Tournament Recap April 1-7, 2013 TPC San Antonio - AT&T Oaks Course

It’s pretty special to be sitting here beside this trophy. I know it’s a famous tournament, and to come here and play the way I did today and have my name on it beside all these other great names, it means a lot.

Tournament Recap The 2013 Valero Texas Open as a whole saw one of the most successful and exciting tournaments in its rich 91-year history with bigger crowds, a strong competitive field and a great champion in Martin Laird. Together with the Benefit for Children, we raised $10 million for charity and will positively impact hundreds of worthy causes! It was a week to remember for the players, corporate sponsors, volunteers, patrons and certainly for Laird. In an effort to help you reflect on this year’s tournament and prepare for 2014, we have assembled these highlights to recap another special year of the Valero Texas Open.

Champion’s Recap With a high-caliber player field marching into Sunday, the gallery was excited to see PGA TOUR stars battle it out for one of the heaviest trophies on the PGA TOUR. Rory McIlroy fought on the heels of Martin Laird until the last putt dropped. But it was Laird that won and earned his third career PGA TOUR victory at the age of 30 years, 3 months and nine days in his 134th career start on TOUR. He previously won the 2009 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and 2011 Arnold Palmer Invitational. With his win, Laird moved inside the top-20 in the FedExCup standings to No. 18. I know how good Rory is, but it doesn’t matter if it’s Rory or Jim (Furyk) or Billy (Horschel), if someone’s behind me making birdies like they were, I know I’ve got to keep making birdies” Laird said. “ That was a pretty strong leaderboard at the top there. I tried to stay aggressive all day. I played my best golf when I play aggressive, and I just tried to play that way all the way through the 18th hole today and not change my game plan and it paid off.

In the midst of what had been a challenging season, the Valero Texas Open marked Laird’s ninth start of the year. He had missed four cuts, three of which were consecutive, and failed to make it to the weekend at the Shell Houston Open. Prior to winning the Valero Texas Open, Laird’s best finish was a T34 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Laird birdied his last three holes Sunday to tie the TPC San Antonio (AT&T Oaks Course) course record with a 9-under 63 to win by two strokes over McIlroy. With his win in San Antonio, Laird extends his PGA TOUR exempt status through 2015 and earned the final spot in the 2013 Masters Tournament. Laird became the first player since Johnson Wagner to earn the final spot into the Masters by virtue of a win the week

before (2008 Shell Houston Open). Laird became the seventh player to win in his 30s in 2013; and just the third internationalborn player since 1970 to win the Valero Texas Open (Adam Scott/2010, Nick Price/1992). I love it here” Laird said. “The crowds this week have been fantastic. Everyone makes you feel like you’re at home. It’s kind of weird because everyone thanks you for coming here to play the tournament. They’ve got it backwards. It should be us thanking them. You don’t get that every week where people are thanking you for coming to the tournament. So it’s obviously a special place.

CHARITY

SPECTATOR ATTENDANCE

The Valero Texas Open and Benefit for Children Golf Classic together raised a record $10 million for children’s charities – shattering the previous record of $9 million, raised each of the past two years. Through its history, the Texas Open has raised $86 million for charities – $81.5 million of that since 2002, when Valero became the tournament’s title sponsor. The tournament has been ranked #1 seven out of the last eight years on the PGA TOUR charitable leaderboard.

Attendance increased 200% from 2012

Funds were raised through Valero Texas Open sponsorships combined with the Valero Benefit for Children Golf Classic – a golf tournament in which a record 2,400 participants played on Monday, April 8 at 11 of San Antonio’s premier golf courses. For the first time ever, all Benefit for Children sponsorships were sold out.

Gate Sales Increased 590% from 2012

Concessions Increased 39% from 2012

The Valero Texas Open also raised charitable dollars through its pro-am golf tournaments, the Birdies for Charity program in which nonprofit organizations solicit pledges for every birdie made during tournament week, and the Chip In for Schools program, which allows schools to sell discounted tournament tickets and keep all the proceeds. The record fundraising total just highlights what a tremendous tournament it was, said Joe Gorder, President & COO of Valero Energy Corporation and Chair of the 2013 Valero Texas Open. “We had an excellent field of players, and the position we had the week before the Masters, as well as the new leadership of the Valero Texas Open, generated a lot of excitement about the tournament.
