AIR FORCE NOTES Air Force concluded last season with a 9-4 overall record and finished third in the Mountain West Conference with a 5-3 mark. The season marked the first time since 1989-92 that Air Force has played in a bowl game four straight years. The Falcons defeated Georgia Tech, 14-7, in the Independence Bowl. The victory marks Air Force’s second straight in a bowl which is the first time since 1998-2000 that the team has won back-to-back bowl games.

Head Coach Troy Calhoun is the first coach in school history to win eight or more games and to take his team to a post-season bowl in each of his first four years. Calhoun has an overall record of 34-18 and is 21-11 in MWC games, 13-7 in non-conference games, 19-5 in Falcon Stadium and 2-2 in bowl games.

The Falcons won the Commander-in-Chief ’s Trophy for the first time since 2002 with victories over Army and Navy in 2010. The Falcons also were ranked in the top 25 for the first time since 2003 and posted it’s first win as a ranked team since 2002 with a win over Colorado State.

AIR FORCE ONE OF JUST 12 Air Force is one of just 12 schools nationally that plays in a conference and has won at least eight games and played in a bowl game four straight years. Prior to 2010, Air Force was 9-4 in 2007 and 8-5 in 2008 and 2009 while playing in the Armed Forces Bowl all three years. The Falcons were 9-4 last season and played in the Independence Bowl.

COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF’S TROPHY Air Force defeated both Army (42-22) and Navy (14-6) last season to win the Commander-in-Chief ’s Trophy for the first time since 2002. Last season’s title is the 17th in Air Force history, which is more than any other service academy.

The trophy goes annually to the winning academy with the best record in round-robin competition. The President of the United States presents the trophy to the seniors from the winning team each year at a ceremony at the White House. The 2010 season marks the 39th year of trophy competition. Air Force has a 5127-0 all-time CIC record.

BOWL ATTENDANCE NOTES Air Force sold 11,000 tickets to the 2010 Independence Bowl which is the second most in school history. The Falcons set a record with 12,200 in the 2007 Armed Forces Bowl. Air Force has averaged over 9,000 tickets sold in its last four bowl games.

Air Force played in three straight Armed Forces Bowl games prior to last season and set a record attendance mark each year. Air Force set the first record in 2007 with 40,905, then broke it in 2008 with 41,127 and in 2009 with 41,414. Prior to Air Force’s arrival, the bowl game had hit 40,000 in attendance just once.

PLAYING BEST WHEN IT MATTERS MOST Air Force is 18-8 under head coach Troy Calhoun in games during the second half of the season (last six games), including a 3-3 mark last season. Air Force was 5-1 in 2007 which is the best mark since the 1998 team was 6-0. Prior to Calhoun’s arrival in 2007, the Falcons were 12-24 over the last six games of the season since 2001.

HOME SWEET HOME Air Force tied the school record for most home wins over a four-year period with 19. The Falcons have a 19-5 record at home under head coach Troy Calhoun since 2007. Air Force also won 19 games from 1982-85 (194, .826) and from 1997-00 (19-4, .826). The Falcons enter the 2011 season with a chance to have the best fiveyear mark. The 1997-01 squads posted 23 wins over five years.

ATTENDANCE NOTES Air Force’s average home attendance of 40,093 last season is the best since 2002 when the school averaged 42,713. The team had four straight games with 40,000-plus for the first time since 1998. This season marks the first time 2002 that the Academy has had four crowds of over 40,000 in one season overall.

Air Force had back-to-back sell outs earlier in the season. A season-high crowd of 47,565 attended the Navy game Oct. 2. Air Force hosted 46,692 against BYU Sept. 11. The consecutive sell outs mark just the second in school history and first since 1972 when the Academy hosted Notre Dame (48,671) and Colorado (47,191).

Air Force Notes ACADEMICS AND FOOTBALL The Air Force football team has the second-highest multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) of any team in the Football Bowl Subdivision, according to a report issued by the NCAA. The program's 988 ranks second only to Rutgers, who had a 992, among the 120 FBS football playing schools. Rounding out the top five were Rice (987), Northwestern (986) and Duke (983). The multi-year APR is for the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-89 academic years.

Air Force's number is easily the best within the Mountain West Conference. TCU is second with a 968 while Utah is third at 949. Colorado State is fourth with a 945 followed by BYU (940), New Mexico and UNLV (934), San Diego State (931) and Wyoming (928). The Academy is also the highest ranking service academy, as Navy posted a 973 and Army a 964.

CALHOUN LEADS THE NATION IN COACHES APR Air Force football coach Troy Calhoun led the nation in Academic Progress Rates for Division I head coaches released by the NCAA. Calhoun has a three-year average of 986, posting a 981 in 2006-07, a 989 in 2007-08 and a 987 for 2008-09.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

100 YARDS RUSHING UNDER CALHOUN • Air Force was 5-1 last season and is 21-4 under Troy Calhoun (since 2007) when it has a 100-yard rusher.

• The team’s only losses have come in the 2007 Armed Forces Bowl vs. California, vs. No. 16/14 BYU in 2008, vs. Houston in the 2008 Armed Forces Bowl and at San Diego State last season.

• Air Force has had two or more players top the 100-yard mark in a game three times, the most recent vs.

Houston in the 2009 Armed Forces Bowl (Jared Tew, 173; Asher Clark, 129).

• Asher Clark has seven-career 100-yard games, including three in 2010 (BYU, 121; CSU, 125; SDSU, 116).

DEFENSIVE NOTES FROM 2010 • Air Force finished second in the MWC and nationally in pass defense with a 147.8 norm.

• Air Force had an interception in 11 of 13 games last season.

• Air Force was second in the MWC and 10th nationally in pass efficiency defense with a 107.9 mark.

• The Falcons ranked third in the MWC and 29th nationally in scoring defense with a 21.1 average.

AIR FORCE VS. RANKED TEAMS Air Force played four ranked teams last season. The Falcons were 1-3, beating No. 24 BYU, 35-14, at home and falling at No. 9/7 Oklahoma, 24-27, at No. 4/4 TCU, 7-38, and vs. No. 8/7 Utah, 23-28.

THE NATIONAL RANKINGS The Falcons were ranked in both polls and for consecutive weeks for the first time since 2002. The team’s No. 23 ranking on Oct. 9 was the program’s highest since being ranked as high as 15th in 2002. He was a key player in the development of true freshman tailbacks Warren Norman and Zac Stacy, who ranked 1-2 on the team in rushing in 2009 with Norman producing one of the finest all-purpose campaigns ever by an SEC freshman. He ended the season as the SEC Freshman of the Year and a freshman All-American.

Prior to his time at Vanderbilt, Kitchings coached at Furman from 2004-07 where he was the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator. He helped mentor Larry Hedden, Willis Sudderth and John Rust to allconference recognition. During his tenure at Furman, the Paladins went 10-3 and captured a conference title in 2004, and advanced to the NCAA I-AA national semifinals in 2005.

Kitchings was a standout receiver/return specialist at Furman. As a senior in 1999, Kitchings helped Furman win the first of three conference championships. He ranks among the school's all-time leaders in receptions and returns. As a specialist, he averaged a SoCon record 29.3 yards on 33 kickoff returns, four of which went for touchdowns - also a school record. A consensus all-Southern Conference selection as both a receiver and returner, Kitchings earned All-America honors as a return specialist in 1999 after leading the NCAA I-AA division in return average.

Kitchings was selected by Kansas City in the 2000 NFL Draft, and spent four years on practice squads and rosters of NFL squads. Kitchings completed a health and exercise science degree at Furman in 2000. He also became the youngest inductee into the Furman Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.

A native of Wagener, S.C., Kitchings and his wife, Heather, have three children.

Head Coach Troy Calhoun Sometimes people seem born for a particular job or situation. That has never been the case more than Troy Calhoun being the head football coach at the Air Force Academy.

The Air Force Academy’s purpose is to develop young people of strong character who graduate and serve as outstanding leaders for our country. Air Force student-athletes must complete one of the nation’s most demanding academic curriculums while further embedding the kind of heart and character that are a crucial foundation for service. It’s a purpose Calhoun thoroughly respects and appreciates. While embracing the mission of the Academy, Calhoun has also found a way to build a very competitive football program within one of college football’s strongest conferences.

Calhoun is the only coach in the 100-plus year history of service academy football to lead teams to at least eight wins and a bowl game in each of his first four seasons. He added another significant accomplishment this season, as he became the only coach in Air Force history to win at least eight games four straight years. Calhoun is a semifinalist for the 2010 Paterno National Coach of the Year award for his efforts on and off the field.

His players have also been amazingly successful finishing their academic and leadership responsibilities. The Air Force football team's most recent NCAA APR is an astounding 988 which once again places the Academy amongst the nation's top three in the sport of football. A total of 58 players (from the Academy classes of 2008-12) have started at least one game since Calhoun became head coach. All 36 members of that group from the classes of 2008-09 have graduated from the Academy and are currently serving on active duty in the Air Force. There are 21 players from the classes of 2010, 2011 and 2012 that are on track to graduate with their respective classmates.

Calhoun has also lifted the Falcon football program to unprecedented heights within the Mountain West Conference in his four seasons. Calhoun is 34-18 in four seasons after taking over a program that had posted three straight losing seasons before his arrival. They have posted wins at Notre Dame and Utah and led the Falcons to four straight bowl games for the first time since becoming a member of the MWC. He has also led the Falcons to the school’s first Commander-in-Chief ’s Trophy title since 2002 with victories this season over Army and Navy.

In Mountain West Conference play, Calhoun is 21-11, the most MWC wins in school history in a fouryear span. The 21 wins is the most for Air Force over four years in its MWC history and his conference winning percentage (.656) is the fourth best in MWC history.

Air Force, coming off a three straight losing seasons, finished the 2007 season 9-4 overall and placed second in the Mountain West Conference with a 6-2 mark in Calhoun’s first year. The Falcons earned their first bowl bid in five seasons, advancing to the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas.

The five-game turnaround from the previous season, was the largest in the nation by a first-year head coach and tied as the third-largest overall in the nation. The five-game turnaround is the best in school history since the 1958 team had a school-record turnaround of six games.

Calhoun was named the conference’s coach of the year for his efforts. In addition, he was named coach of the year in Region 5 by the American Football Coaches Association and was one of eight finalists for national coach of the year honors. Calhoun followed with back-to-back 8-5 overall records and fourth place conference finishes with 5-3 marks in 2008 and 2009. The team earned bids to the Armed Forces Bowl each season and posted the school’s first bowl victory since 2000 with a 47-20 win over Houston this season.

This season the Falcons posted a 9-4 overall record and recorded their fourth straight top four conference finish with a 5-3 mark. The Falcons were nationally ranked for the first time since 2003 and posted a victory as a ranked team for the first time since 2002.

Calhoun brought a wealth of experience and impressive resume at the collegiate and professional levels that is flooded with success at every stop to the Academy. Calhoun came to the Academy after serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Houston Texans in 2006. The Texans were one of only two NFL teams to triple their number of wins from the previous year.

Calhoun became a well-rounded NFL coach, working as a defensive assistant, special teams assistant and offensive assistant with the Denver Broncos from 2003-05. He began his NFL coaching career by serving as the defensive assistant under defensive coordinator Larry Coyer in 2003.

Prior to the NFL, Calhoun was an offensive coordinator for six seasons on the collegiate level. He began his coaching career at Air Force, where he worked as a graduate assistant from 1989-90. He started at quarterback for the Academy in 1986 and was one of only two freshmen to letter for the 1985 team that finished fifth in the final polls with a 12-1 record that included wins over national powers Notre Dame and Texas.

Calhoun served his country from 1989-95 as an active duty officer in the Air Force. He was the Falcons' recruiting coordinator and the junior varsity offensive coordinator in 1993-94.

He moved to Ohio University in 1995 where he served as the quarterbacks coach for two seasons. Calhoun was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1997. Calhoun moved to Wake Forest in 2001 and remained there prior to his stint with the Broncos.

Groomed on the basics of integrity and passion, Calhoun is a native of Roseburg, Ore., and was raised in a home where both kids graduated from the Air Force Academy and were varsity letterwinners on nationally-ranked teams. Calhoun’s younger sister, Callie, is a 1991 Academy graduate and four-year letterwinner in track and cross country. Calhoun finished at the Academy on the superintendent's list and graduated with over a 3.0 grade point average and a military performance average of better than 3.0. He and his wife, Amanda, live in Colorado Springs and have two children, Tyler (eight) and Amelia (six).

Defensive Line

Coordinator / OL Clay Hendrix is in his fifth season at the Academy as the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Hendrix came to Air Force after completing 19 seasons at NCAA I-AA Furman as the offensive line coach, including the last five as assistant head coach. Since joining the staff in 1988, he played a central role in Furman's success as his offensive lines helped the Paladins post a 147-73-1 record, win six Southern Conference titles and claim the 1988 NCAA I-AA national crown.

He and his wife, the former LeeAnn Hedgpeth of Taylors, S.C., have two sons, Clayton Callaway, and William McDaniel.

A native of Highland Springs, Va., Burton and his wife, Andrea, have four children, Ronald, Ryan, Roya and Reid.

Wallerstedt earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from K-State in 1988 and added a master’s in athletic administration from Fort Hays State in 1995. He and his wife, Josie, have a nine-year-old son, Cal.

Charlton Warren is in his seventh season overall, and second as assistant head coach/codefensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator. Warren was the secondary coach and recruiting coordinator prior to his present position.

Warren is a 1999 graduate of the Academy where he earned his bachelor's degree in human factors engineering. He was also a three-year football letterman as a defensive back.

Co-Offensive Coordinator / QBs

Ron Burton is in his ninth season as defensive line coach at the Academy.

Prior to coming to the Academy, Burton was the defensive line coach at Grand Valley State and helped the school to the NCAA Division II national championship in 2002, the first in school history. GVSU was a perfect 14-0 in Burton's first season at the school.

Prior to his stint at GVSU, Burton was the linebackers coach at Indiana for five seasons (1997-01) where he was responsible for the development of two Butkus Award nominees, Justin Smith and Jabar Robinson.

Matt Wallerstedt enters his second season as associate head coach/defensive coordinator at the Academy. This season marks his fourth overall, as he was assistant head coach/linebackers coach his first two years.

Wallerstedt came to the Academy from Kansas State, where he was a former All-American linebacker. He coached inside linebackers in 2006-07 and served as the Wildcats’ recruiting coordinator during the 2006 season and coordinated K-State’s special teams units in 2007.

He helped the Wildcats to the 2006 Texas Bowl while there.

Blane Morgan

Steve Senn begins his seventh season with Air Force football overall and third as the executive assistant. Senn previously served as the junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant as an officer in the Air Force. Senn retired from active duty last spring.

Senn is a 1990 graduate of the Academy where he earned his bachelor's degree in social sciences. While at the Academy, Senn lettered three years in football as a wide receiver and helped the Falcons to a pair of bowl games.

Senn attended Cibola High School in Albuquerque, N.M., where he graduated in 1985 and was a first-team all-state quarterback and free safety. Senn and his wife, Sophie, who is a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force and is the chief of the Spanish/Portuguese division in the foreign language department at the Academy, have two children, Arran and Eric.

Lt. Col. Darryl Sumrall JV Head Coach Lt. Col. Darryl Sumrall is in his third season on the Air Force Academy and as the junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant.

A 1989 Academy graduate and biology major, Sumrall was a three-year letterman as a defensive lineman. Sumrall played on the same defensive line as All-American Chad Hennings and all-conference nose guard John Steed.

Blane Morgan is in his 10th season overall and fourth as cooffensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the Academy.

Prior to his current position, Morgan was wide receivers coach for two years and a junior varsity assistant before that.

Morgan is a 1999 graduate of the Academy, where he became the winningest starting quarterback in school history. Football has been a family affair for the Morgans, as Blane's older brother, Beau, also played football at Trinity Christian Academy and at Air Force. Blane followed Beau as the starting quarterback at both schools.

Morgan and his wife, Mandy, live in Colorado Springs.

Ben Miller Tight Ends/Specialists Ben Miller is in his fifth season as tight ends coach at the Academy and fourth year year coaching the specialists (punters, kickers and snappers).

A 2002 Academy graduate, Miller spent the 2006 season as the offensive graduate assistant at the University of Illinois.

Miller and his wife, the former Meghan Carney, were married in January 2008. The couple has a daughter, Quinn, who was born this fall.

Matt Weikert Outside Linebackers Matt Weikert is in his fifth year as outside linebackers coach at Air Force.

Weikert served as Wake Forest's operations and video assistant in 2006 in his second stint at the school. He spent the 2005 season as the outside linebackers coach at TennesseeChattanooga.

Weikert is a native of Covington, Ohio, where he attended Covington High School. While enrolled at Covington, he was a member of the National Honor Society and was a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams.

Sumrall and his wife, Daphne, have two sons, Cody and Joshua and reside in Peyton, Colo.

Originally from Atlanta, Ga., Warren and his wife, Jocelyn, have two children, Jayree and Teya.

Matt McGettigan is in his fifth season as the strength and conditioning coach for the Falcon football team.

Mike Thiessen is in his fifth season overall as the wide receivers coach at Air Force. This season will mark his second as the co-offensive coordinator.

Mike Thiessen is in his fourth season as the wide receivers coach and second as offensive coordinator at Air Force.

A two-sport star during his collegiate career at Air Force, Thiessen was an All-American baseball player as a centerfielder in the spring of 2000 and was the Mountain West Conference offensive player of the year in the fall of 2000. A two-year starter at quarterback, Thiessen led the team in rushing and was among the conference leaders in rushing yards and touchdowns in 2000.

Thiessen and his wife, the former Kristen McClellan of Jefferson City, Mo., were married in 2009.

McGettigan joined the Iowa State staff in 1996 with coach Dan McCarney. He spent 11 years with the Cyclones before coming to Air Force in the summer of 2007.

A native of Darlington, Wis., McGettigan is married to the former Darla Hook of Charles City, Iowa. They have two children, Mariah and Colin.

Des Kitchings Running Backs/Asst.

Brad White Defensive Assistant Brad White enters his second season as inside linebackers coach at the Air Force Academy.

White came to the Academy after spending the 2009 season as safeties coach at Murray State. Prior to his stint at Murray State, White spent two seasons as a defensive graduate assistant at Wake Forest.

While with the Deacons, White coached the cornerbacks and assisted the recruiting coordinator with all correspondence with recruits.

Recruiting Coord.

Desmond "Des" Kitchings joins the Air Force coaching staff this season as running game coordinator/running backs coach for the Falcons.

Kitchings comes to the Academy from Vanderbilt, where he served as running backs coach from 200810 and offensive coordinator in 2010. Kitchings was also the program's running game coordinator and co-special teams coordinator while on the Commodore's staff.

A native of Wagener, S.C., Kitchings and his wife, Heather, have three children.

He is married to the former Kate Holden.

Maj. Tony Sampson JV / Varsity Asst.

Maj. Tony Sampson enters his fourth season as an assistant for the junior varsity and varsity for the Air Force football staff.

Sampson lettered three years in football and four years in track at the Academy. He was a twoyear starter at cornerback for the Falcons and helped the 1997 team to the Las Vegas Bowl and the 1998 team to the O’ahu Bowl.

Sampson and his wife, Eboni, have two children, Isaiah (10) and Elijah (6).

Capt. John Rudzinski Defensive Assistant Capt. John Rudzinski is in his second season as a defensive assistant at the Air Force Academy.

Rudzinski comes back to the Academy from Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., where he served as a maintenance operations officer from 2006-10, responsible for developing long range strategies to sustain fleet health and effective utilization of 56 assigned C17s.

Post-Spring Outlook Air Force has had an outstanding four-year run with head coach Troy Calhoun at the helm. The Falcons have won at least eight games and played in a post-season bowl game four straight years for the first time in school history.

The last two seasons Air Force finished with very notable bowl victories: in 2009 in the Armed Forces Bowl with a 47-20 victory over No. 25 Houston, and in the 2010 Independence Bowl with a 14-7 victory over Georgia Tech. The 2010 Air Force team captured their record 17th Commander-in-Chief’s trophy championship with victories over service academy rivals Army and Navy.

The 2011 Falcons could also be an interesting team to follow. The chief challenges for Air Force to sustain this level of play will include: replacing nearly 80 games started between outside linebacker Andre Morris, Jr. and All-American defensive back and return specialist Reggie Rembert; filling the void for fullback Jared Tew, who rushed for 1,905 career yards; and finding three starters from amongst their tight end and offensive line spots which paved the way for the nation’s No. 2 rushing attack in 2010.

Air Force plays a schedule that includes hosting three bowl winners (TCU, San Diego State and service academy rival Army) and a tough October. The Falcons play five times in October with road games at Navy, Notre Dame, Boise State and New Mexico.

Offensively, Air Force graduated a considerable group of playmakers from their 2010 squad such as Tew, receivers Kyle Halderman and Kevin Fogler, backup fullback Nathan Walker and tight end Chaz Demerath. They will also miss the offensive line play of Chase Darden, Alex Arndt and Tyler Schonsheck.

Quarterbacks Tim Jefferson and Connor Dietz have started a combined 34 games the past three years. Jefferson has been a steady hand for the Falcons. Although Air Force has been a team that relies on their NFL-style zone running game, a key reason they were 9-4 in 2010 was Jefferson leading a team that finished 22nd nationally in passing efficiency. Jefferson hit 82-159 for 1,459 yards and 10 touchdowns. He’s also the only quarterback in school history to lead his team to three straight bowl games.

The running game will be anchored by senior Asher Clark, who became the 13th player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards with 1,031 in 2010. Clark was a second-team all-conference selection and finished third in the league in rushing with a 79.3 per-game average. Clark has rushed for 2,484 career yards which ranks sixth in school history. The backup roles will be handled by juniors Darius Jones and Cody Getz.

The offensive line will be led by returning starters A.J. Wallerstein (guard), Jason Kons Air Force Football

(tackle) and Michael Hester (center). The group helped the Falcons win their 13th consecutive conference rushing title and finish second nationally with a 306.5 per-game average. Guards Jordan Eason and Jeff Benson, along with tackle Kevin Whitt could also earn starting spots.

The fullback position will continue to be battled for in the fall. Juniors Wesley Cobb and Mike DeWitt ended spring drills atop the depth chart and will be the favorites to win the job in the fall.

Cobb rushed for just 13 yards on five carries after moving to the position midway through the season. DeWitt returns after missing last year due to injury.

Seniors Jonathan Warzeka and Zack Kauth will lead the receiving corps in 2011. Warzeka led the team in receiving in 2010 with 18 catches for 406 yards and three touchdowns. Kauth had 16 catches for 274 yards and a team-best four receiving touchdowns. Warzeka has also boosted the Falcons’ kickoff return game. He earned mid-season All-American honors and led the conference in kickoff returns with a 28.7 average. He ranked 11th nationally in kickoff return and his career average of 27.9 is tops in school history.

Juniors Brandon Hirneise and Mikel Hunter will also see prominent playing time at receiver.

Hunter had five catches for 106 yards and rushed for 168 yards on 12 carries. The tight end position could be a shared role between seniors Josh Freeman and Daniel Picket and junior Austin Briehl.

Freeman was tops among the trio with four catches for 122 yards last season.

Defensively, Air Force returns eight starters from a defense that ranked among the MWC’s top four in scoring (third, 21.1), passing (second, 147.8) and total defense (fourth, 349.3). Air Force will use both 3-4 and 4-3 configurations along with a variety of zone and man coverages.

The defense features a solid group of inside linebackers with seniors Brady Amack, Jordan Waiwaiole and Ken Lamendola. Waiwaiole led the Falcons with 96 tackles last season while Amack was third on the team with 82 stops. The pair tied for the team lead with three double-figure tackle games. Lamendola returns after missing all of last season and half of 2009 with multiple injuries. As a sophomore in 2008, Lamendola recorded just the sixth 100-tackle season by a sophomore in school history with 118 stops to lead the team and rank third in the conference. Junior Austin Niklas will also battle for playing time.

The defensive line will certainly miss the energized contributions of seniors Rich Ricketts, a second-team all-conference performer and the defensive most valuable player in the Independence Bowl, and Bradley Connor. Ricketts recorded 71 total tackles and tied for the team lead in tackles for loss with 10 while leading the team in sacks with 2.5. Senior nose guard Ryan Gardner, along with defensive ends Zach Payne, Harry Kehs and Ben Kopacka give Air Force a rather diminutive, but capable group. Gardner recorded 29 tackles last year, while Payne had 55 total tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss. Kopacka missed all of last season due to injury, but returned in the spring.

The secondary returns three starters in senior safety Jon Davis and cornerback Anthony Wright, Jr., along with sophomore safety Anthony Wooding, Jr. Davis was second on the team in tackles with 93 and tied for the team lead in interceptions with three. Wright, Jr. is among the conference and school leaders in career interceptions with 10 and had 50 tackles and two interceptions in 2010.

Junior Brian Lindsay, who started the first six games last season before an injury sidelined him, returns and will be a significant contributor and figures to start at nickel back. Seniors Josh Hall and P.J. Adeji-Paul, along with sophomore Chris Miller will all battle for the other starting cornerback position. All three saw significant action in 2010.

Air Force has ranked among the national leaders in net punting the last two years, but must replace last year’s starter Keil Bartholomew.

Sophomore David Baska seems to have the lead heading into fall drills. The team doesn’t have a player that has attempted a punt in a varsity game on its roster. The kicking game will be battled for between senior Erik Soderberg, junior Parker Herrington and sophomore Zach Hoffman.

Soderberg was a second-team all-conference selection in 2009 and hit five of 10 field goals last season. The punt return duties will be shared between seniors Anthony Wright and Jon Davis while junior Cody Getz figures to help the kickoff return game.

Senior Patrick Hennessey returns as a starter at outside linebacker. Hennessey had 60 total tackles and tied for the team lead in tackles for loss with 10. Junior Alex Means and sophomore Jamil Cooks will likely battle it out for the other starting position. Means had 22 tackles last season while Cooks had 13 playing mostly on special teams.

Air Force National Letter of Intent (NLI) signing day release Due to the Academy appointment process, names of recruited student-athletes will not be released until they arrive on campus this summer. Air Force coaches and administrators are not allowed to comment about recruits due to the Privacy Act, therefore head football coach Troy Calhoun is not available to discuss any speci ics about recruits.

Many high school student-athletes will participate in signing days and appear to sign a National Letter of Intent (NLI) with the Air Force Academy, but they are actually signing a Certi icate of Intent which is a non-binding agreement that signi ies an athlete's commitment to follow through with the appointment process and allows them to participate in signing day for publicity purposes. The Academy is a non-scholarship institution and doesn't use the National Letter of Intent, as most civilian schools do. ##
