The 1934 Season By
BR< > O K S
SMITH
Editor 1 )aily Lariat
BAYLOR RICE W i t h an otherwise dismal season brightened
Coach J i m m y Kitts has brought to W a c o to-
by a sensational 13 to 6 victroy over Ray Morri-
day the most powerful team in the history of
son's Southern Methodist Mustangs, Baylor uni-
the
versity's fighting Bruins will take the field this
which
afternoon hoping to turn the trick that they have
onl}' by a 9 to 9 draw with Louisiana State until
done twice before, defeat kice, and present Texas
last week's upset by Texas Christian, has been
University with a conference championship.
made
Back in 1928 S. M. IT. came to Waco with a fine ball club which was heading for the championship throne, but an inferior Baylor team arose and smote the Ponies d o w n 2 to 0, handing the crown to the Texas Long-horns. Again in 1930 the State University was declared champions when the Bears whipped the leading T. C. U. Frogs 35 to 14. Sports fans and critics are wondering this afternoon therefore whether or not another Baylor squad will c o m e through with an opportune victory and give Jack Chevignv a championship 111 his first year. The Bruin record this season does not indicate that the I'ans m a y look for any such occurance. With the exception ol the Mustang fray last week, the Green and Gold have been very unimpressive while losing six major contests, including games to Texas Tech, Arkansas, Texas Aggies, Texas Christian, Texas, and Centenary. Then it must also be remembered that the team thai heal S. M . U. was an inspired aggregation that was lighting to uphold the tradition, which says that no Pony squad has ever walked oil a W a c o gridiron the victor in a football game. Several Bruins will be playing their last g a m e of their careers against Rice today. Joe fack Pearce, captain, whose superb passing and allaround playing have been instrumental 111 m a n y Baylor victories; Warren "Red" Weathers, subcaptain, hard lighting tackle; Pennie Frisl s plunging fullback w h o is one ol the most consistent and valuable m e n on the squad ; ami Rudy Mall, Z i m m e r m a n , and Price will wind up thencollege careers.

and
conference
Opening the season against Loyola of the South at N e w ( >rleans, the ( Kvls waded through to a 12 to 0 win and the first of a long series of successes. T h e next week the Feathered tribe were hosts to Louisiana State, and were leading Biff Jones' crew 9 to 0 in the fourth quarter and apparently had the g a m e sewed up, when A b e Mickal got lose for a touchdown, which tied up the g a m e as the O w l s had presented the Tigers with an intentional safety and kicked out of danger. From then on until last week Kitt's crew was Hying along on all cyclinders and had moved to sixth place in the national ranking at the time ol its defeat. Left in the dust of the Rice steamroller were Purdue, defeated m Lafayette 14 to 0, Southern Methodist, Arkansas, Creigh'ton, Texas A. & L, 'Texas Aggies, and Texas. Featured in the < Kvls' attack- against Baylor and the conference championship this afternoon will be the touchdown twins. Bill Wallace and John McCauley; Bale, a guard; Mays, tackle; \rthur, center and captain ; and Sylvester, an allconference end. Witt, giant fullback, while not so spectacular as his backfield mates is just as valuable with his great blocking, line plunging, and defensive ability. While Kitts and his ( >wls deserve the great record the) have compiled, at the same time they have been fortunate in not having a m injuries ol the k m d winch have continually hampered the work- of such conference stars as Milliard and Robert Wilson.
