African Aesthetic This collection was created on a base of African aesthetics. The reason behind this concept is I believe that it is not only a fashionable topic but it is also historical and has meaning behind it, I will be further investigating this in future projects. In order to portray a celebration of African design, many things had to be taken into account. In order to produce this imagery effect, the culture and ethnicity was deeply considered; as without this the sincerity wouldn’t be recognised. The fabrics were created using an Arm Loom which is powered through Scot Weave. This allows my visual references to empower the woven designs in order to create a detailed and exotic ambience. As a part of the culture, both Henna ink and indigo dye were used to draw patterns on the warp. Therefore within the woven pattern itself a distorted visual was created in the background. The henna and indigo play a huge pattern in the African culture, as well as the colours. The colour palette was designated due to the aesthetics of the culture; blues, greens, reds and white. In order to make ‘African Aesthetic’ more bespoke and rich, the yellow tones were improved to gold. The question behind the uncreated project was; ‘Will the use of African Aesthetics be a celebration, or exploitation?’ You can decide for yourself, but to me, the designer, this is a celebration of African culture and how its representation and gratitude should be noticed greater.
