There’s always something new and cool happening in Austin. Here’s the lowdown on some of the hottest things in the Capital City.
By Shelley Seale
ZACH Theatre
[1]
Let’s face it: the news can get you down, especially in an election year. ZACH Theatre has the perfect summer antidote—two seriously entertaining comedies. Martin Burke stars in the riotously funny British comedy One Man, Two Guvnors (June 1-26). Set in the Swingin' Sixties, it promises laughout-loud slapstick, with a live Beatles-era band accompanying. You can also catch one of the fastest-rising stars in Austin theater, J. Robert Moore, in the one-man play Buyer and Cellar (June 8-August 14). Moore plays Alex, a struggling Hollywood actor who takes an outrageous job working in the underground showbiz collection of Barbra Streisand at her Malibu house. ZACHTHEATRE.ORG
One of the most exciting new spaces in town, the Yard’s collaborative mix of workspaces spans more than eight acres off South Congress. From creative offices and breweries to maker and artist studios, The Yard will be a diverse place where people and ideas meet. Coworking and event spaces like Vuka and Impact Hub will call it home, along with The Austin Winery, St. Elmo Brewing, Spokesman Coffee & Beer and Still Austin Whiskey Company. THEYARDAUSTIN.COM

In Austin, Manville Chan is one of the hosts, hosting professional-standard weekly dinner parties in his hip downtown apartment. The senior product manager for a food and tech startup says, “Having traveled all over the world, my culinary influences are global. My goal is to create an international ‘culinary staycation’ for my guests, with the lights of downtown Austin as a backdrop.” EATWITH.COM

The Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC) hosts its fifth annual runway extravaganza, Art Bra Austin, on June 4th at the Palmer Events Center. Seventy-two sensational pieces of wearable art will be modeled by 72 extraordinary BCRC clients and auctioned, with all proceeds benefitting BCRC. Art Bra Austin is a fun, glamorous event that has raised more than $1 million over the past four years. ®

The art bras are handmade by Austin’s creative community of professional and amateur designers, artists, and jewelers. The client models are treated like stars, with professional makeup artists and hair stylists to get them runway-ready. Beverly Barr, a 2015 model, says, “We got to put the ugly part of cancer away and celebrate the courage, tenacity, and beauty in this sisterhood.” ARTBRAAUSTIN.ORG
Rock Rose at The Domain
The newest section of The Domain, Rock Rose, is the first entertainment district outside downtown. Featuring an art-infused streetscape, Rock Rose brings a local focus with funky, Austin-original businesses such as Birds Barbershop (with a kitschy Palm Springs design); Raven + Lily’s fairtrade fashion for women; and Weathered Coalition, an apparel and apothecary shop for the modern man. There’s also a strong dining and nightlife scene, with East Side King Thai-Kun, Mia Italian Tapas & Bar, Sway, Tarka Indian Kitchen and The Dogwood. Bars such as Jack & Ginger’s Irish Pub, Kung Fu Saloon and Lavaca Street Bar are sure to keep the fun going late, along with rooftop bar 77 Degrees and dance club The Rose Room.
A Flipside photobooth is huge fun for summer events. Guests all get a personal flipbook and a 7-second video to share. Lights, action, flip!

The buzz in Dallas this summer is tantalizing. Prepare to sizzle!

Opened in historic downtown McKinney in June 2015, Sugarbacon Proper Kitchen [1] features New American cuisine with Texas undertones. Topping the menu is, of course, a dish that shares the restaurant’s name. Chef Jon Thompson and co-owner Johnny Carros oversaw the transformation of an 80-year-old filling station into a highly anticipated restaurant, putting it on the fast track to a Dallas top 10 spot in its first six months.
Craft brewery openings are taking Greater Dallas by storm. Producing a wide range of lagers, ales, ciders, seasonal brews and IPAs, most offer weekly tours and tastings along with events like yoga classes, pet adoption days, trivia contests, bike races and live entertainment. Among the better known are Deep Ellum Brewing Company, located in the edgy entertainment district near downtown Dallas, and Lakewood Brewing Company of Garland. Denton is home to Audacity Brewhouse and Armadillo Ale Works, popular with college students and Denton’s arts community. McKinney has two craft breweries, the Bavarian-style Franconia Brewing Company and rustic TUPPS Brewery. Also in the area are Grapevine Craft Brewery (Farmers Branch), Cobra Brewing (Lewisville) and Bishop Cider

The Carros-Thompson team started 2016 by generating even more buzz with the announcement of two new ventures. First up, Butcher Board, next to Sugarbacon and offering hand-carved sandwiches highlighting smoked and braised meats. Guests can get to-go orders, sit inside or on a front patio that features a pair of vintage gas pumps. Up soon, Sugarbacon 2, opening in Dallas' Lakewood area. (Look for it late summer or early fall.)

South Padre Island Worth a trip to South Texas
By Gabi De la Rosa
Texans have a lot to be proud of, and the fact that we have a tropical oasis
in our backyard should be on that list. South Padre Island, part of the world’s longest barrier island and with over 300 days of sunshine annually, is just a short plane ride or fun road trip from anywhere in the state. Once you arrive, ditch your car keys and just walk, bike, take a decked-out scoot coupe or golf cart anywhere you want to go. (The island is only 4.5 miles long and barely a half mile wide.)
South Padre Island’s climate also makes it a perfect habitat for many animal species from birds, to fish and plants. The island is part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail and is a temporary home or stopping point for hundreds of birds on their spring and fall migration. Become a part of the birding scene at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center . Walk along their nearly two miles of trails and catch a glimpse of not only birds, but many other animals in their natural habitat. Visit Sea Turtle Inc. and learn about sea turtle rescue, release and meet Allison, the first sea turtle ever to successfully use a prosthesis to help her swim. There are also dolphin excursions which will give you a glimpse of bottlenose dolphins, and if you are lucky, you might catch up with a pod that will swim alongside the boat. One of the best things about the island is the great local food. Make sure to have the lasagna and S’more pizza at Gabriella’s. Get your Tex-Mex fix at Señor Donkey’s and take advantage of the fresh seafood found on almost every menu on the island. BLT for breakfast anyone? Enjoy bacon, lobster and tomato eggs benedict and a mimosa while savoring your beach view at the Palm's Resort beachside café. South Padre Island has something to fit everyone’s budget. If you are looking for luxury, book a room at one of the island’s four full-service hotels and stop in for an hour-long massage at the luxurious Sapphire Spa. Just remember, you can’t get more luxurious than the sand, surf and fun which are free, open 24/7 and a welcome treat for everyone who visits South Padre Island. SOPADRE.COM

Jordan
Spieth By Pete Frank
In just three years, Jordan Spieth has become not only one of the top-ranked professional golfers in the world, he has transformed the game of golf for the better. Spieth has brought a fresh and inspiring attitude, that all of us can learn from, to not only the game but to life in general. Spieth grew up in Dallas, in a selfless family environment, where the focus was on how they could all help take care of Ellie, his younger sister, who was born with a neurological disorder. Ellie inspired Spieth to launch his Family Foundation, which provides financial assistance and a platform for supporting children with special needs, military families and junior golf programs. His family's spirit instilled a strong sense of determination and perseverance into the young Spieth. He learned that to succeed in life, he needed a good team.
Even a quick glance at this former University of Texas Longhorn’s record shows how successful this approach has been for him. Spieth’s career highlights include being the 2012 NCAA Champion (as a freshman),

Thanks to those early lessons, Spieth, who turns 23 in July, has developed a playing philosophy that is both noteworthy and impressive. In match play competitions, he plays as if he is behind by two strokes and never looks at the score. He does this to put pressure on himself at every hole.
TEXAS LIFESTYLE | ROUGHING IT 2013 PGA Rookie of the Year, the youngest American player ever to make the World Top 10, the 2015 Masters Champion, and reaching the top slot in the Official World Golf Ranking at 22. (He became the second youngest player to become No. 1. Tiger Woods was 21 when he became No. 1 in 1997.) This summer, as golf returns to the Olympics for the first time since 1904, he is part of the four-man team representing the United States. Spieth's win at last year's U.S. Open was a great example of winning through teamwork. His team got to the course weeks in advance to study every green and every break, which resulted in some of the best putting in the history of the game. Spieth is a classic balanced golfer who doesn't lead the tour in a specific statistical category, yet he knows how to score and win. Like all pros, he pursues the game with a clear understanding of each and every shot, yet he also brings an incredible calmness and mental focus that makes him unbeatable—most of the time. He brings a purity and strength to the game of golf, and inspires all of us to be our best working as a team on the course and in life. JORDANSPIETHGOLF.COM

Welcome Home: The Hottest Trends in Home Design By Simon Murray
Almost the minute it went away,
the mid-century modern style was poised to make a comeback. Sleek lines, transparent livable spaces, an abundance of natural light—for homes, mid-century modern is the equivalent of the iPod; less being much, much more. In an age where form doesn’t follow function—think of how many separate functions our phones are capable of—function is now the sole operative word, and what better than a style that makes use of conceptually open (and limitlessly functional) spaces?
Photos courtesy of S&R Development (top: left & right), Greico Modern Homes (bottom: left & right)
When designing the trendy sanctuaries homeowners increasingly desire in their rush to decompress from the lighting-fast speed of the modern rat race, the mid-century modern style has never seemed better. Never has this been more true, either, for custom builds across Texas, in homes where an “Atomic Age” light fixture, a bronze metal sun mirror, and Don Draper deposited in an Eames Lounge Chair would not look out of place.
34 Texas Lifestyle Magazine | Summer 2016
TEXAS LIFESTYLE | HABITAT “Across the board, that’s what we get asked for,” says Dallas-based designer and builder Tom Greico, of Greico Modern Homes. With the mid-century modern style “just about anything goes,” including dressing them with everything from modern to traditional and antique furniture, and all kinds of artwork. While traditional homes are itemized and structured—a living room here, check; a kitchen there, check—they can also be stuffier and far less visually pleasing as a result. The newest trends make use of big, gorgeous, livable spaces; as well as fluidity between indoors and outdoors, says Greico. “Things have changed in the last few years— we’re doing more open spaces,” concurs Dallas builder Saad Chehabi, president and CEO of S&R Development. “We’re also doing a lot of oversized floor-to-ceiling windows with very dark frame colors. Saad confirmed that in the last few years his firm has exclusively constructed for clients in a neo-classical style that he calls “clean-line contemporary.” “Nobody wants busy, nobody wants traditional,” says Saad. “It’s a lot cleaner, and a lot of bigger open spaces.” That includes clean white walls with no moldings, linear rectangular fireplaces and energy efficient spaces (such as fully sealed attics). But what’s all this added efficiency without the cherry on the top? Namely, complete automation that rivals the Jetsons. “Home automation is becoming more affordable, and more mainstream,” says Greico. “It used to be you spent $20,000 to get your house automated. Now, you can get it for a couple of thousand dollars.”
Mainstreaming Green Building Peter Pfeiffer, of Austin-based Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture, first got into “green” energy in the 1970s. Earth Day had just become a nationally recognized concept, and the oil embargo had sent gas prices skyrocketing. When he eventually settled in Austin, a stint at the University of Texas made him see the light: but not the one you might expect. For the past 36 years, Pfeiffer has led the charge towards “high performance design,” derisively referring to solar panels and geothermal pumps as “gizmos” that get more play than they really should. Honored in 2003 by The National Association of Home Builders for his lifelong achievements in “mainstreaming” green building, Pfeiffer’s fundamental question is simple: “Rather than relying on these things that break, why don’t we just design our buildings to need less energy in the first place?” Pfeiffer's approach formed the basis for a national energy program. After being tabbed by a think-tank formed by the Austin mayor and city council to look into alternatives to the building of another power p l a n t, t h e g r o u p l ooked int o energy-saving techniques that could be implemented citywide. Their efforts laid the groundwork for what would come to be known as Energy Star (the Environmental Protection Agency program’s star is a reference to the Lone Star State), started in Austin 35 years ago, which designs and subsidizes energy efficient appliances. There's still a lot of work to do to spread the word that a common sense approach can be a lot less expensive to implement, says Pfeiffer. “Design the building to use less energy in the first place,” he says. “Once you get that dealt with, then you can see if it’s worth it buying solar panels for your roof.”

The Margarita Smoke Show
A T e x M e x C l a s s i c I s n’ t s o C l a s s i c A ny m o r e By Susie Oszustowicz
Once the classic is mastered though, what’s a bartender to do? Answer: find the wildest take on the margarita possible. And they’ve certainly upped the ante, throwing in smoked, spiced, spiked and even flaming elements to the quintessential Texas libation. 38 Texas Lifestyle Magazine | Summer 2016
PARLIAMENT (DALLAS)
HG SPLY CO. (DALLAS)
This smoky treat by Dallas barman Stephen Halpin is in the running for Patron’s “2016 Margarita of the Year” for good reason. Halpin infuses smoke into a helping of Patrón Citrónge Mango by hand, then teams the infused tequila with another generous helping of Patrón Reposado. (More is usually better, right?) Topping it with fresh mango puree and rimming the glass with Tajin (Mexican chili salt) makes this a ‘rita like you’ve never tasted before.
This margarita’s beet-infused tequila deliciousness rivals the view from the rooftop patio. The Double Under doubles down with rosemary turbinado to balance out the earthiness of the beets.

TOP KNOT (DALLAS) Pegu Club [2]
While margaritas and tequila are synonymous, one of Dallas’ newest spots, Top Knot, is shaking up tradition with their gin (yes, gin) margarita, the Pegu Club. This isn’t your grandpa’s gin concoction; they’ve added a bit of citrus, orange Curaçao and bitters, and muddled cucumbers. PASTRY WAR (HOUSTON) Margarita de la Casa
While still only using the conventional ingredients for a margarita, this option from Bobby Heugel (of Anvil Bar & Refuge) tastes a bit more haute than your usual shaken or frozen marg thanks to its use of Key and Persian limes and citrus salt. And the extra tequila. Add some extra flavor with a float for a buck.
ESQUIRE TAVERN (SAN ANTONIO) Nuestra Margarita
Said to be one of the best margaritas in the country, this marg may take away clarity, but gives to charity. Esquire sets apart their “house” margarita from the mediocre versions swizzled by tourists on the Riverwalk just below by using two tequilas—Fortaleza Blanco and Siembra Azul Reposado—and fresh Key limes. Hot, Hot, Hot Sauce By Natalie K. Gould
It ’s no secret that we Texans love our food spicy. But as much as we love to feel the heat, being able to taste the flavors of a dish is just as important. So when we go to pick a hot sauce to douse our tacos, meats, eggs and really anything with, it’s got to be hot and full of flavor. We rounded up the best hot sauces made right here in the Lone Star State for you to add to that growing collection we know you have overflowing in your pantry. 40 Texas Lifestyle Magazine | Summer 2016
BEST OVERALL: Big Daddy’s Amplified Heat
[1]
This sauce is everything any good Texan could hope for: pecan-smoked jalapeños, St. Arnold’s Lawnmower beer, a touch of molasses and fresh lime. Ok, sure, it’s not the hottest sauce that has ever graced our tastebuds. But, oh those flavors. Big Daddy Trevi and his wife Becky started their famous sauces in their Houston kitchen using peppers grown in their backyard. You’ll find yourself using this sauce on as many things as you can cook, but we recommend a flame-grilled flank steak cooked medium. BIGDADDYSASSBURN.COM
BEST MILD HOT SAUCE: Frankie V’s Creamy Hatch Chile Sauce [2]
Maybe you have friends coming from out of state and they’re not accustomed to our spicy way of eating. This is a perfect “I don’t like spicy food” or a “serve it to anyone and put it on anything” hot sauce. Kids will also love it. The hatch chile flavor rings through loud and clear with just a small kick to remind you that we’re still in
the Southwest. A creamy hot sauce, it’s a little thicker than you’d find in a vinegarbased sauce. It’s organic, gluten free, vegan and has absolutely no preservatives, so your West Coast friends will feel right at home. Since it is all natural, it has a shorter shelf life than you’re used to, so once you open it, you better put that stuff on everything. FRANKIEVSKITCHEN.COM
BEST LOUISIANASTYLE SAUCE: Big Al’s Texas Hot Sauce
[4]
There are times when only a Louisiana hot sauce will do. But instead of opting for the popular yellow and red label, keep it Texas with Big Al. He boasts that “this sauce goes with everything, from boiled possum to fricasseed zebra,” but we recommend you use it on wings, dressings, smoked meats, and even popcorn and chips. The sauce has a distinctly Texas flavor, while still maintaining the familiar Louisiana taste you’d expect. BIGALSTEXASRUBS.COM continued on page 42.
TEXAS LIFESTYLE | HOT
BEST FRUIT-FORWARD HOT SAUCE: Mikey V’s Peach Habanero Delight [3]
Don’t let the peach in the name fool you; this sauce delivers a full-strength kick with just the right amount of peach and pineapple for a sweet sigh of relief after the initial burn. Paired best with hot summer days, cold beer and fresh fish tacos, it’s also great with chicken, pork and even lamb. Don’t expect to find it at your local grocer; it’s only available online and in a few stores around Austin. But if you’re in the area, you can always pop into the main outpost, Mikey V’s Foods, in Georgetown. MIKEYVSFOODS.COM
BEST HOTTER THAN HOT SAUCE: Briggs True Ghost Pepper Sauce
You want hot? You got it. This is not for amateurs. This is not for weaklings.

42 Texas Lifestyle Magazine | Summer 2016
This is for those who know what they’re doing with years of experience. The ghost peppers, cayenne and habaneros will have your mouth singing. You can expect bold, smokey flavors without the vinegar overpowering. It goes great on tacos, especially with some fresh cilantro and lime juice. And don’t be afraid to try a few shakes in your favorite chilis, soups and gumbos. Best not to bring this out when Northern friends come to visit. BRIGGSTRUE.COM
BEST HABANERO SAUCE: Yellowbird Sauce [5]
This Austin-based sauce is a fresh take on the classic Texas habanero-based hot sauce. The sauce is brightened up with organic carrots and tangerine juice, giving it an orangey-yellowy hue. In true Austin form, this sauce is 100% natural, with no added preservatives. The sauce is slow-cooked, so it tempers the heat and lets the flavor of the habanero shine through. YELLOWBIRDSAUCE.COM

Hot Pits: The Best of Texas BBQ By Natalie K. Gould
BBQ may as well be the official state food of Texas (in fact, we’re not entirely sure it’s not). Unlike other states, sauce typically takes a backseat to the deeply smoked meats here in the Lone Star State. Depending on where you are in Texas, post oak, pecan, mesquite, cherry and hickory are the smoking woods of choice. Central, East and West Texas BBQ styles vary enough that it’s hard to compare one with another. Even the way the meat is prepared and sliced (or not) depends on its geographic location. That said, here are our top picks for hot pits. 44 Texas Lifestyle Magazine | Summer 2016
BEST CENTRAL TEXAS BBQ: La Barbecue
Nestled in the Aztec Food Park is the unassuming La Barbecue. Visitors love that they don’t have to camp out and wait for four hours like other popular Austin BBQ joints. Don’t miss the almost impossibly black, barky brisket, housemade sausage and, maybe most importantly, the beef rib. It is exactly what all your beefy, barbecuey dreams are made of. BEST EAST TEXAS BBQ: Stanley's Famous Pit Bar-B-Q [2]
2
Don’t be surprised if you show up at 11:30 a.m.—half an hour after lunch starts—to find the brisket is sold out at this BBQ mecca. The pit has been around since 1959, so it’s safe to say they know what they’re doing. Your best bet is the four-meat sampler, so you can try a variety. Brisket, ribs and turkey should definitely be three of those. We trust you’ll make a wise choice for the fourth (it should be sausage). 525 S. BECKHAM AVE | TYLER STANLEYSFAMOUS.COM

BEST WEST TEXAS BBQ: Pody’s BBQ [1]
Tucked away in the small West Texas town of Pecos, Pody’s BBQ smokes up memorable ribs and brisket with outstanding sides like green chile hominy. The brisket crust is almost immorally dark, only to reveal a pronounced smoke ring that would fire up any pitmaster. Pody’s habanero barbecue sauce will remind you that you’re deep in spicy food country and you best not forget it. 1330 S CEDAR ST | PECOS FACEBOOK.COM/PODYSBBQ
BEST DFW BBQ: Hutchins BBQ [3]
DFW is newer to the BBQ cool kids’ table, but it’s making a name for itself nonetheless. You can never go wrong with mainstays like Pecan Lodge, Lockhart Smokehouse, Sonny Bryan’s and North Main, but travel north about half an hour and you’ll find a true BBQ treasure. The brisket, ribs and sausage are consistently outstanding, and the peach cobbler is reason enough to drive north of 635. Pro tip: order the all-you-can-eat option for a very affordable $18.99.

For Monica Pope, food is the language
of family. The German-born chef grew up in southwest Houston with the bayou as her backyard, learning the art of cooking from her Czech grandmother, who sparked Pope’s love of food. As a teenager, Pope spent two summers “studying” with her in Kansas, learning about Czech food and family recipes. Nobody else in the family felt comfortable making the traditional dishes or taking over grandmother’s role, so it fell to Pope. The budding teenage chef told a friend that she was going to open a restaurant and change the way Houston eats. Indeed, she has. Her critically acclaimed restaurants — The Quilted Toque, t’afia, Beaver’s and Sparrow Bar + Cookshop — are among those that have set a new standard for dining in Houston. Pope is the only Texas woman named a Top 10 Best New Chef by Food & Wine magazine. She was a 2007 James Beard Award nominee, was named Best Chef of 2009 at the Houston Culinary Awards, and was a contestant on season two of the Bravo television show Top Chef Masters in 2010. Award-winning Chef Monica Pope opened her first restaurant in Houston in 1992.

What started in her grandmother’s kitchen went on to Prue Leith’s School of Food and Wine in London, where Pope earned her chef ’s title. She worked in Europe and San Francisco before returning home to Houston in 1992 to open her first restaurant, The Quilted Toque. “Most of my cooking career has not been about cooking,” Pope says. “Through food, I’ve always been searching for who I am, what I’m all about and what I’m supposed to do. My career has been about telling the stories behind the food.”

local market and her restaurants, checking parties scheduled for the week, making food orders, texting instructions to her managers, answering emails and taking pictures. “Then I cook with people, and it’s awesome,” she says — clearly revealing the best part of her day. At Sparrow Bar + Cookshop, her newest restaurant, Pope creates daily menus from what is in season from local farmers and ranchers. “Ninety percent of the creative effort is already done by the farmer, cultivating and harvesting (at the right time) the food that grows well where you live.” Her digital cookbook, Eat Where Your Food Lives (available at www.ChefMonicaPope.com) aims to help the home cook with the remaining 10% effort that it takes to transform these raw ingredients into a memorable meal. She calls Houston a place of extreme opposites: a concrete jungle, a refinery coast and an air-conditioned oasis, all in one spot. At the same time, the city offers a unique, year-round growing season that produces a bounty of diverse food. For more than 13 years, she has worked to revive the true nature of Houston by supporting local farmers, ranchers and food producers, and helping found the popular Midtown Farmers Market. Pope is currently working on her first memoir entitled Eating Hope (and Other Things I’ve Had to Stomach), an insightful, poignant and humorous look at a woman’s place in the (restaurant) kitchen.
She calls her inventive cooking style “eat where your food lives.” “I’ve opened eight restaurants in 25 years. The focus has always been to change the way Houston eats — but I had to figure out what that change should be. My main challenge has always been managing the moving parts; and there are lots of moving parts in this business. Baz Luhrman talks about directing films and says it’s like ‘having 300 hands on a paintbrush.’ I can relate to that.” So what does a typical day in the life of Chef Monica Pope look like? She calls it a “clipboard life,” full of lists. She starts each day with a clean sheet, rewriting anything still remaining from the day before. Visits to the

The Country’s First Year-Round Destination Resort
Whether you’re planning to visit in their highest season of July and August for summer fun or you’re planning your next family ski trip, you can’t go wrong with Sun Valley. By Marika Flatt
Celebrating 80 larger-than-life years, the iconic Sun Valley has earned a reputation for being a stellar destination year-round. Sun Valley Resort really shines in the summer, although its beloved ski season has drawn celebrities and regular folk alike to its legendary lodges since 1936. It was Union Pacific Railroad that bought a nearly 4,000-acre family ranch and built Sun Valley Lodge and its surrounding village to draw tourists year-round. Hollywood flocked to the debut and the stars are still coming. In 2015, the little town with big fun enjoyed a complete renovation of the famed Sun Valley Lodge, keeping the rustic look of its original designer (who also crafted lodges at Yosemite and Yellowstone) but now modernized for today’s traveler.
Leaving on a Jet Plane
Sun Valley sees the second most visitors coming from the Dallas airport. There are flights out of all major Texas airports that either fly direct or through a connection like Denver or San Francisco. It’s a 20-minute shuttle ride from the airport to the resort. Or, you can fly into Boise (cheaper tickets), rent a car and drive 2.5 hours to Sun Valley Resort. Sun Valley Resort accommodates all types of visitors. There are seven homes on property for larger parties. The small Sun Valley Inn is a delightful Austrian-inspired inn, whereas Sun Valley Lodge has 108 rooms, including five celebrity suites (named after celebs who frequented the lodge such as Marilyn Monroe, Clint Eastwood and Ernest Hemingway [1]). The lodge rooms have 400+ square feet, and include a living room with a foldout sofa, a separate bedroom and renovated bathrooms [2] now triple their original size.

One evening, take the sleigh (in winter) or horse-drawn wagon (in warmer months) and ride a few miles down the road to Trail Creek Cabin. Here, you’ll be welcomed into a 1937 cabin that was once a private hideaway for writers like Hemingway, but is now a cozy restaurant. Crackling fireplaces, a full bar and comfort food await. Their famous four-course dinner pairs perfectly with a soundtrack of old country music from the likes of Alabama, The Oak Ridge Boys and Texas’ own Willie Nelson. After hiking or skiing Bald Mountain, have lunch at The Roundhouse, perched way up on the mountain with Instagramworthy views. Start with the cheese fondue to share and follow it up with a hearty roasted chicken or beef stew. If you’re feeling adventurous, pair those with a nice glass of wine or local beer. If you’re hiking or skiing Dollar Mountain, take a lunch break at Carol’s Lodge cafeteria where you can grab easy lunch items like soup, salads, wraps, burgers or a big ‘ole (Texas-sized) burrito. You’ll give your feet a nice break and fill your tummy for the afternoon of calorie burn.

way to end a day’s hiking or skiing than with a top-notch spa treatment? In a word: bliss. I recommend the popular White Cloud Massage (opt for the longer 80 minutes for $180) where you can choose one of four aromatic oils such as Reboot (lemongrass, peppermint and basil). Pools [5] There are two large pools on the resort and the Lodge pool is a delicious 100 degrees in the winter; ideal after a day of skiing. Bowling [6] Don’t miss the vintage bowling alley at Sun Valley Lodge where you can enjoy music, food and drinks, along with arcade games. Shopping and movies The Village features restaurants, boutiques and a movie theater.

Bald Mountain Pizza & Pasta can be found in the village (near the Inn) and is the ideal spot for a family to carbo-load the night before hiking or skiing. Kids will love the fried mozzarella sticks and their hearty selection of calzones and pizzas. Adults can start with an antipasto or caesar salad and then fill up on pasta favorites such as baked ziti or pasta alfredo, paired with a robust Cabernet or local beer.

Touted as the “grand dame”
of Northern Florida, Ponte Vedra Resort is the place to be if you’re looking to relax and be pampered to the background noise of a breezy oceanfront or for a fun-filled family summer beach trip. This summer haven’s a 12-hour straight shot drive from the Texas state line. (Or, you can fly direct from Houston or Dallas to Jacksonville, where you’re a 30-minute drive from Ponte Vedra Beach and the Atlantic coast.) The resort is comprised of two sister properties: Ponte Vedra Lodge & Club [1] and Ponte Vedra Inn & Club [2] (1.5 miles from each other on Ponte Vedra Blvd). The latter opened in 1928 and the former in 1989. The Inn has a vintage feel while the Lodge is more modern and spacious. With both being clubs, you’ll see local members about the properties, which adds to the ambience. Ponte Vedra Lodge & Club offers 66 oceanview suites [3], located in low-rise buildings with a charming Florida sand and surf vibe. All of the rooms in the Lodge are newly renovated, overlook the Atlantic and provide a romantic and relaxing beach view. This stretch of the beach is quite secluded and peaceful. The Lodge’s mantra is “delivering the fantasy.” And the staff is trained to say “yes” before even knowing the question. While the rooms are spacious and comfy (one of the best layouts of a king suite we’ve seen) and the beach is so inviting you’ll find it difficult to pull yourself away from its sandy embrace, do your body good and check out what else Ponte Vedra Resorts has to offer – two 18-hole golf courses, several oceanfront pools, a destination spa [4] and other beachfront activities.

blends traditional favorites with the most innovative presentations. The Innlet features an extensive wine list with selections from around the world. Try the Grouper BLT sandwich for lunch and enjoy an array of courses for dinner that might include fish of the day or steak. The Seahorse Grille (at the Inn) boasts dramatic ocean views and features an extensive wine selection paired with American fusion dishes. The décor evokes a vintage beach club with an aquarium as its centerpiece. The Golf Club (at the Inn) offers Southern favorites such as creole shrimp, mashed potatoes and guacamole salad.

Golf [5] Ponte Vedra Inn & Club has two
championship 18-hole courses, three putting greens, pitching/chipping greens, a practice bunker, complete pro shop, a teaching staff of six, and the 19th hole lounge. Designed in 1928 by famed British architect Herbert Bertram Strong, the Ocean Course is a par- 72, 6,811-yard course, with 99 strategically positioned sand bunkers. A par-70 course, the 6,022-yard Lagoon Course was co-authored by two design geniuses – Robert Trent Jones with the front nine holes in 1961, and Joe Lee with the back nine holes in 1977. In 2007, Bobby Weed fully restored the layout, including new tees, fairways and greens, new turf standards, improved irrigation and drainage, and a greatly enhanced landscape, with water as a dominant feature on 11 holes. Tennis The tennis program at Ponte Vedra Inn & Club has been rated as “one of the top adult tennis camps in the nation” by Tennis magazine, and holds the honored status as the Official Tennis Club of the ATP World Tour. Cradled between green fairways and the Atlantic Ocean, the resort features
15 Har-Tru Hydro clay courts, private teaching courts, eight courses lit for night play, shaded courtside pavilions, computerized ball machines, a courtside patio, and an oversized practice backboard. • Pools [6] At the Lodge, you’ll enjoy an adults-only oceanfront pool and a family pool with waterslide across the street at the fitness center (with a food truck at the ready during high season). At the Inn, you’ll find a family pool with waterslide, an adults-only lap pool and an outdoor spa pool. • Fitness Centers Both properties boast this amenity. Enjoy dozens of fitness classes including core & strength, pilates and Zumba and state-of-the-art gyms. You’ll also find a steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi, and a Kids’ Club (for kids up to age 12). • Ponte Vedra Spa combines peaceful surroundings and ultra-modern facilities with an impressive selection of pampering. The in-house Spa Café serves a health- conscious menu with real taste and ample portions—try the flatbread or chicken spinach wrap—located just behind the elegant marble lobby. A highlight of the spa is its outdoor hydrotherapy pool, which boasts relaxing grottos, including a standing bubbler, chaise lounge bubbler, Jacuzzi, swimmers’ treadmill and waterfall. Book a massage or facial and plan to spend a half-day. • Fat Tire Bikes [7] Rent a bike and enjoy riding around the upscale neighborhoods between the lodge and inn (1.5 miles) or ride on the beach. It’s the best way to get around. • Beach Rental Water Sports During the summer (high season runs March through August), try your skills at stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and other water activities. There’s plenty to keep the whole family active.
Travel + Leisure Magazine has named the Ponte Vedra Inn a No. 1 Family Resort and it consistently receives the AAA Five Diamond Award (15 consecutive years). It’s no wonder celebrities such as Bruce Springsteen, Jim Carey and Desmond Tutu have found relaxation at this resort. Nightly rates at both properties start at $200 and go up to $700.

The Lighthouse Lakes Paddling Trail
By Melissa Gaskill
My kayak glides down a channel through mangroves that rise on either side of me like leafy walls shutting out the rest of the world. Several yards ahead, a great blue heron lifts off, beating its large wings majestically. A couple of fish splash in the water nearby. I’m on the Lighthouse Lakes Paddling Trail, actually four loops meandering through a black mangrove estuary, sloughs and lakes. Located between Aransas Pass and Port Aransas, it covers part of Redfish Bay, a State Scientific Area protecting five species of seagrass. Launch points at Lighthouse Lakes Park on Texas Hwy 361, south of Aransas Pass, provide easy access to marked loops of 1.25, 5, 6.7 and 6.8 miles. Redfish Loop, the longest route, winds closest to the circa-1857, recently restored and photogenic Lydia Ann Lighthouse, an important navigation aid in the Civil War.
To avoid getting lost in the mangrove maze, pick up a laminated trail map (see the website for places to find it) or book a guided trip with Coastal Bend Kayak in Aransas Pass (all gear provided). Price per person varies from $40 to $125 per person depending on the size of your group. Out here, I experience the Texas coast as it once was — just the wind, water, and wildlife. Getting lost might not be such a bad idea. LIGHTHOUSE LAKES PADDLING TRAIL | STATE HWY 361 TPWD.TEXAS.GOV

The historic Lydia Ann Lighthouse at sunset.
The mangroves provide shelter from the wind, leaving the shallow waters calm and perfect for leisurely paddling. In addition to herons, I’ve spotted goofy pelicans and bright-pink roseate spoonbills. In the more open seagrass beds and flats, or lakes, I sometimes see spotted seatrout and flounder, and other paddlers fishing for these or other fish. Some 400 dolphin call this area home and I’ve encountered them occasionally when crossing the channel.

The myriad of health benefits to floating in saline water include helping with sore muscles to depression and anxiety. Liquid's salt water is three times as salty as The Dead Sea and approximately 94 degrees. You really have to experience it for yourself, but let us set the scene. Schedule an appointment (much like getting a massage) for 60 or 90 minutes. You’re led back to your private room where there’s a shower and one of six pods filled with 10 inches of saline water. Shower off, put in your wax earplugs and climb into your private pod—in the nude, preferably. You can close the lid and choose your lighting and optional music. Then, you float.

Beat the Heat Workout Tips As told to Leeza Dennis Avoid heat exhaustion by hydrating regularly. Drink water steadily throughout the day, during training and after training. To remind yourself, keep a refillable water bottle with you at all times. And plan on training early or late, when it’s cooler.
1
Replace electrolytes after your workout, but don’t drink electrolytedense beverages in place of water. During exercise, you sweat--losing water and electrolytes--as your body regulates your temperature. It’s important to replace what the body is losing to maintain a balance of both temperature and nutrients, which in turn improves performance.
Hot yoga–known as Bikram–has taken the fitness world by storm. Pure Bikram Yoga has four locations around Austin and heats up bodies on a daily basis. Get ready for a hot room (105 degrees, although some classes are a cool 95 degrees) and hot bodies doing hot poses. The 26-pose sequence is designed to work every part of your body: muscles, circulatory system, even the brain stem. It’s a workout like no other, burning hundreds of calories in a 90-minute class. And, as they say at Pure, “No flexibility required.”—MF
2
Avoid “fat burners” and other b o d y t e m p e rat u r e - i n c r e a s i n g supplements. Your normal daily activity plus the Texas heat is more than enough to increase your core temperature. Fat burners only increase the need for hydration and the likelihood of heat exhaustion.

Diving In Artist’s work refreshes body and soul By Julie Bonnin In Karen Landrigan’s paintings, ocean, air and sky dissolve into each other as a female swimmer exudes strength and focus. There’s a sense of mastery, solitude and resolve in the swimmers who populate her paintings, but also the delicious resistance of a body in water, the refreshing sense of washing away the superfluous. Her paintings invite the viewer to dive in, but the Houston artist didn’t have a choice. After a successful career in the corporate world, she suffered a massive stroke in July 2012 at the age of 50. Straddling a line between life and death, and unable to express herself for many months, she eventually became well enough to return home. Life wasn’t the same, and she found she needed a reason to fight so hard to live. “I’m a full bore girl,” says Landrigan, whose fit physique matches that of the figure in her paintings. She initially ignored a mentor’s advice to start painting, but when she finally decided to take his advice, she picked up the biggest canvas she could fit in her car and began a series of award-winning acrylic paintings with titles such as “Soaring,” “Roaring,” “Emerging,” and “Breathing.”
"Longing" and "Soaring" (below) are from Houston-based artist Karen Landrigan's series entitled "I Have Something to Say."
The paintings, full-color explorations and affirmations, seem to especially resonate with people who have been through similar life-changing crises, Landrigan says.
Artwork courtesy of Karen Landrigan
“I like the interaction between water and air, clouds to water to waves,” she says of her work. “It allows the story to change. It’s almost transparent in places. Am I here, or am I not?” Landrigan is an elected member of the Society for Canadian Artists, and she creates whimsical sketches and hand-made sterling silver jewelry, as well as her award-winning paintings. Born on the island of Newfoundland, Canada, her earliest and fondest memories include water, and she still swims five days a week. KARENLANDRIGAN.COM

Michael Gladis is Feeding the Beast
By Nancy Miller Barton
Texas Lifestyle Magazine: Do you have a favorite Texas pastime?
Michael Gladis: My dad's best friend in
Houston won the Houston Chili cook-off at one point. When we moved away, my dad asked if we could use his recipe to compete up North. We'd cook in these Connecticut chili cook-offs with a recipe that had won in Houston, (but) we never even placed! Not once. That being said, I've developed my own chili recipe, using that one as a base, and won some tiny cookoffs of my own.
Erin Cummings and Michael Gladis (pictured right, above), actors with Texas roots, turn up on the streets of New York for the new AMC series, "Feed the Beast."
W
hether eager ad-man or mob-man dubbed “The Tooth Fairy,” actor and native Texan Michael Gladis says, “any character they pay me to play” is a favorite. Gladis is making a switch this summer from copywriter Paul Kinsey on AMC's "Mad Men" to a role in the network's latest, "Feed the Beast." And what a beast. His character— Patrick Woichik—earns his nickname, Tooth Fairy, because of a fondness for pulling teeth. Gladis was born in Houston but the family moved east when he was about three-months-old. “I’m a Texan by birth, New Englander by upbringing.”
I've served my chili to many a Texan who have not only approved but also claimed it was the best they'd ever had. And I'm aiming to take a shot at a bigger cook-off sometime soon. So yeah, cooking a pot of chili (and drinking some cold beers along with it) is definitely my favorite Texas pastime.
TLM: What was the most difficult Mad Men episode for you?
MG: The episode "Christmas Waltz" where I
came back as a Hare Krishna. Having to shave my head... and coming back to that world, in such a weird way... it was very surreal. I didn't know if I could do it, or if it would just be too weird or forced. Everyone on the show was really welcoming and people have told me they really enjoyed the episode.

fine-dining restaurant "food porn,” half mob underworld. My character is currently in the latter world, but longs to be in the former. They call him the "Tooth Fairy" because ... well, you'll find out why in the first episode … he's not the kind of Tooth Fairy you want hovering over your bed at night, I'll tell you that. He's going to be one of my favorite characters ever, though.

Close Up with Sean Patrick Flanery M
ost folks know Sean Patrick Flanery as a versatile actor – from his early days in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, through such popular films as Boondock Saints and Powder. The Texasraised actor has just penned his first novel, Jane Two, an evocative, semi-autobiographical look back at his youth in Sugar Land, Texas.
Texas Lifestyle Magazine: How long did you have the idea for writing this novel?
incredibly arrogant because I wrote it... I wrote the screenplay before I wrote the book, to be honest.
Sean Patrick Flanery: The desire
TLM: You've lived in L.A. for years. Do
to put pen to paper [began] around 1997. I took two years off to focus on it. You learn a lot about yourself, opening an immense closet.
TLM: What are the differences between interpreting a character as an actor, and creating one as a writer?
SPF: The tools you have
are completely different, but the method is exactly the same. As both an actor and a writer you want brevity and concision. In a film, if an actor's really good, he can cut lines out because he can translate feeling with no words at all. Writing is very different. It's a very strategic type of elimination.
TLM: Your depiction of
family life in a small Texas town is remarkably on-target.
SPF: When I look back on my life, I wasn't
raised with a lot. But, I wanted for nothing. My folks gave me a wealth of tools to pursue and attempt to achieve anything in the world.
TLM: Do you have plans to make Jane Two into a movie?
Photos by John Schell
By Steven Uhler
SPF: I do. I know an actor writing a book is accompanied by a handful of eye-rolls. So my first goal is to get a couple of people to read it. I think it would play on the screen as a wonderful story. I know that sounds
you still carry a lot of Texas in you?
SPF: So much so that I've been scouring
Zillow to bring my family back to Houston. I want my kids to be raised the way I was raised, in the same culture. I haven't been able to find that in LA.
TLM: But as you point out in the book, there are some things you can go back to and other things you can't.
SPF: I think I'm going to
find the things that are important. I'll have a great family wherever I land, but Texas is closer to the heart.
TLM: Are you still in touch
with your Boondock Saints co-star, Norman Reedus? He's become such a megastar with Walking Dead.
SPF: I speak to him at least once a week.
I knew him before we did Boondock Saints. I've never seen that level of success come to someone and have it change them less. He's a genuinely wonderful cat. (Editor’s note: Reedus does the intro on Flanery’s book trailer.)
TLM: What are the odds of a third Boondock Saints film?
SPF: I wouldn't bet against it. The script is
written. It's just a matter of putting all the pieces together and getting [us] lined up.

A storm approaches. It’s the middle of SXSW 2016, and the
Texas weather has decided to throw its classic curve ball into the festivities. Lightning streaks the sky and the temperature has dropped 30 degrees in the span of a single hour. But, behind a stage on Rainey Street, we’re in the calm center of the storm with Carla Gugino ("Spin City," "Sin City," "San Andreas") and Luke Wilson, Gugino’s co-star in the upcoming Showtime series, “Roadies." And the two stars are playing off one another like Hepburn and Grant as they wait to take the stage and introduce one of this year’s most sought-after SXSW headliners. Theirs is the chemistry that all television and film productions seek, the seamless interaction between two leads that every plot tries to manifest. It’s the lightning cracking outside the building, bottled up and put on display. Something is definitely in the air.

The duo is in town to support their new series in an innovative way. The show, “Roadies,” focuses on the stories and souls that support and enable the live music tours that Austin and SXSW have come to treasure. Produced by J.J. Abrams and overseen by “Almost Famous” director Cameron Crowe, the plot of the show picks up where “Almost Famous” left off, focusing on the people who make magic possible, night after night, from behind the scenes of rock and roll.
director who is intimately familiar with the subject matter—is at the helm; and the respect for his craft is not lost on either of the stars. “He creates a magical environment,” Gugino says. “One of the keys to something working on a film or television [set] is creating an environment in which creativity can happen, and he does that in an amazing way.” They are getting ready to take the stage, both literally and figuratively, and the crowd and the storm and the lights are all waiting in anticipation. The audience, both in front of the stage and in front of their televisions, is waiting to see if they can capture something electric, something magical and something worthy of rock and roll, itself. It’s time to raise the curtain and see what the “Roadies” have in store.

on June 26 at 10 p.m. CST.
To celebrate the untold story of these roadies, Gugino and Wilson were in Austin to play host to the “Roadies House,” a SXSW event with a significant twist. Instead of the “talent” receiving the lush treatment, all of the roadies working SXSW are the VIPs. The TV show is more than a gig for the pair. It’s a labor of love, and their tour manager and production manager parts have been transcendent for both of them. These two, and hopefully audiences everywhere, are fascinated by the roles and the world the show reveals. “Because of Cameron’s connections, I was able to talk to Fleetwood Mac’s tour manager and the Eagles’ tour manager," says Wilson. "And, like Carla, I have friends that are on band crews.” "When you get to talk to the people behind the scenes, there are the stories of tour buses missing and finding the driver on a binge, two states over," adds Gugino. " That’s rock and roll for you.” The show seems poised for success. It helps that Crowe—a seasoned
