LEADING
7fHIS afternoon for the first time in their W' athletic history, St. Mary's College and Santa Clara College meet on the Rugby gridiron to battle with all the strategy of their minds as well as the strength of their bodies, for the honors of their respective Alma Mater and decide which College shall retain the symbol of football supremacy. For nearly three months these two teams have been subjected to the most strenuous code of practice and training imaginable. The preliminary games throughout the season &gainst the UniverRity Freshmen teams and many others, have been but practice contests in preparation fOr this encounter. Not unlike the annual Stanford-California struggle will be the big game today. The clean-spirited rivalry existing between St. Mary's and Santa Clara is now at its height for very natural reasons. The contest today will not only decide the gridiron superority but will determine to whom the atheletic honors of the year are to go. So far they are evenly divided, St. Mary's having come off triumphant at the annual track meet and Santa Clara walking off with the Intercollegiate Baseball ChampionshiD of the Pacific Coast. Hence the winners of the football game shall own the honors of the year. Coaches and trainers have worked long and earnestly over their respective squads and the final result is that each Co ll ege puts forth her foremost set of representatives Our send off to them is: - May the better team win!

HARRY A. J. McKENZIE 7jiHE most popular and most active man in W- Student Affairs at Santa Clara College is Coach McKenzie. He reigns supreme not only on the football field but equally on every point on the campus. Ever ready with a funny song or story, where the crowd is; there will be found "Mac" in the center. Be for e entering Santa Clara in 1906 McKenzie was a student at the Polytechnic High School in San Francisco. In his last year there he was captain of the eleven and played at right end. When Rugby was first introduced into Santa Clara three years ago, the man chosen to lead the first squad of Rugbyites -that ever' wore the Red and White, was Harry McKenzie. From a field of the very rawest material he together with Coach Howard whipped a team into shape which, considering their newness to the game, passed an exceedingly successful season. It was under McKenzie's captaincy III 1907 that the largest Rugby sco::-e ever made on the Pacific Coast was run up. The game was against the best team San Jose High School ever put on the field and when full time was called the Collegians were credited with 87 points agsinst their opponents nothing, and this without trying for a single goal. During his college career Coach McKenzie has been prominent in every campus activity. He was a member of both the House of Philhistorians and the Philalethic Senate and for three years was closely connected with every production staged by the Senior Dramatic Club.

In 1909 he managed the Varsity Baseball team. At the close of a season full of t r i u mph s McKenzie took the team to Honolulu where for two months they met an come;s. Games were played with the men from the warships of the United States Fleet which was then visiting in Honoblu. Besides these several other contests were held with the best teams in the Hawaiian Islands and Japan. The Santa Clara team was victorious in all but two games and as a consequence annexed the champio?ship of the Orient. As a manager McKenzIe was as great:it success as when acting in the capacity of Captain or Coach. • As Santa Clara Coach he is a man of men. He possesses a perfect knowledge of every rudiment of the game necessary to make a Rugby player and he knows how to impart this knowledge. The men who represent Santa Clara today have been instructed in every detail. They not only know theoretical football ,but the practical side of the art as well Coach McKenzie has given his men several stiff games during the preliminaries; he has put them up against heavier teams and faster teams, so that dubious as the outcome of today's assuredly is, they are prepared to give a good account of themselves. The Santa Clara Student Body as well as his innumerable friends have great confidence in Coach McKenzie and will back him and his team to the last. Harry is a native of San Francisc<? He is a prominent mpmber of th~ OlymplC Club and is one of the star players m the backfield of the Rugby team. At present in the College he is an honorary member .of. both branches of the Literary Congress, IS m the College Quartette and belongs to the Glee Club.

financial and ma'1agerial lines, Santa Clara this yp.ar is exceptionally fortunate in possessing a man whose character is the very personification of energy itself· Manager Boles is full of that go-to-itism, which is bound to make its mark in the world. He has handled the affairs of the Football Team with a masterful hand . "Class" Boles, as he is known on the campus, made his debut as manager last year when he had charge of the Second Varsity Baseball Team. His ability in this capadty was recognized and appreciated by the Student Body as a consequ~nce he was elected last spring to the position of Football manager. He has kept the trust placed in him and especially in the task of arranging today's contest he has shown marked executive ability. Manager Boles registers from Fresno and is in his Sophomore year. Besides being on the football squad his figure is a conspicuous one on the cinder-path. "Class" belongs to the House of Philhistorians and is also a member of the Mandolin Club.

7jiHE all-important position of conditioning W the Santa Clara team is this season in the hands of Edward Gerald White and Francis Raymond McGovem. With sUch famous preuecessors as Andrew J Glaner and Prof. Edward B. Sparks of the Olympic Club, the Santa Clara trainers of this year have had a standard set them that demands of them a combination of eager earnestness and cool resolve. That they possess this ability was well shown throughout the entirety of the season. Besides being handy with the bandage and plaster, they know just what the men under their charge are to do, and what they need to keep them in the best p08sible shape. The result of the diligence will no doubt be se"n when the Santa Clara team trots on the turf this afternoon. Edwdrd Gerald White registers from Watsonville and is one of the most popular men in the Sophomore Class. A member of the House of Philhistorians in which organization he holds the office of Recording Secretary he bids fair in time to walk in the footsteps of his renowned uncle, United States Senator Stephen M. White. Francis Raymond McGovern hails from Sonora and works side by side with "Doc" White in the class of 1912. He is the shortstop and Captain of the 1910 baseball nine. On last year's championship .t eam he held down his position at short in such majorleague style that at the close of a most successful season he was un:mimously elected to lead this year's Red and White ball-tossers. "Terry" is one of the most valuable men on the Sellior Dramatic Club's stage-staff and is as popular on the Campus as he is on the diarr:ond .

ijlHE Santa Clara Bleachers are in the W charge of two most abel men, Addison Cecil Posey and Felton John Taylor. They have the the art of noise-producing down to a nicety and are expected to do justi~e to themselves in this afternoon's little battle of lung power. The supporters of the Red and White have ever- been famous for their rooting ability, but today they are determined to set a new standard when they start flaunting defiance across the fi eld at the Pink and Blueites. Addison Cecil Posey registers from Oakland. For the past two years he has been conspicuous in the lime light of College theatricals and as an amateur thespian he has few equals in Santa Clara. He belongs to the Glee Club and is in the College Quartette. He is in his Junior year. Felton John Taylor comes from San Francisco. He is a member of the Freshman Class and belongs to the Glee Club besides being prominent in all Student Body affairs .

JAMES KING JARRETT ]J1ROM far off Honolulu comes the man who this year will guide the destinies of the Santa Clara Team on the gridiron. Whether the Red and White scores a glorious victory or is lowered in honorabl e Jefeat, James King Jarrett will have done his duty to his team and to his College. Previous to entering Santa Clara College, Captain Jarrett played on the St. Louis University eleven in Honolulu for two years. It was while holding down the position of full-back that he gained his great tackling ability which at present is one of the strongest features of his playing. Besides being one of the surest tacklers in the Santa Clara line-up, Jarrett is one of the most aggressive players on the team and is especially strong on the offense. A perfect knowledge of the game acquired from three years of Rugby experience, combined with an influence which commands the l0ve and respect of every man on the team, "Barney Joy" as the campus knows him, is an idol of the Red and White bleacherites. Captain Jarrett graduates with the class of 1910. He is a member of the Philalethic Senate, belongs to the College Glee Club and is registered in Law. His position on the team is Right-Rear Rank.

Clothes are So Different
JIJtlR. Faulkner has been at St. -Mary's but 2W\ little over a month. When he commenced his task he had at hand, good but somewhat neglected, material.. He has succeeded in so short a time in instilling into , his proteges a good knowledge of straight Rugby. It is freely admitted that with the present material at hand, Faulkner's pronounced ability would make of it a factor for first honors in Coast Rugby circles. His disciplinary powers are wonderful. Faulkner is a member of St. Mary's College Faculty. Before coming to St. Mary's he made his studies at Stanford, on whose victorious Rugby teams he "starred" as full back .

&;.T. Mary's found its Rugby team without a coach. Immediately Mr. Howe vol" unteered his services to aid St. Mary's team in every way consistent with his arduous duties at the University of California. He made many trips ~o St. M'a ry's betimes. When Mr. Fau lkner was fortunately secured "Mother" Howe advised with him at stated times to the keen pleasure of the hardworking and heady coach. Since the California-Stanford game, Mr. " Howe' has ' made his headquarters ' at St~ Mary's, and with Mr. Faulkner has since labored to round St. Mary's into its pre.,ent splendid conditiCin. "Mother" is an "old boy" of the Christian Brothers, being an alumni of ' St. Joseph's . College, Sidney, Australia. Howe says he feels right at home at St. Mary's. J!;;'

Dickson, captain of St. Mary's Rugbyites, is a graduate of the Santa Rosa High School. He entered St. Mary's in 1908, and is now a Sophomore student in the Engineering Department. Dickson is an all around athlete. He is prominent in track work and enjoys the reputation of being the best pole vaulter in his college. His work at the intercollegiate track meet with Santa Clara last May proved him to be an invaluable point getter for the Red and White. A veteran football player, Dickson has brought a wealth of experience to hiE work as captain of this year's team . He played Rugby last season with St. Mary's and distinguished himself to ' such an extent that from the organization of the Rugby squad this fall he was regarded as one of the bulwarks of the fifteen . He plays on the three quarter line. ~
