BIODEGRATION
Over time, mankind has become disconnected with the eco-balance of our planet and has moved away from the use of natural products. In order to sustain our planet, we must become more eco-friendly by reducing waste products and recycling. Alongside re-cycling the process of biodegration is key in achieving the sustainability of mankind. In relation to fashion and textiles man has always researched and explored the resources available to them in order to improve and develop their clothing. A real milestone was reached in the 1950’s with intruduction of hi-technology biodegradable materials such as plant and animal matter and other substances originating from living organisms.
Technology being used in conjunction with biodegration which can repair itself overnight, without necessarily causing an in-balance in the eco-system, has been provided by Shamees Aden’s Shoe protocell which is 3D printed from biological material meaning the shoe can not only be fitted to the exact size of the user’s foot, but can repair itself overnight.
By cultivating harmless bacteria that bond active enzymes and cellulose fibres into a textile like material, researchers developed a plant-based membrane without using any man-made derivatives. Lee fashions the material into prototype garments intended to initiate sustainable clothing designs that would be eco-friendly at every stage of their production.
In the 2008,Summer Collection of Maison Martin Margieta, exhibited handcrafted garments created from clothing fabric and existing objects that have been re-cycled, such as soccer balls, umbrellas and rubber bands. So many garments and household textiles have not only been created from cultivated bacteria, but also from everyday objects, such as those previously mentioned and in addition pins, needles, tyres and mirrors, the list could be endless.
jacque fresco the venus project At some time hopefully in the not too distant future, biotechnology is going to give the designers the biggest set of complex new materials and tools they have ever had the opportunity to work with, and thus create the generation of a minimum level of waste, or simply the ability to create clothing that up to now has been a mere fragment of the imagination.
