Statement As a final year student on the Textiles with Surface design course, i have been trying to create work which has a strong focus on the research side. To do this i chose a subject which hasn’t necessarily been explored within textiles before, gentrification. However this has meant that i could tie in interests i have outside of university life, such as my interest in politics. I think that this has meant that this particular project has allowed me to focus more on my reasoning behind my work rather than simply rushing into the making side which i have done in the past. The work i have created has derived from looking into the way in which people try and present themself to a community through the use of their windows and the idea that one may try and hide their identity through carefully placed curtains and accessories. This idea started as a result of thinking about why an area may be gentrified and made to look more middle class. With all of this in mind i have had to carefully look into my material and colour choices. I chose my materials by looking into what traduitional curtains are made out of, usually rather heavy material with a plain or natural pattern, and neutral tones. I them went in to explore how the materials could be renovated or ‘gentrified’ in their own way. I did this through the use of embroidery and a range of techniques. I also looked into changing the colours to brighten them up.
