The Aztec Client Finding inspiration from cultures and traditions is what inspires my work and motivates me. For this project, The Aztec Client it was the artefacts of the Aztec period that started off my work. I was interested not only in the look of the objects but the people who would have owned them. I had decided to create 3 collections for 3 different Aztec people; a priest, a slave, and an older person in the community. Each has a huge contrast. The Aztec priest was powerful and extremely important in the community, his wealth and position would have had to be reflected within the clothing he would have worn. This collection is all about heavy embellishment, beading, metallic, and technical knit. I have to be the best craftswoman possible to fit the role as a maker for the priest. The Aztec slave client is a complete contrast; themes explored were the ideas of master and slave, being bound down through the use of chains, and using uncomfortable materials. Left over yarns were used, as the slave wouldn’t have been important enough to have the luxury yarns the priest would. The final client is an Aztec elder person. They were celebrated in the community and looked up to; they didn’t have the responsibilities of the priest but were still important. I had looked into macramÊ and experimented with different techniques that could have been used as embellishment or accessories to help celebrate them. This project has allowed me to delve into Aztec history and to really understand the different types of people through my craft. I enjoy changing my skill set to fit the specific client; this has created a huge contrast in my work, and has technically allowed my knitting to develop.
