alling the move a “game-changer,” Dow Chemical Co. officials announced Thursday that Texas Operations is the site for a new ethylene production plant that will bring thousands of jobs to Brazoria County. “You’re probably going to see a bunch of Dow people walking around with a smile on,” said Earl Shipp, Dow Texas Operations site leader. This new plant is a big win, not only for Dow Texas Operations, but for the Dow plants on the Gulf Coast, he said. Officials also announced a new AgroSciences plant to produce components used in Dow’s new herbicide, Enlist Duo. An audience of business leaders, local representatives and elected officials cheered during the speeches from Dow Chemical CEO Andrew Liveris, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Texas Lt. Gov. FREEPORT — As Dow Chemical Co. officials announced the new ethylene production plant, representing a $1.7 billion investment, they thanked plenty of local and state officials for helping to bring it to Brazoria County. City, county and state governments all provided incentives and support to the proPAYNE ject, making Freeport an easy pick for the plant, officials said. “I know when I get red carpet and when I get red tape,” said Andrew Liveris, Dow Chemical president, CEO and chairman. “I get red carpet in the state of Texas.” Two of the biggest incentives for Dow were Brazoria County Commissioners’ 100 percent, 10-year tax abatement and the Texas Enterprise

ANGLETON — As gasoline prices continued to climb over the past several months, Angleton ISD’s fuel budget consequently dwindled, school officials said. The school district’s board of trustees maneuvered $150,000 into its fuel budget Tuesday to continue running school buses for the remainder of the school year, said Superintendent Pat Montgomery. The school district receives a fuel delivery about every three weeks, according to school documents. A fuel delivery at the beginning of the month depleted this year’s $280,000 fuel budget, Assistant Superintendent of Operations Steve Davis wrote in a letter to the board. “Fuel prices go up,” Montgomery said. “You always expect it to go up.” Over the past five months, Houston-area gasoline and diesel prices have increased by about 80 cents, according

FREEPORT — Council will take $23,000 less for sale of a waterfront tract of land, provided the buyer will put the difference between his two bids toward beautification. Lewis Henry Sumlin Lewis Henry Sumlin, 92, of Lake Jackson died in his sleep on April 17, 2012. Lewis was born on April 9, 1920 to William R. Sumlin and Artelia Pirkle Sumlin in Sibley, La. He was the youngest of four children. Upon graduating from Sibley High School in 1938, he moved to South Houston where he worked for the HL&P Co. In 1940 he moved to Freeport and joined the Dow Chemical Company at Power 1. He continued work in Energy systems until retiring on April 30, 1982. Fight with girlfriend leads to arrest

Less than two weeks after spending three and a half months in the Brazoria County jail on the same charge, Philip Wade Ellison, 26, was arrested at 4 p.m. Wednesday and charged with assault-family violence causing bodily injury with a previous conviction, a third-degree felony. Police were called to a motel in the 600 block of Highway 288-B at 10 p.m. Tuesday in response to a disturbance, Officer Belinda Rickman said. There, they found a woman who had a golfball-sized knot on her cheek below her left eye, and bruises on her shoulders, she said. The woman, the same one whose head Ellison was accused of pushing into a kitchen countertop in December, refused to press charges against him, Rickman said, so the department filed them on her behalf. Police asked that he come by the police station, where he was arrested Wednesday without incident. He was ordered held in the Clute jail until this morning, when he either will be transferred to the Brazoria County jail, or can post a $25,000 bond. SYNTHETIC MARIJUANA FOUND: A resource officer was summoned to a locker bank at Brazoswood High School at 10 a.m. Tuesday by an assistant principal in order to document his finding about 2 grams of synthetic marijuana in an otherwise empty locker. A coach and other witnesses alerted the assistant principal after seeing a student put the contraband in the locker.

Bolton questioned the reason for the city’s purchase of the property in 2006 and why it never was developed. “I wasn’t there when they purchased it, but the information we’ve revealed was that it was purchased for economic waterfront development,” Pynes said. “There was no specific plan. They just wanted to support growth.” Building the waterfront home would meet those requirements, he said. Woodring plans to begin bulkheading the waterfront and building a slightly elevated, traditional-style home, Pynes said. The total improvement value will be about $500,000. Woodring’s plan is to complete the development by June 2013, but he says it will be done no later than October 2013, Pynes said. “This really is a great opportunity for new development in Freeport,” Pynes said. “Now we have a good investment and someone paying taxes on a piece of land that has otherwise been empty for years.”

Michelle Kent along with Mayor Norma Garcia voted in favor of the development. Nicolasa Mireles and Fred Bolton voted in opposition. Council authorized the land to the right of the Locust Street entrance to the Second Street boat ramp be published for sale or development after an interested builder requested it, Pynes said. “We really need some development down there to push other people to build,” Barbree said. A month after publishing the sale notice, the city had received only two bids, Pynes said — both from Woodring. “He said he would be willing to use the difference — and guarantee by providing receipts — to put toward visual improvement such as palm trees and other vegetation,” Pynes said. “Things that could be seen from both on land and from the water.” The city acquired part of the land in 2006, the other a year later, City Attorney Wallace Shaw said. Freeport man dies from fall By MICHAEL FREEMAN michael.freeman@thefacts.com

ANGLETON — A Freeport man died Thursday shortly after falling 25 feet through a roof he was working on, police said. Carlos Cuellar, 51, of Freeport was pronounced dead at 11:36 a.m. at the Angleton Danbury Medical Center, according to police reports. Cuellar was working on renovating a building in the 500 block of North Downing when he stepped on a fiberglass panel on the roof, police said. “He stepped on the fiberglass, and he fell through,” Assistant Chief of Police Katherine Davis said. Cuellar dropped about 25 to 30 feet to the concrete floor, Davis said. Cuellar was laying face-down on the floor and had lost a significant amount of blood when officers arrived shortly before 11 a.m., according to police reports. Police believe Cuellar broke his neck and did not live long after the fall, Davis said. He was taken to Angleton Danbury Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His body was sent to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, police reports state. Cuellar’s family was unable to be reached for comment Thursday. The vacant building Cuellar was working on used to be an auto shop and then a game room, Davis said. She did not know for what purpose the building is being renovated. If you can see where the nest is and can safely reach it, try putting the baby back in the nest. It is not true parent birds will reject a baby if a human has touched it. In most cases, the parent is somewhere nearby watching and will see that the baby is back in the nest. They will return to feed it right on schedule. If you can’t return the chick to the nest, the bird has been injured or is wet or cold, it needs to be rescued. In addition, any bird (adult, fledgling or nestling) that has been attacked by a cat needs to be rescued whether there is visible injury or not. If you can’t safely reach the nest, you should put the baby in a small plastic container lined with paper towels and then put the plastic

container in a box. Put the box somewhere safe from children and pets and call a rehabilitator immediately. Do not give the baby any water or food unless instructed to by a rehabilitator. In our area, Gulf Coast Wildlife Rescue handles all injured and orphaned birds. You can call them at 979849-0184. It’s a great time to experience the miracle of life through birds nesting and eggs hatching, but please do it from a distance. Disturbing birds while nesting or the nests themselves is illegal. A fund created by the Texas Legislature at the request of Gov. Rick Perry in 2003, the Texas Enterprise Fund is offered to businesses considering a site in Texas and another site out of state. Perry nicknamed the Texas Enterprise Fund the “deal-closing fund” because it has been successful in bringing businesses to Texas, he said. “It’s the last piece of the puzzle that gets put in place,” Perry said. Dow Texas Operations was in competition with a Louisiana site for the ethylene cracker. “We wouldn’t be here without the Texas Enterprise Fund,” Liveris said. “It’s a deal maker.” Calling Perry a “friend of business and economic development,” Shipp said Dow’s decision to build this large operation in Freeport was a result of Perry’s policies.

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS The monetary benefits were helpful, but community support for the project also made a big difference, Shipp said. The Brazosport Area Chamber of Commerce wrote a “really impactful letter” at the beginning of the competition that had a great influence, Shipp said. It included business leaders throwing their full support behind the project. “Clearly this community supports a big investment,” he said. Feedback on the chamber’s influence was good to hear, said Robyn Cochran, Brazosport Area Chamber of Commerce chairwoman. “It’s phenomenal,” she said. The plant will do so much for the local economy, she said. Groups like Brazosport College, the Velasco Drainage District, The Economic Development Alliance for Brazoria County and Port Freeport also got behind the project, further influencing the decision to bring it to Freeport, Shipp said. “All those things happened before the Texas Enterprise Fund,” Shipp said. The $1 million grant helped seal the deal, he said.

In March, county commissioners approved the record-breaking tax abatement for Dow worth $54 million over 10 years. It was the first time the county awarded a 10-year tax abatement, Commissioner Donald “Dude” Payne said. Commissioners have been asked to approve such a lengthy tax break in the past, but decided to reserve such a big measure for a big project. The ethylene cracker was just the type of project the county was waiting for, Payne said. Payne attended the conference announcing the ethylene production plant Thursday morning. “It’s the best news announced since I’ve been a county commissioner,” Payne said. The plant not only will create hundreds of jobs at Dow Texas Operations in a few years, but for each new Dow job, several more will be created in the community to support these new residents, he said. Plus, the presence of these new plants will make it more likely for Dow Texas Operations to get more facilities in the future, he said. The ethylene cracker project was made possible by the increased supply of natural gas in the United States, making the United States an attractive place to build new plants, officials said. With natural gas prices decreasing, Dow Chemical now easily can produce ethylene. This project will bring 2,000 construction jobs at the peak of construction. Adding the propylene plant announced last year and the AgroSciences project, the number more than doubles, Liveris said. He estimates the projects — combined with other Dow projects planned in the United States — will create more than 35,000 jobs within the U.S. economy. “We’re thinking American, and that’s what is so exciting about it,” McConnell said. In addition to the ethylene cracker, propylene production and AgroSciences plant, a chlorine plant already is under construction. In all, these new facilities are expected to create 330 new, permanent jobs. “Any time this community is doing well, it means our business and our families are doing well,” said Brian Melass, co-owner of Killum Pest Control. After attending the announcement, Melass said he was excited about the future of the Brazosport area. “It’s a great day to be a resident of Freeport and our area,” Freeport City Manger Jeff Pynes said. Dow is a great community partner, he said.

ETHYLENE CRACKER Just a few years ago, the cost of energy feedstocks was pushing Dow out of the U.S. market, and the company was in the process of investing elsewhere, Liveris said. But the recent surplus of shale gas kept Dow’s operations focused in America. “The shale gale arrived,” Liveris said. Shale, or natural, gas has become available in abundance thanks to the use of hydraulic fracturing — or fracking — and its presence in Texas has caused quite a bit of economic development in recent months. For the past nine months, Dow officials have been working on a plan to take advantage of the large supply, Shipp said. Dow can use shale gas by turning it into ethylene, which then can be turned into products that can be used in everyone’s lives, Liveris said. An ethylene cracker takes natural gas and other feedstocks and “cracks” them into the building blocks needed to produce products like plastic. While Dow Chemical already has two other sites making ethylene, the company doesn’t currently make enough for its needs and has to purchase some elsewhere, Shipp said. Producing ethylene, one

It also is a major investment in the area. An ethylene plant typically lasts 40 years and will spawn other facilities, Shipp said. “I’m confident Dow (Texas Operations) can now compete for other plants,” he said. Set to be operational in 2017, the ethylene production plant will create 150 permanent jobs.

AGROSCIENCES PLANT To support its new Enlist Weed Control System, Dow AgroSciences will build a plant to help produce 2,4D choline, a key component of the company’s Enlist Duo herbicide. “It’s a game-changer in the context of new technology,” Liveris said. Enlist Duo is a new Dow product used for row crops, Shipp said. The product is environmentally friendly and will help farmers control weeds in their fields, he said. Dow Texas Operations

will produce the raw material for the herbicide and ship it to Michigan, where Dow has a plant to make the final product, Shipp said. The project is set to be complete in late 2014 or early 2015, Shipp said. It will create 10 new jobs at Dow Texas Operations. Placing the AgroSciences plant in Freeport is directly related to the presence of the chlorine plant under construction, he said.

People need only drive by Dow Texas Operations and look for the large cranes to see where the chlorine plant will be when completed next year. By the end of this decade, Dow Texas Operations will be producing propylene, chlorine and ethylene, three of Dow Chemical Co.’s major feedstocks, Shipp said. The on-site production of these feedstocks likely will bring more plants, he said. Dow Texas Operations in Freeport is Dow’s largest integrated manufacturing site worldwide and the largest singlecompany chemical complex in North America. With 4,200 employees and 3,000 contractors on site daily, Dow Texas Operations manufactures 44 percent of Dow products sold in the United States and more than 20 percent of Dow products sold globally.

Though the ethylene and AgroSciences plants are Dow Texas Operations’ newest expansion, the site already was growing. Dow officials announced in April 2011 they were building a new propylene plant set to be completed in 2015. This project is expected to bring 120 new, permanent jobs to Dow Texas Operations. The economy needs no conductor e spend too much time waiting for orders — and money — from Washington. The collapse of the housing bubble gave politicians a license to do what they wanted to do all along: spend. The usual checks on extravagance, weak as they are, were washed away. Budgets? We’ll worry about that later. Inflation? We’ll worry about that later. A true free market doesn’t require much. It’s not like an orchestra in need of a conductor. What it needs is property rights, so no one can take your stuff. Then people trade property to their mutual advantage. Resources move around without the need for a central, coercive government telling people which resources should go where — or telling them they must get permission to do what they think is advantageous. Given time, an economy, unless crippled by further government intervention, will regenerate itself. But during the recession, Keynesians in the administration said government had to “jump-start” the economy because businesses weren’t hiring. An economy, however, is not a machine that needs jumpstarting. It is people who have objectives they want to achieve. If the economy continues to recover, President Barack Obama will claim he caused that. It wouldn’t be the first time a “leader” ran in front of a crowd and claimed to have

led the way. But politicians don’t deserve credit for what free people do. Despite politicians’ talk of “giving” money to this or that, government has no money of its own. It has to take it from the private sector. Grabbing those scarce resources stifles the real economy. One of the most important questions in politics should be: “Would the private sector have done better things with that money?” A healthy economy does not just create jobs of any kind, it creates productive jobs. The pharaohs of ancient Egypt created jobs building pyramids, but who knows how much better the lives of ancient Egyptians might have been had they been free to engage in other work? They would all have had better housing, more food or snazzier headdresses. Even as smart a person as economist John Maynard Keynes seemed to forget about that when he wrote in his “General Theory” back in 1936, “Pyramid-building, earthquakes, even wars may serve to increase wealth.” By that logic, government could create full employment tomorrow by outlawing machines. Now, sure, after a war or earthquake, there’s plenty of construction to be done. After the Haitian earthquake, Nancy Pelosi said, “I think that this can be an opportunity for a real boom economy in Haiti.” New York Times columnist Paul Krugman made a similar error. On CNN, he said if “space aliens were planning to attack and we needed a massive buildup to counter the space alien threat ... this slump would be over in 18 months.” Before that, he said the 9/11 attacks would be good for the economy. Isn’t it obvious that without a catastrophe those same workers and resources could have done productive work — with the overall standard of living higher as a result? There is something wrong with mainstream politics and economics when some of its most respected practitioners overlook this point. People favor government projects because they notice the seen, not the unseen. Creating jobs is not difficult for government. What is difficult is creating jobs that produce wealth. The private sector does that.

Texas simply spectators in presidential campaign fter the last census count our Republican lawmakers in the Texas Legislature gerrymandered the various Congressional districts — we gained four seats — so grotesquely as to make even Tom DeLay jealous. The Dems objected, the federal court in San Antonio overruled the redistricting, then the U.S. Supreme Court overruled that lower court decision. So our primaries were moved from March, when they might have meant something, to late May when they are meaningless. However, there is good news, which I shall get to in a moment. First, is anybody else already tired of the 2012 presidential campaigns? And Rahm Emanuel hasn’t even thrown out the first epithet to start the general elections. By all accounts, we will witness the most intense and expensive political campaigns ever run. Mitt Romney is trying to raise $800 million, which he probably could find under his sofa cushions, plus another $200 million from other sources. President Obama is allegedly trying to raise a cool $1 billion. For the first time we have faceless Super PACs such as Restore Our Future, Americans for Prosperity and American Crossroads — totally meaningless names. As of April 12, 421 PACs reported collecting almost $160 million, with much more to come. As the campaigns heat up we can expect to see ads from Patriots for a More Patriotic Nation, Good People Doing Gooder. The Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson are being wooed, if they haven’t already written more million-dollar checks. Then we have the Republican and Democratic national committees’ fundraisers. Let’s all move to New Zealand until after the November elections. Until then, we might consider what is not going to happen: George W. Bush is not going to campaign. He is MIA. We can only wonder what TV time spot the GOPers will give W for his speech at their national convention. Probably 3 to 3:30. That’s a.m., right after Sheriff Joe Arpaio from Phoenix and just before the salute to the victims of the Johnstown Flood (for which, suspiciously, Obama has never denied responsibility). Just wait till the general election. Already smutty bumper stickers are being printed by both sides, ugly and untrue rumors are being hatched for emails, tweets and Twitters. Be prepared to read and hear some of the most outlandish untruths, which now can be spread with lightning speed. Polls show we don’t like negative political campaigning. Polls also show the mud-slinging works every time. Thus polls show we’re a bunch of bloody hypocrites. OK, now for the good news: Texas doesn’t have a dog in this fight. Both parties know Texas will go for the Republican candidate if he were Aaron Burr. We have a winner-take-all policy for our votes in the Electoral College, so not a single ballot will be for Obama even if he gets 49.999 percent of the popular vote. Neither candidate will waste a dime or a minute campaigning here. For Texans, this upcoming presidential contest is a spectator sport. Do they have elections in New Zealand?

Take the East cards in this deal. Your partner leads the spade jack against four hearts. How would you plan the defense? North, because of that potentially valuable club singleton, was worth a raise to 2 1/2 hearts. South might have dabbled for a slam, but the singleton in his partner’s first-bid suit was a drawback. Often the less said to the defenders, the better. Note also that South’s

immediate jump to four hearts indicated at least a five-card suit. North might have raised with only three-card support, with, for example, a minimum 1-3-5-4 hand. If South had only four hearts, he would have jumped to three no-trump (or made another bid that was forcing). Then North, with four hearts, would have corrected back to game in that suit. Since the spade 10 is on

the board, you know West has led a singleton spade or high from a doubleton — but which? Think back to the bidding. If the lead is a singleton, South has K-Q-8-54 of spades. ANGLETON — With installation of smart meters in southern Brazoria County quickly approaching, the Economic Development Alliance for Brazoria County took some time to learn the facts about the higher-tech electronic devices. CenterPoint Energy representative Deryl Tumlinson talked to Alliance members at their quarterly membership meeting Tuesday about the new meters, which will take the place of the round, spinning-wheel meters outside southern Brazoria County homes in the next several weeks. “Electricity is a big deal,” said Robert Worley, Alliance CEO. How electricity is delivered matters to a lot of people in the area, he said. CenterPoint Energy installed a test of the smart meters in 2007 and received state approval for them in 2008, Tumlinson said. They began to be installed in the CenterPoint Energy’s service area in 2009, he said. Things really began moving after the U.S. Department of Energy gave CenterPoint a $200 million investment grant, which reduced the company’s length of surcharge to its customers to pay for the meters, Tumlinson said. Now they plan to complete the transition by the end of May, he said.

Smart meters are electronic devices that will do away with the need for a meter reader to stop by homes and businesses to check electricity usage. Instead, they automatically will send the usage to CenterPoint offices on a regular basis. This not only has some cost-saving benefits for CenterPoint Energy, but will be a big benefit for electric customers, Tumlinson said. Smart meters provide outage information to CenterPoint officials, meaning residents no longer will have to call the power company to tell them the power is out, he said. Home and business owners also will be able to go to smartmetertexas.com to check their energy use. Not only will residents be able to see how much electricity they used in a day, but in 15-minute increments, Tumlinson said. This feedback will help them make wiser choices about their power, he said. The almost instant feedback also will allow CenterPoint to monitor how much load is on a transformer and when it needs to be replaced before it fails and causes an outage, Tumlinson said.

Northern Brazoria County already has moved to smart meters, and southern Brazoria County residents should expect the change in four to six weeks, Tumlinson said. “I had one installed two months ago,” said Bruce Broberg, chairman of the Alliance. It has been very helpful to go to the website and see when electricity is being used during the day, he said. “It’s a great tool,” he said. Workers will install a door hanger on the front door to inform people the change will be made soon, and customers should have no more than a fiveminute power outage during the switch, he said. All CenterPoint workers have to do is pull out the old meter and plug in the new one, he said. The meters are paid for through a $3 per month surcharge customers have been paying since 2009, Tumlinson said. The extra charge will end in 2016. CenterPoint Energy customers in southern Brazoria County who should expect a new smart meter live in Lake Jackson, Clute, Richwood, Jones Creek, Freeport, Surfside Beach, Quintana and some surrounding areas.

Playing in a couples tournament with his wife Phyllis has wonderful advantages. “She brings it,” he said. “She plays from the women’s tees, and she has a real big handicap, so she’s a great partner to have.” Reg and Phyllis have participated in several of the Jack and Jill Tournaments at The Wilderness in Lake Jackson. He’s unsure if they can attend the sixth installment Saturday and Sunday, but the past experiences have been different than other events to say the least. “It’s a man and woman combo, which is real unusual for a golf tournament. Typically it’s two guys,” Reg said. “That’s really what makes it unique.” Using handicap indexes, couples will be divided into two flights. The first round will be a 1 p.m. shotgun start of best ball Saturday, and Sunday will be a scramble with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The top three teams from each flight will be awarded prizes. Lunch will be served Saturday and Sunday, with a dinner mixer after Saturday’s round. Special competitions include holes in one and closest to the pin. “They have a lot of fun,” organizer Debby Koldus said. “It’s a great little gettogether and a lot of people come back year after year.” People come in from San Antonio, Houston, Corpus Christi and other surrounding areas. “It’s wonderful,” Reg Aplin said. “It’s competitive, the teams are competitive. The men and the women are competitive. It’s a fun thing.” AUSTIN BAYOU: The seventh annual Angleton/Danbury Scholarship Golf Tournament will be at 9 a.m. April 28 at the Austin Bayou Golf Course. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Pat Summitt was relaxed, smiling and even cracking jokes — looking and sounding totally at peace knowing she will never coach her beloved Tennessee Lady Vols again. The Hall of Fame coach who just eight months ago revealed she had been diagnosed with early-onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type, has turned the program over to longtime assistant Holly Warlick. “It was really a great ride for me,” Summitt said Thursday, speaking on the Tennessee basketball court named after her before a crowd of about 200 fans, faculty and friends.

WASHINGTON — The Houston Astros set a franchise record by hitting three triples in a five-run first inning, backing starter Bud Norris with a season-high 17 hits on the way to an 11-4 victory over the Washington Nationals on Thursday night. Norris pitched six innings for the win and helped himself with a two-run single. Brian Bogusevic and Jason Castro each had three hits for Houston. The Nationals entered with a major league-leading 1.92 ERA, but they allowed more runs or hits than they had in any of their first Associated Press 13 games. Washington had won Houston Astros’ Jose Altuve points after doubling eight of nine. The gunfight began at a bakery. Tizhe said the gunmen shot five bakers to death, before shooting a customs service officer and a man selling drinking water. Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is sacrilege” in the Hausa language of Nigeria’s north, is blamed for killing more than 430 people this year alone in Nigeria.

My son was released two weeks later, but my daughter is still there, suffering from traumatic brain injury. Abby, I was driving the car. Why can't my daughter have the life I took away from her? In many cases the answer is simply “fate.” While you feel your daughter is being punished instead of you, I say the guilt you're carrying IS punishment and it is not healthy for you or your child. Reed to present Lake Theater reunion show Clarion event to have wide variety of artists. Special to The Facts

LAKE JACKSON — The Lake Theater, located downtown, operated as a “live entertainment complex” from April 15, 2000, to April 15, 2008. More than 1,500 acts performed during this period, with entertainers ranging from ages 5 to 75 years old. The house band, named the Hello Texas Band, consisted of seven world-class musicians lead by Lake Jackson native Tommy Ward. The basic premise for this venue was to give both rising stars and established artists a stage on which to perform. Every Saturday night, those in attendance would hear country, pop, ’50s and gospel music and quite often an Elvis tribute artist. In addition to unknown artists, the Lake Theater booked nationally known acts such as Johnny Bush, The Platters, The Coasters, The Jordanaires, Vince

Vance and The Valliants and B J Thomas. Since closing the theater, former owner Bobby Reed has had numerous conversations with frequent theater visitors about the possibility of a reunion show. Reed said he would consider it if he could find a theater in which to perform. Reed spoke to Clarion Director Vorin Dornan about the Brazosport College venue. Once band leader Tommy Ward was on board, it was a go. Reed put together a variety of acts that would appeal to all ages. Along with host Reed and the Hello Texas Band, featuring Lori and Darla, the following acts are scheduled to perform: ’50s rocker Heath, gospel greats The Stovalls, American Idol contestant John Wayne Schulz, nationally known Elvis tribute artists Billy Wayde and Vince King, yodeling sensation Robyn Mundy, pianist Travis Bishop and

Chance, Marty Maggio, James Henry, and one of the Lake Theater’s favorite vocalists, Seth Johnson — will be presented before the performance. The show will be at 6:45 p.m. May 19 at The Clarion. French legends, actress Carol Kinder said. “Sweeney Todd” is the story of a man who had some very unfair things happen to him in his youth, Meyers said. When he returns to the town where he lost his wife and child, he begins his revenge with a straightedge razor and a chair rigged to drop bodies in the oven, where they are baked until they’re made into meat pies by his downstairs neighbor. But, if audiences take the time to watch, they will find much more involved in the story than gore. “It’s kind of a story of love and redemption,” Meyers said. “… and it’s a little bit about not being able to see what’s right in front of you.” There are a lot of universal truths in this very dark play, she said.

The play also resonates with today’s audiences by touching on their desensitization to violence and crime, Kinder said. It also refers to the Industrial Revolution’s impact on people’s dignity, she said. “It’s meant to be a melodrama,” Kinder said, “overdone so we can laugh at it.” Kinder plays Mrs. Lovett, Todd’s downstairs neighbor who uses the human meat to make pies. “It’s very challenging, but it’s a lot of fun,” Kinder said. If the audience can handle the gore, they can look forward to an interesting play featuring some of the best voices in town, Meyers said. Adult tickets are $15 and student tickets are $10.
