My Statement

I am a Textile designer/maker specialised in applied drawing and print, my influences have developed from previous project of natural dyeing and experimentation of how dyes can be applied to cloth. In this body of work I have been exploring the concept of celebrating stains as oppose to dismissing them. A collection that has been influenced by water markings which I have carried through in two directions. The first being simplistic designs that have been created by joining the drops of water on a page together with the implement of a pencil and pen – marks created are distinguished by the water. The samples start white on white with the designs devore printed or flocked with the dyes applied after and processed using different states of water. Experimenting with boiling, steaming, freezing, soaking and rain. The second direction has been to transform these stains and water markings in to a digital trend based collection. Working closely to Indigo Autumn/Winter 2014/15 ‘Obscure Florals’. The trend expresses bold eye-catching florals with saturated colours that are overlaid, blurred or masked and have an impressionistic feel. The core theme is a process driven approach with inspiration from natural marks. By creating innovative ways in which to process materials and translate between the two areas of physically dyeing and digitally I have turned uninteresting dismissed stains in to creative designs that can be used for both fashion and interiors.
