hen Texas Land Conservancy was founded by Edward C. “Ned” Fritz, it was with one simple mission: to conserve natural areas in our state. For thirty years, Texas Land Conservancy (TLC) has been able to do just that and do it with increasing efficacy and at a steadily growing rate. TLC now has a conservation portfolio that protects 109 properties encompassing almost 85,000 acres. From its grassroots beginnings to an accredited land trust in the top 2% of land trusts nationwide for acreage conserved, TLC has grown a lot. Through that growth, the organization has maintained its focus on the most important mission of all: to protect the natural areas and places you care about all around the state, for the benefit of present and future generations of Texans. We do this not just because the heritage of our state is one of a landed past, but because the future ecological stability of our state depends on it. Stitching together networks of conserved lands allows threatened ecosystems to have a fighting chance. To celebrate thirty years of TLC’s conservation work, members, volunteers, board members and supporters from all over the state came together at a gala on the shores of Lake Austin this past fall. We all reflected on TLC’s three decades of conservation victories and looked ahead towards the inevitable conservation challenges that are to come. As we reflected, I was inspired by the commitment of the founders and early volunteers (of what was then NAPA) who worked so hard kicking off the Texas conservation movement. Without their early leadership, the state we live in now would be a very different place; many pristine natural areas would already have succumbed to development. Looking around the gala I was equally uplifted to see a new generation of conservationists stepping up to join this work. Even those of us who live in cities like Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio or El Paso know the value of nature and seek to spend time outside experiencing Texas’ natural beauty. We know why nature is valuable beyond the worth placed on it by development. Together we can help preserve remaining wild spaces in our state and take on the conservation challenges of the coming decades. I’ve never been more confident in our group to meet those challenges, and lead the way. Texas Land Conservancy has made a commitment to the people of Texas to protect their natural heritage forever. With your help we are working towards a Texas future we all can enjoy.

TLC celebrated 30 years of conservation with a gala in Austin at the Vitruvian Domain, a 65 acre property on Lake Austin that was conserved with TLC in 2011. TLC co-founder, Genie Fritz, was honored for her years of commitment to the organization and to Texas conservation. Over 300 guests from all over the state dined under the pecan trees and joined us to celebrate in the beautiful late fall evening.

The Ned Fritz Society Texas Land Conservancy was founded in 1982 by Edward C. “Ned” Fritz, a Dallas attorney who was deeply committed to conservation. His passion and vision were instrumental in protecting tens of thousands of acres. He was a voice for Texas’ most vulnerable natural resources. In late 2011, TLC established a giving society in honor of Ned’s tireless commitment to protect Texas’ natural areas. Ned Fritz Society members, donors of $1,000 or more, gather each year at a memorable farm-to-plate dinner on a TLC preserve. The 2012 Ned Fritz Society dinner was held at beautiful White Creek Canyon Ranch in the Hill Country. To join the Ned Fritz Society, please contact Callie Thompson at: callie@texaslandconservancy.org.

The Texas Land Conservancy (formerly Natural Area Preservation Association) is an accredited non-profit land trust with a mission to conserve natural areas in Texas and to protect the physical and ecological integrity of their wildlife habitat, native plant communities, and scenic landscapes for the benefit of present and future generations. We strive to: Reduce the negative effects of land fragmentation and poorly planned development by protecting critical lands through ownership or permanent conservation easements. Maintain a substantial and diverse inventory of protected lands that reflect the biological diversity and significance of Texas’ natural heritage. Responsibly steward our conservation easements and land holdings through monitoring, land management, and enforcement of restrictions. Restore and enhance native habitats. Collaborate with other organizations and individuals as appropriate to conserve and protect additional areas not protected by TLC. Educate the public about Texas’ natural areas and provide opportunities for the public to enjoy TLC’s protected properties.
