Success
The Breeds Origin The Texel sheep originates from the island of Texel, one of the north-western islands off Holland. Rigorous selection resulted in the development of a large, prolific and well muscled sheep. In extensive trials to compare the Texel with other terminal sires the verdict was that the Texel excelled in carcass quality and in particular, in lean meat yield. In the United Kingdom, Texels have shown that they are capable of withstanding the rigors of the Scottish winter without any hardship and their progeny have proved to be as adaptable in our climate and altitude as the flocks in Holland and France. The breed is well known as a provider of a high quality carcass that has a high killing out percentage and as a breed that transmits its qualities to its progeny when used for crossing purposes.
www.texel.co.uk 2
The Breeds Value The historic financial benefits of genetic improvement from the use of the Texel breed have been significant. The financial benefits of genetic improvement between 1996 and 2015 amount to £197.0 million, or £4.8 million annually. The benefits can be attributed to a combination of an increasing genetic trend, increased use of rams from pedigree registered flocks (as opposed to rams from commercial flocks), and increased use of Texel rams to breed replacements. The future financial benefits of genetic improvement from the use of the Texel breed are predicted to be significant.
Tel: 02476 696629 office@texel.co.uk
The estimated financial benefits of genetic improvement between 2016 until 2035 (20 years) amount to £244.5 million, or £23.1 million annually. The benefits can be attributed to both an increased penetration or market share of the Texel breed, and also accelerating rates of genetic progress in economically important traits.

Chairman’s Foreword Chief Executive’s Foreword Board of Directors Presidents Award 2013-2015 Sire of the Year 2015 AGM & Social weekend
society matters
In this section:
Chairman’s Foreword
Chairman’s Foreword
I served on the board from 1985 - 1995 and the change in technology since then is immense. The membership still continues to grow, and having attended some in-lamb sales in November and December it was encouraging to see so many young people around the ringside wanting to get involved with Texel sheep. I would like to welcome Steve Smith and Sylvia Rawlings on to the board. The board has changed quite considerably over the last two years, but I feel we have a good mix of breeders of both commercial and pedigree sheep, supported by an excellent chief executive and staff in the office to keep progressing the breed.
W
hat an honour it is to have been elected Chairman of the UK’s leading sheep Society.
While sitting writing this it has given me time to reflect on the journey Texel Sheep have made since coming into the UK. Where has the time gone? Forty three years ago I can remember my late father coming home from Lanark and telling me about this new breed of sheep a group of farmers and a processor were wanting to import and asked if he would be interested. I am still as excited now as I was then about Texel sheep.
www.texel.co.uk 10
The Society has come a long way since those early days and so have the sheep. The ups and downs of the 70’s and the winning of Winter Fairs, Smithfields and carcass competitions in the 80’s & 90’s was when people started to take notice of Texels. There has been a steady rise in sales of pedigree and commercial tups from then until now. Texels have the carcase quality that suits today’s market, but we can’t be complacent. We must watch that we maintain this quality and not lose the market share to other breeds.
Will Sawday is into his second year of the ‘Genomics of Mastitis in meat sheep’ project and we look forward to getting some results during the year. The Society continues to embrace new technology and our DNA profiling keeps progressing and will help protect pedigree Texels. Having just come through the wettest winter I can remember, I can’t wait until the spring and the start of the show season where the buzz will begin again. The social side of the Society is important too, and I look forward to meeting many of you at the shows, sales and events during the coming year.
David J McKerrow Society Chairman
Chief Executive’s Foreword But the one thing that all members agree on is the strong community feel across the entire organisation, wherever and whenever members choose to visit in the UK. The membership offers a really friendly and supportive environment that enables new and old members alike to be the best they can be in breeding Texel sheep. That’s just one reason why the Society continues to grow its membership which now exceeds 2150 members. As a result, despite a falling national flock, the number of Texels continues to increase as the breed becomes more important to the industry.
often ask Society members what it is that they particularly love about the Society and as you can imagine I get a number of different responses. Many cite the fact that they love the social elements including showing, while for others it is the buzz at the well attended sales auctions; or the progressive approach by the Society in research and development, as science is key to the breeds’ and farming’s future success.
I
For a large number one of the best things about the Society is the kind and supportive approach from our office staff, with this and the range of clubs across diverse regions of the UK helping members feel valued. Without a doubt many members enjoy the huge number of opportunities to get involved with the breed and of course making a difference in developing a breed which has become so valuable to the UK commercial industry.
If you are one of the many new members considering joining the Society, before you make your mind up, I recommend that you come along to either a Society or regional Club event. They have a real buzz about them; you only really get a sense of how impressive things are in the Texel membership when you see it for yourself. So come along and get involved, I have no doubt you will be well supported and you will soon love being part of the Texel family as all our members do.

Our breed has a real buzz about it!
The total economic impact of the Texel breed also continues to rise as the breed takes a greater market share of rams across the industry.

Garngour Vintage is Sire of the Year 2015
Sire of the Year
The First Year Sire of the Year is Garngour Vintage, bred by the Clark family, purchased by Albert and George Howie, Knock, in conjunction with the Knox family, Haddo, and Sandy Lee, Fordafourie, at Lanark last year. The 2015 winner was based on the highest aggregate reached for the top three ram’s lambs in the sire’s first season sold at the Society’s four National sales with three different registered Dams. Garngour Vintage’s three high selling sons at National Sales in 2015 were Knock Will-I-am from the Howie’s which sold for 70,000gns at Lanark to Charlie Boden, Fordafourie Welcome which sold at 1500gns at Lanark and Haddo Winner from the Knox family which made 500gns, again at Lanark.
This left Garngour Vintage, who carries an index of 307, with an overall average for his three highest selling sons from individual dams of 24,000gns. Taking second place was Cornmore Velvet Jacket bred by John Leitch and sold for 85,000gns at Lanark 2014. And third spot this year went to Procters Ventura. Bred by Procters Farm and purchased for 4000gns in 2014 by David Houghton for the Tophill flock in partnership with Charlie Boden.

2015 AGM & Social Weekend St Andrews
AGM & Social Weekend 2015 www.texel.co.uk 16
torm Abigail joined us all at St Andrews as an uninvited guest, but failed to put a dampener on the 2015 AGM & Social weekend. Held at the luxurious Fairmont St Andrews Hotel on the beautiful Fife coast line, we kicked off the event with a drinks reception followed by a sumptuous buffet, Society presentations were made to retirees, director Roy Hughes and office staff Angela Dobson. Alan Clark picked up the appropriately named ‘Sire of the Year’ award for Garngour Vintage and we all thanked Henry Gamble for his time as chairman and wife Alice for her support over the last two years.
S
One of Henry’s last acts as chairman was to announce the recipient of his President’s award and his choice of Keith Jamieson couldn’t have been better received. Keith was genuinely surprised and delighted; the Texel Members were unanimous in their approval giving this highly respected and loved breeder a well deserved standing ovation and round of applause, much to his surprise. The Race-night that followed proved to be one of the most popular nights of entertainment ever experienced at our Social weekends, If you missed it - you missed out! The eventual winning team was led by Andy Barr who won by a nose chased closely by Keith Jamieson’s team. Saturday brought a bright windy day for the Highland games and Stock Judging
competition, judged by Keith Jamieson and with thanks to David McCall - Noresk, Robert Cockburn - Knap & David McKerrow - Nochnary, for providing the quality stock. The winner was Nigel Hamill, Ballynadrenta Texels who received a large bottle of liquid refreshment for his correct prediction. The Texel Highland games involved ginger wigs and tartan hats, caber tossing, wellie wanging, haggis chucking, weight lifting and a wheelbarrow race that was beyond competitive! Following lunch and the AGM, the pre Dinner Dance drinks reception took place before we enjoyed a delicious dinner of local Fife beef, sponsored by Galloway and MacLeod and sourced by incoming chairman David McKerrow, and fresh Sky Salmon. Graham Hill presented Kirsty Harrison,Youth Cancer Trust representative, with a cheque for £5225, the culmination of a year of fund raising events by the Society and Clubs. This fund continues to grow with further donations being made on Grahams 4 Nations Challenge ‘Just Giving’ site and from Texel regional Clubs. Guests were entertained by after dinner speaker Hamish Dykes and then danced the night away to the music of the ‘Big Squeeze’, a proper ceilidh enjoyed by all and a fitting end to a fantastic Texel weekend.
Keith Jamieson
O
Presented and chosen by outgoing Society president Henry Gamble, this award is made bi-annually by the retiring president to an individual who in their opinion has given outstanding commitment, time and experience towards the success of the Society. Keith was surprised and delighted to accept the award, the Texel guests were unanimous in their approval and gave Keith a standing ovation, much to his embarrassment. He then went on to lead his team to second place in the nights racing event proving the old saying ‘it is compulsory to grow old but not to grow up’!
The Annan flock is one of the oldest Texel flocks in the country, having been founded in 1973 by the importation of two gimmers and the imported ram Annan Captain from the Robert Depernet flock in France. The influence of the flock in the breed in the UK over the past 40 years can be seen in many of the top breeding flocks which can trace their foundations to Annan. Over the years Keith and the flock have held many UK sales records and periodically held world records for top prices for both males and females. Keith has worked tirelessly promoting the Texel breed at sales, shows and fatstock events. The 2015 National Texel sales highest selling Texel ram that sold for 70,000gns can be traced back to the Annan flock, the flock has taken supreme champions ten times at Royal shows, two supreme championships and one reserve at Smithfield covering the whole spectrum of showing, selling and carcass competitions. Keith has now reduced his flock, as he reached the fine age of 21 on February 29th, but we are sure he will not be reducing the time he dedicates to the Texel breed. We look forward to the pleasure of his company at Texel events in the years to come and offer our congratulations to the worthy President’s award winner that is Keith Jamieson.

ever compromising on quality is a firm foundation to build any business and for Cumbrian breeder Jamie Brownrigg its one he has stuck too from the outset, always aiming to buy the sheep he’s wanted provided he can afford them.

“I started the flock in 2000, but unfortunately never really got going as we were taken out in the foot-and-mouth cull in 2001. I didn’t wait long before I got going again though, buying four Ettrick ewes and a brace of Woodmarsh ewes to set the flock up with. They were a great starting point and I’ve since added a few ewes over the years as I’ve been able to. “A few years later I rang Mick Gould to see if they might have a few more ewes for sale as the first two had done so well for me. As it happened Mick was beginning to consider
40
selling the flock as he didn’t feel he was doing them justice. I jumped at the chance and bought the flock from them with these ewes breeding tremendous females for me,” explains Jamie. “After that over the last five years older ewes from the Greenwood flock have been purchased. These have been good solid ewes and have served me well. “Then in late 2014 I saw that Nick Tavernor was advertising the adult portion of his Salocin flock for sale. With a depth of pedigree and some great performance in the flock I thought they could be a good fit with the existing flock. I went to see them and they were a credit to Nick. The opportunity to acquire more than 30 years of hard work and meticulous decision making in one go should not be underestimated.
To help the flock complement his working life Jamie uses Zwartbles teaser tups to tighten lambing up and in 2016 introduced AI to make the most of one of his new stock ram, Glenside Royal Welsh, which was bought at the Einon dispersal in July 2015 for 3000gns. “It works well and means I can book two weeks off work for lambing and get most of the ewes lambed. I’m lucky to have both my wife, Louise, and my mother and father on hand to help out too, particularly once I go back to work. And at nine our daughter Caitlin is becoming a useful pair of hands too. “The good thing is that in most cases provided the ewes are in good condition ahead of lambing they can largely be left to get on with things on their own. Once ewes have lambed they tend to stay in for quite a while to ensure the lambs get off to a good start. We lamb in early February, but the weather can be harsh up here at that time
Hesket-Newmarket-based Jamie aims to sell all his rams as lambs, with many of them taken on to make shearlings by others. “I did keep some lambs round to shearlings myself one year and had a good trade with them, but its hard to do as well as everything else and its equally pleasing to see them go and do well with others. With two champion shearlings at Hexham in the last five years being Castle Sowerby breeding it is good to see people doing well with and making a success of my ram lambs sold between 300 and 500gns. Also lambs have been sold at 900gns and several at 800gns too. We’re still awaiting what will be a proud moment when we sell one at four figures. “I keep all the ewe lambs through to gimmers and will probably start selling a few each year from now on as the numbers in the flock increase and I get to know the families in the bought in flocks better too. We’re lambing about 150 pedigree ewes at the moment,” he explains. “Lambs are generally creep fed to start with and then I take them off creep later to see how they grow on as the grass comes, with lambs then weaned at 12 weeks old as I want to see what they can do for themselves and it allows me to get the ewes stocked more tightly for the summer. “Ewe lambs then go away to keep at Skelton on rented ground there from August onwards, with these shorn in September and run there through the winter on about 300 acres of grass.”

“It can be a challenge to fit the flock work around the day job, but the two are mutually beneficial as I have the opportunity to use my own flock as a learning tool for the students. For many students the chance to work with pedigree stock is few and far between and it helps show them a different side of the industry to that which they may be used to seeing elsewhere,” says Jamie who is a course manager for apprenticeships at Newton Rigg College
of year, so I’d sooner leave the sheep inside than turn them out and see them suffer as a result.”

“It was a flock with great traditional Texel traits, there were no poor sheep among them and I felt they had huge potential to develop. As a flock they were even and particularly correct. It was clear Nick had put a lot of time and effort in to developing the flock and the opportunity to tap in to those genetics was too good to miss.

Going forward Jamie is looking at performance recording the flock this year having previously been slightly sceptical of it. “I bought three shearling ewes from Drinkstone and have seen how their lambs have performed and fleshed more easily off grass and carried meat compared to some non recorded bloodlines. I’m keen also to use it as a tool for teaching the students and to provide that educational link from the pedigree sector to the commercial sector. I do worry that some lambs are being pushed too hard and whether they’ll work or not, but that’s the same in non recorded flocks.” On the sire side notable rams which have influenced the flock over the last 15 years include Douganhill Magnum, and Ellen Valley Pedro, with perhaps the most influential of all being Topside Supreme, a tup we shared with the Ridley family at Haltcliffe. He was a great female breeder and left really correct ewes. “This year’s lambs will be by a number of sires, including Glenside Royal Welsh which we bought at the Einion dispersal as an older tup and Crailloch Wrangler and Ballochneck Wright After, both of which were bought at Lanark as lambs last year. Develoing the flock over last 15 years has

seen some highs and some lows, but the good times always outweigh the bad. “When buying the Texel flock from Woodmarsh I’ve never forgotten the words of Mick Gould who said that achieving success and developing a flock would not happen quickly, ‘You must, like anything, serve your apprenticeship which could be more than 10 years,’ he said. It was an appropriate message for an apprenticeship course manager,” adds Jamie. “I’m looking for good skins, legs and tops when it comes to buying rams. I’ve seen the peeler fashion come through and now its on its way out again I’m looking to breed lambs with good full coats, particularly bearing in mind the climate we’re farming in here in an exposed part of Cumbria,” he adds.

t may be the rams that grab the headlines for most flocks, but when it comes to Alastair Gault’s Forkins flock there is no doubt it’s the success enjoyed by the flock’s females that have really helped to put this Antrim-based breeder on the map nationally.

Gimmers from the flock have sold at £15,000 privately as well as to 11,000gns, 8000gns and 6500gns twice at auction, with all but one of these top prices achieved for in-lamb females sold at the Northern Stars Sale, Ballymena. “We’ve been lucky in some ways to have started with exceptional female lines which have set the tone for the rest of the flock. When I started with Texels in 1995 it came as a result of working with the Sweet Wall flock at Loughonmore Farms. I initially bought ewes from the Hillhead flock of the
Watson family and from Stephen Shortt’s Aughnagill flock. “Then in 2001 Loughonmore Farms sold their flock and I was able to buy the flock of 30 ewes and ewe lambs to expand the Forkins flock. There was some great breeding in these ewes and Springhill Expert was one sire which had left a real mark on the Sweet Wall flock. His daughters and their progeny have given a great female base to work from,” explains Alastair. Alongside the Sweet Wall origins one female line which stands out is one which goes back to a Ballynahone ewe bought from Richard Henderson by the Sweet Wall flock which was in turn the dam of Sweet Wall Gigolo, a ram which was in the belly of his dam when she was bought for 1500gns. “He bred some great sheep and is behind many of our best females,” he adds.
“Just before that we’d had great success with Castlecairn Kennedy too, but Mc Fly goes down as a real star performer. He’s bred well everywhere he’s been used and has just clicked with a great range of breeding too. I guess we could all do with another like that if we could find one!”
And by only keeping six gimmers a year for himself Alastair says buyers can be assured of getting the best possible breeding from the flock when it comes to the sales. “We flush 10-12 Texels a year, so always have plenty of quality to chose from, but it is important to be clear on only keeping the best as otherwise we could overkill the market and that wouldn’t be good for ourselves or anyone else.”
“Such is in the influence of Mc Fly that he was the grand sire of the gimmer, GAF1100309, which took the interbreed championship at Balmoral in 2012 and went on to sell for 11,000gns to Paul O’Connor of the Drumgooland flock. As well as being grand sire to the gimmer which was champion at Balmoral in 2014, GAF1300824.” He was also grand sire to the Forkins flock’s dearest ram to date, the 65,000gns Forkins Rocksolid sold to Trinidad Investments at Lanark in 2010, with this lamb being by Tamnamoney Ned, a Mc Fly son.
However, the flock is managed on a heavy commercial basis, with all ewes away wintered on grass only and coming back just ahead of lambing. “We farm some heavy ground, so getting the ewes away for the winter helps ease the pressure on the ground and gives the fields a break before we start turning ewes and lambs out after lambing. “By the time we’ve lambed the Suffolks and the Texels as well as the recipients and with
“Like everyone we’re conscious of keeping a clear focus on the commercial customer and with competition strong in this part of the world it is important to keep the main customers happy. But alongside that we’re lucky to be able to sell significant numbers of females too and that means paying attention to breed character and correctness. “In our tups we want to breed some size and stretch along with good tops and ends.
Alastair Gault - Forkins
We also breed for a bit of neck as we find it helps them last longer and the last thing we want to breed is rams which don’t go away and thrive for the buyers. We do though look for that bit of flash and character as that’s what helps sell the females when it comes to both empty and in-lamb gimmers. With up to 40 gimmers a year to sell we need to produce what those customers want too,” he says.
Tel: 02476 696629 office@texel.co.uk
But perhaps of all the rams which have left the greatest mark on the Forkins flock is the noted Douganhill Mc Fly which was bought as a lamb in partnership with the Tamnamoney and Ballynahone flocks. “He’d stood second at the Highland in 2006 and proved to be an exceptional investment, breeding the 28,000gns Forkins Nijinsky and the 16,000gns Cherryvale Nijinsky in his first season.

“Creep feed is introduced to the lambs at about three weeks old once lambs start to look for it and nibbling at the ewes’ feed and lambs stay on creep until weaning, usually in mid June. After that the sale lambs are picked out and moved on to either a new ley or a field of Tyfon and are fed accordingly. Those lambs not destined for early sales and all the ewe lambs don’t receive any feed from weaning onwards, although in some years they are trough fed for a short time until grass is able to catch up. “The aim is to grow our sheep as naturally as possible from grass and with that in mind we’ve been trying to grow more clover in the leys in the last two to three years to help with pasture quality.” Looking ahead Alastair says he hopes to keep producing the goods as the flocks have done in the past, but says increasing competition both locally and nationally
“We’ve been fortunate to have bought some great breeding tups in the past which have really knitted with our females. Duncryne Uber Cool is another lamb which has done well for us, breeding consistently and in 2014 we sold 30 ram lambs by him to average more than £1000 with the top price only being 3500gns. That just shows how level his lambs were and his daughters have done well too, including the top seven gimmers at Ballymena Show in 2015 all being Uber Cool daughters. Sportsmans Scania is another that has done well in recent years and the quality of his back breeding has shone through in his progeny over time’ Its important for everyone to remember that sheep breeding is a long-term project and it’s the depth of pedigree that is equally as important as what a lamb looks like on the day when it comes to selecting the next stock tup, adds Alaistair. “We’d all like to speed the process up, but even with modern technology such as embryo transfer you still need that bit of luck to make it all come together. It is often the second or third generation down when a tup really proves his worth.”
Alastair Gault - Forkins
The aim is to turn ewes and lambs out as soon as possible, but the fickle Northern Irish climate doesn’t always play to the same tune and in some harder years ewes and lambs can stay in for up to six weeks. “Throughout that time though I always try and get them outside during the day for a bite of grass and to keep them moving.

could be tricky as new entrants to the breed.
Farming in partnership with Matt’s parents having moved to Aberdeenshire from the Yorkshire Dales in 2004, Matt and Shirley believe there is a ready market for well grown, well fleshed Texel shearlings in the north east of Scotland, with a large number of local Texel flocks concentrating on producing ram lambs. “Many of the flocks up here are using ET to breed ram lambs targeted at the main pedigree sales. There’s nothing wrong with that if it works for them, but I’m nervous of going down that route as it is a costly business and high risk. We’d need to be hitting some five figure prices to make it justifiable and I think that
The family already run a pedigree Bluefaced Leicester flock, selling ram lambs at many of the breed’s major sales, including Builth Wells, Carlisle and Kelso. “We’re not afraid of spending as much as we can afford on the right sires and its always worthwhile buying the best ram you can manage no matter what the breed.”
N

“I’m keen to build on the solid foundation the Culterallers flock has brought with it and will be looking to invest in new stock sires as the need arises.”
With 130 ewes bought from the McCosh Bros along with 37 ewe hoggs Matt has since slimmed the flock down to 100 ewes, with 30 ewes sold to the Isle of Barra. “The ewes have scanned well this time around at 180% with lambs due to stock sires
Running 200 acres at home along with a further 70 acres of grass rented in, the Seed family also run a herd of 100 Limousin cross sucklers, with heifers put to Aberdeen-Angus bulls and cows going to Charolais sires. “We sell the progeny as yearling stores, with the mix of cattle and sheep on the farm helping with grassland management,” he explains.
“For now though I’m keen to get the Texels established here and see how they do in their first year. I’m lucky to have the support of my wife Shirley who splits her time between her vet career and caring for our two young children. We may not hit the dizzy heights of five figure sales with our Texels just yet, but if we can breed rams which perform for our customers I’m sure they’ll be a great addition to our farming enterprise,” he adds.
Tel: 02476 696629 office@texel.co.uk
Away from the farm Matt also runs a successful shearing business, with his team of five shearers clipping more than 40,000 sheep a year and Matt also working as a belly clipper at Woodhead’s Turriff abattoir during the winter months where up to 1700 lambs a day are slaughtered for Morrisons. “I’ve been lucky enough to shear for the
Ingram family at Logie Durno, so have learnt a lot from them over the years and can see how producing commercially relevant shearling rams has worked well for them. Indeed I may, if demand rises, try crossing some of the Texels with a Bluefaced Leicester tup to produce some maternal rams, as the Ingrams have done.

passion for producing top end sheep has driven Frank Rushton’s Matlock, Derbyshire-based Fresh Fields flock from its inception, with the aim always to produce pedigree tups suited to commercial customers.

“I’ve never looked to sell breeders’ tups, having always concentrated on selling tups for commercial men to breed top end prime lambs from. That doesn’t mean I’m not keen on the pedigree aspect of things and I like to show every summer, usually doing 14 or 15 shows a year. I do sell a few tups for pedigree use, but the mainstay of the tup sales are ram lambs sold at home to repeat commercial customers, with just a handful kept round to make shearlings,” explains Frank. “We sell about 90% of the tups from home with the remainder either sold at Club sales or Bakewell Ram Fair. I don’t take any rams to National Sales, but do like to get to them
whenever possible to see what’s breeding well and every now and again buy a tup to use at home,” he adds. Alongside selling rams the flock has also gained a reputation for selling top drawer females, with only 10 ewe lambs kept each year and the remainder offered for sale at the North West Texel Club’s January sale at Chelford each year. “We generally sell up to 10 ewe lambs a year and sold up to 950gns in January 2015 and average more than £500 apiece for them most years. “With both the males and females the aim is always to produce good skinned, growthy, well fleshed sheep. I am particularly keen on breeding sheep which flesh naturally rather than needing to feed a lot of flesh on to them. We can grow good grass at home and away winter our ewes and ewe lambs on local dairy ground, so they need to be able to convert grass to flesh easily without needing a bag of corn too.”

In the early days of the flock a tup from John Hedley, Red Myle Henry, left a lot of good females, with foundation ewes from the Summerwood, Castle Ashby and Lodge flocks providing a solid base for Frank to work with.

“I’ve bought in a few ewes over time at in-lamb sales, including ewes in lamb to Haltcliffe Jackpot and Clinterty Impressive from the Goldie family. One of these bred a tup I kept back to use for myself, Fresh Fields No Limits. He was the sire of Fresh Fields Outstander which sold to the Broadfields flock of the Clamp family and Fresh Field Off Limits which was bought by the Holtom family for their Spring flock. Another son, Fresh Fields On a Mission, was bought by the Mallaber family for their Grovewood flock,” explains Frank. “I largely use homebred rams from ewes with a proven track record of producing the type of sheep that perform in the flock over a number of years. Another homebred sire, Fresh Fields Tyson, a Tullagh Real Deal son, was another retained ram which did a lot of good, leaving great females and subsequently going on to work in Simon Clarke’s Dunstall flock. “I do buy the odd ram here and there to inject some fresh blood in to the flock and in recent years have bought a number of rams in partnership with local young breeder Ben Vernon, Charben Texels,

purchases include Tullagh Real Deal, Forkins Simply the best and Strathbogie Thunder. This gives access to some better breeding and allows progress in the breed,” adds Frank, Helping to publicise the flock and as part of the social side of Texel breeding Frank and his family, including his girlfriend Kerry and son Ashley, as well as Kerry’s father Philip, attend about 15 shows a year locally. “We don’t really have time for any of the big shows, but we do plenty of local one day shows and really enjoy meeting up with other breeders at them. “We’re generally fairly successful and have previously won interbreed championships at the likes of Nantwich, Cheshire and Derby shows, as well as winning the ewe lamb class at Ashbourne for 12 consecutive years.” The flock has also enjoyed significant success in the Derbyshire Texel Club’s flock competition, being champion small flock on many occasions and champion overall several times too. Lambing in mid February, ewes are usually housed about 10 days before lambing, having been on grass and feed blocks up until then. “They then have a little concentrate while housed and are straight back to grass as soon as possible after lambing, with lambs offered a little creep feed through the early months, with this cut back once they start to clear the trough. “All ewes are sponged to concentrate lambing into a short period which makes management easier. “We tend to leave lambs with the ewes until they’re about 20 weeks old and find this cuts the chances of any mastitis problems in the ewes. Ewe lambs then head away to their winter grass in mid August and come back the following April, grazing on a local dairy farm for those eight months.”

Sales highlights for the flock include shearling rams selling to 1750gns and 1500gns at Chelford, while stock from the flock have gone on to perform well in the show ring for others, including Fresh Fields Red Light, a 2010-born Fresh Field Perfection son out of a dam by Freshfields No Limits which was male champion at Three Counties in 2013 for David and Thomas Bradley-Farmer.
Frank’s son Ashley also runs a flock of pedigree North Country Cheviots, with these running alongside the commercial ewes and also enjoying show success locally in recent years, including picking up the championship at last year’s Hope Show and then carrying on to win the English National championship as well. Capping off a successful 12 months for the 13 year old was an invitation to judge at the 2016 in-lamb sale at Lockerbie which made both Frank and Ashley’s mother, Kerry, very proud.

“The flock was founded with four ewes purchased from Chelford in 1986 after my father asked Tom Williams of the Ty Hir flock to buy him some ewes at the sale. He gave Tom £1000 to spend and asked him to get four in-lamb ewes which he did. The following year he bought Ti Hyr Ripple as a ram lamb and a few more ewes from Hull House and really got the bug, particularly as he showed Ripple at a few local shows and did well with him,” explains Dafydd. can’t go to Tesco with a championship rosette and buy the groceries!” It’s a bold statement, but one which sums up the commercial and sales focus which is the driving force behind the Jones family’s Kitrob flock.
“I
For Dafydd Jones, his wife Dona and their children Tomos and Carla the Texel flock has to pay its way on their 150 acre farm or something else will take its place. “Its not easy making a living in this part of the country and having seen the suckler herd go I’m focussed on profitable farming.
www.texel.co.uk 54
“We’ve recently invested in non-farming activities, including a holiday cottage conversion here on the farm and rental properties in nearby Pwhelli and renewable energy activities and while we could have invested the same money in buying more land the return on the investment wouldn’t have been worthwhile.” So, the Kitrob flock which Dafydd admits started out as something of a hobby for his father Robin, is firmly focussed on producing tups for sale locally and breeding easily fleshed, easy kept, tight skinned females which thrive at Cefn Cae’r Ferch.
At that time the family were still milking pedigree Holsteins. With Dafydd focussed on this part of the enterprise rather than the sheep it was Robin who pushed forward with the Texels, attending a wide range of shows, both locally and further afield. “Its amazing how he found the time to do as much showing as he did, but he went far and wide, including the Royal, the Royal Welsh, Cheshire, Shropshire and West Midlands and many, many local shows.” Further additions to the flock came from the Beautry and Hull House sale along with ewes from Courthill, Annan and Llyfni and the flock soon grew to more than 100 ewes. “We had been hard on the lambs all the way through, killing anything that wasn’t going to make a breeding sheep, but even then it was surprising how quickly the numbers grew!” The purchase of Halbeath Beethoven in 1995 moved the flock on significantly, says Dafydd, with this ram lamb leaving exceptional females. “He was a great ram, full of power and scope. He carried a little bit of brown in his front legs and its probably fair to say that if he hadn’t we would never have afforded him. In his first year he served 80 ewes as we lost another
“Then in 2004 we reduced the flock to 40 ewes and started to use AI as a way to improve the flock and using semen from proven sires from other flocks. Indeed in 2005 the total value of the rams used for AI was more than £400,000, showing the calibre of the rams we were targeting at this time, with the likes of Loosebeare Imp and Craighead Hercules among the service sires that year. “Shortly after this we bought select females from Claybury, Stockton, Stonehouse, Loosebeare, Muiresk and Stainton to top up with and this combined with the use of AI really started us on the road to where we are now.

skin and delivered exactly those attributes in his progeny. His first ram lamb sold at Ruthin for 1350gns and there’s every chance we’ll go back to him for AI in due course. His daughters had great carcasses and skins, something that will never go out of fashion.”

Following that the family picked up Hull House Northern Star second hand from John Lloyd, a ram which Dafydd says once again left his mark on the flock. “He had a great carcass and brought the extra bit of breed character that we’d perhaps been lacking a little of before. Sadly he was killed fighting with Northern Light.” With a focus on the flock paying the bills Dayfdd says the family have never been afraid to sell good females to other breeders. “We’ve always looked upon the females as another potential source of income. Its all very well having good females at home, but they don’t pay the bills stood in the field. You can have the best ewe in the world, but if she loses her lamb she’s earned you nothing that year!” As a result the Kitrob flock sold females to 1050gns in 2006 and 1120gns in 2007, with the family beginning to see the benefits from using top quality tups by AI.

The family then bought a pair of ewes from the Claybury flock reduction sale, with one purchased for 1000gns and the other for 1400gns. “The 1000gns ewe had a pair in her first year, one of which sold for 1000gns and the other made 800gns, but unfortunately the 1400gns aborted her lambs that year. “The following year we put her to Hull House Northern Star and she produced Kitrob Kitty a ewe lamb we thought a lot of and showed at the Royal Welsh. Unfortunately, she wasn’t highly placed, but she had been noticed by a few people and we decided to offer her for sale at Chelford that year. Will and Elizabeth McCaffrey of the Scholars flock bought her for 1500gns and she was then first at the Royal Welsh the following year.

“They then flushed her and produced the £40,000 Scholars Twenty Twelve. Some would perhaps say we shouldn’t have sold her, but she did us a lot of good in helping to get the flock noticed and she may have never bred as well for us anyway. We’ve since bought a couple of Twenty Twelve daughters from Jim Innes at Strathbogie, so have the breeding back anyway and we used the money from her to buy a Tophill ewe at Carlisle. With this one breeding a ram lamb to 1450gns and a 900gns ewe. She’s
probably one of the best ewes we’ve bought and we have four shearling ewes lambing this year by her,” he adds. Another sheep from the Kitrob flock which has done well elsewhere is Baltier Vampire a ram bought in partnership with the Llyfni flock at Carlisle in 2014. “We loaned him to Iolo Prys Jones for AI day and he was the sire of his first prize ram lamb from the Royal Welsh which he later sold for £30,000, with another son making 4500gns at Lanark. We seem to have a habit of other people doing well with our sheep, but that’s the way it goes some times.” Adding to the flock’s development was the purchase of the Accar flock from Myfyr Evans in 2011, with these being big, powerful ewes with plenty of stretch and character. Coming with the flock was the stock tup Sportsmans Spitfire which Dafydd says has done a lot of good at Kitrob. “He was a massive sheep with great fleshing and character to him. It is perhaps only now that we’re seeing the benefits of those ewes in the flock, but they’ve definitely done us a lot of good. Spitfire was the sire of the reserve champion at the Ruthin sale this year, Kitrob Very Stylish, which sold for 1450gns and his sons always sell well.” The following year, 2012, saw the family sell Kitrob Tomos for 2800gns in Lanark to James Herdman, Northern Ireland. This son of Knock Orion goes back to one of the Claybury’s ewes, explains Dafydd. “He was a lamb we thought a lot of from an early age and his female line is one which continues to breed well for us, with Tomos’ granddam, which was bought in the belly of the Claybury ewe still in the flock today at 11 years old.” In 2012 came the opportunity to buy Spitfire’s father, Baltier Panther after a

Another tup to leave a mark has been Carran Upper Class a lamb bought for 2600gnsin 2013 at Carlisle, with Dafydd believing he has left the best females to date at Kitrob and sons selling to 1400gns. The same year saw some significant changes for the family, with the loss of 50 acres of rented grazing and the ill health of Robin leading to a major reduction of the flock and the sale of 155 females. “It wasn’t an easy decision to make, but it was without a doubt the right one. It allowed us to concentrate the breeding once again and freed up finance for investment in other projects, notably the holiday cottage on the farm and off-farm investments. We also sold the suckler herd and due to my father’s ill health I gave up cattle foot trimming so we could care for him at home. “It wasn’t easy, but it did focus our minds on making sure what we did made money. The suckler herd weren’t going to do that so they had to go and the capital from them has been used to add other income streams
Looking ahead Dafydd sees the next few years as a period of consolidation for the family and the flock, with a desire to breed a flock which can care for itself as much as possible without any major faults. “We want ewes which are correct in their feet, mouths and udders and are easy fleshing. I’m pleased to see the Society working in the area of genomics, particularly in relation to mastitis which can be an issue for some flocks and on a commercial level is a worry. “We’ve been recording for a number of years now, but I feel perhaps genomics will provide some more certainty than standard performance recording which I feel can be open to manipulation by breeders, particularly in relation to birth and eight week weights,” he adds.

for us which will pay much better in the long-term. We could have bought more land, but with even poor ground making as much as £10,000 an acre locally that wouldn’t have made any sense and we’d have been putting a big tie round our neck if we had.”

chance call to Charlie Boden in 2012. “We were needing a ram and I called Charlie on the off chance that any of his stock rams might be available. As it turned out he offered us Panther and he was too good a tup to turn down.”

Show Judges 2016 Royal Ulster Show 11th - 13th May JOHN MELLIN - HULL HOUSE
Show Judges
John is the 3rd generation of Mellins to farm at Hull House in the Yorkshire Dales with his son Duncan and wife Linda. John bought his first Texels in 1979, before this his father bred and showed Dalesbred and Swaledale Sheep, gradually the hill Sheep have all been replaced with white faces. Together they run a flock of 250 pedigree Texel ewes maintaining an emphasis on carcase and conformation. Alongside the Texels Hull House Farm carries a herd of pedigree Longhorn Cattle and flock of purebred Polled Dorset ewes. Over the years John has been fortunate to have had many successes in the show and sale ring. Supreme championships proudly won at the Royal Show twice, Royal Welsh Show three times with two interbreed championships and at the Great Yorkshire Show seven times – most recently with Langside Thunderbird in 2015. His greatest achievement in the sale ring was in 2011 at Lanark selling Space Cowboy for 32,000gns. John has judged at numerous shows and sales including the Royal Show, Royal Highland Show and the Royal Welsh Show, he has also enjoyed judging in Northern and Southern Ireland. He is greatly looking forward to judging at both Balmoral and the Devon County Show and meeting Texel friends old and new.
Royal Bath and West Show HENRY GAMBLE - SPRINGWELL TEXELS - GRS Texels have been a big part of Henry’s life since his father started the Springwell flock in 1977. The flock regularly exhibits at Balmoral Show claiming several championships and at every annual NI premier sale. One of the flock’s best achievements to date was the sale of Springwell Ulsterboy at Lanark 2013 for 38000 gns.
www.texel.co.uk
Henry has judged many shows across the British Isles from Orkney to Kilkenny including the Royal Highland Show, the Scottish Premier, the All Ireland Texel Championships and the Irish sale at Blessington. In 2012 Henry had also the honour of judging the Scottish Flock competition. More recently in July 2015, he judged at the Royal Welsh Show, Builth Wells. Henry is currently the NI director on the Society board, a position previously held by his mother Barbara. He performs his role within the Society with the support and help from his wife Alice and children Sarah and Robert. Henry is looking forward to judging at the Royal Bath and West Show 2016, particularly as it will be an inaugural visit to this show. He is excited by this opportunity for judging Texels at this prestigious event.

Show Judges Royal Highland Show ROBERT LAIRD - CAMBWELL TEXELS
Breeding commercially sound sheep that appeal to a large number of buyers is the aim at Cambwell where Robert along with wife Joyce are assisted by their two daughters, Amy & Kim. The farm runs suckler cows and commercial ewes with the offspring finished or sold for breeding. Robert has judged at the Royal Ulster, Norfolk & Dublin shows as well as the Great Yorkshire, Premier sales in Worcester, Wales and Blessington as well as Club sales in Chelford, Lanark, Carlisle, Longtown and the Kelso Recorded section. Robert states that flock competitions have been the most enjoyable to judge, where he has viewed Texels, met proud owners on their own farms in a wide diversity of land types. They have always been extremely interesting and informative, from the Highland Club in the North to Derbyshire and the endurance test that is the Northern Ireland flock Comp. Judging the Highland will be a great honour; Cambwell has bred two reserve champions and a winner in every class at some point over the years including the recorded class seven times, three of which were out the same ewe.
Tel: 02476 696629 office@texel.co.uk
After leaving School 1985 Robert Laird has maintained his enthusiasm for the Texel breed that his Father had when he was a last minute participant in the first Importation in 1973.
The flock has enjoyed many selling highlights, but at Lanark 2003, seven ram lambs were sold to average 11000gns with a top of 50,000gns for Cambwell Jacobite and in 2007 a Cambwell Laird Daughter made 16,000gns. In 2015 26 sheep were exported to Switzerland, Holland and Italy.

Nigel has run the Ballynadrenta Flock with his brother Dennis since 1982, alongside the texels they run a commercial flock mostly mules crossed to the texel , with 200 head of cattle. Over the years Nigel has had the privilege to judge Royal Dublin, All Ireland Show , The Royal Show, The Royal Welsh , Royal Manx plus many other county shows , but it is indeed a great honour to be asked to judge The Great Yorkshire. Nigel is looking forward to meeting friends of old and hopes some new and can’t wait to see everyone in July.
Royal Welsh Show GORDON GRAY - ETTRICK - GGH After winning the prestigious RHAS Stockman of the Year in 1981, where the training sessions allowed privileged access to many UK top herds and flocks, Gordon’s appetite was whetted to producing his own pedigree stock. Having seen imported Texels at Heathery Hall, he decided that they were the breed for him and these early purchases that started off as a hobby in 1982, formed the mainstay of the pedigree side of the farming business today, running 100 ewes, plus recipients. During 2009-2011 he served as Society chairman and president having previously been the Scottish Club chairman. Gordon has judged the RHAS and the RUAS, he has also enjoyed judging the Scottish, Welsh and NI National Sales as well as Blessington and in 2013 was honoured to judge the French National Texel Show. At the The Royal Show Gordon was thrilled to take top honours in both 2002 and 2003, and is a regular exhibitor at The Royal Highland and the Great Yorkshire as well as supporting as many local shows as possible. And although never having shown at the The Royal Welsh Show, Gordon has been a regular visitor and has been a vendor at Builth Wells and the Welsh National sales since 1991 as well as a few sojourns to the old Arms Park!
www.texel.co.uk
Sales-wise, two of their top priced rams have themselves gone on to sell ‘sale toppers’ namely the 36,000gns Ettrick Jackpot, who sired the 110,000gns Newhill Major and 16,000gns Ettrick Glenmorangie who sired the then record priced Craighead Hercules at 50,000gns. Gimmers have been sold up to 26,000gns in 2011. At Sunnycroft they also run a small herd of pedigree AA cattle, winning the reserve supreme champion at the famous Perth Bull sales in 2009. Over the years Gordon says he has been given tremendous support from his wife Christine and twin daughters, Isla and Lisa. Nowadays the running of the farm is shared with son, David, who also operates his own pregnancy scanning business. Gordon states “I’ve never once regretted my decision in choosing Texels and to be invited to judge at the Royal Welsh Show fulfils a long held ambition and is a tremendous honour, where the sheep and exhibitors are always first class”.

National Show & Sale Judges 2016 Scottish National Show & Sale BRUCE RENWICK - CASTLECAIRN – RNA
National Show & Sale Judges 2015
Having been brain washed by the grandfather of the breed, Keith Jamieson, the Castlecairn flock was founded in 1993. The main aim at Castlecairn has always been producing top quality sheep aimed at the pedigree market which has the added bonus of the fun and frolics associated with the social side of the Society. With four little helpers to aid me with the sheep, Fabienne, Zara, Fletcher and Richie are all keen to get stuck in, with the “dad tasks”. The flock currently runs alongside 700 milking cows at Legars in the Scottish Borders. Notable highs in our 20 year involvement with Texels have included winning The Royal Highland Show, the Scottish National Show and Sale, the English National Show and Sale and the Solway and Tyne Club Sale at Carlisle, with a sale high of 52,000gns for Castlecairn Irn Bru. It is particularly pleasing to see our stock go on to breed for new owners. I’m greatly looking forward to judging at Lanark and will enjoy every moment of it.
Northern Ireland National Show & Sale TOMOS EVANS - WELSH FLOCK - ESW Tomos Evans runs the Welsh flock alongside his father Selwyn. Sheep have always been his passion and when nine years of age at the Royal Welsh Show he bought quite independently a ewe lamb from the Llyfni flock.
www.texel.co.uk 118
2014 was an especially good year for the flock when a shearling ewe was female and reserve overall champion at the English National Sale and sold for 7000gns. In addition the flock won the South Wales Progeny Show, the Dyfed Flock competition and the show at the early NSA Sale with a shearling ewe by Cairness Ranger. The flock also took championships at the South Wales Club Sale, the Dyfed Club in lamb sale and the South Wales Club in lamb sale. 2015 was also very successful for the Welsh flock winning champion Female and Male in the South Wales Club Sale and selling ewe lambs to 1200gns at Carlisle in the December Twilight Sale. Alongside the Texels, Tomos runs a commercial flock and a pedigree Limousin herd. He and his parents have also established a prize winning farm tourism business. Tomos has purchased excellent stock from Northern Ireland in the past and is looking forward to seeing what is on offer this year.
Much success has ensued in shows, sales and competitions; winning small flock competitions and the supreme champion twice and reserve champion five times at the Northern Area Sale. Showing has always been seen as an important ‘shop window’ for the Loxley flock and John has been a regular supporter of local shows along with the Great Yorkshire show. The ultimate goal of winning the championship at the Gt.Yorkshire being achieved in the Millennium year, with a Shearling Gimmer. He is a Council member of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and on the Sheep Committee for the Gt.Yorkshire show. John is a longstanding member of the Northern Area Club being a committee member as Treasurer. Whilst enjoying the pedigree side of the breed, John is always mindful of the commercial traits and qualities that the breed was first imported for. To this end he take great pleasure in producing prime lamb to a high standard for sale into local markets. John enjoys the challenge and responsibility of judging and has presided over many shows across the UK and Northern Ireland. He is always pleased and privileged to be asked to make judgement over other members’ sheep. Texel’s have been a big part of John’s life over a great many years, and he has enjoyed the opportunity to meet a great many people from all walks of life and all areas of the UK. He hopes to continue the success of the Loxley Texel Flock in future years, along with the assistance of his wife, Alison and children Isobel, aged six and John, four.
Welsh National Show & Sale ROLAND WATKINS - CWMCERRIG - WJJ Born and bred at Cwmcerrig, one of 13 children Roland’s family firmly established the flock in 2000. Highlights are Cwmcerrig Topper, 1st prize ram lamb at the Royal Welsh 2012, selling to an Irish consortium for 4200gns at Lanark. That flush resulted in four lambs sold to average 2000gns and five sisters, the backbone of the flock. Females have sold to 3000gns at Lanark in 2014. The flock concentrates on flushing a small core of the best ewes. Breeding priorities are skins, tops, heads, hind quarters and a leg at each corner. In 2008 the decision was made to adapt the fruit and veg business and build a farm shop which opened in 2009 with 20 staff. Roland’s son William is head butcher and daughters Maria and Rosie work in the shop, part of 20 family members employed in a staff of 50.”

John was first introduced to Texel sheep in 1984 through his parents flock and 1987 saw them purchase their first stock ram from the NATSB club sale. His own Loxley flock was begun in 1990 with his first ram lamb (Loxley Will Scarlet) being sold at Lanark in 1992 for 1600 guineas to the Sportsman’s Flock.

Kelso - Builth Wells his year’s winner of the PRT shield at Kelso for the flock with the best average for a pen of performance recorded shearling rams was the Gray family’s Langside flock which recorded an impressive average of £1527 for their pen of 28 shearlings. The Gray family also won the shield in 2013.
In second place was previous winner Cefyn Pryce, who sold 10 rams from the Caereinion flock to average £1200.15 and another former winner, Michael James of the Duhonw flock then came in third with his pen of 12 averaging £802.37.
Taking second spot was Malcolm Coubrough, Hartside, with an average of £1426 for 14 sold and in third were the Clark family, Garngour, with their pen of nine selling to level at £1423.

But it was a twist of fate that resulted in them selling shearlings at Kelso in the first place, as Malcolm Coubrough explains: “We had been selling lambs every year, until 2001, when foot and mouth meant we couldn’t sell that year’s crop, so we kept them and took them to Kelso the following year as shearlings. They sold really well, and we’ve concentrated on the shearling market ever since.” The family runs an extensive, mainly hill farming business in South Lanarkshire, but the Texels are kept at Hartside, near Biggar, where Malcolm is based with his wife Audrey and their children, Emily and Charlie. There, along with shepherd, Gordon McDougall, they farm 1800 acres, with a flock of 680 Blackfaces bred pure and a further 400 which are put to the Bluefaced Leicester to produce Scotch Mules. There’s also an 80-cow suckler herd. Sportsmans Unbeatable Stock Gimmers
Primarily Blackface sheep breeders, the Coubroughs were first encouraged to buy into Texels by family friend and well known Texel enthusiast, Jimmy Warnock. The flock was established in 1993 with the purchase of some Watchknowe females from Jimmy – one in particular, a Craighead Thunder daughter, is responsible for the backbone of the flock today, says Malcolm. “We also bought a Cambwell ewe in the early days, by Cambwell Hero II, and she bred really well for us, producing several four-figure priced shearlings, up to £2500. We flushed her as an older ewe and she bred tremendous carcase and skins,” he adds. Those qualities, along with length and locomotion, have been the main breeding goals within the Texel flock at Hartside, and stock rams that have helped them along the way include Claybury Emperor, Cambwell Keystone and Sheoch Perfection – all particularly good female breeders. More recently, Midlock Striker produced shearlings to £3400 and Sportsmans Unbeatable bred lambs up to 7000gns and shearlings at £6000 and £4000.
Tel: 02476 696629 office@texel.co.uk
ince the Hartside flock’s beginnings in the early 1990s, the aim has been to produce commercially viable sheep with particular focus on skins and carcase – traits that have ensured the Coubrough family’s consignment regularly achieves one of the best Texel averages at the Kelso Ram Sales.

“There’s been a noticeable change towards many people buying their stock rams at Kelso in recent years, so although our main focus is on the commercial attributes, the tups also need to have great presence and the ability to catch the buyer’s eye, so breed character is important too,” says Malcolm. “We keep that in mind when selecting a stock tup, and the Sportsmans tup has been a particularly successful choice – his shearlings last year were some of the breediest we’ve sold and we’re really pleased with his daughters too.” In fact, last year’s batch of 14 shearlings (mostly Unbeatable sons) levelled out at £1426, with the pen leader, Hartside Vantastic, making £6000 to the Cowal flock. In a bid to open up the market further, for the past two years, Malcolm has also been performance recording the flock. “It was becoming obvious that many of the Kelso buyers were looking for more information about the tups, so I felt it was important to start recording. People definitely do look and study the figures in the pens, whereas before, those buyers would walk past without a glance,” he says.
www.texel.co.uk 136
CSI1400686 - Hartside Vagabond
Keeping that in mind, Malcolm’s stock tups bought last year boasted impressive figures to boot – Haddo Whisky Galore has an index of 448 and Strawfrank Wambo Rambo’s is 396. “I’d never buy a tup purely on figures, but I certainly do look at them now and if there’s one I like, with good
figures too, then that’s ideal.” The majority of the flock’s stock tups are bought as lambs at Lanark and, in recent years, Malcolm has returned there as a seller too. In 2014 he sold Hartside Volt and Hartside Viper at 7000gns and 1800gns respectively, both out of a gimmer that had been purchased privately from Garngour the previous year.
Sportsmans Unbeatable sired shearlings Left to right £900 - £1100 & £850
“The main aim with the Texels is to continue producing tups that are suitable for today’s commercial market and that will help maximise returns for their buyers. Kelso will always be the key focus and we hope to increase our consignment there to around 20 each year, but if we have lambs that we think are suitable for the Lanark sale, then that’s a bonus,” explains Malcolm. There are no plans to buy in any more females, but Malcolm does flush a few of the best ewes each year, to help accelerate the growth of the flock. Ewe numbers are now sitting at 40, with plans to increase that to 50, to hopefully allow for selling some females in the future. They are lambed from the end of February, having been AI’d, to ensure completion before the calving and the Blackface lambing get underway. “One of the best things about Texel sheep is their versatility – they fit really well into our hill farm system and they are easy sheep to keep. For us, they started off as a hobby, but they’ve grown into an integral part of the business,” adds Malcolm.

015 highest pen average PRT Shield winners - Builth Wells
A strong female base from noted flocks, including Muiresk and Ettrick have been the cornerstone of the Logie Durno flock and hence the Granite flock, with the Ingrams. “These ewes have definitely left a mark on the flock and thanks to judicious use of embryo transfer we have been able to extend the influence of the best families quite rapidly.
Winning the PRT shield for the performance recorded flock with the highest pen average at the main NSA Sale, Builth Wells, in 2015 were Gregor and Bruce Ingram of the Granite flock, Aberdeenshire, when their pen averaged £1614.37 for four sold.
“ET gives us the chance to fast track the genetic progress of the flock, producing more females from the top performing ewes and also means we have top quality rams to sell to our commercial customers. It’s a win-win situation and definitely suits our philosophy of breeding from the best.”
The Ingram brothers’ flock was established four years ago with embryos from the family’s Logie Durno flock which was founded in 1999 to run alongside the family’s other pedigree and commercial sheep flocks.
And this mantra extends to the sires too, with a desire to buy the best rams the family can afford, again focussing on rams with the traits their customers are looking for whenever possible. “Length, good skins, easy fleshing and mobility are our four top criteria. It’s important to breed rams we can sell, but equally important to ensure we have good quality females coming through as replacements too”.
“We established the Granite flock with a view to selling shearling rams at sales, with the Logie Durno flock concentrating on selling rams off farm in our annual sale,” explains Gregor Ingram. “In the earlier days of the Logie Durno flock we did dabble with producing ram lambs for the pedigree market, selling to a top of 12,000gns at Lanark in 2008 and 11,000gns at Carlisle in the same year. Since then we have changed our breeding goals considerably, focussing on breeding rams
“One of the more influential sires to be used was Langside New Approach, a ram bought at Kelso in 2008 for £5000. He was really the first ram we bought with a focus on commercial attributes. He bred well balanced sheep with good width and fleshing, but we soon came to realise that we needed to try and increase the size in the flock to breed rams capable of leaving
As a large proportion of the ewes in the flock are now related to Titan we needed some new blood. So in 2015 we went to Lanark and purchased Deveronvale Warrior for 19,000gns with Humeston and Midlock. Now in 2016, we are convinced buying Warrior will be the best decision we have made. As a shearling ram he is by far the biggest, longest and tallest Texel we have seen with tremendous style. The first lambs born at the end of March are his doubles. With their commercially minded approach the Ingrams have always paid attention to EBVs when sourcing tups, but are careful in their approach. “We firmly believe performance figures have a lot to offer when used correctly, we pay particular attention to growth rate and muscle,
KWJ1200386 - Haddo Titan
On the management front no ewes are fed concentrates before or after lambing, with ewes lambing from the end of March onwards and lambs are not creep fed. “Ram lambs are then run on grass through to the turn of the year before being strip grazed on stubble turnips through the second half of the winter and fed a mix of silage and draff alongside this. “They are then put back to grass in spring with only those sheep destined for sales fed. Those being sold from home are run on grass alone and receive no special attention ahead of our on-farm sale.”
G & B Ingram - Granite Texels
Possibly the most influential ram to date is Haddo Titan, a massive lamb with a great index too and threw lambs with length and size. He really transformed the flock and a large proportion of both the Granite and Logie Durno flocks are now related to him and a son, Granite Untouchable retained for our own use.”

enomic indices are becoming of significant commercial importance. At Texel Society we are pioneering the development of our “breed specific genomic reference population” which is expected to contain 15,000 informative genotypes by 2019. Also, by creating more accurate data collection methods for hard to measure commercial traits and combined with our pedigrees and genomic information (DNA data), breeders and producers will become more informed on an individual’s carcase and health traits.

Our Progressive History.
www.texel.co.uk
Investment is a new game changer for the UK livestock industry, which historically has been slow to change and embrace new technology. The Societies strength is its ability to galvanise individual flocks to cooperate with one another; to attract funding; exploit opportunities and manage emerging threats at both a breed and industry level. Individual flocks working alone, are often under resourced and in a technological age are likely to be less influential. The benefits and value that Society provides, to drive innovation and lead collaboration should not be under estimated or underutilised. A recent example of innovation is the Society focus on genomic technologies. In 2010, 390 influential sires were selected and tested using the novel 50K SNP High
140
Density Chip, in collaboration with Agresearch New Zealand and SRUC. This propelled the Society down the genomic pathway, with the creation of what is becoming a major asset for the Society. Supporting the delivery of new breeding information for its membership, the “British Texel Genomic Reference Population” is an essential resource of DNA profiles (genotypes) for the Society, to provide genomic estimated breeding values, across a number of important commercial carcase and heath traits. Creating a genomic reference population In 2015 a successful bid, in collaboration with SRUC, to InnovateUk, provided £450,000 of research funding from the Governments innovation agency. Additionally, a further £120,000 investment in High Density ram genotyping using the 700K High Density Chip, has provided a major enhancement to the Reference population. This has fast tracked the Society genomic programme, further developments will provide the 17K SNP Low Density Chip (containing 17,000 Snps – parts of the animals DNA) as a matter of routine. Providing a more affordable and informative solution. Using genomics to manage health traits. With the use of genomics the aim is to introduce genomic breeding values (gEBVs) to help Texel breeders and the wider sheep industry, by breeding sheep with inherent resistance to both mastitis and footrot. This is different to, for example scrapie

Trait heritability The dotted line represents the number of new animals genotyped in the very latest carcase traits project. This will give reliabilities around 70% for new carcass traits with heritability (h2) of >0.2. For disease and other traits with h2 ~ 0.1, a Texel reference population of 6,000 genotyped animals will give a reliability of 60%. Allowing commercial delivery of genomic breeding values. For genomic selection to work effectively, large-scale phenotyping is needed so that sufficient number of animals yields robust (more accurate) genomic predictions of merit (GEBV estimation). Figure 1 shows the number of animals needed for genomic selection, according to different levels of reliability, (D. Berry, J Conington pers. comm, following Goddard and Hayes, 2009). resistance, which only requires a single marker to be identified on the genome. Meaning that, for footrot and mastitis, the use of genomic selection, where footrot and mastitis records are combined with wholegenome data and pedigree, to produce gEBV’s, is likely to be the most effective method to breed sheep that have more resistant to these diseases. More information can be found in the Society publication “Texel -Genomics of Disease Resistance”.
The need for increased volume and accuracy of data collection The Society’s’ nucleus of highly connected pedigree recorded flocks, operating as phenotyping farms for collection of hard to measure health trait data provide a useful addition to the highly successful PRT (Performance Recorded Texel) initiative, operating since the early nineties and currently providing an extensive data from around 9,000 ewes and from 14,000 lambs per year, primarily weight and ultrasound

measurements. The Society also provides support for CT Scanning for the production of a variety of conventional breeding values (EBVs).
Driving Innovation
Looking to the future, great stockmanship injected with science is key to farming’s future. It is now important more than ever to develop dialogue between farmers and researchers and the Society is well positioned to lead this. Utilising the latest technologies combined with our pedigrees, British Texel productivity traits can be improved, with accurate measurements (phenotypic data) pushed into genotype evaluations. With a focus on hard to measure traits for health-welfare and meat quality, the Society will create a number of key genomic indices of economic importance, complementing the current EBVS on offer.
Gene-Tex DNA profiles In parallel to the Society led research projects, routine DNA profiling of both ET donors and sires, is carried by members. This initiative will be developed to allow for routine genotyping across informative sires in the population.

Texel Society as lead partner. It will support genetic improvements systems using; Computer Tomography (CT Scanning);VIA – Video Imaging Analysis (now mainstream in many beef abattoirs); and the British Texel Genomic Reference population.
Harnessing carcase phenotyping traits and condemnation data At the time of going to press the Society received some exciting news, with the successful award for a new InnovateUk grant “Carcass trait phenotype feedback for genomic selection in Texel sheep”. This industrial award, in collaboration with SRUC and a leading processor, provides a 3 year and £1.6M project to support the
As a result of these developments; more accurate recording systems; utilising genomic technologies, this will help future proof Society services, adding value to pedigree Texel and help commercial farmers across the UK reduce costs, at the same time as sustainably improving output

Derbyshire Club 2015 has seen the continuous growth of the Derbyshire Texel Club and it has been another enjoyable year for us all.
Derbyshire Club
he beginning of January marked the start to our year with the Christmas party with over 75 members in attendance, entertainment was in the form of a comedian and we even saw Robert Cartledge perform the YMCA.
T
May brought us to our annual club trip, this year over to Northern Ireland for three days. It was yet again an excellent turnout which furthermore indicates our club heading in the right direction. Whilst there we visited some fantastic flocks including; Forkins, Ballynahone, Drumgooland, Foyle View, Tamnamoney, Straidarran, Cornerstone and Braehead. We were all overwhelmed by the kindness and hospitality we received at each of these visits. Our trip also included a visit to Ballymena Show before a steady coach ride down to Southern Ireland, visiting the National Horse Stud before flying home from Dublin Airport. A special mention must go to Alastair Gault and Alison McDonald for your excellent work and organisation in arranging the trip. Along with Frank and Kerry who yet again have provided us all with another brilliant weekend.
www.texel.co.uk
The Open Day was hosted at our family farm this year with over 200 members, family and friends who joined us for what was a fantastic day. I took the Championship with a ewe lamb and the Boden family took reserve with a shearling ewe. Welly wanging proved the main attraction with a father son battle commencing between Charlie and Tom Boden. Tom finally winning with a 97 metre throw. Possibly one of the best wangers around
Our flock competition in August was kindly judged this year by Jeff Aiken, Procters. Yet again another great entry of flocks along with an excellent turnout for the presentation evening with myself; Charben Texels, taking champion flock, Andrew Weston, Limestone flock, in reserve and Stuart Talbot, Jenah, winning best novice flock. September saw our annual club sale at Bakewell; Ron Darlington and Emma Sparkes did a fantastic job in all aspects of organisation and sponsorship for the sale. Although trade was patchy, reflective of a difficult year in the sheep industry, quality was there for us all to see. A thank you must go to Anna Minnice-Hughes for judging and congratulations to Haydn Fletcher taking the championship with a ram lamb and to the Barnes family taking reserve with a ewe lamb later bought by the judge. A special mention must go this year to Janet Young who has retired from the position of Club Secretary; Janet has been the backbone of the club for over the last 20 years and without all her hard work and dedication I’m sure the club wouldn’t be here today, “Thankyou Janet”. The continuous growth and development of our club is all down to the dedication of our committee members and members alone. A lot of time and effort is spent in organising these events throughout the year to make it the success it has been over the past few years. Finally I would like to thank everyone for all their hard work for 2015 and wish all the best for a happy and prosperous 2016.

Dyfed Texel Breeders Report 2015 he club kicked off the year with its first annual dinner an informal and enjoyable affair held at the Cottage Inn, Llandeilo. This was followed in May by another first, our first Progeny Show; this was held in Carmarthen Market and was judged by Nicola Hartwright of the Whitehart flock. Taking top honours from the 19 pens present were a pair of lambs from the Cwmcerrig flock of DJJ Watkins & Co which were sired by Knap Vinnie Jones.

for the show champion. This was a Knock Upshot gimmer put forward by the Davies’ of the Teilo Flock to cap off a memorable year, and she was knocked down to the judge for the evening, Gwilym Williams (Treweren).
In June we held our flock competition, John & Linda Mellin of the Hull House flock spent two glorious days travelling around the countryside of West Wales, before meeting up for a presentation evening where John Eirian and Lynwen Davies of the Teilo flock took the champion flock award. Prior to the sale season getting underway we held our Ram & Ewe Safari. This year we visited the Ifan Ddu, Cwmcerrig,Teilo, Steddfa, Stelfox and Solbury flocks to view their offerings for the forthcoming National and NSA sales. A pleasant afternoon of viewing members stock was concluded by an entertaining evening at the St Brides Inn in the beautiful coastal village of Little Haven.
www.texel.co.uk
The sale season came and went with the usual anticipation and excitement and a number of members sold stock for four figure sums, but top price for Dyfed Club members this year was 2200gns for Teilo Wrnach Gawr, sold by John Eirian & Lynwen Davies at the Main NSA Sale in Builth Wells. This Deveronvale Viscount son was an ET brother to a lamb that the Davies’ exported to France in a private deal earlier in the year.
Cai Davies holding the Champion from Teilo and top price at 1,080gns with club chairman Alfryn Davies (Ifan Ddu) and judge Gwilym Williams (Treweren)
2016 promises plenty, as a club we continue to develop our programme of events to promote the breed in the locality and this year in addition to our current events we have nominated the Cothi Bridge Show on the 28th May as our club show. Also on September the 8th we will be holding our first ram sale in Carmarthen Market. Before signing off we would like to wish good luck to one of our founder members, Roland Watkins of the Cwmcerrig flock who will be judging at the Welsh National Sale in Welshpool this year. All the best for 2016
Then in December we held our in lamb ewe sale, another successful sale was held in Ffairfach, and the sale topped at 1080gns

The Dyfed Texel Club
Gloucester & Border Counties Club As I write this it occurs to me that the Gloucester club seems to be settling into a program of similar events each year. AGM with skittles, even less business and no better at knocking pins down! Our longstanding secretary Carol Houldey retired, our thanks to Carol for her efficiency and determination, but for which I am sure some events would not have taken place. Paul King has been press ganged into the role; please give Paul a ring with any enquiries. James Kimber takes over as chair, so at least the meetings will be run properly now. A night out at the dog track saw a lot of long faces and empty pockets, except Trevor Prew who won’t tell us his secret.
We kindly invited ourselves to view Paul and Anna Johnsons’ Corriecravie Flock, which had won the 2015 EBLEX BRP most improved Texel flock award. Quality in depth, was the only way to describe the sheep we saw, it was a privilege to see what can be achieved when true stockmanship and a clear aim and direction come together. Thanks to the Johnsons for putting up with us and giving us a fantastic lunch, the weather wasn’t kind but the company was.
Sales and shows Members were out in force at the Royal Three Counties promoting the breed, not only with sheep, but also winning the best
breed stand with the help of Kathy Kings’ eye catching professional touch. Trade at our annual ram sale at Worcester was best described as steady, but solid, while the in lamb sale continues from strength to strength, more sheep sold with a higher average, our in lamb sale is open to all society members so bring and buy. Sadly Neal Dowler passed away after a long illness, Neal, with his father, started the Crimscote flock in the early 80s, the flock joined the sire reference scheme and recording remained an important aspect in the flock’s development. Neal was a quiet person, who liked to stand back and study form; he had a great depth of knowledge when it came to blood lines and was very definite in his view that sheep should live on grass. I had the pleasure of discussing the flock’s future and which tups should be used with him just before he died. For those of you who have never heard of the Crimscote flock; Loosebeare Imps dam was by Crimscote Bard. So the chances are that most flocks will have a touch of Neal’s breeding. And finally check out the club’s Facebook page to see what we get up to. All the best for 2016 and may all your lambs be champions.

Our flock competition was kindly judged by Adrian and Amanda Windsor, a very enjoyable tour round on a hot day thanks to everyone for their hospitality and the opportunity to see some great sheep, congratulations to all those who were placed. If you ever need to bribe Adrian try elderflower cordial, not sure if it would work in January though.

We started the year with our annual flock visit at the end of May when we visited the flocks of Procters Farm, Tophill, Sportsman and Brackenridge where we viewed four outstanding flocks, each putting on a wonderful show of sheep. An enjoyable weekend was had by all and the warm welcome and hospitality which we received at each farm was much enjoyed. he next event was our stockjudging competitions and barbecue which was well attended and held at East Kirk, Bower, Caithness (by kind permission of Charles and Irene Ryrie). We judged several classes of Texel shearlings and gimmers along with a class of heifers. Our master judge was Kenneth Sutherland, Sibmister, Thurso. From an excellent selection of sheep he awarded the champion to an impressive ram Ffrwd Van Persie. He was bred by Dewi Evans ,Tyddyn y Ffrwd, Moelfre, and later went on to be sold for a club record price. He was purchased by Iwan Parry Jones, Llawes. This year we had a new cup for the female champion, the Tom Kellet Perpetual Cup. This was presented to the club by Eurwen Kellet in memory of her late husband. Tom was a keen supporter of the Club and a good friend to all of us. Brian awarded the cup to this year’s female champion, a shearling ewe from John and Heulwen Thomas, Bryn Garth. The first prize ram lamb was Llawes Wacky Backy from Iwan Parry Jones and the first prize ewe lamb was from John Ll.Owen, Hen Gapel.
The sale itself went very well. The demand for shearling rams was strong and the ram lambs sold well. The shearling ewes were down a bit, but there was an excellent clearance overall and everyone went home with a smile on their face.
Flock Competition Robin Ellis from the Ruthin Club judged the flock competition for us this year at the beginning of July. The weather was wet, but it didn’t dampen our spirits and we spent an enjoyable day travelling round between the flocks that had entered. Robin awarded the champion flock to Huw and Iwan Williams, Llyfni. They also won the prizes for the best pen of five ram lambs and the best pen of five ewe lambs. Runners up were Osian Rhys, Seiont, and Alwyn Phillips, Pengelli. We visited Danny and Paula Creer’s Ballaglonney Flock and saw a tremendous show of ewes, with great tops and ends, just right for breeding shearling rams. The Kermode family also invited us to view their Orrisdale Flock, which were full of style and breed character. A huge thank you must go to both our hosts for the wonderful hospitality they provided and for allowing us to see stock of tremendous quality. On the Sunday morning we had a ‘steady’ tour around the Island .... A good time had been enjoyed by all.

In June, eight members attended the five Nations weekend hosted by the Irish Texel Young Breeders Club which included a range of competitions and attending the All Ireland Championships in Dundalk on the Sunday, a great weekend was had by all and at the NSA event held in Ballymena at the start of July, the NITYB assisted the Youth Development Programme Committee by manning the stand to promote young breeders and the Northern Ireland Texel Young Breeders Club. At Antrim show on Saturday 25th July, Texel Young Breeders under the age of 18 had the opportunity to compete in two classes for the D. Hamill trophy. Judge Stephanie McCollam’s champion was Ben Robinson with Baillie O’Connor in reserve. The NITYB were asked once again to cater with a BBQ at the Texel open night at the home on Paul, Tina and Baillie O’Connor, Drumgooland flock. We must thank the O’Connor family for allowing us to be a part of this night as well as running our sports night in conjunction with this. Their help and support in the run up to the event and the publicity we received is greatly appreciated. A special thanks also to Tina for providing some delicious Pavlova’s for the
members to sell on the night. Thanks must also go to Ian Millar of Millar Meats for providing us with the meat for the BBQ. In August, at the National Sale in Ballymena Market, we held our Texel young breeders ram lamb class. We also had English Young Breeder Gareth Foxhall judge our Elite ewe lamb class at the National. At the NI Texel dinner dance and prizegiving in the Slieve Donard in November, NITYB Secretary Christina McCollam was awarded the NITYB President’s trophy for best member for her dedication and involvement with the NITYB and the Texel sheep breed. Adrian Liggett was also voted on as YDP chairman for the next five years, congratulations to you both. Special thanks must go to all those who have helped and supported us throughout the year and to the Society for their continued support in providing prizes and rosettes for the NITYB throughout the year and for their support in our ewe lamb class and sale at the NI National. It has been another successful year for Ruthin Texel Club. The Club was well represented at National and Local shows. Several members of our Club had a successful Royal Welsh Show. I would like to congratulate Iolo Jones, Llangwm Texels who won reserve male champion with his ram lamb. ur flock competition this year was judged by James Ruggeri of Gyrhos Texels. The standard was high, and the overall champion was Iolo Jones of Llangwm Texels. Iolo then went on to win the All Wales Texel Flock Competition.

The Club show and sale was held in September and was judged by Mr Steve Smith of Penparc Texels. Champion was awarded to Iwan Jones of Llawes Texels for his ram lamb. Top price of ÂŁ2100 went to L T & F A Jones of Rhiwlas Texels for their ram lamb. A good sale average and clearance was achieved at the sale in a difficult year in the sheep industry. The AGM and annual presentation was held at Nant y Felin, Llanrhaeadr, in December. It was well attended and a great way to end a successful year.
Finally I would like to mention the tragic passing of Aled Jones, Peniel Texels. He was a valued committee member and will be sorely missed by us all at the Club. A new competition of best consignment of five or more ram lambs was held at the sale this year in memory of Aled. My reign as chairman has come to an end. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all committee member and staff at the Ruthin livestock market for all their hard work and support during the last three years.

June was a busy month. We held the progeny competition which was judged by Tom Evans of the Welsh Flock. The overall champion was Will and Liz McCaffrey’s ewe lamb of the Scholar’s flock, which was also champion at Shropshire Show. Tony and Barbara Wright did an excellent job of judging the young handlers class. The prime lamb competition held at Shrewsbury market, again had a good entry of quality lambs which sold at a premium. The three day trip saw 12 of us board a ferry over to Ireland. On the Friday afternoon and Saturday we visited a total of four flocks, including the Oberstown flock of Pat and Barry Farrell. On the Sunday we were invited to the Irish National Texel Championships at Dundalk Show. It was a busy weekend which I hope everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

On the last weekend of June, we held our annual flock competition, which this year was judged by David Nesbitt of the Alwent flock. The overall winner was Robert Pierce and the Oldford flock. Congratulations to you Robert! In August we held our one day trip which saw us visit Jim and Nicola Hartwright’s flock, the Whitehart flock. This trip was again well attended. We saw some good sheep and received excellent hospitality.
The Shrewsbury sale was judge by Cefin Pryce of the Caereinion flock. Cefin chose a yearling ram from the Clun flock of Messers AE Williams & Son as his champion, which sold for 1000gns. Reserve was a shearling ewe from M & S Jones (Racecourse flock) which sold for 2100gns. Our main Welshpool sale was held on 1st October and was judged by Phillip Evans of the Ffostyll flock. Phillip placed a yearling ram from the Canllefaes flock of WT Davies as overall champion, which made 850gns. The highest priced lamb was presented by AE Williams & Son of the Clun flock, selling for 1600gns. The in-lamb ewe sale was held at Welshpool Market in December. This was judged by Geoff Morgan of the Blaencar flock who later purchased the champion from Robert Pierce (Oldford flock) for 4300gns. I would like to thank the committee members, and especially Shirley for pointing me in the right direction and for helping me make my first year as chairman a success.

Our first outing of the year was to North Sheep, which was held in our area and with a tremendous show of commercial lambs from Brian Harrison, Becks Farm, which together with some tea and traybake attracted a good number of people to the stand. We didn’t manage to have a club trip this year, but it was ably made up for with a flock visit and stockjudging to Peter Woof’s Stainton Flock near Kendal. The Woof family could not have been more welcoming and there was a great turnout to see some outstanding stock and enjoy a hog roast and get together afterwards. Thanks you to everyone who helped. The local shows, despite being wet, were all well supported by members and before we knew where we were the rain stopped for a bit and the sales were upon us. Our first sale at Carlisle was judged by Henry Gamble with J & H Clarks’ Performance recorded lamb taking the championship and a top price of 14,000gns going to D & S MacPhersons’ ram lamb. The second sale saw judge Ryan Bradley’s champion from Andrew Hambleton also make top price of 2200gns. The in lamb sale in December also held its own with averages back a bit on
last year, like most breeding sales, but still a good turnout of sheep and buyers and Ryan Bradley this time took the championship and top price, judged by Giles Pyman. The dry weather was short lived and Agri Expo at Carlisle, while cold was well attended as usual and there was a great deal of interest from new members and “old” members alike. We currently have over 360 members and anyone wishing to join the club from outside of our club area has to go on a waiting list which currently stands at around 40. One of the most successful things the club has done this year, is to create its new website and linked Facebook page, where all of our sales, shows and news items appear regularly to keep members up to date. Anything going on in our club is on the website and Facebook simultaneously, so take a look and keep in touch. You can find all of our show reports, sale reports, pictures and news on there, together with catalogues and diary dates so you can keep up with us www.solwayandytynetexels.co.uk It’s been a tough year in our area weather wise and our thoughts are with our members and friends who have suffered in the floods. There has been an enormous number of sheep lost and an enormous number of incidences of neighbours helping one another which makes us all proud to be Northerners. Finally a big thank you to everyone who has helped throughout my first year in keeping me right. Keep it up!

trip as it was a good experience. Over the three days that I was there we had some great guest speakers and some really good presentations. It was really good to listen to speakers from Ireland, Scotland and Norway and get a feel for how sheep genetics are helping flocks and seeing how different systems work for them. It was great to meet so many different people at the meeting and listen to advice and how other people use genetics was very interesting. Also meeting up with a number of other Texel breeders was great and useful to make more contacts, people were also inviting the South East Club to come for a farm visit which I really hope we are able to do. Overall I really enjoyed the experience of the Round Table Meeting which was a very well organised meeting and also very good social in the evenings. The South Eastern Ram Show and Sale in 2016 will be again at Ashford Market on Friday 9th September. Please make a note in your diaries.

South West Club This past year has been one of highs and lows.

The undoubted high was the summer outing and the low was the sad passing of Robert Watts.
I
am pleased to say that Robert was awarded the President’s Prize for 30 years of promoting Texels in the South West.
The undoubted high was the summer outing to Martin and David Pipe’s racing yard, where the many members who attended had to be on the gallops by 8.30 a.m. This was followed by a tour of the yard, including the horse swimming pool. Many of the stables had trees painted on the walls to calm the horses. Next was a visit to the Pipe laboratory where the blood is tested weekly of every horse. This was followed by the mechanised horse, the walls of this room decorated by photos of the many celebrities practising their horse riding. Many thanks must go to Sue Summerhayes and family for organising the day. Laying on a superb lunch and raising £270 for the Injured Jockeys Fund. At the Devon Show the Chave family had the champion Texel with a two year old ram, which went on to be interbreed champion. They also had the interbreed pairs champion, so many congratulations to them. At the Cornwall Show the Quick family had champion with their shearling ewe. This year’s South West NSA event was held at Nicholls Nymet by kind permission of the Quick family. Our Club in conjunction with the Texel Society, had a very successful stand manned by members who were kept busy all day long by the many visitors. Sheep for the stand were kindly supplied by Phil Martyn, Uglow, to whom we are grateful.
At Exeter NSA Sale in August, the Chave family had the champion Texel, with a shearling ram. Top price also went to the Chave family, a shearling ram selling for £924. In total 101 Texel rams were sold (same as 2014) and the average was back £72 on the year. At the main NSA Builth sale, Drapers averaged 793gns, Quicks 760gns and Chaves a little less. At Carlisle Quicks sold at 2600gns, 2200gns and averaged 1720gns. They sold at Kelso for the first time this year, had a top price of 4000gns and averaged 1760gns for the pen. New rams that have come into members in this area are Canllefaes Vantastic at 6800gns to the Quick family, with a half share to the Hartwights, Clarkes Wizard to the Chave family at 2200gns and Kaker Mill Warrior at 5000gns to the Chave family. Following the unrivalled success of the summer outing the committee is deep in thought as to the venue of next year’s summer outing. I would like to thank our secretary, Michelle Moore for all her hard work in organising the various events and to Ruth Cooke for managing the finances and for the support and input of all the committee members during the past year.

Our annual show and sale at Wilton in September was well supported with regular and new buyers present. It was good to have David Martyn as judge – his father did the task several years earlier. The females had a particularly good trade with the 1st prize shearling from Drayton Farm Partnership commanding top price of the day at 605 gns. Adrian Dufosee’s ram
David Martyn, judge, with Helyer’s Champion ram handled by David Farmer
lamb won the ram lamb class and Waid and Georgie Helyer’s shearling won its class. The Helyer’s also won the Jean Harford Plate for best pen. By the end of September there was hardly a Texel ram to be found in our area. They had all been sold. A frequent comment was – “we used to use Texels, tried lots of others, but please we want to go back to Texels.” Adrian, as flock winner last year, judged the Durnford’s Vashtie flock as the winners of the flock competition. South Sheep 2016 is in our area next year and we hope to see many of our customers and friends on our stand. Our Sale – 8th September 2016 at Wilton

t shows there has been a cloud on the horizon. An increasing number of show societies in our area are “grumbling” about sheep that have been colour sprayed/dipped. At one show sheep had to be washed. The big complaint is that sheep are being presented to give a so called false impression. When challenged about trimming, which can alter the shape, we were frequently told that that was different. Have others in different areas had problems?
