Photography is so central to our everyday that as an activity it seems almost natural. The photograph however is a paradox. An uncountable number of images are created at any given moment, from selfies to surveillance, artwork to artless visual documents. While the quantity of images being produced can be considered now like a constant stream, the photograph itself is still, and it is this stillness that offers the opportunity to pause and reflect on our own current, collective moment. The work created by the photographers graduating this year, carries a wealth of these opportunities. In an images saturated society, the projects are still unique and made with ambition and integrity. I encourage you now to take your time, study the images, and appreciate the thought, skill, and insights they contain. Enjoy.

Growing up with the Mountains
A documentation of coming to terms with the surgical experience. The encounters and her current state; the works explore a series of strong, distorted images that depict how she felt after the surgery. Photographing her surroundings and nature are imagined settings that have rescued her when she felt vulnerable.

A Melancholy Note is a lyrical documentary project that resembles the exploration of the self. Using film photography as a form of therapy, to encounter with past and current dispirited experiences; openly willing to learn to accept them.

This project is a collection of Sophie’s photographs that she has captured over the last year whilst shadowing the world’s most followed beauty influencer, Abby Roberts and developing her skills as a portrait, fashion, music and documentary photographer.

Act Natural
Act Natural is a commercial Project that looks at how one will pose when instructed to act natural in front of the camera. This project aims to show that when people are not given instructions on how to pose, they choose to pose how they have seen people pose in magazines and advertisements. It shows how people think they should pose when they are asked to act natural.

PLAN2
PLAN2, is a project created in order to showcase sustainable fashion. The basis of this project surrounds itself within Second-hand fashion, an area under photographed and talked about. The work created has been captured in a way that allows second-hand fashion to be seen as equal to fast fashion, as fast fashion isn’t the only way to shop.

‘Xover’ is a project produced by Finlay, that looks at how different gazes react to the ‘performed body’. The photographs explore and convey how social constructs of these gazes, control what we think and feel, of other bodies. Using the camera to exploit her body, Finlay forces images of herself to disconnect from societal norms.

Seeking Out Euphoria
‘Seeking out Euphoria’ documents Clayton Heeley’s Gender Transition from Female to Male. Using the camera as a tool for documentation and performance, Heeley visually communicates emotions experienced in relation to his Transition whilst also using photography as a platform for education on Transgenderism, and to challenge the medical gaze.

They say a picture paints a thousand words, but it can also tempt the appetites of its viewers. This practice is tailored towards the food industry, the work created from self directed briefs has opened up a variety of different avenues ranging from savoury to sweet foods.

Mindset
Oblique presentations of which suggest signs of anxiety, focusing on capturing the impulse triggers that individuals make when talking about their traumatic experiences. Deceptions of gestures are shown in order to trigger subsequent interpretation by a viewer who might share similar feelings. This work aims to promote mental well-being.

Fifty-Six Years With Tony
Her grandfather passed away in June. The loss was sudden and very unexpected. This project explores the interactions shared between Tess and her grandmother since her grandfather’s death. Without her husband, Ruth’s identity has evolved drastically as she is now aware of her need to become more independent. The work illustrates this development from a companionship within a hectic, family dynamic to a more solitary existence as a widow.

This work focuses on family, memory and representation. The theme that Saskia has chosen to pursue is the contrast between capturing a special moment at an event or just in life, in a documentary style and the more posed and constructed scenario and idealised portraits.

Where We Left Off
This work explores the relationship between two siblings, specifically the disruption it endured and the rebuild it then subsequently went through. A change occurred for one sibling when they expressed they were transgender, which of course was a huge shift on the family dynamic, especially for the brother and sister.

This is a sneak peek of my photobook showing the absence of home and finding it through a comparison of the place I came from and the place the photographer is in. Starting from an empty room and moving to a place that seems foreign and at times feels isolated.

‘Still on my mind. A part of me’ explores Nikita Merchant’s long-term mental health’s experience and a journey to befriend her mind. This was explored through symbolic images suggesting, What if scars and traumas were worn with pride instead of carrying them with shame? What about embracing the inner child to allow growth and acceptance?

This work is a series of images presenting an authored narrative of motherhood. Aiming to form an understanding of the experience a first-time mother encounters by exploring emotions and isolating pressures, when the reality of another life, solely dependent on her, shifts her main focus from herself to the baby.

II
II is an exploration of the grief and guilt experienced after the loss of her twin sister, their correlation as twins and the life they shared but no longer do, made as an attempt to understand her sister’s reasons for leaving. Helene’s revisiting beloved childhood memories, while simultaneously confronting the personal trauma and learning to let go.

Eden
From an imaginary place to a domestic setting. Eden was an enchanted garden, connected to Iona’s home of fifteen years. A place where Iona has spent the majority of her life growing up and holds the past memories of her childhood dreams. Eden explores her newly established independence since she has enetered her twenties and the realisation of only having her own company to depend on, since losing her imaginary friends.

‘Forgotten Places’ documents Korin’s interactions with the city and unconventional observations of the places he discovers through this exploration. These images represent both his reserved and intimate perspectives of the city, often showcasing the beauty which can be found in a place uncommonly observed this way.

This practice explores commercial fashion, expressing diversity and individuality through clothing, using technical skills within the studio and professional standard equipment as well as working collaboratively in a professional context. Being able to combine a passion with the project and see ideas come to life was very rewarding.

My body is not my body
My body is not my body is an exploration of sexual harassment and how 97% of women have experienced it in their lifetime. It is about reclaiming my body from men who think it’s theirs to touch and by using self portraiture I am able to take back control and consent to putting my body on screen. This project is extremely personal and allows me to use phototherapy to come to terms with my own struggles.

Working collaboratively with other women focusing on the beauty and fashion industry widely showcased through media, this work is informed by advertising in magazines and how women are seen in imagery, looking in-depth into female and male gaze and how it is embodied.

Particularly it showcases the visual differences between buildings during the industrial revolution and industry buildings in the modern day. Displayed in black and white, they capture the essence of what is new, and what is old.

Conforming to commercial photographic conventions of the popular cosmetics brand, Morphe, Laura focusses on the ‘Morphe 2’ collaborative campaign with Charli and Dixie D’Amelio. Collaborating with aspiring makeup artists, Laura aims to showcase the campaign’s message of a clean, natural aesthetic to a younger demographic Morphe targets.

What are family archives? Are they just photos that sit in the cupboard or are they special memories? This project explores family albums and experiments with different ways of bringing memories back to life. Some images are exact recreations of the originals whereas others are created in an indirect way.
