to the gears and bearings, improved metal treatments have enhanced corrosion resistance, a new ECU monitors time of use in specific RPM bands, and 41 pounds of weight have been shaved off the original version. The 115 SHO has also undergone some improvements, including redesigned camshafts and a re-mapped ECU that takes maximum RPM from 6000 to 6300.

Boat Show Tips:

To make the most of your time at the boat show, you need to learn as much as possible—then you’ll be able to make the very best pick when it comes time to sign on the dotted line. Here are a few tips to help ensure you succeed. 1. TAKE PICTURES — lots of pictures—while you’re at the show. Whenever possible, also snap off a shot of the displayed specifications sheet and sticker price. This will help you keep different models, pricing, and details sorted when you go back through your boat show materials. 2. BEFORE YOU MAKE any decisions about the value of different boats, be sure you’re comparing apples to apples. One manufacturer may call item “A” a standard feature that’s included in the price, while another calls it a cost-adding optional feature. By the time you get all the features you want this can make a huge difference in the final cost of any particular boat, and if you don’t figure out the “real” cost ahead of time, it’s easy to be misled. 3. ALTHOUGH we believe you’re best-served by thoroughly researching all options before you make any final decisions, remember that the dealers are at the show with one thing in mind: selling boats. If you’re willing and able to sign a contract at the show, you may be able to bargain for an unusually good deal.

Towing Tactics

ANY PEOPLE ARE attracted to the convenience and versatility of trailer-boating. With a boat in tow you can visit countless lakes, rivers, and bays; you don’t have to pay expensive mooring fees; you can work on your boat right in your own driveway; and you don’t have to worry about it being damaged in the slip during a storm or heavy winds. But there’s one big problem: Many people are a bit apprehensive about rolling down the highway with hundreds or thousands of pounds of fiberglass riding on their bumper. It’s no wonder our boats quickly become our pride and joy, and the thought of having an accident on the road is worrisome. The truth of the matter, however, is that trailering is a lot easier and simpler than most people think and the average driver will quickly become accustomed to towing. The first and most important thing you need to make sure of before you hit the asphalt is that your rig is set up properly. Check the tow capacity of your vehicle and don’t exceed it. Also note that hitches that attach to the frame of your tow vehicle are far superior to those that attach to the bumper, and trailers that have their own brakes are superior to those that don’t. Before each and every towing trip, hitching up properly is imperative. Always be sure the hitch is secured properly over the ball, and never leave the driveway without inserting a safety pin into the catch. Otherwise, a large bump could be enough to bounce the hitch free from the ball. Also ensure that the safety chains are crossed before you attach them to the tow vehicle. This will support the trailer tongue and prevent it from digging into the roadway, if it

34 |

J AN

2017-BoatShowProgram.indd 34

6 -1 5

somehow comes free. If your trailer has brakes, you need to attach a safety line, which activates them from the trailer to the tow vehicle. Again, this is a safety measure that can save lives, much less your boat, if the hitch somehow fails. The final step to hitching properly is to plug in the lights and check them before you hit the road. Trailer lights are notorious for going bad (small wonder, since we dunk them in water every time we launch and retrieve the boat) and you’ll need to constantly monitor them. While travelling down the road, there are a few driving tactics you need to keep in mind. Obviously, you’ll want to increase your usual following distance and allow extra room for braking. When making a turn, always take it as widely as possible so the trailer tires don’t clip the curb. And when a large vehicle is passing you you may feel the wind blast shove your boat or your tow vehicle; you can reduce this effect by taking your foot off the accelerator (but not touching the brake) just as you’re being passed. If you feel the trailer swaying from side to side, which can be quite dangerous, you probably have a weight distribution problem. As a general rule of thumb the trailer’s tongue weight should

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT, SPORT & TRAVEL SHOW

be about 10-percent of its gross weight, and if it’s off, swaying can be the result. If you feel the trailer swaying while on the road, stop immediately and adjust the load. Once you get to your destination, you’ll have a new challenge to confront, backing the boat down the ramp. Learning how to back up is one of the toughest things for inexperienced trailer boaters to learn, but with some practice anyone can master the technique. The important thing to remember is that the boat will swing in the opposite direction of the tow vehicle. And remember, it’s practically impossible to back a trailer in a perfectly straight line, so don’t try to. Instead, plan on making small, slow turns back and forth as you reverse to and down the boat ramp. Luckily, there’s a simple solution to backing issues: practice, practice, practice. When you first begin trailering, it’s a good idea to go to a large, deserted parking lot, at a near-by school or park. Set out some cones to make yourself a “ramp,” and back down it a dozen or two times until you feel comfortable.

Personal Watercraft Need Love, Too

I

F YOUR TASTE, BUDGET AND personal style don’t necessarily allow for a boat, a personal watercraft may be just the ticket to get you out on the water. Whether it is your first purchase or part of a floating fleet, there are as many considerations when you are scoping out the marketplace – as well as maintenance and safety concerns that should be part of your decision. Start by choosing whether to purchase a new or used watercraft. In either case, you will need to establish a

36 |

J AN

2017-BoatShowProgram.indd 36

6 -1 5

BY LINDA WATER NELSON relationship with a dealer in your area. No matter how good the product or its condition, that personal watercraft will need to be serviced to assure its best performance and give you as few headaches as possible. Unless you are lucky enough to live very close to the water, there will also be a trailer for transportation, and it will require regular

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT, SPORT & TRAVEL SHOW

maintenance, as well. Plan on buying a cover, too. It will keep your new toy looking good longer. Most dealers carry an assortment of both new and used watercraft so, as you begin your shopping experience, plan to spend some time with a couple of dealers in your area. Get comfortable with the person at the dealership who will be your primary contact and check out the service and maintenance area. It will tell you a lot about how the dealership functions – and remember that once you have made your purchase it will 2 0 1 7

12/12/16 6:14 PM

be the service department that you will be working with on a regular basis. At least until you are ready to trade in and trade up. If you are purchasing a personal watercraft

from a private party, be sure to have it thoroughly checked out by the dealer that you plan to have service it in the future. It is also recommended that you ask that seller who has serviced and maintained the vehicle in the past. There may be a record of problems that will make your decision easier. It also helps if you have narrowed down your preferences so that you are not overwhelmed by options. Remember how much research you did when you bought a car or truck? It is the same principle. Make choices about the styling, number of seats (1 to 3), ergonomics and seating comfort, versatility, and – if you are buying new – innovations like braking options, off-throttle steering, speed limiting and reverse controls, and more. Whether a new or used watercraft is in your future, you should insist on one with an autokill switch that is easily accessible. As with any vehicle, the engine (usually two stroke or four stroke in a personal watercraft) is the heart of the machine. Check out the specs and understand that performance under specific conditions like towing will be affected if you don’t allow for enough power and capability. Once you have chosen and purchased that wonderful new toy there is a lot to learn before you venture out. Get the dealer to walk you through all of the features, safety considerations and limitations. Nothing is without limitations, and that includes personal JAN

2017-BoatShowProgram.indd 37

6 -1 5

Unless you have waterfront storage, you’ll probably need a trailer.

watercraft. Recognize that standard floatation devices are not adequate for personal watercraft. When you are zipping along the surface of the water and either fall or are thrown from one of these at 30 to 40 mph, you need the stability of full floation vests. Plan it into your budget. Always have a fire extinguisher in easy reach when you use a personal watercraft and make sure it is current as to expiration dates. Other things to take along, according to those in the know, are heavy-duty sunscreen, drinking water, flares (in case you have a

failure when you are out on the water and need help), and a waterproof floating storage container for your cell phone. Other things to know and practice: • Always let at least one person who is not accompanying you know where you are planning to go and when you expect to return. Call them when you get back. • Learn when licenses and permits are required for your personal watercraft, trailer and individuals who will be onboard. Laws vary dramatically from place to place and there are local, state and (sometimes) federal regulations what are in force. • Never use alcohol or drugs when you are using a personal watercraft and be extremely aware of your surroundings.

Shopping for the Right RV

C

HOOSING THE TYPE and size of RV that is right for you is very personal. The first step is to ask yourself how you will be using the RV. Will you be taking long trips or short ones? Will you be staying in one place or stopping at multiple camping areas on the same trip? How many people will be accommodated on a regular basis? Will they be adults or children? Do you plan to travel with pets? (more than 50% of RVers do). Do you already own a tow vehicle or planning to purchase one? Do you want a self-contained RV with its’ own gas or diesel engine? How much money

38 |

J AN

2017-BoatShowProgram.indd 38

6 -1 5

BY LINDA WATER NELSON do you have to spend? Are you planning to get a loan to cover the cost of purchase? Will you be buying new or used? Each of these is a consideration that will affect your choice. Making a list of your needs and answering these questions will help an RV dealer make the right recommendations; after all, you probably wouldn’t opt for a pop-up camper if you planned long trips with lengthy stays. One trend that might affect your RV choice is toward destination camping.

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT, SPORT & TRAVEL SHOW

The RV is literally delivered by the dealer to a camping location for an extended stay. The RVers drive their car to and from, but don’t actually trailer the RV.

Do your research

The more effort you invest at the front end of choosing an RV, the more satisfied that you will probably be with your decision. As with buying a car or truck today, the Internet, including user forums, is a great ally when researching the type of RV that might be right for you. You should attend outdoor shows and dealer open houses as a way to see a range of RVs. At a dealership, there will probably be some used RVs to check out. You can see the difference between 2 0 1 7

12/13/16 5:46 PM

the older and newer models and continue to solidify your thinking about what is right for you. If you will be towing with a vehicle that you already own or one that you plan to purchase, thoroughly check the manufacturers’ website for towing capabilities and load bearing specifics. Remember that fuel economy will be radically affected by the load that you are towing. About 90% of RV buyers already own their tow vehicle so actual specs are an important factor. Don’t rely on an old belief as to the limitations on what you can pull. RV manufacturers are committed to taking the weight out of trailers and your vehicle may be able to pull a larger unit than you thought.

guidelines that you have established for yourself. If you are financing, check to see if the RV that interests you can be financed as a second home which is often the case. If so, the interest on the loan is tax deductible. You can generally expect that your credit score will be a major factor in what can be financed, the same as it would be with a house or automobile. Check your credit scores in advance and correct any mistakes that you find. The down payment for an RV is usually about 10%, according to the RVIA spokesperson, but will be dependent upon your creditworthy status.

Size, type, fuel, and price range

Your RV buying experience will only be as good as the dealer you do business with. Talk to several before making a purchase. Evaluate them at the show and at their dealerships. Check with the Better Business Bureau and other rating services to find out what other customers report and whether or not complaints have been filed and how they were handled.

Some other considerations include where you plan to stay. Some larger RV units are not allowed in older RV parks, as well as state and national parks; if you are staying in hotter climates, you could need 50 amps and two air conditioners in your RV; in colder climates you might opt for more insulation. Will you be boondocking and need larger water and holding tanks – and, remember, a smaller RV is easier to maneuver off road or on back roads. After making a real world assessment of how and how often you will actually use your RV and researching the types of RVS, their pros and cons and your budget, contact your insurance agent to check out the price of insuring your trailer or motor home. Ask about rates and safety records for the type of RV you have selected. Higher rates may mean a history of more accidents. Again, the Internet and user forums will give you a picture beyond the brochures and manufacturers’ websites.

Find the right dealer and ask the right questions

You will probably be using the dealer that you buy from for service on your RV, too. Ask for a tour of their service facilities and find out what repairs they do onsite and which they send to other places. Check out gorving.com for a storehouse of useful information about RV dealers in your area. About 10 – 12% of people interested in making an RV purchase rent one before they buy. When doing this, it is best – for the obvious reason -- to experience it with the same mix of people that you will be traveling with after you buy. The Yellow Pages or an Internet search in your area should identify the places that rent the type of RV that interests you. If you are uncertain, take a few weekend trips in different RVs to solidify your decision. Remember that dealers will be offering special show prices at the show, so that is a good place to deal after you have made your decision. If you go to the show as a way of making that decision, ask if you can lock in show pricing for a week or a month. Dealers will often oblige.

l

Setting your budget

If you are not financing your RV purchase, your budget may be less of a concern, other than to stay within the JAN

Smart ATV Shopping

A

LL IT TAKES FOR MOST people to decide that they need to buy an ATV is a ride on one. The exhilaration and feeling of unbridled adventure cannot be matched by any other land vehicle today. However, the emotional kick needs to be matched by both a sense of responsibility and knowledge about which ATV is right for you. There are two basic types of ATVs. Utility ATVs are generally used for hunting and camping as well as for chores like earth or snow moving, while Sport ATVs, which have no front and rear racks, are more appropriate for speed, jumping and looking very cool. As they have gained a following, there has been enormous effort toward crossing over between the two, and there is even one that combines a boat and ATV for amphibian action. There are two engine types and each has benefits. The four-stroke engine has moving parts that are oiled on a continuous basis by an oil sump. These are either air or liquid cooled, with air being most common. They are the quietest and more fuel efficient in terms of mpg – a benefit for driving long trails. Lubrication on two-stroke (or twocycle) engines is achieved by actually burning fuel. A combination of gas and oil is mixed either by oil reservoir or by combining a measured amount of oil in the fuel tank. Two cycle engines are generally noisier with a smokier exhaust. They also burn more fuel. Other factors will include automatic clutch

or automatic transmission, size (usually a factor of budget) and two or four wheel drive, and drive shaft, chain drive or belt drive. All current ATVs have four wheels. The manufacturers decided some time ago that the incidence of accidents and liability suits just weren’t worth it. Think long and hard before buying one on the secondary market.

Do your research

Use the Internet, user forums and other research tools once you have settled on a few models. While every driver is different, other people’s experience can be an omen of what you might expect. Also, when selecting a dealer, check the Better Business Bureau and other consumer rating services to see if there have been complaints and how they have been handled.

Best Bait for Trophy Trout?

T

HE PURSUIT OF TROphy-sized speckled trout with artificial lures is all about mullet. At the end of the day, the lures used to fool the truly big trout are mullet imitators— because they are the key component in the diet of this elite class of specks. When trout get somewhere between

BY CHESTER MOORE 20-22 inches they change from being primarily a shrimp eater and small fish eater to being a connoisseur of larger mullet and other fish like croaker, sand trout and even small speckled trout. So, when it comes to pursuing them the angler that does the best mullet imi-

tation wins the prize. During winter and early spring the largest trout are caught basically by two kinds of lures: slowsinkers and topwaters. Both have their following and application but which is better? Or maybe the question should be, “Am I fishing them correctly?” This is the debate as I see it with a unique twist many anglers could benefit from. 2 0 1 7

Slow-sinkers are, as the name implies, lures that sink super slow with the goal of mimicking a wounded or slow moving baitfish. Big trout and baitfish alike have slow metabolism during winter months. Something that is easy to catch is struck at much more than something they have to chase. At least that is the theory. The Corky is the granddaddy of all slow sinkers. Developed by Paul Brown, it has caught record fish as well as many lifetime trout for anglers in Texas and beyond. It looks like a medium-sized mullet, sinks at a snail pace and has an erratic action when jerked. Other slow sinkers include the Catch 2000 for Mirrolure and Bomber’s Badonkadonk SS. The key with these kinds of lures is making many, many casts and putting it right in front of a big fish. By virtue of their slow sinking nature, these lures cover very little ground and require incredible patience on behalf of the angler. The first time I fished a Corky was back in 1997 in Matagorda Bay and I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. Moving so slow and methodically through the water and trying to get one or two good bites all day was and remains a challenge. Topwaters on the other hand also produce big trout. The Super Spook, various Top Dog models, the Skitter Walk and numerous mullet imitators by Sebile and others are effective during this period as well. Topwaters offer an advantage slowsinkers do not and that is the ability to cover lots of ground. An angler can make incredibly long casts and literally make more ground in an hour of wadefishing than someone could do in a day of using a slow sinker in a boat. Most true big trout enthusiasts will tell you the slow-sinkers catch more big fish than do the topwaters in winter and spring but they break them out due to the addiction to the “blowup factor”. Watching a big trout strike at or slurp down a topwaters is one of the greatest feelings in fishing, and when worked with consistency and precision they can JAN

2017-BoatShowProgram.indd 43

6 -1 5

FISHING FOCUS be effective. Many anglers however report that topwater action during this period results in a lot of blowups but very few hookups. If you look at many of the great big bass experts around the country, they rarely use slow-sinkers but instead use swimbaits, large plastic worms and topwaters. All of the above can cover water much quicker than a slow-sinker. Bass fishermen are all about covering water and eliminating unproductive areas. This inspired me to start off using topwaters to locate fish. The usual drill is to take a walking plug, make long casts and cover all of the key habitat in an area. I make very precision casts, paying special attention to walk the plug over the area well and even cut across at different angles. Sometimes this equals a caught fish but other times those missed blowups. As I got the missed blowups I started carefully observing where they occurred and threw back at those spots with a slow-sinker soft plastic. The result was far more fish caught. Think about it for a second. If a trout during the winter when their metabolism is at its lowest is aggressive enough

to come up to the surface and strike at a plug, don’t you think the same fish would be willing to hit something put in it is face? In this regard the topwater can be used to eliminate water without aggressive fish and the slow-sinker to catch those that did not quite have enough in them to take down your plug. As noted earlier, I have done the same thing using regular soft plastics and Gulp and had great results. Rig your plastics on light fluorocarbon line (8-10 lb) and on a 1/16 or 1/8 oz jighead. I have found that after you know the fish is not going to come up again, you can literally drop that rod and throw right back into the spot and get bit. This formula actually works well all winter. After each failed blowup the angler with the plastic would make an accurate cast right behind the plug and very often get bit. The truth is both slow sinkers and topwaters have an important role to play for anglers seeking big speckled trout. And in my opinion wise anglers will keep both handy and find ways to use them in conjunction with one another for the greatest results.

Check Your Bass Gear

W

E’RE ENTERING the height of another big bass season in Texas. Between now and the end of April, armies of lunker largemouths will make a hard push towards the bank to spawn in skinny water to create what will ultimately become the next generation of bass for us bass fishermen to catch. The biggest bass in the lake are almost always females, and many of them weigh significantly more during spring than at any other time of the year because their ovaries are plump with eggs. Biologists have told me that a mature female may weigh 10 percent heavier when her eggs are fully developed, possibly even more if she happens to get caught soon after consuming a big crappie or bar fish. Most anglers will agree that March is the top month for hooking a bass with a weight problem, and statistics show they are absolutely right. More 13-pound-plus Toyota ShareLunkers have been caught during March than any other month. There is no way to put a finger on how many bass weighing upwards of eight pounds are caught and released in Texas lakes during the spring months in any given year, but the number could easily mount into the thousands. As good as the odds are of connecting with a career bass during the springtime, the chances of losing one before the job is finished are probably a whole lot better. That’s because there is all kinds of stuff that can go wrong when a big bass is tugging on your string. Lines can break. Hooks can bend. Or, you could just take an old fashioned butt whipping. Here are a few things anglers can do to help reduce the odds of losing the battle when a big bass comes calling: TIE GOOD KNOTS: The knot used

44 |

J AN

2017-BoatShowProgram.indd 44

6 -1 5

BY MATT WILLIAMS to connect a lure to the line is the critical link between you and the fish. Tie a shoddy knot and you run a good risk of getting beat before the game gets started. The best knots can vary with the application. Among the most popular knots for general applications with braid, monofilament and fluorocarbon lines are the palomar, improved clinch knot and double clinch knot. The blood knot, double uni, Surgeons and Alberto knot are the best knots for joining two lines. A good source for learning these and many other useful knots is netknots.com. WET IT DOWN: When tying knots, always be sure to wet the line with saliva before cinching it down tight. Cinching dry line will create a tremendous amount of friction that will weaken the knot significantly. Also, be wary of a knot that doesn’t cinch down properly. It’s best to cut the line and start over if this happens. USE GOOD LINE: Monofilament and fluorocarbon fishing line can become dry and brittle over time. These lines should be re-spooled at least once year, possibly more often if you spend a lot of time on the water or backlash every now and then. Backlashes can cause mono or fluorocarbon lines to kink and create weak spots that could cause the line to snap prematurely. CHECK FOR ROUGH SPOTS: If you fish around heavy wood or rock, it would be a good idea to check for frayed spots by running the strip of line near the bait through your thumb and index finger. If you feel a rough spot, cut the line above the rough spot and re-tie. ROD GUIDES: Many brands of rod guides (what your line runs through) are equipped with ceramic inserts that can sometimes crack or break, creating a

HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL BOAT, SPORT & TRAVEL SHOW

sharp edge that can cut or damage line when it passes through. Use a Q-Tip to check for cracks or rough spots. If the cotton snags, the guide should be replaced. DRAG CHECK: Always keep a close eye on the reel drag to make sure it will slip before the amount of pressure on the line exceeds the line’s breaking strength. This is especially important with fluorocarbon and monofilament lines, but not so much with heavy-duty braids frequently used for flipping or frogging around heavy cover. Most guys like to cinch the drag super tight for the latter applications. HOOK CHECK: Hooks that aren’t sharp won’t provide good penetration. The best way to check a hook for sharpness is the thumbnail test. Place the hook point on your thumbnail, press down lightly and try to slide the hook to the side. If the hook sticks, it’s sharp. If it slides, it should be sharpened or replaced. It is also a good idea to keep close check on hooks for signs of rust. If stored in a moist environment, or holding baits that contain salt, hooks can rust and lose their strength in short order. ARMED FOR BEAR: It wouldn’t be wise to go bear hunting with a switch, nor would it be a good idea to go gunning for a lunker with a flyswatter for a fishing rod. Use the best rod you can afford. More important, make sure they are suited for the tactic or bait you are using. If you can only afford a couple of rods, you can’t go wrong with a medium and a medium/ heavy action, 6.5 to 7 feet long. The lighter medium action rod will work well for throwing square bill crankbaits, topwaters and jerk baits, while the medium/ heavy will be the better choice for Texas rigs, jigs, spinnerbaits, swim baits and Chatterbaits.

Tackle on Board

NBOARD FISHING tackle stowage is a great thing on a fishing boat. It allows you to keep all your goodies and gear close at hand, yet you never have to lug a tackle box around. But, there are some down-sides, too. Tackle may be exposed to moisture more than you’d like, and corrosion can turn your hooks dull. Jumping onto other people’s boats means you still need to have a bag prepped, which means buying double gear in many cases. And when all your

BY LENNY RUDOW gear is left aboard and a few weeks pass by between trips, it’s not always easy to remember exactly what you do or do not have aboard. These five tricks, however, will help make onboard tackle stowage work well. Onboard tackle stowage can be a great thing – or, not so much, if you don’t know these tricks. Moisture and corrosion are big problems associated with keeping all your gear aboard, but there are several ways

to combat it. You can put a cedar block or a silicon packet into each box, to help sap away the moisture and keep your gear dry. You can also improve ventilation, simply by leaving the door to a tackle station ajar (assuming that won’t allow rainfall to get inside). In extreme cases, it may be necessary to add a vent to an onboard tacklebox or tackle station. To help avoid moisture in the first place, never put a used lure or tackle back into the box until it’s completely dry. If you’re fishing in saltwater, naturally, give all your gear a freshwater rinse before drying it. Put lead weights into the lowest part of the tackle stowage system. If you elevate the lead, over time it will cause the plastic bottoms of tackle trays to deform. And on rough days, bouncing lead may even shatter the plastic. Always leave one empty tackle tray on the boat. That way, if a buddy invites you aboard his boat you can jump onto your own, and quickly assemble a selection of appropriate tackle to bring. When you return, you can unpack the same box and slide it right back into its spot, empty again, so it’s ready for next time. Insert a piece of cork or foam into the boxes you use for lead-heads and jigs, and stick the hooks into the cork or foam. This way, the heads won’t bounce against each other and chip the paint, as you run through rough seas. (Note – this works great for all kinds of tackle boxes, not just those that never leave the boat). Use these tricks, and you’ll find that onboard fishing tackle stowage isn’t merely just convenient—it’s also more effective and keeps your tackle and gear in good shape, too.

BY LENNY RUDOW you will not be a happy camper. That said, if you cancel your day of fishing every time your friendly local schizophrenic weatherman claims there’s a risk, you may well never leave the dock. Fortunately, you have gobs of options when it comes to making an educated decision about the weather. In fact, in the past couple of years those options

have rapidly multiplied, thanks to the internet, apps, and new inventions. Here are some of the latest and greatest ways to figure out what’s in store.

Weather Web

Getting on the web is a whole new experience these days, weather-wise. Sure, you still have those old stand-bys, like weatherchannel.com, weatherunderground.com, and your local news. But some newer sites that focus purely 2 0 1 7

site that I almost never leave the dock without checking it first. Fishweather overlays wind forecasts over a detailed NOAA chart, allowing you to choose the exact location and see all the wind, wave, and sea condition data. What’s even better is the ability to break down the forecasts into three hour increments. For those of us who are sick and tired of NOAA’s overly-broad and unspecific marine forecasts, Fishweather is a hands-down winner. Another nice thing about using the web for your weather is that you can continue checking it throughout the day, if you have a smart phone. Added bonus: you can set your phone to give you alerts, in case of deteriorating weather. Which leads us to...

APPlied Science

on marine forecasting have taken it a step farther. Buoyweather.com, for instance, includes not just forecasts but also realtime weather buoy data, wave charts, sea temperature and chlorophyll charts, and tide data. And since the forecasting is based around a chart (choose Texas from the Gulf States list, put the cursor over your specific area, and click), it’s incredibly easy to use. Another good one is Fishweather.com. In fact, I’ve become so accustomed to using this JAN

2017-BoatShowProgram.indd 47

6 -1 5

Since that smart phone is in your pocket, why not take full advantage of it? You can choose from countless weather apps these days, although you should recognize that some are a lot better than others. A handful of the most popular include Weatherbug, Weather Underground, The Weather Channel, Bluefin, and Lightning Finder. All have their own strengths and weaknesses. Here are some key things to look for when you choose which weather app is best for you. Obviously, you’ll want to make sure it covers the areas where you regularly go fishing and boating. Remember, some apps only cover specific regions for free, and you’ll have to pay extra to get complete coverage. Another important item is the availability of current Doppler radar images. Many apps (or free versions of apps which can be upgraded for a fee) only provide text forecasts. These are usually based on those same NOAA predictions (sometimes they appear verbatim), which really doesn’t help much. On the other hand, real-time animated Doppler lets you see storms to track their direction and speed of travel. This is a great help in deciding when you need to head back to the dock. Graphic lightning displays are another great feature to look for. Lightning is one of those things we boaters really

want to avoid. So, seeing when and where strikes are occurring can help you make much more intelligent go/ no-go decisions. Some apps also include wind speed data, either in an updated or forecasted form. Generally speaking, forecasts don’t do you much good unless you’re on the water for an extended period of time. But real-time wind updates are great for helping you identify trends, the approach of fronts, or changes in the current conditions.

More Tools

Now, let’s say you don’t have a smart phone. Or more likely, you don’t get service in some of the areas you go boating. There are still some weather tools you can utilize. The first and best is satellite weather, such as Sirius/XM satellite. In most cases it can interface with your chartplotter/GPS, and put those weather maps and forecasts right up on the helm. This is a more expensive option than most others. A receiver costs between $100 and $500 depending on brand, and you’ll also have to pay a monthly access fee which ranges from about $10 to $50/month (depending on what level of service you choose). But that expense gets you everything those apps and web sites offer, and then some. Finally, for the lightning-averse among us, you can also get a dedicated lightning detector. These don’t cost much ($50 to $100) and are simple to use. Just turn them on, and a series of blinking lights and/or tones will alert you to lightning strikes within range (which varies from unit to unit but covers at least 50 miles) as they take place. It also shows how far away they are. Aside from all of these goodies and gadgets (technology be damned) you still have those old weather rules that mariners have lived by for centuries. So, no matter what gear and goodies you may or may not have on board, always remember:
