I am sincerely orry I cannot see the game on November 12 .

B ut an engagement rnacle a long time ago will deny me t hat pleaswre. A few weeks ago I saw the Pitt-Notre Dc1;me game . I t was one of the finest games I ever saw. As an old player I enjoyed every second of it-th la t qita rter 'most of all.

And with all due regard to my friends in Ohio-to Ohio State, its teams, and its tiidents-l hope the P enn tea1n will do as well against Ohio State as Pitt did again t Not-re Dame.

The University of Pennsylvania The Ohio State Universitg

~~ Fifty-nine years ago this fal1 the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, forerunner of the Ohio State University, opened its doors in Columbus w~th a faculty of seven and a score of students.

Today Ohio State is the fourth largest stat~ university in the co!-lntry, drawing its students from every county of Ohio, from every state m the Union, and from a dozen foreign lands.

In 1892, in the days when athletics at the University were in their infancy, the student body numbered 465. . .

When the first bleachers were built at a cost of $1CX)() m 1902, Ohio State had 1547 students. By 1912, just after the University had been accepted for membership in the Western S:onfere:1ce, 3928 wer_e e_nrolled.

A decade later, in 1922, as the Ohio Stadium was tbegmmng to take form, the enrollment had leaped to 8850. Today the University has a student body of 15,CX)() annually. . .

To provide for this increasing number of students, the Umvers1~y has gradually grown in facilities and personnel. Today the 'S 'tate of Ohio has an investment exceeding 22 millions of dollars in the University.

The faculty numbers 800 in its 10 colleges, the graduate school, and four special schools.

The influences of the University, however, extend far beyond the bounds of the campus. The facilities of its laboratories, its research bureaus, and its extension services make the University of direct benefit throughout the state. Practical value of research work done on the campus in recent years is estimated at millions of dollars.

Scores of meetings and conferences state-wide in their scope are held on the campus each year. Among the outstanding events of this kind are Farmers' Week and the Ohio Educational Conference.

The University offers its aid to ,the high schools of the state. It sponsors the Ohio High School Journalism As ociation and the Ohio High School Debating League, while also working with the Ohio High School Athletic Association for the betterment of inter-scholastic athletics. In addition, the facilities of 1.he college of education are at the service of Ohio's public school system in the interest of improving the state's educational program.

The University radio station, WEAO, is one of the oldest and best college stations in the United States. It reaches 86 coun,ties of Ohio with its programs of education and entertainment.

Ohio has long been recognized as a college state. Before the state organization was effected, township lands had been set aside for the support of colleges. As an outgrowth of this early interest in higher education, Ohio State has grown to a position of leadership among American universities.

Nine year later, th, Charity School became an Academy, and in 1755 the Academy became a College. ·w ith the granting of a charter to "The University of Penn ylvania" in 1791 the in titution became in name a well a in fact the fir t university in this country.

Pre ident Thoma S. Gates' widely known policy of "athletic for all," combined with a comprehen ive phy ical education program and the phy ical equipment for athletics provided by t~e Hutchin on Gymna ium, the Palestra, Frankl111 Field Stadium and a number of other recreational field . insure ample opportunity for students at the Univer ity to combine phy ical with mental development.

Tn addition, dramatic organizations, literary and debating societie , tudent publications and variou other tu dent organizations and extracurricular activitie enable the Pennsylvania student to enjoy the varied contacts of undergraduate lif e which constitute an important phase of the ~ducational proce .

Of particular intere t in the history of the niv e rsity of Penn ylvania is the prominent part taken by the Univer ity in the pursuit of new ventures in education.

The first medical chool in thi country was establi heel at Penn ylvania in 1765 when John i\Iorgan, \Vill ia rn Shippen, Jr., Adam Kuhn and Benjamin Ru h, four young phy ician , ct about to make the standards of medical in truction and practice in this country equal to those in Europe.

In 1768, The University of Pennsylvania establi shed the fir t Department of Botany in thi country, and the first hair of Law in thi s country \\'a establi heel at Pennsylvania in 1790, " ·ith Jam e \Vil on, later a ju tice of the United States upreme Court, a its incumbent.

The fir t Teaching Ho pita! was establi hed in 187-J. by Dr. William Pepper, later Provost of the niversity of Penn ylvania, and the \Vharton School of Finance and Commerce, the fir t univer ity school of bu ine , wa founded at Pennsy lvania in 1881.

In 18% the first P ychological clinic in the \\·orlcl wa establi . heel by Dr. Lightner \Vitmer at the University o f Pennsylvania: in 1910 the first department of research ;11eclicine wa started in connection with the niver ity's School of i\fedicine. and in 1916 the first comprehensive Craduate chool of Medicine \\·a established.

In 1 -J.3 the University of P nn sy lvania was the first, with Haverford College, a neighboring in . titution, to in titute intercollegiate athletic , (cricket).

The1·e are approximately 6500 students enrolled today in the Univer ity a candidates for degrees on full-time, and 1700 are enrolled as candidates for degrees on part-time.

Other part-time enrollment, made up of student who are no t candidate for degrees, but who are regi tered in the Evening and Extension Schools and in other department of instruction, either as candidate for certificates or as special students, totals about 6500.

The majority of the 190 unit which now compri e the Univer ity community are located on a tract of approximately 150 acres along the we t bank of the chuylkill River in \Yest Philadelphia. Here the Univer ity, with it own intere t and ideals. it own res idences, tore and amu ement , ha establi heel itself almo t as a . eparate community within a city \\·ho e cultural opportunitie , hi ·toric traditions, and diver e bu ine sand indu trial activitie provide a splendid background for educational work.

The Alumni of Ohio State

Little wonder. then, that the Buckeye graduate have won place of leadersip in every field Df endeavor, making valuable contribution to science, to arts and letter , to busine s and finance, to education, to government, to indu try. and to nearly every other line of work undertaken by man.

Each year as this alumni army grow at the rate of 3CXX) every 12 months, new names are added to Ohio State's own "Hall of Fame."

Ohio State In The 10th Olympiad

By PAULL. WALKER, Columbus Dispatch Within the past ten years, Ohio State UniYer ity ha played an ever increa ingly important role in the track and field hi tory of the United States. Hanel in hand with thi ri e to nationar! collegiate track fame has come a greater intere t on the campu in minor var ity sport .

This performance left the so-called and elf-styled experts with their mouths agape. But George wa not yet satisfied. The finals of the 200-mcter dash were run off two days later. Again George surprised everyone, but him elf and hi mo t faithful follower , by placing second. In this race, Tolan was again the victor.

John Alton Claude Keller, who e initials pell his nickname. had emblazoned a country wide reputation for hi timber-topping antics, long before the Olympics were held in Los Angeles. Ja.ck and impson were, in some re pects, in the ame cla sification, but Jack's was the more precarious as he had been actively engaged during the spring months in bettering his specialized µerformances.

Keller, too, was an unknown quantity. True, he had won major races and set new marks, but he wa not always the first one to break the tape at the finish line.

However, Jack also had et his heart on becoming a member of the track team, and after many preliminary and qualifiying meet , he won his way to the final of the 110-meter high hurdle event.

After much di cu sion-on the part of the finish judges -Jack was placed fourth in this race, Percy Beard. of the Xew York A. C. and Georg Saling, Univer ity of Iowa, fini hing first and second.

However, it might be mentioned, that Jack had achieved one of his greate t goal in the preliminary trials. It was not a new sensation for Keller lo beat Saling to the tape, but in one of the qualifying heats on the west coast, Jack breasted the fini h line ahead of Beard, who has compiled one of the be t hurdling record made in recent year .

Other track and field satellite from the North IIigll Street institution who competed in the United States team finals, were John \Von owitz in the pole vault; John Black, another hurdler; Don Bennett, the speed merchant of the 1932 Big Ten meets; and Robert Brown, in the half mile event.

A much le publicized sport activity found one former wearer of the carlct and Gray becoming a member of the fencing team. Ted Lorber, former Big Ten saber champ, and runner-up to the national collegiate title, won a berth on the foil quad of Uncle Sam' aggregation.

Ted had been a saber expert, but the coach of the fencing ,team needed strength in the !foil , and so Ted was asked to make a change. He returned to Columbus after placing himself on the squad and under the tutelage of Dr. Frank Riebel, former Ohio Stai c coach, became quite proficient with the foil.

He was placed in a group of eight participant and in hi seven matchc , he wa able to win three and lose four. Two of his defeats were handed to him by those men who placed first and third in the final . The United States team did not fare , o well in this activity, being rather rudely treated by Italy, Hungary and France.

And that i the record compiled by Ohio State University in the Xth Olympiad. The three boys were able to add points to the score piled up by Uncle Sam, and in doing so have brought about a keener interest in their respective sports on the campus of the Buckeye school.

The summer of 1932 found collegians and former collegians, as well as many other amateur sport enthusia t , preparino- for the Xth Olympiad, the first one ever to be held in the United States.

Ohio tatc University \\'as not without it participants in this great athletic meet, which brought representative of practically every country to the shore of the United States, and thence to Los Angeles, where the games were held.

The zenith of Ohio tate's track history wa reached in the Olympic game , when George impson and Jack Keller raced clown the cinder path to bring honor-and a few points-to the United tates.

George Sidney Simp on, clubbed the '·Buckeye Bullet," in hi undergraduate clays, known as George to his friends, and a Sid to his family, "·as one of the two boys, who had worn the Scarlet and Gray, to become a member of the track team.

George, who bad broken, tied and et ome new speed records in the lOO·yarcl cla h and the 220·ya,rd clash while a student at the Buckeye school-with and without the use of those ever debatable starting block -was all wa heel up a far as track activities were concerned, two years ago. At lea t that is what everal eminent track experts aid.

However, George began to train la t March for the Olyn1pics. And all of the time he was training, he held a mental picture of the United States final tryout of 1928, in the back of his brain. It will be remembered that Simpson was well on his way to a po ition on the Olympic team that year, when he pulled a leg-tendon in the final race. He was leading at the time and was forced to drop out. That had been a bitter pill to wallow, and George made up his mind to run in the 1932 game.

The tory of his qualifying races is too I ng to relate.

Each time he raced he qualified, and each time he qualified he wa making better time. And even though he was running third in the races-an unheard of thing for him-George managed to crash through and place himself on the American track team When the finish of the lOO·meter dash of the Xth Olympiad had been officially recorded on the books, George Simp on, of Ohio State University, was placed as third. Eddie Tolan, the "Midnight Express" of Michigan and Ralph Metcalfe, the Marquette "Mileage Mauler" were placed first and second, respectively.

Ohio State vs. Penn I One of the mid-west's really powerful teams again t one of the east's best.

That's the attractive menu Ohio Stale athletic official are serving up for their homecoming guest this afternoon.

An Ohio State team which, only last Saturday, handed Northwestern's Purple Wildcats a 20 to 6 lacing-the worst licking they've taken from a Big Ten team since Dick Hanley took the coaching reins is meeting a Penn team which wa undefeated until last Saturday and then lost only to the great Pitt eleven.

On paper it looks like a great ball game and it probably wt/I be just that. On the basi of their comparative b . owings against Pitt Ohio State should be favored to , Ill becau ¡e Ohio State tied Pitt and Penn wa defeated 'I the Panthers.

But don't forget that Penn scored 12 points again t Pitt and neither Ohio State nor Notre Darne was able to score against the Panthers.

A victory over Penn would practically as ure Ohio State of a successful season. Of course Ohio State has only won from Ohio vVesleyan and orthwestern so far.

But Ohio State al o ha n't been defeated by anyone but Michigan.

Ties with Indiana, Pitt and \Visconsin aren't anything to tear down goal posts about, though tieing the team which beat otre Dame a week later was something. But defeats by Indiana, Pitt and Wi consin would have been infinitely worse than matters as they now stand.

If it weren't for one thing the Ohio State ea on o far would be regarded as a fair ucces .

That one thing i the fact that observers in Columbus and elsewhere hailed this year' team before it had even started practicing as the finest in recent Ohio tate hi. tory and one of the finest in the land.

It could have been, with a little different break in the luck. If injuries hadn't kept Carlie Cramer from living up to the promi e he showed last season, if a really good forward passer had been discovered, if Harry Ne1n11an hadn't been quite so accurate with tho e two touchdown bringing forward passes, if Ohio State ball carriers hadn't fumbled quite o often at critical times.

But football is a game of if and buts-a game played in college competition by 11 fighting young ters oppo ing 11 other fighting youngster .

To those who don't permit the lack of victory to spoil their clay there have been a lot of great moments in this year"s Ohio State sea 011 to date.

That goal-line stand the I uckeyes made at Pittsburgh, that 70-yarcl sprint Peterson made again Ohio State in the Wisconsin game, a forward pass catch by Sid Gillman and a tackle by that same fine encl in the \Visconsin game, tho c very perfect pass s which beat Ohio State in the Michigan game, the gallant fight put up by the Hoosiers in the Indiana "ame, and the play of the Buckeyes throughout the Northwestern game-they were all real thrills.

This was supposed to be about homecoming.

When Ohio State athletic officials cheduled Penn as the Buckeyes' homecoming opponent this season it didn't

make any great hit with with downtown coaches. ''If you're gonna play an eastern team why don't you play someone?" they wanted to know.

Penn hadn't set the world on fire last sea 011. The Quakers had won ix victories in nine starts and had defeated Wisconsin 27 to 13, Georgia Tech 13 to 12 and Swarthmore 32 to 7, but they had lost to otre Dame 49 to 0, to Cornell 7 to O and to Navy 6 to 0. [t eemed on the face of it, like a mistake. But that ,1-as late last fall.

Penn now looms as one of the best teams in the east this season. The Quakers have won from Franklin and ..\,[ arshall, Swarthmore, Dartmouth, Lehigh and Navy in convincing fashion and suffered a 19 to 12 defeat at the hands of the great Pitt team.

So it seems Penn is probably a fitting home-coming opponent and the downtown coaches are wrong again.

Today's cla h between the Quakers and Buckeyes i the fir t football engagement between the two schools but Ohio State' 17th gridiron battle with a representative of eastern football.

The Buckeyes fir t met an ea tern team in 1897 when the \Vest Virginia Mountaineer bammecl Ohio State 28 to 0. The Buckeye more than evened that score in 1900, 1902, and 1903, however, defeating the Mountaineers 27 to 0, 30 to O and 34 to 6.

Next came the Carlisle Indian in 1904 and Ohio State took a 23 to O trouncing. Syracuse defeated the Buckeye 6 to O in 1911.

The 1912 sea 011 saw Penn State visit Ohio Field and Coach John Richards take h.is Buckeye eleven off the field because of alleged rough play. The score is in the records as. "Penn State 1, Ohio tate O." The score at the time the Buckeye withdrew was something like 50 to O in Penn State's favor.

That ended Ohio State competition with eastern teams lllltil 1923.

Then Colgate visited Ohio Stadium and one of the greate t game in Columbus' memory resulted-a 23 to 23 tie.

In 1925 Ohio ,State started a two-year series with Columbia, winning the fir t game 9 to O and the econd 32 to 7. ln 1927 the Buckeyes visited Princeton and lo t 20 to 0.

The Tigers returned the visit in 1928 and a thrilling 6 to 6 tie resulted.

In 1929 Pitt wa the eastern opponent and the Panthers \\"011 l& to 2. ln 1930 the Buckeyes returned the compliment by defeating Pitt 16 to 7. Navy was also on Ohio State"s 1930 schedule and took a 27 to O trouncing.

In 1931 Navy vi itecl Ohio taclium and a 20 to O victory for Ohio tate resulted .

Thi year¡s O to O tic with the Pitt team which beat .;'(Otre Dame is of too recent memory to need comment.

In the 17 games to elate against eastern teams the Buckeyes have won eight, the easterners six and three have re ulted in ties.

This was supposed to be about homecoming.

The littl northwest Ohio Conference pre ent an enigma at thi stage of the race. Any prediction as to the probable champion would be hazardous and merely a gue s. Findlay, Bluffton and vVilmington all mu t be con iclered in the race \\'hile Defiance is given a look-see. Wilmington i a probationary member and a newcomer in the northwest Ohio circuit.

Today· game mark the eleventh meeting between Ohio State and an ea tern opponent since the erection of the tadium in 1923. 111 previou game , Ohio tale has been returned victoriou on five occa ions. Only two games resulted in defeats whi le three other ended in ties.

The Buckeyes have not lost an intersectional contest to an eastern foe in the taclium.

Colgate provided the first stadium intersectional argument in 1923 and battled Ohio tate to a 23-23 tie in one of the wilcle t game ever ecn on any gridiron.

It took a 70-yarcl run by Hoge \,Yorkman with only cconcls remaining to give the ' carlet and Gray a deadlock in thi contest The 1924 campaign wa devoid of intersectional combat but in 1925, the Buckeyes opened a two-year seri es with Columbia by winning 9 to O in the stadium. It was in this game that Eel Hess won recognition which later led to hi being named All-American guard.

Ohio tate went to New York in 1926 and repeated its triumph oYcr the Lion of 1orning icle only thi time by the more decisive core of 32 to 7.

In 1927, Ohio State inaugurated a two--year serie with Princeton in Palmer Stadium. This brought the most decisive defeat the Buckeyes have yet u tainecl in an eastern intersectional contest, the Tiger clawing them into submission by a one-sided 20 to O score.

In 1928 however, it was a different tory, the Scarlet and Gray battling the Tiger to a 6 to 6 tie in the Ohio Stadium. \ Vittmer cored for Princeton early in the game, but Byron Eby knotted the score late in the game with a sensational 14-yard touchdown gallop at the south end of the field.

Ohio Stale ventured into new fields in 1929 when the Bucks went to Pittsburgh to meet the Panther. Toby Uansa broke loose for a touchdown run on the fir t play of the game and Pitt rolled up an 18 to 2 victory, the game being played in a driving rain.

In 1930, the Buckeye won two intersectional games.

They 'lip et Pittsburgh, 16 to 7 in the stadium when \Vesley Fe !er made potent contributions to the Buckeye cau e one week after he had led the .Sca rl et aggregation to a 27-0 triumph over Navy at Balli more.

The Navy series wa concluded la t year when the Buckeyes profited by Middy mistakes to win 20 to O in a contest, which as i the case today, was a Homecoming attraction.

In one interscctional game to elate thi season, Ohio State battled to a careless tie with Pitt ·burgh.

While Ohio State played intersectional football games long before the construction of the Ohio taclium, it was not until the big horseshoe made its appearance along the bank of the Olentangy that the Buckeyes really started an exten ive program of conte t with team from other parts of the country particularly the ea t.

In the pa t 10 years, these games have stimulated football interest here in no uncertain terms, and as supplements to regular \Ve tern Conference engagement , they have added a pleasing spice of variety to the fall gridiron program .

Today, Ohio State entertains a brand new opponent in Pennsylvania. vVhile a Red and Blue team ha never before appeared on a Buckeye football schedule, the very name of Pen:1 is synonomous with cla s and tradition on the gridiron.

Penn was a heaclline.r back in the clay when Princeton poke only to Yale and Yale spoke only lo Harvard.

A Penns)•lvania athlete, Adams, by name and a center, was the first man to crash into the sacred precincts of what was once the "Big Three" and win a place on \Valter Camp' All-America, Adam making the grade in 1891.

Since then Penn has had its full share of All--America heroes, 41 in all. The Quakers rate as the fourth school in America in the matter of ,p lacing athletes on these mythical squads.

Every football fan remembers Thayer, great fullback of 1892, Gilbert, the great encl of 1 94, 1895 and 1896, Kraft and Brooke, peel"less halfbacks of 1894 and Truxton Hare, the g reat guard who made the All-America for four consecutive years from 1897 to 1900.

Then there was Hollenbach, the sparkling halfback of 1908 and Teel Mercer who et the country afire with hi great fullback play in 1910 and 1912.

In modern years Penn has kept pace with the parade de pite the phenomenal growth of the game in other sections of the country.

Allen Thurman, a Columbus boy, made the AllAmerican as a Penn tackle in 1922 while in 1924, 1IcGinley, another tackle from Philadelphia, made the grad;:,.

Penn's last All-American was Paul Scull, who was nominated as halfback on the 1928 team.

Tradition is by no means Penn' chief tock in t rad e.

This year, the Franklin Field aggregation is one of the strongest in the east and when the big team from Philadelphia goes into action today, Columbu ites will have a good idea of just how the best eastern brand of football stacks up with representative middle-western class.

Penn is no strange r to Con [e r ence tactics. In recent yea rs, Red and Blue teams have met Chicago, Illinois

A board walk ha been built over the tracks, so as to give convenicnt acces to the north entrance of the Stadium. ,\fter the games, cabs will be \\'ailing at the cab stand, \\hich has been provided on the University Farm Road ju t outside the north entrance of the Stadium.

It is the hope of the Athletic Department that this arrangement will prove to be not only a convenience, but also a protection in the matter of rates, for those who use taxi cab service to the football games.

The Athletic Department, of the Ohio State University, ha arranged with four Columbus taxi cab companie for an improved service to and from football games at the Stadium.

In return for the privilege of loading and unloading passenger on University property at a point near the north entrance of the Stadium, the · e four companies-the "Co-op/" "Hill's," "Safety," and "Yellow-Checker"-have agreed to adhere to the fo llowing rate between the Stadium and downto\\'11 point , or on haul of a irnilar di tance from the tadium: ZSc per person SOc minimum charge per cab $1.00 maximum charge per cab

The answer is obvious. Certainly Columbus would suffer an irreparable tragedy, almost, 1f the university were not among its valued asset .

They, no doubt, will note quickly many changes around the campus. Iew faces-many of them -new buildings, new activities, all in keeping with the stupendou. prorrre s education ha made at Ohio State University in the intervening year . Columbus today is 38 square miles in size.

Exclusive of the univer ity student population, its population is 290,565. It has 631 industrial plant . It has eight banks with total deposit of $96,000,000. It has 134 office buildings and 1106 acres of public parks.
