2018 Syracuse Spring Football Prospectus

Syracuse will face three teams in 2018 that are coached by former Orange assistants. They are: Western Michigan (Tim Lester), Connecticut (Randy Edsall) and Boston College (Steve Addazio). Edsall also played at Syracuse. Of the 130 FBS football programs, nine are coached by former Orange players or coaches, the most of any of any school in the country (total includes institution’s current head coach). Bowling Green is second with eight.

21

Games out of 24 missed the last two seasons by safety-turned-receiver Antwan Cordy. Cordy suffered a season-ending forearm injury during Week 2 of the 2016 season against Louisville. He returned for the 2017 opener versus Central Connecticut State, but injured his lower leg in the first quarter and missed the rest of the year. He is back for his senior season in 2018.

93.8

Percentage of Syracuse’s rushing output returning for 2018. The Orange bring back seven of their top eight ground-gainers, including leading rusher Eric Dungey (595 yards) and primary running backs Dontae Strickland (482) and Moe Neal (488). Receiver Ervin Philips and quarterback Zack Mahoney are the only two from last year’s rushing list not returning.

134

Career punts for Sterling Hofrichter, only seven of which have gone into the end zone for touchbacks. He owns a career touchback percentage of 5.2. Hofrichter was third in the ACC in that category (7.0, 4-57) last season behind Georgia Tech’s Pressley Harvin III (2.0) and Louisville’s Mason King (4.5).

1,805

Career kickoff return yards for junior Sean Riley, third-most in program history and tops among active ACC players. Riley was third in the conference in kickoff return average (24.5 ypr) last season. Qadry Ismail (1989-92) holds the Orange record with 2,290 career kickoff return yards.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange (4-3, 2-1 ACC) never trailed and stunned No. 2 Clemson (6-1, 4-1 ACC) by the score of 27-24 at the Carrier Dome. It was Syracuse’s first win over against a top-five opponent since 2001, and the Tigers represented the highest-ranked Syracuse victim since the Orange took down No. 1 Nebraska in 1984. Quarterback Eric Dungey threw three touchdowns and kicker Cole Murphy hit a pair of field goals, including the go-ahead score with 9:41 to play. The Orange defense held the Tigers to 113 yards rushing, well below their season average of 237.3, and recorded a season-high four sacks. The loss ended Clemson’s 11-game winning streak.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Syracuse (4-4, 2-2 ACC) outscored No. 8 Miami (6-0, 4-0 ACC) in the second half 16-14, but couldn’t overcome four first-half turnovers and fell to the Hurricanes 27-19 at Hard Rock Stadium. Kicker Cole Murphy tied his career high with four field goals, including a 53-yarder with 5:23 left that trimmed the Miami lead to 20-19. The Hurricanes answered with a 33-yard Travis Homer touchdown run, and the Miami defense held on Syracuse’s final possession to clinch a sixth straight win in the series. Running back Dontae Strickland (105 yards) and quarterback Eric Dungey (100 yards) recorded 100-yard rushing games for the Orange.
