The value of British Texel The British Texel Sheep Society has grown into the largest registry of Pedigree Texel sheep anywhere in the world. At an industry level the financial benefits of genetic improvement by using Texel are significant. Indeed this is forecast to grow further attributed to both an increased market share (despite total UK sheep numbers falling) and accelerating rates of genetic progress in economically important traits through the use of pedigree performance recorded rams. At a pedigree level sale averages have consistently risen over the last three years across the country, proving the demand for Texels from commercial farmers and delivering increased revenues for Texel breeders. “In any industry there is innovation and also developments that irrevocably alter the entire landscape of an industry. The introduction and evolution of the Texel breed is one such development and it has been proven to have transformed standards across the entire sheep meat supply chain, forever.” “Texel genes are now integrated across many breed lines in the UK. Texel has become more than a game changer, the breed’s capabilities to increase yield and quality from diverse production systems is unmatched, improving both production consistency and delivering increased values.”

work of the board, the breed development committee has been extremely busy, with the Society leading several large research projects. Genomic technology is going to be part of the future and, although very successful in dairy cattle, it is going to be more challenging for sheep I believe.
ast year at this time, I commented that we had just come through one of the wettest winters for a while. This year I am delighted to say that we have had one of the driest winters for years, with 11 inches less rain over the last four months. It is a pleasure to be getting on with spring work in good conditions.
L
The Brexit vote took place on the first day of the Royal Highland Show last June and perhaps it did not bring the result that many of us in the farming world were hoping for. As far as prices were concerned, it did not have much negative impact until the winter. Hogget prices were back on average 20p/kg. However, Texel hoggs are still topping many markets
www.texel.co.uk
Over last summer there was a buzz in the air at all the Texel events I attended, with tremendous champions at our Royal Shows which were a great representation of the breed. The sale season got underway in August and September with records broken at many of them. Our Scottish National grossed £1,081,668 for the sale and saw a record ram lamb average of £2812.24 and the English National Sale at Worcester saw a centre record set at £16,000gns for a gimmer. At board level we continue to keep the momentum going to ensure Texels are the UK’s number one breed. In addition to the

On the financial front the Society remains in good shape with a steady growth of income and with investments. This is giving us the funds to continue to promote and develop the breed. Exports remain strong and last November I attended a weekend in Switzerland in November. This turned out to be a MultiNational Show with Texels from Britain, France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland taking part. The Swiss were looking for good commercial sheep with growth and carcass. The British Texel seemed to be the preferred type, so hopefully there will be more exports in the future. Looking forward I wish the YDP committee and all young members the very best of luck with the Five Nations Event which is being staged in June in the North of England, and in November the 2017 AGM and Social Weekend will be held at Oulton Hall, Leeds, preparations are well underway. A weekend not to be missed. I would like to welcome Steve Martin and Elliott Bell as members of the board and hope they enjoy their term. I am sure they will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience with them. And, finally I would like to thank the board, John and all the staff in the office for their support during my term as chairman. Also, thanks to my wife Jean and the boys for giving me the time to carry out my role.

ith the future looking possibly less certain than at any time in the 45 years since Texels first arrived in this country. One thing which is certain is that sheep farmers will once again adapt and evolve to suit the market and the economic climate they find themselves in.
W
We can take heart that the Breed is ever more popular, with pedigree and performance driving genetic improvement to the benefit of commercial producers. With a 10% rise in membership over the previous eight years and female registrations rising 11%, to just over 21,000 since 2013, both important key performance indicators, providing us with the assurance that pedigree Texel is valued in the industry. In any industry there is innovation and also developments that irrevocably alter the entire landscape of that industry. The introduction and evolution of the Texel breed is one such development and it has been proven to have transformed standards across the entire sheep meat supply chain, forever. Texel genes are now integrated across many breed lines in the UK. Texel has become more than a game changer, the breed’s capabilities to increase yield and
We have asked ourselves “how do we build a diverse and creative team that can reach better decisions?” We are investing in skilled and knowledgeable staff and whilst we know disruption is inevitable. The challenge is to ensure the organisation can embrace the looming change and continue to offer the highest standard of service that the membership has come to expect over the last 4 plus decades. By investing in the latest technologies and developing phenotype collection methods of hard to measure traits, is enabling the Society to drive the UK sheep industry from the front. Over the coming years Texel breeders will have the ability to use modern and more reliable breeding values for disease resilience, carcass quality and meat eating quality. I have no doubt that you will continue to witness the Texel Society leading innovation, collaborating with like minded organisations and future proofing its services. All of which help to provide valued services and support our members, as they make difficult breeding decisions, to match performance with type and meet commercial needs.

The Society Board recognises the need to manage change and develop systems and services. No business has the luxury to play out change over time, particularly in the midst of disruption. Institutional inertia is often underestimated and more evident in large organisations. An extract of the Society’s Breed Development Plan, published in the November Bulletin, sets out clear goals to support genetic improvement.

UK/US Ovine Genetics Trade Back on Track Export
here is a positive outlook for exports of UK ovine genetics to the USA in 2017.The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and DEFRA agreed health protocols to allow the resumption of UK semen exports in spring 2016.
T
However, unfortunately issues arose in late 2016 that prevented USA breeders from obtaining USDA import certificates. A USDA compliance amendment now requires 120-day ram quarantine before entrance to collection centres. UK breeders providing rams had believed the requirement was for a 60-day quarantine pre-collection. Farmgene and AB Europe, the sole UK genetics companies licensed to offer semen collection to the USA, have recently announced new opportunities for 2017. UK quarantine may now take place indoors on-farm in an approved building. When the quarantine takes place outdoors, standard livestock fencing with a 10-meter buffer zone from any other livestock is mandated. If a 10-meter buffer is not available, a five-meter gap with 2 x 1.8 meter fence is required (see below).
www.texel.co.uk 16
Full quarantine rules can be found in the export protocol availabe on the UKECP website - http://ukecp.com/media/ com_form2content/documents/c4/a385/ f30/7852NFGI.pdf In 2016 uncertainty about interpretation of these new 120-day quarantine regulations caused significant push back from sheep breeders on both sides of the Atlantic. Worry over logistics and associated financial implications led to cancellation of ram hire agreements.
To overcome these issues Kulin Patel, senior government vet adviser with Animal Plant Health Authority (APHA) worked tirelessly with his USA counterparts at USDA to successfully resolve all issues. Additionally, the Agricultural Horticultural Development Board (AHDB) must be recognised for it’s commendable efforts. They promoted importations of UK ovine genetics to the USA once the 2010 semen ban was lifted in early 2016. The UK sheep industry will benefit from this proactive approach; seeds have been sown for future trade. AHDB hired this article’s author John Wilkes to market and promote UK genetics as part of its USA initiative. It is hoped that the trans-Atlantic trade may soon encompass the export of UK embryos and live pedigree sheep to the USA. Details of the proposed changes to the current UK embryo embargo can be found in the USDA legislation,Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE) update. This is the same legislation that would allow access for UK lamb to the USA. https://www.regulations.gov/ document?D=APHIS-2009-0095-0001 This legislation awaits confirmation pending a USDA review to responses from the statutory 60-day open consultation period that ended in September 2016. Patrea Pabst’s Beaver Creek Texel flock
Many USA responders cited the need for UK genetics for the betterment of the American sheep industry. Some within the sheep industry believe American breed types are too large. A mature USA Suffolk ram can reach 160kg liveweight. This leads to an average USA lamb carcass weight of 30.5kg. Some rangeland lambs may yield a 40kg carcass into March/April. USA Texel breeding sheep closely align with UK standards for size and weight.Texel sheep producers Robert Laird and Ian Murray tried to facilitate export of Texel semen to the USA in 2016. Unfortunately, confusion about regulations stymied progress. With USDA agreed processes now in place, both currently have rams in quarantine to have semen collected for USA Texel breeder, Patrea Pabst for her Beaver Creek flock. “We are very enthusiastic to be involved in a third export of Texel semen to the USA – it is more than 20 years since our first shipment,” commented Robert Laird. In June 2016, Patrea Pabst visited Robert Laird’s Cambwell flock and Ian Murray’s Glenway flock. Previously, Pabst used a son of Cambwell Laird in her Dewey Rose, Georgia, flock with much success. With UK semen import banned in 2010, Pabst used New Zealand Texel genetics. Robert Laird remarked: “Patrea felt the type of sheep she saw in the UK would
Export
John on a recent visit to the 80,000 head Double J lamb feedlot near Denver, Colarado
complement her own flock and move the USA flock forward. There has been a dearth of new bloodlines that could improve the conformation and killing out percentages of USA Texels.” Mr Laird added: “Going forward the longawaited opening of the door to export of embryos, live pedigree sheep and butchers lambs will hopefully see the market for quality British Texel sheep increase.” Improved terminal sire performance from modern UK type breeding sheep can benefit sections of the USA lamb industry. Of equal importance is replenishment of gene pools for traditional breeds of UK origin in the USA to ensure genetic diversity. Throughout the regulatory problems USA and UK sheep breeders have shown a spirit of goodwill and cooperation. Future agricultural trade negotiations between the USA and UK could greatly benefit from a similar approach. John Wilkes is a former UK livestock producer. He currently resides in Washington, DC John consults and writes about international agriculture and trade. His experience and knowledge of UK and USA agriculture gives him unique perspective to advise and comment.

YDP - Annual report YDP - Annual report NSA Sheep event - Malvern
The Texel Youth Development Programme enjoyed a good year in 2016, extending its activities and putting in place plans for the 2017, including the third running of the Texel Five Nations Event.
www.texel.co.uk 30
During 2016 YDP members were on hand at the Sheep Event Malvern to help with the Society’s stand, being instrumental in the success of the Society’s stock judging competition, resulting in more than 500 entries being collected on the day from event visitors. Additionally, the YDP organised and sponsored a number of young handler’s classes, including at the Royal Welsh Show. Across in Northern Ireland the Texel Young Breeders Club has held its annual Go Karting evening and the young members ram lamb class at the Northern Irish National Sale.
In 2017 the YDP is looking forward to the Five Nations Event in early June, which will take in visits to the Procters and Sportsmans flocks as well as providing a social and competitive weekend for young breeders under 35 from across the UK and Ireland. And in addition to this the YDP is hoping to organise Texel sired prime lamb competitions for Young Farmers Club members in livestock markets across the country. YDP Chairman Adrian Liggett said the group has been busy working behind the scenes to develop a number of initiatives and activities to benefit young Texel breeders and he hoped the 2017 Five Nations Event would provide a launch platform for further regional events and gatherings in the years to come.

nyone wanting proof that hard work and determination can get you to the top of the Texel breed need look no further than the Bennett family’s Plaucha flock, which despite being established little more than a decade ago has proved itself a force to be reckoned with in recent years.
A
www.texel.co.uk 40
Now under the management of Robert Bennett, the flock forms part of a diverse farming business which includes a 120-cow dairy herd, 64,000 laying hens and 600 Lleyn ewes at Upper Hall, Meiford. Farming with his father, Alan, mother, Helen, and brother, Hywel, Robert says the aim of the Texel flock from the outset has been to breed top end pedigree sheep which can attract premium prices. “Of course the commercial customer is in the mix too, but my focus is clearly on the breeders sheep and particularly producing quality females.
“Ultimately I firmly believe that if we have the females right then the tups will follow, but without a solid female base we simply won’t breed tups.” The early years of the flock saw a ewe bought from Bruce Renwick’s Castlecairn flock in 2004 and no females then purchased until 2007 when a number were bought from the Raglan flock dispersal. “That first Castlecairn ewe was a Craighead Hercules daughter and did us well. Meanwhile, the Raglan ewes were far from the dearest, but have done us well, breeding quality sheep which have done well at both shows and sales, including one being the dam of the 3000gns Plasucha Tiger which was champion at the main NSA sale at Builth Wells in 2012 and another being dam of the champion gimmer at the Shropshire and Borders Club sale in 2011 which sold for 2000gns.
“One of the best breeding ewes from that group was a ewe lamb we bought for 190gns, she has bred daughters to 1700gns and granddaughters have sold to 3500gns. These were really good solid foundation ewes.” Further additions were made from the Pen Parc flock of Steve and Helen Smith, with these bought as older, proven ewes over a period of about three years. Additionally, an in-lamb Pen Parc gimmer was bought at the Twilight sale, with the resulting lamb being Plasucha Riri. This Skiddaw Magic daughter was the third prize gimmer at the Royal Welsh in 2011 and went on to be the reserve female champion at the same show in 2013, as well as standing third at the Royal Highland in the same year. “We’ve kept plenty of females off that line over the years and they always breed well, working with a wide range of tups.” Robert says the flock now totals about 25 ewes with every ewe in the flock flushed
each year to maximise the number of top quality progeny available each year. “The aim is to fast track the genetics in the flock as quickly as possible and that means identifying females from the best breeding families and then giving ourselves the opportunity to sell a significant number of females each year. With only 25 ewes in the flock we only retain five or six gimmers a year, giving us the potential to sell 60-65 gimmers a year,” he explains. Recent years have seen the flock’s females thrive in the sales ring, with a gimmer by Garngour Upperclass topping the Twilight Texels in-lamb sale in 2015 at 10,000gns and another by homebred sire Plasucha Vavavoom taking the female and reserve overall champion at the Scottish National Sale, Lanark, in 2016 and selling for 6500gns.

Tup choices for the flock have largely been driven by buying rams from proven female lines and aiming for correctness, carcass and growth, says Robert. “The first tup we

used was one we bought privately, Pen Parc Nobleman. He was bought as an older tup having seen his progeny and his dam. He did a great job and really put us on the map for producing quality females, including one we sold for 2000gns. He bred good tups too, with length, carcass and great skins. “The next main investment in a tup came when we bought Kingledores Scaramouche at Lanark. He was again bought off the back of his female line, being out of a Garngour ewe. We’d been to Garngour on a club trip and I was impressed with their type of ewe. Added to that he was by Glenside Ringading, so came with strong bloodlines on both sides. He was a strong, powerful, correct lamb with length and a good head too. He did a great job and was another really good female breeder too.” Robert also used semen from Connachan Sharky on three ewes that year with the permission of Daniel Jones of the Aldan flock who had bought him. “I’d liked Sharky at the sale and had looked at him as a possible purchase, but Daniel went for him and let us use him on a few ewes. He was sire of Plasucha Tiger and Daniel kindly sold us a share in Sharky the next year and we used him more widely.
BFE1505078 - Scottish National Sale Lanark Champion Female and Reserve Overall Champion 2016
“We also bought a full ET sister to Sharky in the form of Connachan Spice Babe for 4000gns at the Christmas Stars sale. Another full sister to Sharky was Connachan Sugarbabe which went on to be the dam of Vicious Sid.” Both Scaramouche and Sharky took the flock up a level, explains Robert, with Scaramouche being the sire of the second and third placed ewe lambs at the Royal Welsh in 2012. Further female additions followed with a pair of ewe lambs bought from the Scholars flock of Will and Liz McCaffrey, with these also proving to be a wise investment, again breeding quality females. “However, it was clear we needed to find a tup to breed tups, rather than another female breeder. As a result we bought Fairywater Valiant, he was bought for his power, skin, topline and lift. He had a great carcass and looked to be a real tup breeder, while also coming from a strong female line.” Further tup additions have included Garngour Upperclass, a shared purchase
And, while selling breeders type lambs is the aim for the flock, the family are also mindful of the commercial market, keeping about half of their tup lambs back to make shearlings of, with these sold largely at Welshpool. “It is generally the younger lambs and the longer sorts we make shearlings of, they grow on well through the winter and it is important to keep the length and size in the flock to produce these shearlings. “ Lambing in late February the flock is generally housed in two stages, with ewes
carrying twins housed about six weeks ahead of lambing and singles housed three weeks later. “We try to get ewes and lambs out to grass as soon as we can, preferably within a few days as it is far better for them to be out at grass and the ewes milk better off grass than anything else,” he says. Looking to the future Robert says the aim is to continue selling a good number of females each year, with a mix between both empty and in-lamb gimmers. “That said we may well increase ewe numbers a bit too, maybe up to 35 with the aim of having about 200 birth notifications each year, allowing greater selection pressure to be applied and maintain a reputation for quality wherever we sell.” Adding to the selection mix is the use of performance recording, with Robert using this as a decision making tool rather than a sole focus. “It’s a good tool to have in the decision making selection, but what we all have to remember is that it is an estimated breeding value, so can never be used as the sold decision maker. It is an estimate of that animal’s potential, so is only part of the picture,” he adds.

with the Cressage and Scholars flock, with a son retained for use and another three sold, including Plasucha Will.I.Am sold for 3200gns and William sold at 2800gns in the first season. The following year Kelso Wiseman was bought privately from Malcolm Reid having been seen in June and the again in August. “He was a stand out tup in June and again later in the season, with great colours and length, his dam is a full sister to Kelso Pavarotti.”

Paul & Baillie O’Connor - Drumgooland Paul and Tina with Taff the dog, Son Baillie and Daughters Molly & Sorcha
Paul & Baillie O’Connor - Drumgooland espite being relatively recent converts to pedigree breeding the O’Connor family, Paul and son Baillie, have enjoyed exceptional success over the last five years since they started breeding pedigree Texels at Seaforde, Co Down.
D
www.texel.co.uk 44
Having previously had commercial sheep the O’Connor’s bought their first pedigree Texels in 2010, with their first lambs being born in 2011. “We’d run commercial sheep for a number of years and begun to think perhaps, bearing in mind we were only running a relatively small number, that we’d have more chance of making some money out of them if we were running pedigrees,” explains Paul.
“Texels were the obvious choice as they are an easily sold breed. There is great demand for commercial tups and good quality pedigree females.” Foundation ewes for the flock came from a number of flocks, both in Northern Ireland and the UK mainland, with ewes purchased from noted flocks including Sportsmans, Forkins, Tamnamoney, Strathbogie and Milnbank, with some bought privately and others sourced through auctions. “We were conscious of following the best family lines we could buy into from these flocks and looked for well bred ewes with size and scope which displayed breed
But perhaps the most prominent purchase for the flock came in 2013 when they bought Oberstown Usain Bolt from Eire breeders Pat and Barry Farrell at the Irish Texel Society’s Blessington sale. “He has without a doubt really helped put us on the map and raised our profile significantly. In his first season sons sold to a high of 52,000gns for Mullan Vivaldi from Brian Hanthorn, with him winning the 2014 Texel Sheep Society Sire of the Year award.
The flock has won the ram lamb class twice in three years at Balmoral, winning with a Breahead Real MCCoy son, Drumgooland Urban Warrior, in 2013 and following that up when winning with a Killyvolgan Veejay son in 2015 and winning the ewe lamb class in the same year with a Teiglum Vigilante daughter. “For us showing has really helped us get a gauge on how well our own sheep are doing and allowed us to showcase what we’re breeding to other breeders, both here in Northern Ireland and further afield. “We’ve been lucky to have bought some great foundation bloodlines and had advice and help along the way from a number of other breeders and this social aspect is another important part of pedigree breeding which we greatly enjoy.”
Paul & Baillie O’Connor - Drumgooland
And when it comes to buying tups a similar philosophy applies, with the family seeking out the best tups to suit their flock and always looking for sires with something they feel their flock requires. “It is always about improving our stock and that means looking for corrective matings in the tups we use. Knock Travis was bought in partnership with other Northern Irish breeders in the flock’s third year and is one that’s really helped move us forward. He left a great crop of both males and females, with his daughters performing well throughout the flock.”
“Since then we’ve shown Bolt twice at Balmoral, with him winning his class on both occasions and being male champion in 2015. Without a doubt showing is a central part of our marketing and as relatively new breeders it has helped us get noticed quickly.”

character. I always believed we could breed the extras on these ewes with the right tups, but we need a canvas to start from. Correctness, skin and structure were essential in these foundation ewes.”

But like everyone it is sales where the reward is earned. “At our first ever National Sale, the 2012 Northern Irish Premier Sale, Ballymena, we sold to a top of 4500gns for Drumgooland Tattoo. He was a Baltier Rascal son out of a Kelso Pavarotti dam and was sold to a syndicate of breeders made up of Henry Gamble, Andrew Kennedy and Martin Cromie. To have a lamb sell to that price in only our second year and to see him go to noted flocks was a real boost for us.”
flock took the top price, repeating its success of 2015 at the same event, with the Drumgooland consignment at the Northern Stars invitational sale of females selling to a top of 3500gns for OCP1500465, a Duncryne Uber Cool daughter and out of a Strathbogie dam bought privately. She was third at Balmoral Show as a gimmer and sold in-lamb to Halbeath Woody, being the pick of H J Wilson, Raphoe. The entire Drumgooland entry at the Northern Stars leveled the day at 1100gns.
And at the 2016 Northern Irish National Sale the flock had the first prize shearling ram and reserve male champion with Drumgooland Winterfell, a Usain Bolt son. He went on to sell to the Cowal flock of Keith, Roy and Alan Campbell for 1500gns. The same sale saw the family top the female trade when selling their second prize gimmer, OCP1500430, a daughter of Killyvolgan Veejay out of a dam by Millcomb Ronaldo. This one had stood first at Castlewellan as a lamb and was well fought for before finally selling to Ryan Brolly, Greysteel, Eglinton.
Sires for the 2017 lamb crop include new purchases Douganhill Young Gun at 12,000gns, with this lamb having been champion at the Solway and Tyne Club’s sale in September. Additionally, the father and son team bought Staintin Yasin, the fourth prize open lamb from the English National Sale, Worcester.
Meanwhile, at the Northern Irish Texel Club’s in-lamb sale later in the year the

With the flock now suitably established the aim is to exploit the best genetics in the flock to best effect through judicious use of embryo transfer. “We’ve been able to see quite quickly what’s working for us and what’s not and by using ET we’re able to quickly escalate the progress within the flock,” adds Paul.

with a large market and a lot going on too. Over the last seven years or so I’ve tried to develop the flock from those early foundations and produce the type of ram we can sell locally. Powerful, well fleshed shearling tups with good tops and skins and a decent backend too.”
Having established the flock in 2010 with five ewe lambs from the Ashley family’s Lincs flock, numbers currently stand at 60 ewes, with expansion largely having been home-grown with the exception of 10 females purchased from Simon Rogers’ Decoy flock prior to its relocation to Cornwall.
Tessa’s initial 15 ewes were joined by Haltcliffe Rhapsody and Matthews Rocket Man both from the Ridley family’s flocks at Hesket Newmarket, Cumbria, and both sourced from the Solway and Tyne Club sale at Carlisle. “Both those rams did a good job initially, leaving good bodies and naturally fleshing progeny. The aim has always been to produce carcass sheep and while a good head is nice to have I’m really not that bothered about flashy heads. I’d far sooner have correct, good bodied sheep,” she explains.

The flock now numbers 60 ewes, having been bred up from initial purchases from the Lincs and Decoy flocks.

“If I’m honest showing was part of the reason for starting with Texels and it’s something I enjoy a lot. Importantly though it is a great way to meet like minded breeders and also to get the flock seen by potential customers. Showcasing the quality of stock we have for sale is important and ensures we can continue to build the customer base.” Rams are currently sold from home and at the NSA Eastern Region sale at Melton Mowbray as well as offering a small number at the Solway and Tyne Club’s first sale at Carlisle in September. “Last year I sold 20
50
shearling tups in all, with the pen at Melton Mowbray topping at 950gns and averaging more than £700. The demand for strong Texel shearlings is good locally and I’m keen to concentrate on that. I have sold a few ram lambs in the past, particularly when I feel we have too many to run to shearlings, but I’d sooner sell shearlings as that’s what most customers tend to want.” Lambing in mid February the flock is housed about 10 days ahead of lambing, while both ewe and ram hoggs remain out all winter, initially on grass keep on a local dairy farm and latterly on stubble turnips. “Most of the ewe hoggs will never see concentrate once they come off the creep feed as lambs. The only ones that will are the few I select as potential show sheep. Likewise, the shearling rams aren’t fed until about six to eight weeks before the sales, growing at grass for most of the spring and summer. Hopefully not having been fed large amounts of concentrate means they will perform better in commercial situations and mean they last longer which is beneficial for
After lambing ewes go out to grass again within about 10 days and creep is introduced to lambs at about four weeks old. “They don’t get a huge amount, just enough to let them express their potential and to bring on any possible show lambs.” Looking ahead Tessa says the aim for the flock is to continue to develop the trade for
“With the flock now at a number I feel is right there is an opportunity to start selling a few shearlings each year and again there should be a good demand for the right sort of ewe. I have sold a few at the Solway and Tyne Club sale in the past and would like to build on this in future years. It’s likely we’ll have a few to sell in 2017, with the flock relatively young and not wishing to expand much further at the moment,” explains Tessa. “I am also keen to get out on to the wider show circuit and possibly show at some of the bigger shows, such as the Great Yorkshire. But the competition at shows like this is strong and I’m not sure I’m ready to be at that level yet. Primarily though I want to keep producing the type of tup we are at the moment and build the number we sell each year to maximise income from the flock,” she adds.
Tessa Bustance - Eaubrink
Feeding is equally sparing for the ewes, with a small amount of concentrate introduced in the 10 days before ewes are housed and continued for a few weeks after lambing until grass growth pushes on. Recent years have seen the addition of sires from the Cairnam, Far Hey and Thacka flocks, with these again purchased for their size, length and carcass characteristics. “The Cairnam and Far Hey tups were the main service sires for the 2016 tupping season. The Thacka ram was bought at the Solway and Tyne Club first sale in 2016 and was used to sweep up after the first cycle had been covered by the other two rams. He has a tremendous carcass with a great top too and is exceptionally correct.”

our customers,” says Tessa who runs the flock with the help of her boyfriend Tom Skinner.
Ewes and lambs go back out to grass soon after lambing, with a little creep offered from four weeks old.

important the Texel breed continues to produce rams which carry natural cover at that weight and indeed lighter and heavier weights.
Peter says with the flock selling all tups as ram lambs the ability of animals to carry flesh and cover at every stage of their life is critical to their saleability.
“The flexibility offered by prime lambs that can be marketed at a variety of weights should not be underestimated. When the trade fluctuates having the ability to sell lambs at lighter weights can be a significant advantage for commercial producers and that requires us to produce rams which flesh naturally and have a desirable level of cover at all stages of their growth,” explains Peter.
N
www.texel.co.uk
“I’ve always focussed on getting them away as lambs as I believe that’s the best way to maximise the cash flow and return on our investment. Additionally, our commercial buyers are selling prime lambs, so it makes sense for them to buy their future sires as lambs to see how their progeny will look.” “Shearlings are wanted in many parts of the country, but our customers prefer buying lambs, so that’s what we have to focus on producing.” He says the focus for the commercial producer is the 42kg prime lamb and it is
52
For the Woofs their journey with Texels began in the late 1980s with the purchase of a number of ewe lambs both privately and from sales. “That was in 1989, with additional gimmers bought to put alongside them in 1990. We lambed all those sheep in the first year and then identified which ones were breeding the type of sheep we wanted and culled about half of the ewes in
Peter Woof - Stainton Texels “Today we sell about 75 tup lambs a year, with a lot sold locally and the pick sold at the Society National sales as well as the Northern Area Sale at Skipton and the Solway and Tyne sales at Carlisle,” he adds. With the flock numbers cut back in recent years to concentrate on the better bloodlines, embryo transfer is a key management tool for the flock and about 15 ewes are flushed each year. “There can be some criticism of flushing, but I honestly believe the breed wouldn’t be where it is today without it.” Peter says he’s been fortunate to enjoy success with flushing, but says a lot of that comes back to a better understanding of the process and how to manage sheep for the best results. “We average about 10 embryos/
ewe and an 85% hold rate, which is about as good as it gets really. The results speak for themselves and many of our best lambs in recent years are the result of flushing ewes we know will breed the goods.” A case in point of this is the ewe WPS1300500 which stood second as a ewe lamb at the Great Yorkshire Show and has subsequently gone on to breed noted rams such as Stainton Vigilante and Stainton Vantage II, with no fewer than 11 rams sold to pedigree flocks in three years. And while many breeders may feel the urge to add a new female bloodline every so often Peter is keen to maximise the quality of homebred bloodlines. “We don’t buy females at all and haven’t done since those early years. I prefer to breed from our own females, knowing that they have been bred here and perform well in our system
Tel: 02476 696629 office@texel.co.uk
that first year. We went on from there really, just breeding a type that suited us and that we could sell.
“Equally, it is hard enough buying the tup you want without adding in the hassle of trying to buy females too!”
53
Peter Woof - Stainton Texels
Every ewe in the flock is AI’d, with flushing and main service taking place at the same time in order to achieve a compact lambing. “With tups often shared with other breeders AI is really the only way of ensuring we can maximise the benefit of the bloodlines we want to use.
“Tup lambs get moved at least once a week to keep a fresh bite in front of them, going by the old maxim of sheep never hearing the church bells in the same field twice in a week,” he explains.
“We aim to start lambing in mid February and having everything lambing together can make it busy, but equally it means we’re focussed on lambing and nothing else. Ewes come in about two weeks before lambing to allow them to settle, with them then staying in for up to six weeks after lambing to allow grass to get going before we turn ewes and lambs out again.
It is a strategy paying dividends in the show ring too, with the flock regularly featuring in the top tickets at the Great Yorkshire Show, including taking the reserve male championship at the show in 2016 with the second prize ram lamb and also winning the performance recorded ram lamb class too. “I like to breed a good balanced type, they need that bit of show ring sparkle alongside the key commercial traits,” adds Peter.
“Creep is introduced before lambs are turned out to grass and where possible we turn ewes with ewe lambs out separately to those with tup lambs as we don’t creep feed our ewe lambs.” Once weaned the aim is to paddock graze the tup lambs to maximise growth from grass, with tup lambs batched according to their quality and likely sale destination.
When it comes to buying tups Peter admits he’s maybe changed his priorities in recent years, with the results showing in the rams he’s sold. “Historically we could have been seen as a female breeding flock and with a number of national sale female and overall championships with gimmers it was justifiably so. “But in the last few years we’ve bred some better tups too and that has come from
www.texel.co.uk 54
using tups with a bit more character than we might have done before and looking for tops and shoulders too. “For this season we bought a share in Knock Yankee at Carlisle, he’s a ram with a great top and shoulder. Those are priorities when we’re selling ram lambs as if they have poor tops and shoulders they won’t leave good prime lambs.”
“Texel cross lambs can be sold at a variety of weights, finish easily and quickly and equally Texel cross females are growing in popularity too. Using a Texel ram gives commercial producers choices when it comes to marketing their lambs.”
Peter Woof - Stainton Texels
Stainton Vigilante sold for 11,000gns
Looking forward Peter believes the breed is in good heart to face the challenges posed by likely changes in the industry in the coming years. “Provided we focus on breeding carcasses and natural fleshing the breed has nothing to fear. No other breed offers the versatility that Texels do and that is a major strength of the breed going forward.
Tel: 02476 696629 office@texel.co.uk
Historic tup highlights include Annan Goldsmith and Cambwell Mountain, with Sportsmans Tremendous II, Anglezarke Uno and Hexel Wildcard being stars of recent years. “All three of these have bred well on a variety of ewes, always clicking and leaving progeny with carcass and structure. Wildcard delivered an excellent crop in his first season, with our tup lamb average being the highest it ever has been and prices peaking at 7000gns.”

Show Judges 2017 Royal Ulster Show 10th - 13th May PHILLIP KERMODE - ORRISDALE
Show Judges
Philip has been involved in pedigree Texels for twenty three years. Having run Texel rams on his commercial flock previously he made the decision to breed his own rams and, as the saying goes, like Topsy the flock grew. The Orrisdale Flock is a family enterprise with his wife Carol and children Kirree, Thomas and Caesar all involved. They run approximately 300 pedigree ewes with an emphasis on breed type, mobility and, most importantly, carcass and length. Alongside the Texels there are small flocks of Charollais and Suffolks and a commercial flock. Orrisdale is also home to herds of Limousin, Aberdeen Angus and Charolais cattle and a commercial suckler herd. Over the years Philip has enjoyed success at the Royal Highland and the Great Yorkshire concentrating on the ewe lamb and recorded ram lamb classes, achieving Reserve Female Champion at the GYS 2012, 1st Prize Ewe Lamb RHS 2014 and Reserve Male Champion GYS 2014. Philip has judged the Great Yorkshire Show, Northern Ireland Flock Competition and the Irish Premier Show and Sale at Blessington. He is pleased and honoured to have been selected for this role and is looking forward to it.
Royal Bath and West Show 31st May - 3rd June DAVID BRADLEY-FARMER - MEON DOWN Texels have been a part of David Bradley-Farmer’s life for as long as he remembers, through the family’s association with the breed.
www.texel.co.uk
Having founded his own flock in 2006 with an in-lamb ewe from Avril Evans, Raglan flock. David has since gone on to enjoy show and sale success, including winning second prize ewe lamb at the Royal Welsh with one of the lambs bought in the belly of that original ewe. A major highlight for David in the showring was winning the breed championship at the Royal Welsh in 2013 with Meon Down Spartacus, with the same ram winning the male championship at the Great Yorkshire a few weeks earlier. David says it is a great privilege to be asked to judge the Royal Bath and West show as it is a show he always enjoys attending, winning the breed championship there for the last four years and clinching the interbreed championship in 2016. He is looking forward to seeing the usual high standard of sheep forward at one of the season’s early shows.

The first Texel ewes arrived in Llangwm Christmas 1990 as a gift from Father Christmas when Iolo was only 10 years of age! From then on it has been his way of life. Along with wife Gwennan and children Hari and Begw, they run a flock of 120 pedigree ewes alongside 500 commercial ewes while Iolo also operates his own pregnancy scanning business. The farm is set on the North Wales hills with ground over 1,000 ft above sea level. Given the challenging weather conditions the flock focuses on commercially sound sheep paying particular attention to skin and carcass aiming for both the pedigree and the commercial markets. The flock sells at the three mainland premier sales annually together with consignments at the Carlisle and Ruthin club sales and the NSA at Builth, in addition in lamb gimmers head to the Twilight sale at Carlisle each year.

Royal Highland Show 22nd - 25th June IOLO P JONES - LLANGWM
After 20 years of select breeding, the first highlight for the flock came in 2010 when selling Llangwm Rocky for 32,000gns at Lanark and in 2015 after winning reserve male champion at the Royal Welsh Show, selling Llangwm Wario for £30,000 at the Scottish National. The flock has also won the Champion Flock Of Wales title in two consecutive years in 2014 and 2015.

Iolo feels privileged to be involved in the leading sheep breed in the UK and with the special people that are involved within the breed. “The shows and the sale season is the best time of year for me, when you get to see the best stock, the best people and the great socialising that is involved. It is an honour to judge this prestigious show and I can guarantee you that I will enjoy every minute of it”.

Great Yorkshire Show 11th - 13th July 2017 GORDON GRAY - ETTRICK
Show Judges
After winning the prestigious RHAS Stockman of the Year in 1981, where the training sessions allowed privileged access to many UK top herds and flocks, Gordon’s appetite was whetted to producing his own pedigree stock. Having seen imported Texels at Heathery Hall, he decided that they were the breed for him and these early purchases that started off as a hobby in 1982, formed the mainstay of the pedigree side of the farming business today, running 100 ewes, plus recipients. During 2009-2011 he served as Society Chairman and President having previously been the Scottish Club Chairman. Gordon has been honoured to have judged the RHS, RUS and last year the RWAS, and has also enjoyed judging the Scottish, Welsh and NI National Sales as well as Blessington and in 2013 was honoured to judge the French National Texel Show. Ettrick Texels have been a regular exhibitor at the Yorkshire for many years now and were thrilled to win the Interbreed pairs in 2014 after lifting the Female title and Res Champion Texel the previous day, this was followed with winning the Female Championship again in 2015. Previous success south of the Border has included winning the Royal Show in 2002 and 2003. Sales-wise, two of their top priced rams have themselves gone on to sire sale toppers namely the 36,000gns Ettrick Jackpot, who sired the 110,000gns Newhill Major and 16,000gns Ettrick Glenmorangie who sired the then record priced Craighead Hercules at 50,000gns. Gimmers have been sold up to 26,000gns in 2011. At Sunnycroft they also run a small herd of pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle, winning the Reserve Supreme Champion at the famous Perth Bull sales in 2009. Over the years Gordon says he has been given tremendous support by his wife Christine and twin daughters, Isla and Lisa and son David. Nowadays the running of the farm is shared with son, David, who also operates his own pregnancy scanning business. Gordon states that it’s a tremendous honour to have been asked to judge the Great Yorkshire Show, it has firmly established itself as the Premier Texel show in England, where the standard of sheep are only matched by the tremendous facilities, camaraderie and show organisation “ Well worth a visit!

Caron Texels was originally founded in 1988 by Gwilym’s father, T.G Williams. Gwilym went on to follow in his footsteps alongside his brother Geraint Williams and Texels became a big part in Gwilym’s life at their family farm in Ceredigion. Gwilym also works full time for a livestock dealer. His commitment to the breed is very high as he breeds for characteristics, conformation, skins, good legs and great top line. The Caron prefix has had consistent successes at the Royal Welsh Show and many other local shows around the County. Caron Texels have been fortunate to achieve three female Champions at the Royal Welsh Show, all being homebred ewes, they have also been awarded Reserve Male Champion with their tup Clougher Envy, achieved first prize with their homebred shearling tup Caron Famous and took first prize with shearling tup Knock Talisman at the Royal Welsh Show.

Winter Fair Round-up 2016
2016 Winter Fair Round Up
Texels proved to be top of the pops at a number of the major winter Primestock shows, with both the champion and reserve champions at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair and LiveScot being sired by Texel rams as well as the reserve champions at the English Winter Fair. At the Royal Welsh Winter Fair it was Almeley, Herefordshire-based Robin Slade who took the top ticket with his 76kg pair of Dutch Texel lambs which notched up Mr Slade’s third overall title at the event, having last won it in the early 1990s. He also took the reserve championship in the pairs section of the event’s carcass competition with similarly bred entries. Mr Slade’s overall champions sold at £600 each to David Jerman, Brilley. Taking the reserve supreme championship were another pair of Texels, this time from Hay-onWye husband and wife team Steve and Sara Gibbons. This pair, from last year’s supreme winners, later sold to Morgan Family Butchers for £430 each. Meanwhile, it was John Hall and family, Inglewood Edge, Carlisle, who took the top spot at LiveScot, Lanark, with their winning Texel-sired entries being the leaders from the heavyweight butchers’
lambs class, a pair which tipped the scales at 97kg. This April-born duo later sold to M J Stark, Milton of Campsie for £340 apiece. Standing reserve were the Whiteford family, Brampton, Carlisle, with a pair of Texel crosses which weighed in at 100kg. These also came through from the butchers’ lambs section and sold for £270 each to East Mains Farm, Newbigging And at the English Winter Fair, Stafford, Texels took the reserve overall championship in the live lamb section and also the reserve carcass championship. Lifting the reserve overall championship was Kate Gunn with her pair of pure Texels which had come through from the pure Texel class to be the champion purebred lambs of the show and then reserve supreme. The pair were by a tup bred by Matt Prince and out of ewes bred by David Wadland and weighed in at 47kg apiece. In the carcass section it was long-time supporter and regular winner Robin Slade who picked up the reserve supreme championship with his Dutch Texel sired carcass from his Weekfield flock.

Scottish National Show & Sale 2016 Judged by Bruce Renwick - Castlecairn ommercial and pedigree buyers were equally active at the 2016 Scottish National Texel Sale, Lanark, with a solid demand throughout the sale. The sale was a flying success with members and commercial buyers clearly focussed on investing on the best genetics available to move their flocks forward. The atmosphere around the ring was electric from start to finish, with a desire for well bred, tight skinned lambs capable of producing top drawer pedigree and commercial sheep demanded by the modern sheep industry. The breed’s exceptional fleshing and growth rates are unmatched and buyers demonstrated that, lifting the sale average by nearly £500 on the year to sit at £2812.24 for 351 ram lambs sold.

Ram Lambs Taking the pick of the trade at 70,000gns was Teiglum Younggun from Alan, Andrew and David Clark. This much admired son of the homebred Teiglum Windfall is an ET bred lamb flushed from the family’s show gimmer of this year. His dam, which was

interbreed champion at Great Yorkshire and breed champion at the Royal Highland, is by Castlecairn Vavavoom. The lamb had drawn plenty of pre-sale attention. Leading the bidding throughout was a partnership of North West breeders, with half shares taken by Procters Farm and Messrs Boden and Davies for their Procters and Sportsmans flocks, respectively.
Shearling Ewes A Yorkshire-bred gimmer who had stood third at the 2016 Great Yorkshire Show and stood reserve female champion in the presale show stole the limelight in the gimmer sale at Lanark when selling for 13,000gns. From the Mellin family’s Hull House flock, MJH1504937 led the trade on the evening. She is by Garngour Vodka and is out of a dam by Sportsmans Terrific II. This gimmer was subject to a good degree of pre-sale speculation with a number of leading breeders in the running for her, the eventual buyers being Hugh & Alan Blackwood, Auldhouseburn.

National Show & Sale Judges 2015
John Eirian Davies has been involved with pedigree Texel Sheep since 1986 when he and his father John Davies (Aman) purchased Talbot Popstar at the Welsh National Sale in Builth Wells. John Eirian is an auctioneer and chartered surveyor having graduated from The Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester in 1990. He has practiced in South Wales, Cumbria, Herefordshire and Mid Wales and since 1998 has been a Director of BJP operating livestock markets, estate agencies and providing a professional chartered surveying service. The Teilo flock of pedigree Texel sheep was established at Llwynyrynn, Capel Isaac, in 2003 with purchases from the Aman Flock. The flock numbers 30 breeding ewes of which five homebred ewes are flushed annually with the aim of producing ram lambs exhibiting breed character, but with an enhanced level of conformation and growth. Females are sold annually at the Dyfed Club Sale at Ffairfach with John Eirian in the rostrum. Ram lambs are consigned to the Lanark Sale. The Teilo flock has achieved success at Lanark with second prize MLC class awards for Teilo Nerthol in 2007,Teilo Pencampwr in 2009, while prices have been as high as 5000gns for Teilo Matholwch (5th Novice) in 2006 and Teilo Syfrdanol (4th MLC) in 2010.Two higher consideration sales have been achieved by the flock for Teilo Newydd and Teilo Ymerawdwr and in 2015 Teilo Welsh Dragon became the first Texel sheep to be exported from Wales to France, joining ‘Elevage’ Pery. John Eirian judged the Welsh Premier Sale in Welshpool in 2013 and in 2016 became the first Welshman to judge the Texel sheep classes at Paris Show. Married to Lynwen he has a son Cai, a student at Harper Adams, and daughter Miri in school and helping her parents on the farm.
Northern Ireland National Show & Sale NIGEL HAMILL - BALLYNADRENTA
www.texel.co.uk
Nigel has run the Ballynadrenta Flock with his brother Dennis for 35 years. They made their first purchase of two lambs at a Texel sale in Portadown in 1982, which became the foundation of the Ballynadrenta flock. Nigel says he hasn’t missed a year since in some capacity or other either selling or buying. Over the years Nigel has judged the Royal Dublin, All Ireland Show, The Royal Show, The Royal Welsh Show, the Royal Manx Show, the English National in 2014 and the Great Yorkshire Show in 2016, plus many other county shows. Nigel says it is indeed a great honour to be asked to judge the Northern Ireland Texel Sale in Ballymena in September. He has no doubt that the breeders will bring out good quality stock for both the pedigree market as well as the important commercial ones. He is looking forward to seeing everyone at this prestigious event.

English National Show & Sale DAVID CLARK - TEIGLUM - GARNGOUR - CLARKS
The best being 2016 when a gimmer won the Texel championship at the RHS and went onto win the sheep interbreed at the Great Yorkshire Show. To top the year off her son Teiglum Young Gun sold for 70,000gns and topped the Scottish National sale in August 2016. David enjoyed young farmer stock judging competitions and took part in the prestigious stockman of the year competition at the RHS where he was runner up twice; he has won the beef individual and the sheep pairs. He has also had great success in training young farmers for the Stockjudging competitions at the RHS. David was a keen sheep shearer and has sheared sheep in Norway and New Zealand; you can now hear him on the microphone at many shows around the country. He farms at Lee Meadow, Carluke, where he runs 300 cross ewes and 80 suckler cows. David says he is very much looking forward to judging the English National sale later this year.
Welsh National Show & Sale CHARLIE BODEN - SPORTSMANS/MELLOR VALE Texels have been a big part of Charlie’s life since he started the Sportsmans Flock with his Father back in 1974. They have had several successes on the show circuit, winning the Royal show, the Royal Welsh show and the Great Yorkshire show. One of his best achievements was taking the championship at Lanark in 1991 with Sportsmans Victor which sold for 12,000gns. The following year he won it again with Sportsmans Warlord which sold for 26,000gns. Charlie established a second flock in 1998, Mellor Vale Texels. Mellor Vale has had equally as much success on the show circuit and at the sales. The most famous being Mellor Vale Masterpiece and Mellor Vale Officer which have both sired numerous champions and continue to influence the breed today. In 2011 Sportmans averaged 6990gns for a pen of eight rams at Lanark, the top price ram, Sportsmans Supreme, selling for 20,000gns. Sportsmans Scania won reserve champion at Carlisle sale and went on to sell for 12,000gns.

Builth Wells - Performance Recorded Texel Flock best pen average 2016 Llion Jones - Pant Builth Wells - Llion Jones of the Pant flock
or North Wales breeder Llion Jones of the Pant flock 2016 will certainly be a year to remember, with the flock setting a new all breeds sale record at the main NSA Ram Sale, Builth Wells, at 18,000gns and also selling to 4000gns at the Ruthin Texel Club’s sale at Ruthin just a week earlier.
F
On top of that Llion’s 18,000gns record breaker, Pant Wolf, also helped the flock to clinch the Society’s PRT shield for the performance recorded flock with the highest pen average at Builth, with the flock’s pen of four levelling the day at £5376. Llion, who farms with his father, William, and brother, Rhys, says Wolf was a tup which he thought a lot of from early on, along with his 4000gns sale at Ruthin, Pant Womaniser. “I had Womaniser entered for Builth too, but he did well enough at Ruthin,” he adds. www.texel.co.uk 134
Founded in 2003 and run alongside the Jones family’s 1650 commercial ewe flock Llion’s early aims were simply to breed sufficient Texel rams to be used across the commercial ewes. “The first notable ewe was a Claybury ewe bought in-lamb in 2003, with others coming from the Horsethin dispersal of Austin Morgan at Brecon and also ewes bought at the Welsh National Sale from both the Loosebeare and Peacehay flocks. All of these lines are still in the flock today and Womaniser’s great grand dam is the Claybury ewe “We worked away with those ewes for a number of years and gradually I started to think about selling a few tups as well as breeding our own, so we started taking a few to Ruthin. We have only ever sold shearlings, preferring not to push the lambs and let them grow on naturally for their first year.” The priority is to produce powerful tups with good tops, skins and ends, he adds. “We want to be selling the type of tup we want to buy. They have to have the right commercial attributes to produce good prime lambs first and foremost. We use performance recording as another tool in our selection
With the flock building numbers through retaining homebred gimmers Llion added a new bloodline in 2011 with the purchase of an in-lamb Sportsmans gimmer. “Up until then the Claybury ewe had been the dearest we’d bought, but the investment in the Sportsmans ewe has certainly paid off, with this one being the dam of Wolf.” On the tup side we bought Hen Gapel Pure Gold in 2009 and he has left a real mark on the flock, delivering great females with size, stretch and easy fleshing. “He certainly helped build strength in the flock and his legacy is still being seen today. “Following that we bought Loosebeare Unique, the sire of Wolf, and again he has left a real stamp on his progeny, with great tops and ends and exceptional power.” And, for the 2017 lambing season, Llion is banking on Wolf delivering the goods, having retained a share in him and used him extensively across the 40-ewe flock. “I also bought a Roxburgh tup at Kelso with
Managed commercially, the flock lambs in March and ewes come in a week before lambing, receiving little to no supplementary feed both before and after lambing. Ewes are turned out to grass as soon as possible post-lambing, usually within a couple of days and lambs receive no creep feed either. “We generally have a field of new seeds for them to head out on to, so that does them well enough and I tend to feel the lambs have got 18 months to grow out so there is no point pushing them too early. “I also think they’re better for it, we get to see which lambs can perform at grass and they also make better sheep at the end of the day. Tup hoggs receive a little feed over the winter and sale tups receive some feed in the last six to eight weeks ahead of sale, but that’s about it.” Llion says he’s hard on the tups to ensure he only sells those which he believes will do a good job for others. “If they’re not good enough they get killed as lambs, with the same true of the ewe lambs. We have a lot of work at home, with the commercial flock, a pedigree Welsh Black herd and also a 70 site static caravan site too, so the Texels don’t get pampered at all.” He adds that the future may see ewe numbers increased slightly to give more tups to sell, but only if the quality can be maintained. “I aim to sell 16-20 tups a year at the moment, with another six or so retained for our own use. We have always aimed to sell quality commercial tups and I won’t take the focus off that just to sell a few more,” he adds.

box, but it certainly isn’t the biggest driver in our decision making. It is just one part of the equation and helps narrow down the choices sometimes.”
a high index and he has been used on ewes not put to Wolf. The Roxburgh tup is a real powerhouse and brings some great figures too, it will be interesting to see what he breeds over the next few years.”

Alan, Andrew & David Clark Garngour, Teiglum, Clarks his year’s PRT Shield – for the performance recorded pen with the best average at Kelso Ram Sales – was awarded to the Clark family, North Garngour, Lesmahagow, with their pen of eight averaging £1846.
T
Across three units (North Garngour, Blackhill and Lee Meadow), brothers Alan, Andrew and David farm 1000 owned acres plus another 280 rented, in partnership with their mum, Helen. Their 80 pedigree Texel ewes are split between three flocks –
Garngour (established in the 1980s by their father Jim), Teiglum and Clarks. The boys say they aim to breed correct sheep that are sound on their legs, with good skins and carcases, but they also need to have a bit of style. By focusing on those attributes, they have been successful in both the commercial and pedigree markets, having topped the Lanark Premier sale four times (up to 70,000gns in 2016), and also achieving top price at Kelso on two occasions.

He was one of 31 in the pen, which averaged more than £1000. Three years later, they again secured the lead price at the sale, with Teiglum Nightlight, a Craighead Masterpiece son, selling at £8000.
The standard of the sheep at the sale has improved a huge amount over the years and the demand has increased to match”.
“Dad started selling at Kelso more than 30 years ago and we’ve never missed a sale since. In that time, Texels have gone from being sold in small numbers, to now being the most dominant breed at the sale.
“However, there’s so much competition from other sellers, you can never afford to let your standards drop and we are always conscious of that when deciding which tup lambs to bring out shearlings,” he adds.
“Good commercial sheep will always sell well at Kelso and many people are now choosing to buy their stock rams there as well,” says Andrew.

Research & Development Projects
Texel research project could open door to alternative lamb carcass grading methods and assist in increasing flock resilience to disease new genomic research project led by the British Texel Sheep Society will use objective carcass data and carcass condemnation information to provide a unique insight in to the breed’s genetics.
The new £1.6m project, part funded by Innovate UK, is aimed at accelerating developments in sheep breeding and the commercial application of objective carcass grading to sheep production, explained Texel Sheep Society chief executive John Yates.
The project, which is being undertaken in collaboration with Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and a leading processor, is the next step in the Society’s genomic research programme.
“Through the three-year course of the project thousands of Texel-sired lamb carcasses will be analysed by a combination of computer tomography (CT scanning) and video image analysis (VIA) to provide detailed information on the relative lean
A
Video Image Analysis (VIA) Providing timely, accurate, transparent and objective information on lean meat, bone and fat composition of each carcass. To compliment the VIA data, further research initiatives will also incorporate carcass trait data along with CT derived information at the ram breeder level to indicate meat quality traits, using CT and intra muscular fat level as a proxy.

Sharing the data provided by VIA along the supply chain to improve communication and drive informed decision making to allow all sectors to benefit based on objective measurements.

“Sharing the data provided by VIA throughout the supply chain will allow all sectors to make more informed business decisions based on objectively measured information. At a processor level, it will allow better carcass and primal cut sorting according to retailer requirements, while at a farm level the benefits are multi-faceted.
Jo Conington (SRUC) with Rufus
SRUC livestock geneticist Joanne Conington said that this is the first meat sheep breed in Europe to embrace genomic selection combining new, objectivelyrecorded VIA and CT carcass information with key maternal performance indicators including disease resistance for footrot and mastitis. “Having more information with which to select breeding animals, gives breeders flexibility to favour animals with specific attributes that better meet market specifications, as well as improving host resistance to economicallyimportant endemic diseases,” she added. “There is currently a significant disconnect between carcass slaughter data and the breeding sector which provides the genetics for commercial sheep producers. Implementing VIA and linking it with phenotyping flocks will enable improved feedback of valuable carcass information and shorten the link between commercial and pedigree breeders,” said Mr Yates. Mr Yates pointed out that at present only about half of UK produced lambs meet the target EUROP conformation and fat classification specification, resulting in waste at both farm and processor level. On top of this, the current EUROP classification grid doesn’t always truly reflect the retail value of each carcass. Farmers are not rewarded for producing carcasses with a greater proportion of higher value cuts, such as the loin.
Research & Development Projects
The project will introduce a nucleus of recorded commercial producer phenotyping farms providing Texel sired lambs to the processor, with these linked back to pedigree Texel nucleus flocks already participating in the Society’s network of ‘Pedigree Phenotyping Farms’ which have been an essential part of the Society’s highly successful initial genomics research, studying hard to measure health traits for both mastitis and footrot.
It will allow more informed on-farm management and breeding decisions to optimise feed use and carcass selection to fit market requirements,” added Mr Yates.

meat yields, with CT proxy traits used to provide meat quality indicators. The data will then be analysed to develop carcass trait genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs) for the Texel breed which will provide unique information for breeders and ram buyers to make the future selections on,” he said.
139
This new project will allow the creation of unique new GEBVs that will support the Texel breeding programme and reflect the valuable commercial information available from meat processors.
Research & Development Projects www.texel.co.uk 140
“These new GEBVs should allow commercial farmers to select rams based on carcass composition information and thus produce lambs better suited to modern market requirements, allowing them to add value to their lamb crop in one easy step.” It is, for example, estimated that lambs selected at target fat class 3L and 18kg deadweight could offer significant variation in VIA predicted weights of leg, chump, loin, breast and shoulder primal joints, with loin variance being the highest. “At a deadweight price of £3.80/kg this variance could be
worth an additional £8.21 to £13.68 a lamb.” Mr Yates said the development of the Society’s latest genomic research project would provide a real opportunity to push accurate phenotypic measurements into genotype evaluations, leading to the development of a number of key genomic indices of economic importance for health, welfare and productivity traits which will drive the Texel breed’s development at a commercial level. Additionally, the study will record and analyse carcass condemnation data and examine links between phenotype, genetics and management for a number of key diseases, he explained.

Regional Club Flock Competition Results 2016 Club Contact Details 2017 Club Sale Dates 2017
Derbyshire 2016 started with a flutter of snow at our annual Christmas Meal, held at the Bentley Brook Inn, with more than 70 members and guests in attendance.
Derbyshire Club
his year saw many members flying north to visit some fabulous flocks of Texels. As always we were overwhelmed with how much effort goes into our visit by the flocks and their families; cakes in abundance. Year on year the trip attracts members from all eras, this shows just how well our trip caters for everyone. A special thank you to Frank Rushton and Kerry Allsopp for all their hard to work to ensure the trip runs as smoothly as possible.
T
The club’s next big event was the very well attended open day, kindly held by Paul Kirkham and family, of the Water’s Edge Flock. The day was extremely well supported from members far and wide with some of the best flocks in our country in attendance! John Mellin of Hull House Texels had the difficult job of judging the splendid entries of Texels put before him, the Boden family deservedly taking the championship with a shearling ewe.
www.texel.co.uk 150
With the Derbyshire Club traditional Welly-Wanging and a superb range of raffle prizes, the open day raised more than £600 for a children’s charity close to the Kirkham family heart. We then move into August with our flock competition being judged by Will McCaffrey. After two long days travelling around the Derbyshire members, Will had to choose the best from a tremendous quality of flocks the members had to offer. Another well supported presentation evening with lots of members and families in attendance.
Champion Large Flock C Boden, Sportsman’s Champion Small Flock H Fletcher, Damdale Champion Novice Flock R Darlington, Beresford Dale. September saw our annual Show and Sale held at Bakewell Market, thank you for all the continued support from sponsors and members. A small improvement in trade from last year hopefully will encourage higher entries for 2017. A special thank you must go to Robert Pierce for judging such a splendid show of sheep, his champion being taken by the Newton family with a homebred tup lamb which marks an extremely successful year for them. Reserve went to an exquisite ewe lamb from local member Michael Turner. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee and members for the Club’s continued support, without which our Club would not see the continued growth in membership year after year. All our events attract the crowds and we are definitely the Club to be in.

he pre-sale show was judged this year by Adrian Windsor, Whitland, Carmarthen, who, because of his own notable achievements, needed little introduction.
Show Results
Mr Windsor awarded championship honours to an impressive shearling ewe from S & C Davies, Egryn, which went on to sell to D Evans, Melin Y Wig. The reserve Champion was awarded to the shearling ram from A Foy, Parkside, which was snapped up by C l & C Watkins, Oswestry. The sale ring was packed as per usual and the selling brisk, resulting once again in an impressive clearance of stock.

Dyfed he year kicked off with our dinner, members enjoyed an informal affair at our regular haunt, The Cottage Inn, Llandeilo. The evening was topped off with a light hearted “awards” ceremony conducted by Hywel Davies (Tyrcan).
we introduced the Most Impressive Animal award, voted for by the attendees. Two ram lambs shared the plaudits this year, a Deveronvale Viscount son from the Teilo flock and an Aman Watcyn Wyn son from the Aman flock, both destined for Carlisle.
Our progeny show was again successful, with Jeff Aiken (Procters) taking responsibility for the judging duties. The Watkins family (Cwmcerrig) swept all before them, taking the overall championship with a pen of five lambs sired by Eryri Van Dango, and the reserve championship with a pair of Glenside Razzle Dazzle lambs.
August and September saw members successfully sell numerous animals at several sales, with many achieving four figures. This was also a busy time judging for our members Tomos Evans (Welsh) officiating at the Northern Irish Premier show and Roland Watkins (Cwmcerrig) at the Welsh Premier show. Earlier in the year John Eirian Davies had the honour of judging in Paris at the Salon International de l’Agriculture. September saw another first for the Club as we held our first club Show and Sale at Carmarthen Market. Judge for the day was Frank Rushton (Fresh Fields) his champion was a stylish ewe lamb from DJJ Watkins & Co (Cwmcerrig), she was sired by Eryri Van Dango and was part of the champion pen of lambs from the progeny show. She sold for the top price of 1300gns.
T
Dyfed Club
The club developed our activities further by introducing a club show to the programme. This year we worked with the Cothi Bridge Show Society to integrate our classes into their Texel section that was ably judged by Geoff Morgan (Blaencar). Taking top honours was a ewe from the Tyngwndwn flock of the Reed family and winning the group of three was the Watkins family (Cwmcerrig). In 2017 the Club will be holding the club show at Lampeter show.
www.texel.co.uk
The flock competition was judged over two days by Dye Clark and, although hampered by a terrible toothache, he travelled on the winding roads of West Wales in search of our champion flock. The presentation evening was once again held in the Cottage Inn, Llandeilo, and once more the champion flock was awarded to the Teilo flock of J E & L Davies. We continued into August with our Ewe and Ram Safari, where we visited a number of flocks who had animals to sell in the sales throughout August and September. To add a bit of spice to the mix, this year
152
The Dyfed Club concluded the year with the ever popular in-lamb sale. Taking top honours from the judges Evan and Sian Davies (Llwyngan) was the Welsh flock of Selwyn & Tomos Evans. An aged ewe by Kelso Picasso was champion and sold for 1050gns to the judges, reserve champion was a gimmer from the Welsh flock, she made top price of the evening at 1100gns. All in all an enjoyable and successful year was had and the Dyfed Texel Breeders look forward to an exciting and prosperous 2017. We would like to thank all our sponsors for their continued support.

Our AGM and skittles night in November was entertaining, with Paul King and I heading up proceedings for another year. After a brief period missing our Carcase Competition - it was held again at King’s slaughter house with some good prices for excellent carcases.
Our flock competition was judged by a “retired” Colin and Kate Ponting - results as per table.
A quiet Christmas meal at the Green Dragon brought the year to an end, with everybody looking forward to lambing with new tups or old, and I hope a good year behind us.
I
Sunday 31 July saw a visit to the Lawrence’s Coton flock. I am told that excellent sheep and refreshments were provided thanks to Margaret and Richard - unfortunately again I wasn’t with them. We had a little get together at Beanhill Farm - 21st August, which was cold and wet - so hence a bit of food, no sheep walk - as needed full winter clothing for a walk.
The Club’s in-lamb sale on 3rd December at Worcester had some excellent gimmers sold for consistently good prices - no sky high figures, but nothing at the lower end of the scale, leaving us with an excellent average.
What vagaries the European exit will deal the industry - none of us know. The quality Texel male and female will be able to take us forward hopefully with a bit of tax to pay. Wishing you all the best for 2017.
James Kimber Chairman
September saw the Club sale in Worcester with sale of rams, more rams sold also at the Hop and Cheese commercial sale.

n May we had a social get together after lambing at the Swindon Greyhounds - generally to lose some money. Our main show is the Royal Three Counties with many club members exhibiting. Although extremely wet leading up to the show, the standard of sheep was good with a few rosettes coming our way. The Club put on a stand, with a competition for quality of presentation, won by the team who put it together - which was excellent. Unfortunately, agreeing to wash a herd of cows, I missed out on the social.

We started the year with our annual Flock Visit at the beginning of June when we visited the Auldhouseburn, Glenside, Hulmestone and Scrogtonhead flocks where we viewed four outstanding flocks, each putting on a wonderful show of sheep. A very enjoyable weekend was had by all and the warm welcome and hospitality which we received at each farm was much enjoyed.
he next event was our stock judging competition and barbecue which was well attended and held at Oldfield Farm, Caithness (by kind permission of Charles and Isobel Angus). We judged classes of Texel shearling tups, gimmers, tup lambs and ewe lambs. Our master judge was Angus Sutherland. All members and guests enjoyed a very good barbecue. Results of the stockjudging competitions were as follows:-

Having fun at Ashby Show
he Midland Texel Club has enjoyed a really busy and successful year under the newly elected chair Mandy Kellet and secretary Toni Platts. We are lucky to have a solid foundation laid down by the previous chair and committee and continue to enjoy their support as we try to grow and raise the profile of the Club. We are encouraged by the growing membership in our region and hope to see this continue.
Rutland and Ashby Show are both local shows which we encourage members to attend. This year they were well supported, especially Ashby Show, which hosted us for our official Club show. We had a refreshment marquee, stock judging competition and meat display counter to show off the very best that Texel sheep have to offer to our customers. It was a great day out and I would encourage people to make the effort to attend these events next year where we plan on making it even better. The Club flock visit to Matt Prince in Chesterfield was a fabulous event and again well supported. Matt and his family were very generous in their hospitality. We enjoyed a great display of quality Texel
and Beltex Sheep and all drooled over the delicious looking food in their farm shop. So far for 2017 we look set to enjoy flock visits to both Andrew Pinny as winner of Midland Champion Flock 2016 and Stuart Currie who has kindly offered to host the Club. We look forward to formalising the dates and letting members know. The annual flock competition was judged by Stuart Currie. There was a large entry from the Club, taking three busy days to get round everybody. Our dinner and presentation of trophies was held at The Attic Rooms, Cold Ashby. It was a great night and wonderful to see everyone having a great time. I would like to congratulate all of the members for their show and sale successes over the past year and wish you all success going forward. On behalf of the Club I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all members for their continued support and work throughout the year. I would like to welcome the new members to the Club and would encourage anyone considering joining to please feel free to contact myself or the secretary for any enquiries.

The sale saw an improved trade on ram lambs with the females selling well as always. The shearling rams, despite a high standard, didn’t sell as well as usual. At our latest Club meeting several members thought that the sale date was a little early for peak local demand.

ollowing a busy lambing season the first Club outing was our annual flock visit, this year to Derbyshire. We had the pleasure of visiting three flocks, Frank, Kerry and Ashley Rushton’s Freshfields flock, followed by Andrew and Bridget Weston’s Limestone flock and finally Ben Vernon’s Charben flock. We saw many exceptional sheep and received the most fantastic hospitality, for which we are grateful.

CCM Auctions conducted our Annual Club sale on the 15th / 16th September. The show, sponsored by Carrs Billington, was kindly judged by Jonathan Watson Brijon Texels, where he awarded Supreme champion to Jennifer Aiken’s shearling ram and reserve champion to female champion, F & H J Booth’s shearling ewe. Other class winners included P K Woof’s ram lamb, S J & SL Beachell’s recorded ram lamb and D Nesbitt’s recorded shearling ram and A Harker’s ewe lamb. Strong trade saw J Robinson top the shearling ewe trade at 2000gns, with Stuart Currie topping at 1000gns. Shearling rams topped with D A Towell at 2300gns and 2200gns followed by J W Mellin at 1900gns. Ram lambs reached a peak with Peter Woof’s 2600 gns. Other notable sales achievements from Club members saw S. Currie gain a Worcester centre record female record for his outstanding shearling ewe at 16,000gns at the English National sale. John Mellin also had tremendous success at the Scottish National, Lanark, achieving 13,000gns for a shearling ewe.
I had the pleasure, as incoming chairman, to judge our flock competition, which gave me a great opportunity to see many members in home surroundings and gives so much more understanding of everyone’s different situations. Our annual dinner took place in November at The Bridge Hotel, Walshford. A new award was introduced by me, for the most notable Club success of the year which went to Stuart Currie for his tremendous success with his Worcester gimmer. The trophy for most points gained at local shows across the area was awarded to Steven Kirby. The raffle and other charity money raised over the year went to North Air Ambulance along with a creditable amount of money to Cancer Trust raised from a charity auction of a shepherds crook kindly donated by Stuart Calvert and family. Shortly after this was our annual In-lamb sale, again conducted by CCM Auctions, Skipton. Confidently judged by Mrs Alison North, it saw Spiros Spyros’s shearling ewe take champion with James Robinson’s ewe taking reserve. Prices topped at 2200gns. We, as a Club, very much look forward to the coming year with our first opportunity to host the AGM Social weekend at Oulton Park in November 2017. I would like to thank all members, new and old, for your continued support

Our club events began this year with another cracking in-lamb female sale at Chelford. Quality stock were in demand, resulting in good solid trade. Our sale leader was the pre-show reserve champion, a Ben Vernon ewe lamb, selling for 2250gns. Gimmers reached 1800gns for the show champion from the Gray family at Ettrick. Our oldest active member, Bill Higham, dispersed his Croston flock at Chelford, selling to a top of 1000gns. Bill has been a lifetime member of the NWTBC and we must thank him for all his efforts and support throughout the years. I must give special mention to Richard Eades, an auctioneer from Chelford market who sadly passed away recently. Richard worked tirelessly for the club and the Texel breed and we have a lot to thank him for. For our flock visit we joined with the Northern Area club and visited Frank Rushton (Fresh Fields) Andrew Weston (Limestone) and Ben Vernon (Charben). Quality stock and great examples of the breed were seen at all three and a big thank you to all families for their excellent hospitality. In August we held our annual sale at Junction 36 Kendal. Peter Woof was awarded the championship with a gimmer and reserve with a tup lamb. James Robinson topped the sale, selling his gimmer for 1800gns. Congratulations to Andrew Weston who won the ewe lamb championship. Thanks to Peter and Rose Woof for the hog roast.
Our final sale of the year was at Clitheroe Auction Mart. The championship went to a shearling ram from Procters Farm Ltd selling for 780gns. Reserve champion was Jill Mortimer Tarbatt with a gimmer. Elizabeth Tarbatt won the young handlers competition. Our October flock competition was judged by Tom Evans (Welsh). It was pleasing to see a large number of flocks entering the competition. The Hull House flock of John, Linda and Duncan Mellin was overall champion and Ben Vernon, Charben, was reserve. The well-supported presentation evening took place at the Yew Tree Inn, Heath Charnock. Our Judge was accompanied by his good friend Dafydd, who treated us all by singing the Welsh National Anthem. Thanks go to Agri Lloyd who have sponsored the Club this year. Their support at shows, sales and open days, the knowledge they have shared and the hospitality extended has been gratefully received. We look forward to working with them again in 2017/18 and continue to encourage all breeders to use the code TEXEL NW when purchasing. Congratulations to Arkle Texels for winning the prize draw. Finally I thank our sale judges, James Robinson, Steve Richardson and Will Peill as well as Jill our Club secretary, the committee and members for their support in my final year as chairman. A massive thanks goes to Gemma Brown for all her hard work and dedication to the Club. I would like to wish Robert Pierce our incoming chairman and the North West Texel Breeders Club all the best for the future.

For the fifth year the club held an outing to Kingsfield Linlithgow for a Golf and Laser Shooting Day. Once again this was a great day both for the sport and the socialising, fast becoming a day to look forward to. The Show and Sale at Lanark in September met a steady trade with a very good clearance rate of 89%. The championship was awarded to a shearling ram from Robert Laird, Cambwell, which was later sold for 1800gns and reserve was a ram lamb from Clark Farms, Teiglum, which sold for 900gns. Top price was 2400gns from Alan Chisholm, Wester Moy. 29 Shearlings average £552, 136 Ram Lambs average £500.37.

The overall winner of the competition was Gordon Gray’s Ettrick Flock, 2nd was Robert Laird, Cambwell, and joint 3rd Alan Cullen, Craighead, and J & H Clark, Garngour. This year’s flock competition attracted an entry of 21 flocks and resulted in a marathon three days for this year’s judge Alistair Gault, Forkins. The flock competition was moved to the first weekend in July to accommodate the judge Tom Evans of the Welsh flock. After a busy two days travelling from South Shropshire into Powys and Cheshire, Tom picked the Plasucha flock of Robert Bennett as his champion flock. There was no three day trip this year due to a problem finding host flocks. It was decided to have a trip to the Great Yorkshire Show instead which was very well supported. We visited the Hullhouse flock of the Mellin family on the Monday afternoon where we saw some very good sheep and enjoyed excellent hospitality. We stayed overnight at the Coniston Hotel, Skipton and had a good day at the show on the Tuesday before travelling home. We were invited to Lancaster for our one day trip to an open day at the Procter’s flock. Jeff and Jennifer Aiken treated us to a well organised flock visit with excellent hospitality.

Moving on to the sales, I would like to congratulate all members who have done very well at both club and national sales.
Shrewsbury Sale was yet again well attended by prospective customers and more than 100 different buyers were invoiced for sheep on the day by Halls Auctioneers. The pre-sale Show was very ably judged by Ben Vernon, of the Charben flock, who picked a shearling ewe from the Claybury Texels flock to take home supreme champion. The ewe was bought for 1250gns by the judge. Shearling rams averaged over £600 per head with a solid clearance throughout. A E Williams & Son took home champion with their shearling ram at our Welshpool Sale, as judged by Euros Davies of the Canllefaes flock. The ram sold for 1400gns. Trade was strong throughout with 20 rams reaching 850gns or more. Finally, I would like to thank not only the committee members for their help over the past year, but also our Club secretary Shirley for doing a fantastic job keeping the Club running smoothly. The first Club sale at Carlisle, was judged by Robbie Wilson of the Milnbank Flock, his champion, Douganhill Young Gun, from Brian MacTaggart sold for 12,000gns. Top at this sale however was Knock Yankee who sold to a consortium of buyers for 30,000gns. Averages were up by £400 on the year. The second sale saw a steady trade and although it didn’t achieve the five figure prices of the first sale, it was still a great success. The female sale held at the beginning of December saw a good clearance, also with increased averages. Our top female price to date was at a club sale of £6800 for a Sportsmans gimmer.
