Welcome to Galveston! The Texas Water community gathers at the coast to celebrate — what else — water! Volunteers for Texas Water 2013 in Galveston, led by chairs Drew Molly (TAWWA) and Meera Victor (WEAT), have been putting in long hours over the past months to make your life easier. The daytime technical sessions, crafted under the watchful eyes of Alissa Lockett (TAWWA) and Trooper Smith (WEAT), are designed to share the information that will make your work easier. The recordbreaking Exhibit Hall invites you to learn about new tools and technology that solve problems, some that you may not even know you have. And when the learning and networking are done, there’s a chance to have more than a little fun at the Night at the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. And don’t forget to check out the new Texas Water app! Scan one of the QR codes posted around the conference (also available on Page 10 of the program) to access the app, or go to eventmobi.com/txwater to find it online. We hope you enjoy Texas Water 2013!

2:15 TO 3:15 P.M., Outdoor Exhibit Area Who is the fastest at cutting a piece of 8-inch SDR 35 pipe with a hand saw? It’s time to show who really has the quickest hands in Texas. This competition is open to everyone, just show up and put your name on the list. There is a $5 entry fee. There will be a Utility Executive head to head competition, followed by an Open Event for everyone with categories for Men and Women. Grab a friend and go head to head to earn some bragging rights. The $5 entry fee proceeds benefit the Joe King II Memorial Fund. First and Second Place in all categories will receive a trophy and cash prizes. Contact Grace Wike at 512-363-0611 or Jeff Sober with any questions.

In the Exhibit Hall, join in the fun and play MATCH THE NAME GAME! Winning one of the great prizes in the Match the Name Game is easy: Match the names on the Game Card with the same name imprinted on a label randomly distributed at exhibitor booths throughout the Exhibit Hall (don’t forget to visit the Outdoor Exhibit Area, too). When all matching labels have been affixed to the Game Card, place your Game Card in the Door Prize Drum, located near the back of the main Exhibit area. One Game Card is designated for Wednesday and one for Thursday. Drawings will be held both days so you have two chances to win! Game Cards are not interchangeable. Every attendee is eligible to play. You do not need to be present at the time of the drawings; see back of Game Cards for details of drawing times and pick-up location. Please note: Exhibitors are not eligible to win. If an eligible winner fails to pick up the prize on the day of the drawing, the prize will be forfeited.

WE BEGIN FROM

THE END. To truly understand what we stand for, start 110 years from now- where our pipe is still safely underground, bringing fresh drinking water into millions of homes. Where the earth is free from landfills and municipalities are free from worry. That’s what the world looks like with 100% recyclable, SMaRT© Certified, ductile iron pipe made by honest, hard working people. For over 50 years, we’ve served as trusted advisors to municipalities and contractors, offering quality products along with our guidance and expertise every step of the way. Just imagine what we can do in the next 110.

EXTRAS FACILITY TOURS

Attendees who purchased tickets will enjoy one of three tours on Friday morning. Gulf Coast Waste Disposal Authority Bayport Facility The Gulf Coast Waste Disposal Authority was created by the Texas Legislature in 1969 as a non-tax supported unit of local government dedicated to waste management activities. Attendees signing up for this tour will visit the Authority’s Bayport Facility, which can treat up to 30 million gallons of wastewater per day from over 60 industrial and two municipal customers. High strength wastewater with an average BOD level of over 1,000 mg/L is treated with a two-step activated sludge process. The first step uses high purity oxygen applied in covered tanks that are designed to eliminate organic air emissions. The second step relies on conventional aeration using air diffusion. The water is then clarified, disinfected, and passed through a series of ponds before being discharged into the Bayport Ship Channel. Belt presses are used to dewater sludge generated during treatment. Closed-toe shoes are required. Moody Gardens Water Treatment Plant and Aquarium Life Support Systems Attendees who participate in this tour will see two unique facilities that provide treated water for many of the operations at Moody Gardens. Reuse treatment will be the first stop. Moody Gardens receives treated wastewater from a nearby wastewater treatment plant and then performs additional treatment using a series of straining and filtration steps, finishing with reverse osmosis. The facility treats up to one million gallons of water per day for use on the golf course, in the cooling towers, and for irrigation. The second half of the tour will focus on the life support and water supply systems for the aquarium. These systems include filtration, bio-towers, skimmers, and ozone that treat the water to support the aquatic life housed in the aquarium. Closed-toe shoes are required. City of Galveston 30th Street Pump Station Galveston’s 30th Street Pump Station is a critical piece of the City’s infrastructure, providing up to 20,000 gallons per minute of water to about half of the island’s citizens. This state of the art facility, constructed at a cost of $16.5 million, replaces a pump station that had been operational since 1903. The original facility was flooded during Hurricane Ike, and it remained out of operation for several days following the storm. The new pump station includes

a higher barrier wall that will limit the possibility of flooding from future storm surges, and it is equipped with diesel generators and automatic switching that would allow the pump station to operate at full load for seven days in the event of a power failure. Chlorine and liquid ammonium sulfate feed facilities provide the ability to boost chloramine residuals leaving the pump station. Both the new pump station and the 1903 pump station will be included on this tour. Closed-toe shoes are required.

GUEST PROGRAM

WED., APRIL 10 – THURS., APRIL 11

MEET AT GARDEN CAY, HOTEL LOBBY Moody Gardens with its Aquarium and Rainforest Pyramids and Discovery Museum will be an exciting backdrop to the Texas Water 2013 Guest Program. Galveston Island offers relaxing beaches, superb restaurants, marvelous downtown shopping, numerous antique stores, incredible art galleries, fabulous entertainment and one of the largest and well-preserved concentrations of Victorian architecture in the country. We will begin each day at 8 a.m. with a light continental breakfast in the Garden Cay Room located off the hotel lobby. On Wednesday we will take a tour of Galveston narrated by Shirley Van Buskirk, a long-time resident of the island, who will include personal and interesting stories about notable Galvestonians as well as historical facts and narratives about events and places. We will also see the many carvings created from the trees killed by hurricane Ike which now adorn so many Galveston homes in the east (and older) end of that part of the island. We will lunch at Mosquito Cafe and then tour the Moody Mansion and the Bishops’ Palace. The second day Shirley will take us to the historic Galveston Strand District and on to The Great Storm Theater and the very entertaining and interesting Oil Rig Museum. The tall ship Elissa is also back in Galveston and will be available for touring. Lunch on the second day will be in the Strand District, followed by some stops at the interesting area shops and art galleries. The bus will be available to bring groups back to the hotel that wish to take advantage of all that Moody Gardens offers and will return in plenty of time to prepare for the evening event, which is included with the Guest Program.
