From Generation to Generation T he other day. when five-year-old Nancy reached lip over the counter and lisped to the clerk: "A pound of coffee for Mummy, and a lollypop, pleathc, for me!" she had no idea that she was carrying out an old family tradition. Nor had we, until her great-grandmother came in and told us that one of her own earliest childhood memories was a visit to an early A & ]) store. In the course of conversation, this lady said t hat both her daughter and herself, all through the ir married lives, had found A & P a useful ally in the business of home-making. And that her grand-daughter during the early years of her married life would have found it impossible to maintain a standard of healthful living in her home if it had not been for the good food supplied at low prices by A & P. Since she represents the fourth successive generation of A & P shoppers in her family , no wonder Nancy loves to run Oil errands to A & P. From generation to generation, A & P has catered to the food needs of many old American families. We think we've learned to do it a little better through the years, and we'd be glad to extend our service to you.

S uccess crowned his effort in accomplishing the supposedly impossible when his sugar boiler exclaim ed "it c rystalizes ! r" and he became the founder
of a National Industry that has flourished to thi5 day. Louisiana is the Nation', Sugar~Bowl. and it is fitting that this game, played upon ground whe re the Sugar Industry was born, should pay tribute. in its small way, by ado pting such a symbolic name. Cominued on PIIRC Thirtrcn

THE NATIONAL SUGAR BOWL Continued from I'age Elc"e n
Thru vicissitudes of tariff tinkering, crop-pests, wars a nd depressions. this industry, so vital to th e well being of a multitude of Louisianians a nd so necessary to our nation, h as survived, and a~ain flourishes so that waving fields of the g re en cane, just before h arvest time, stretch unbroken for miles and miles.
At the finish of "grind ing". which is just abo ut this season, it was the c ustom upon the old plantations to hold their greatest merriment of the year. So it is further fitting that a game played at this time of the year should in memory of these great festivities couple its name with that of the sugar
industry.

TULANE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA Now One Hundred Years Old, Tulane University comme nced as the Medical College of L ouisiana, and later became the University of Louisiana. In younger days it suffered from meagerness of funds derived from State appropriations; closed entirely during part of the Civil War, but opening thereafter made such headway as to attract the attention of Paul Tulane. In 1884. to accept the bequest of this present donor, Tulane surrendered State rights. adopted its present name, and moved to th e present location in uptown residential Ne w Orleans. opposite spacious and b eautiful Audubon

The proposed plans m eetin g w ith the approval o f a ll those a nswering the call, a permanent organizat ion under the present style was formed with a m embe rship d ivided into two classes; represe nta ti ve and individual. R epresentative membership consisted of those sent to the Associatio n by oth er bodies. the main body being th e member and the individual sent being th eir represen ta ti v e.
The Consti tutio n of the Association provides that no offi cer or m ember should be paid or receive a ny remu neration or fin ancial advan tage because of his m embership ; also that profits, if any, after sufficient surpl us accrued to insure one further annual game, sh ould be d evoted to ch arity or civic proj ects thru recog nized ch a ri table, ed ucational, relig ious or governm ental agen cies. The p lans adopted call ed for sponsoring a m ateur s ports only, with a football game as the major activity; s ub ..eom mittees were forme d to handle other even ts and to encourage o th er clubs, etc., to join in th e gen eral prog ram. Othe r ac ti vities this first year have been th e tennis tournament and th e yachting regatta; the former under auspic es of the Mid-Winter Sports Association, the latter by the Southern Yacht Club in co-ope ra tion with th e general plan. Both of these even ts have b een condud ed prior to the Sugar-Bowl Game. Other events to follow a re th e banquet for the t eams and th e Jackson Day Run, January 8th, 1935, unde r sponsorshi p of the local Y. M. C. A. Plans for the n ext Sports Carnival. to be held from Dec ember 27 th, 1935, until J a n uary 8th, 1936, have been formu lated and if the first year has been even a modest s uccess, it is believed that th e n ext Sugar-Bowl Classic a nd surrou nding sports events wi ll be bigger and b etter. and will increase from year to year until this season in New O rlean s will not o nly be Natio na lly. but Inte rnationally. known a n d attended. C e rtai nl y the results obtained in inaugurati ng the prog ram, in th e c ivic interest a roused. a nd in the National publicity and prominence obtained, has b een very gratifying.
