SAVAGES TIE IN THE AZTEC BOWL, 24-24 y M. Shane Baxley ports Editor MEXICO CITY -In its 25th year, the Tazon Azteca, or Aztec Bowl was played o a tie for the first time. The Aztec Bowl was played here in the Estadio de lymprad, the site of the 1968 Olympics. In 1989, the Savages were first invited to play in the Aztec Bowl after an 8-2 eason, and defeated the Mexican All-Stars, 22-10. Southeastern finished the 1994 season with an 8-2 record, tying Northeastern and Langston for the klahoma Intercollegiate Conference Championship. At halftime, the Savages left the playing field with 17-0 advantage. The first scoring opportunity came for Southeastern when Phil Cobb kicked a field goal to give the Savages an early 3-0 start. . During Mexico's possession, the Savages intercepted a pass on Mexico's own 24 yard line. Jakarta Washington carried the ball19 yards, and Pete Spratt was hit with a five yard from quarterback Jeff Moser for the first touchdown of the game. Cobb's PAT was good, and the Savages were ahead, 10-0. In the second quarter, Phil Cobb faked a field goal and completed a six-yard pass to Linn Marshall for a touchdown. Cobb's PAT was good, and at the half, the Savages were up, 17-0. With 6:51 left in the half, the All-Stars narrow the gap, 17-7, with a touchdown. The PAT was good. Four minutes later, Mexico intercepted a pass, running it 55-yards for touchdown. The PAT was good, and the Savages had a three-point lead, 1 7-14. Cobb's missed field goal late in the half turned the ball over to the All-Stars, and they kicked a field goal to tie the game, 17-17, with only :021eft in the third quarter. In the final quarter, Mexico broke the lie with a lateral pass, running it 45 yards for their touchdown of the game. In the series that the Savages engineered to pulled ahead, punter Kyle Harris faked a punt, resulting in a seven-yard run touchdown by Earnest Hunter.
