STATE COMMANDER Edward C. Torres The privilege of serving as the Department of Texas Commander to the Veterans of Foreign Wars has been the greatest honor for me to represent this organization. In this 50th year of my story as a combat grunt that served in Vietnam, you gave me the opportunity to remind all Americans of the thousands of brothers that did not return home and gave their life in service for our freedom. We are a team of service veterans that will never forget the sacrifice of all the men and women that continue to defend our country and the home of others throughout the world for peace. In our organization it is humbling to see there are so many down to earth people that are proud to say they belong to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. It felt great to see their devotion in planning, preparing, and presenting events that bring real heart felt feelings of patriotism and loyalty to our nation. Their dedication was focused in accomplishing the missions we plan each year in their areas of our state. Comrades and sisters who believe that “United we are a Team” can only accomplish productivity. Thank you for all you do for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This year started with the devastating harm of Hurricane Harvey but the quick response to action did not stop our operation. Thank you to the boots on the ground teams in Texas and throughout the nation that helped out these displaced families recover with great hope. To the members of the Rockport Post and all those affected in our coastline throughout the Houston area and beyond, you are strong organizations that are an inspiration to our purpose. In serving as your representative, it is an honor to be selected as a grand marshal in a parade, be the guest speaker at civic events, unite with corporations that want the opportunity to support America’s veterans and our military. These events were a proud moment in time that gave me the resource of promoting the purpose of our great organization and keeping our nations heroes in the public’s eye. Thank you for that privilege. What a blessing to see the patriotism in Gainesville honoring our veterans where the whole city pulls together to spread the stories of our Medal of Honor recipients. Their mission unites all the community, veterans’ organizations, and civic organizations, in week-long events that pay tribute to the American heroes of our military services. I was one small piece of the puzzle that experienced a love for our country that included the citizens that did not serve in the military but want to be part of who we represent. There are many other cities in Texas where the Veterans of Foreign Wars, your Posts and Districts are the center point of Community Service, Americanism ideals, display of Patriotism, Legislative leadership, military support, youth activities and scholarship opportunities that is made available through the service of our nations veterans, that is you and your family. Texas is a huge diverse state. As Belinda and I traveled around the state, it has been a blessing to share your love for community. Thank you for receiving us with open arms and welcoming us in your post homes. Thank you for all the hospitality, your delicious potluck dishes, apple pies or joining you at your favorite restaurants. We will treasure the times we spent together with you and look forward to meeting again as fellow comrades. The traditions and love that people display throughout the state of Texas made all our travels worthwhile. To hear a member tell you how proud they are to meet a state officer was a humbling heart warming moment as your representative. The past three years of serving in the chairs has provided me with the knowledge and witness of the amazing business operation of this great state. Thank you to the staff that served the 2017-2018 year. My appreciation goes out to you, especially the District Commanders, Post Commanders, and Chairmen that did their best is supporting our programs, membership initiatives, and serving all the veterans in our state. The hardest decisions to be made were closing posts, reprimand officers, or remove officers, but that is part of business. These decisions were the right things to do. I hope we can encourage Posts cont’d pg. 8

cont’d to merge than to lose posts and their members. My recommendation is to spell out Veterans of Foreign Wars and break away from identifying us as VFW. Improve our image always to gain the respect of the citizens we serve. To Past National Chaplain Robert Dickerson thank you for keeping me aware of my service to others with your daily inspirational wisdom from the word of the Lord. I appreciate your guidance. We need to welcome and open our hearts to change. Change is good especially to draw the younger heroes that are returning home. That change starts with a healthier environment. Encourage family settings. Returning soldiers long to reconnect to their family. For many of today’s generation of freedom fighters, relaxation does not include smoking and drinking. Listen to their ideas; let them tell you about their technology skills and how they can enhance our post homes. Realize that the generations before us left their legacy to those of us currently in leadership and that legacy has to move forward to the next generation. Do not hinder the legacy. Let it continue to grow into the next century of service. Always appreciate and respect our partners, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Understand that without the Auxiliary we cannot be a
complete unit. They bring the love of the American family that we were so blessed to return to. They dedicate their talents with their touch of home; enhance our Patriotic themes with amazing decorations, and unconditional support. Thank you to our wives, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, daughters, and granddaughters. Also know what a privilege to share this organization with our fathers, grandfathers, brothers, sons, and grandsons. Thank you Madam President Millie for your love for veterans and for sharing your husband and family with the whole state of Texas while you served our organization. You are an angel for us. To my wife Belinda and my family you are my greatest blessing. Thank you for the support and understanding. Our families knew us as young innocent men and are witness of the mind change when we returned after serving in war and still remain by our side. We need all the care you provide. Thank God for you. • “Service not self” Edward C. Torres, State Commander 2017-18
STATE SENIOR VICE COMMANDER’S COLUMN G R E E T I N G S CO M R A D E S A N D A U X I L I A RY! Hoping everyone is doing well as we are about to close out another year. I want to personally thank each and everyone of you for allowing me the privilege of serving you as your State Senior Vice Commander. It was an HONOR! As I traveled this great State I enjoyed your hospitality and courtesy extended to Earl and me. Inge Conley What a humbling year and I appreciate it very much. To every Post and District Commander THANK YOU Commanders for a job well done. As most of you all know by now I just returned from VFW training at Kansas City to prepare me for the next step in our Organization. We received so many topics of discussion in a very short period of time, but believe me it was very beneficial and eye opening. I learned a lot from the VFW staff instructors. Outstanding training and very educational. I encourage all the new Post and District Commanders and Quartermasters to visit the VFW training and Support Division web
site for up-to-date training materials and forms. They have every management tool available. Please take advantage of this wonderful web site, along with that I encourage all of you to attend our own OTS held in Austin in July. This upcoming year my plan is to protect our benefits we were promised when we enlisted into the Armed Services. Together we will continue to approach our Congressional leaders to help in the cause. This will be a priority for all along with membership. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the upcoming State Convention in Dallas. I ask that you please continue to work hard in completing your programs for this year and continue to prospect for those new members. Membership is important. Our new members are our future in continuing our traditions and rituals. Mentor our new members. Welcome them with open arms and get them involved Comrades. We need them! In closing, please honor our Veterans this Memorial Day and everyday, as they have given far more than we ever could. Wishing all the best to everyone. See you in Dallas.

STATE JUNIOR VICE COMMANDER’S COLUMN HELLO MEMBERS OF THE D E PA R T M E N T O F T E X A S! As you read this, the 2017-2018 VFW year is rapidly coming to a close. Officers for the 2018-2019 have been or will soon be elected and installed and the Department Convention is upon us. I want to THANK EVERY Comrade for their dedication to our organization and for their willingness to Keith King fulfill our stated mission. I hope to see many of at the Convention in Dallas in June. It is always good to see old friends and make new ones. Make sure your delegates are registered and dues are paid in order to vote. I would remind all, that officer training is a very valuable tool to use in order to ensure all is in order at every level. Please be sure to make your reservations for this year’s OTS as soon as possible as this training fills up very quickly. I would encourage each post to keep working the membership program. As of 4/23, 109 posts in the Department of Texas need less than
8
10 members to be 100%! That is 1/3 of the Department. With many of the available awards requiring this, please look over your roster and make a call or make a visit to these members. Each Post should also continue with VPRs and community service as well, this is how the public interacts with us. I applaud all for their efforts so far and am sure those will continue. I will continue to visit your Post or your District as time permits in these last few weeks and would encourage each of you to let me know what your opinion is of what the Department does well and also what you believe it could improve on. Please be as respectful to our officers as they are to you. We/I work for you and I can’t promise all will be changed to make everyone happy as it is the membership’s voting that rule us. I can promise that I will listen to the good and bad, then take it to the council. I really look forward to seeing each of you in the near future.

DESERT STORM AND
ENDURING FREEDOM. William R. Graser was a Sergeant First Class recruited by the US Army Security Agency in 1965. His assignments included Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, West Germany, occupied West Berlin—and the US Army Security Agency’s headquarters at Arlington Hall Station, Arlington, Virginia. He earned the Army of Occupation Medal and was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal for his exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements while serving with the US Army Field Station Berlin. Graser wrote Veterans’ Reflections: History Preserved to increase our general understanding of American warfare through the eyes of those who were there. He concludes with a phrase that will be familiar to anyone who has a veteran in the family: “When you see a veteran, say thank you!” This book is a remarkable tribute to the sacrifice made by our veterans who fought for our country. VETERANS’ REFLECTIONS IS COMPELLING AND INSPIRING TO SAY THE LEAST. OUR HEROES DESERVE TO BE HEARD. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Pacific Book Review Star As a veteran himself, the author is obviously very close to this work, and it shows not only in his passion for his subject, but also his attention to detail. His method, which weaves the veteran’s own stories into an historical overview of a specific conflict, is extremely effective.
The soldiers’ accounts go well beyond the war’s scorecard and reveal some of the actual fears and experiences of the participants. Anyone can tell the facts behind a story, but those who lived it can share insights no secondhand history can match. GRAPEVINE, TX | District 21, Post 10454
