STATE COMMANDER’S COLUMN THE VFW CAMPAIGN FOR OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ATTENDED OUR MID -WINTER CONFERENCE.
It was a resounding success because of you! I think the awards evening was one of the best ever. Your outstanding efforts in support of our great Texas VFW are sincerely appreciated. When I think of the Texas VFW, I think of one big team: A team who works together caring for and assisting our veterans; a team who places a positive image on the Veterans Peyton Lumpkin of Foreign Wars through their works in the community; and a team who wants to do their best for our VFW and who wants our Texas VFW to be the best. Our Texas team knows that none of us as an individual is as smart or as good as all of us together and knows that if everyone is moving forward together, then success will take care of itself. One area where we can be at the top is in Membership. We can explode Texas wide open by March 31 with our membership special. It will take each of us doing our part. Just think where our Texas VFW would be if only half of us brought in one new member. We would have a membership of over 113,000!! I challenge each of us to have an “Each One Reach One” personal goal during the next few months. Prospective members are out there waiting for us to “ASK”. Look for veterans who proudly wear their military caps, display their service on their vehicles or license plates, etc. These veterans who are not yet VFW members would be honored to be asked to join our elite combat organization. They need us as much as we need them. We cannot prejudge and assume that they would not be interested. We also need to be diligent in assisting our continuous members. Phone calls to remind our Comrades that they need to renew their membership will be of great value. Several Posts have formed committees to contact their members. The results have been great. I am also pleased to note that several Districts have scheduled recruiting events at gun shows, hunting and fishing shows, National Guard Conferences and other likely events attended by warriors. You may have also noticed a new social media membership campaign by National. All efforts are aimed at pumping up our national membership outreach. The Commander-in-Chief is sponsoring a “Pot of Gold” contest from July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017. Three (3) winners will be selected at random to accompany him on an all-expense paid trip to Ireland along with their spouse or guest. Here is how you get in the drawing: Individual members will receive one (1) chance for every five (5) new/reinstated members recruited and ten (10) chances for every increment of 25 new/ reinstated members recruited. Post and District Commanders will receive ten (10) chances in recognition of 85%+ Post and/or District retention. On July 1, 2017 all of the names (individual, Post Commanders and District Commanders) will go into the drawing, and winners will be notified shortly thereafter. Awards are not transferable. The “Pot of Gold” contest is intended to show the Commander-in-Chief’s appreciation to our members who are out there helping to increase our membership and to give all of our members a chance to show how NO ONE DOES MORE FOR VETERANS. Commander-in-Chief Brian Duffy recently stated, “I BELIEVE in your leadership capabilities, and challenge you to push us to 95%+ by St.Paddy’s Day, March 17, 2017. This challenge will take a renewed commitment to aggressively pursue all avenues; reinstates, retention and new members too! With several National and Department level membership initiatives underway, the ascent to reach 95% by March 17th (St Patrick’s Day), is clearly within reach. Your leadership, and your Department’s laser focused efforts, will play a vital role in helping us achieve our next incremental goal of 95%.” The National VFW has not reached 100% in 24 years. They are depending on Texas to take them over the top. We need to do all we can to make this a successful mission. We are the best of the best, and working as a Texas Team, we will reach our goal of 100% +1 and be a big part in assisting National to do the same. Now that’s Teamwork!
Peyton Lumpkin, State Commander 2016-17

Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as over 1,100 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea, and abroad. It is said that a person dies twice: once when they take their final breath, and later, the last time their name is spoken. That is why when we lay wreaths on veterans’ graves, we say their names.
2
They encourage every volunteer who places a wreath on a veteran’s grave to say that veteran’s name aloud and take a moment to thank them for their service to our country. It’s a small act that goes a long way toward keeping the memory of our veterans alive. “We are not here to “decorate graves,” said Karen Worcester, Executive Director of Wreaths Across America. “We’re here to remember not their deaths, but their lives.”

TEXAS VFW MAGAZINE | WINTER 2017
STATE SENIOR VICE COMMANDER’S COLUMN MEMBERS: THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMITMENT TO SERVE IN A HISTORY WE CAN BE PROUD OF. We completed 2016 with outstanding programs that continue to benefit our veterans and community. We had the honor of recruiting great volunteers and have attracted the respect and volunteer services from our community leaders and business associates. Great job reaching out Edward Torres in your communities. We serve our troops, families, the homeless, provide scholarships, VAVS services and promote patriotism. We are especially proud of the assistance our service officers provide to our veterans. Thank you volunteers for fulfilling our goals. Continue to be focused on making a difference in our community and to be known as a family of veterans serving others. You fill many hearts with joy. Thank you for taking part in the opportunity to shape the public’s perception of the service that combat veterans continue to provide for our great nation. As we move forward in our fiscal year, we need to keep up with technology, we must band together to operate more efficiently. National Headquarters has unveiled a new website and a new mobile app. This allows members to manage their membership, recruit new members and gain access to exclusive content. The mobile app is available for apple and android users and can be found by searching VFW in the Apple app store or Google play store. Our collective voices will be heard and congress will know where VFW members stand on issues. We encourage you to actively support VFW’s legislative agenda. Sign up for VFW Action Corps weekly www.vfwac@vfw.org and communicate with legislators in your area. Protect your rights and benefits. The nation will be reminded that VFW members still serve this great nation in our communities, our state and in Washington D.C. Tell your story and communicate your personal encounters with your VA entitlements and concerns. We encourage VFW members and Auxiliary members to recruit for one another. Membership in our elite organization is a privilege for those who are serving now and in previous wars. Be proud of the wonderful example of why we were founded in 1899 and the continued relevance for all generations of warriors. Help make our Department strong by attending your Post and Town Hall meetings and voice your concerns. We must recruit and retain members and work together to achieve our goals and keep our Posts in existence. In March we nominate new officers and elect them in April. Search the website www.vfw.org or the National By-law book to prepare to fulfill the oath of obligation of the office you select to seek. All officers elected and appointed shall display integrity and resolve differences of opinion in a professional mature manner and devote countless hours of your time. In closing give an hour and recognize the five signs of mental health awareness. Make a difference in a veteran’s life and search www.giveanhour.org. Safe guard our troops, shelter the homeless, send prayers of healing to those suffering from illness or loss of a loved one.

STATE JUNIOR VICE COMMANDER’S COLUMN WOW, THE NEW YEAR HAS BEGAN AND WE JUST HAD OUT MID WINTER 2017 CONFERENCE. Wasn’t our Mid Winter conference a great 4 days? The staff at Headquarters did a great job in preparing our Mid Winter Conference and we appreciate their support. Thanks for a job well done. The New Year 2017 will bring us new opportunities as well as new chalInge Conley lenges. The biggest challenge we face is to continue to grow our membership and be the “LEADER” and voice for our Veterans. We have an opportunity to work with congressional leaders and our new VA Secretary in addressing our concerns with VA care and benefits that our Veterans have earned and deserve. Previous leadership teams have suggested to privatize the VA system with a voucher system and others have suggested other options as specialized services for injuries sustained while in service and or combat. Currently the VA has made very small strives, but we must remain vigilant so they don’t threaten the promise made to all servicemen and women who have proudly served this country. I would like to dedicate a portion of my article to MEMBERSHIP. We have members that can’t attend our Post meetings for various reasons, however their membership is very important to our organization. We are a membership based organization so if we do not have the numbers for our lobbyists to use in Washington we will lose what we have! It is up to ALL of us to support our Post by referring or bringing new members to them. Push Life Memberships and the benefit to them: • Never again having to pay annual dues and avoiding future increases in dues • No more renewal notices • No more phone calls from Post Quartermasters about dues Community Events - we must all get out to events in our communities, doing a show n’tell of what we do, and report on it and you will then start to see our membership grow. The internet is the quickest way to connect with family, friends, businesses, and other organizations. We need to create and sustain a vigorous and strong on line presence to ensure you maintain a following and hopefully gain their membership to our Posts. As we reach out to our younger audience we must show and tell by demonstrating what we are doing in the community and what type of assistance we are providing for our veterans. Update your Facebook page and website. Get with local media for support, have them publish articles of events completed in the community. Get with radio stations and ask for Public Service announcements, they are free. I want to thank all of the District and Auxiliary members for your hospitality towards Earl and me as we travel throughout this great State of Texas. Please remember that our team is here to serve you.

1ST PLACE
$12,000 TEXAS VFW VOICE OF DEMOCRACY
VOICE OF DEMOCRACY
1ST PLACE ESSAY
My Responsibility to America Written by Texas VFW Voice of Democracy Winner Adam C. DeYoung John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States said, “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” America is a garden where the seeds of hope are planted. Hope for liberty, success, and hope for a better future. Planted in the soil of American innovation and industrialism, the seeds begin to flourish and the future of America is nourished and cultivated. President Kennedy spoke these well-known words to the future of America, the seedlings, hoping they would grow and achieve their full potential. As citizens of the United States of America, we are both the seeds and the gardeners. We, as American citizens, have an obligation to recognize the rich history of America that is rooted deep within the nation’s soil, while looking to the future and cultivating the next generation of America’s harvest. The gardener is mindful of the space and environment that his seedlings need to grow successfully. If this is done correctly, those seedlings will turn into robust, healthy, fruit-bearing plants and flowers. As a young American, I am always mindful of previous Americans who have sacrificed their lives for future generations. I know it is because of their sacrifice, that Americans like me enjoy the lives and opportunities we have today. A gardener is responsible for his own share of the harvest. As an American citizen, I must be aware that no one owes me anything. I have been entrusted to be a productive member of this great country. I must expect the same from others; that they will have enough accountability to pay their own way and keep society functioning. Just as the gardener is responsible for his own yield, I, too, must be accountable for my own gleanings. Perhaps one of the most prominent obligations I have to America is to be willing to defend her. Throughout American history, conflicts have arisen and valiant Americans have accepted the calling, and fought for our country. In a garden, many creatures will try to take the fruit of the plants. If the gardener neglects his garden, the creatures will devour the whole garden. However, if the gardener decides defense is needed, he will construct a system, to defend it. The gardener’s defense is minute compared to my responsibility to be willing to defend the country. The people who fight are the links in a fence to protect the garden. As an American who has realized there in no better place to live, I have a duty to be willing to fight off intruders and those who would undermine the garden of the United States. There is a serious responsibility in serving in the Armed Forces of the United States, and it is one of substantial honor and dignity. The gardener will defend his harvest, and I will defend the rights afforded to me. In the Declaration of Independence, many unalienable rights are presented to the American People. These rights have been tried and tested, and servicemen and women have stood in the life of duty to protect them. In turn, this becomes my responsibility to not only know them, but be willing to protect them. As an American I have a direct duty in taking an active part in voting. I will not resign myself to being a voter of popular opinion. Rather I have a responsibility of being an informed voter. I will make a decision on who is best equipped for the country as a whole. As a gardener selects the best seeds to grow, I too must research and study the individuals who are attempting to be elected for a public office. Embracing this responsibility carries a great impact for the future generations of America. There is an inevitable need for nutrition in any garden via sunlight, soil, and water. In the same way the gardener provides these things to his plants, I must also provide key nutrients to future generations of Americans. Through my actions, I will provide the best sunlight. Through my beliefs, I can provide the best soil to nourish young seedlings. As a result, these future generations may have an even greater place to grow and thrive. The gardener wants his plants to bear their desired fruit, and I should want the best for future generations. By watering them with advice, I can create an ideal place for them to live and teach the same responsibilities they should embrace as well. The task of watering young Americans with discipline, right thinking, and responsibility is in great need, as many citizens of WWW.TEXASVFW.ORG America do not realize more people will live and desire to thrive in this land for years to come.
