ANOTHER PHASE OF OUR PROGRAM
ONE
the elimination of non-profit sports , the purchase of less expensive equipment and an effort to continue a program of games on the campus.
of the most important phases of the physical education program in our colleges and universi ties today is that which contemplates the physical improvement through recreation of the great mass of students generally. Though this branch of athletics is not by any means new, yet it has onlv b~en s ince the economic depression that it has come to enj oy anywhere neal' its
Such was the case at Florida, and we fire happy to be able to say that today we have one of the most complete and successful intramural programs in the South. Approximately eighty per cent of our students participate in a program of fourteen games, conducted almost wholly by themselves. Coach Rainey Cawthon, Direetor of Intramurals, has surrounded himself with a corps of efficient student managers who, under hi s direction, engineer its operat ion. The chief virtues of intramurals a r e: (1) Relati vely inexpensive, (2) Socializing in its effects, since through game competition all types of students are brought together, (3) Stimulates inter est in games possessing carry-over values - these include t ennis. golf. swimming, handball, etc., (4) Provides continuous healthful entertainment so necessary in college life.
ri ghtful emphasis.
While we have some record of intramurals at t he U. S. Naval Academy, Princeton and one or two other schools as early as 1869, practically speaking, it has only been since the World War that this part of the physical education program has been recognized. Thi s wholesome program embracing a diversified group of games did much to keep the American soldier s in good physical condition, encouraging, at t he same t ime, a happy attitude toward their work. Prosperous years from 1920 to 1929 brought about vast expansions in football and other major sports. the profit from which built magnificent stadia, gymnas ia and field houses. Contests not of an intercollegiate nature were given little attention either by public or student bodies. Fortunately for int ramurals and students generally thnt thi s condition did not continue. With the crash came r eductions in personnel,
Our policy in the future is to continue in our efforts to improve football, basketball and the other major sports. yet we will try and remain mindful that the development and happiness of the great mass of our students can be best accomplished through QUI¡ program of intramural games.
EDGAR CHARLES JONES.

BRIEF REVIEW OF FLORIDA'S SPORTS IN 1933-34 N IVERSITY OF FLOR IDA'S most conspicuous sports achievement of the past year was in basketball, although when the football team won 5, lost 3, and tied 1, for the best season in three yea r s, there was much rejoicing, and praise extended to Coach Dutch Stanley and stall'. Alter winning nine of 15 games on the regular schedule. the vanity basketball team entered the Southeastern championship tournament in Atlanta, eliminated two seeded teams in succession, Kentucky 38-32 and Vanderbil t 24-23, only to lose out to Alabama 41-25 in the final game. Alabama in annexing the title was never called upon to meet a seeded team, whereas the Gaton to stay in the running had to battle two stubborn foes in quick lIuccession, and consequently we re at a disadvantage when Alabama turned up, compar atively fresh, for the all-important title contest. It was a great season's showing Cor Coach Ben Clemons and his boys, The va r sity baseball, boxing, and t r ack teams did not measure up to footba ll and basketball. T he baseball dub won 6, lost 7; the boxers won 2, lost 4; the traeksters won 1, lost 2. I n t he minor sports field, the golfers split even in eight intercollegiate matc hes; the tennis tea m had a fine season, winning 5, losi n~ 2, and the swimmers, like the golfers, }o'RANK S. WRIGHT broke even, winfllng two meets, losing two. The cross counO¡ t f P bl" 't try team failed to gain a victory in two starts. Irec ~ 0 U 1C1 /I Where freshman sport C{)~petition was held, a splendid rerord was made. Coach Ramey Cawthon's frosh football eleven won t he only two games permitted under conference r ules, beat ing Stetson 7-0 and Souther n 30-0. T be "~aby G,aton" in basket~lI won 6, lost 3; in freshman baseball won 7, lost 2; in boxing won 4, l.o~t 2; In tenniS won 3, lost 0, tied 1. There were no freshman swimming, wrestling, or golf competitions.
