{ Decaying Honesty }
{ Decaying Honesty } ‘Decaying Honesty’ is a project based on the delicate lifecycle of lunaria annua, otherwise known as honesty plants, due to the transparency of their moon shaped seed heads. The biennial plant sows one year and blooms the next, creating a range of colours, textures and shapes through these changes. ‘Decaying Honesty’ pulls out the collection of delicate colours and fragile forms, pushing them to the extreme to emphasise the lesser details. The differing hand dyed colours and manipulated textures worn as a body adornment allow the changing lifecycle to reflect on the breakdown and growth that occurs throughout life. It plays on the idea that the decaying stage can be just as, if not more, beautiful than when at full bloom, encouraging you to take a closer look at the usually overlooked and hidden details to gain a new perspective.

I am currently in my final year studying Textiles with Surface Design at the University of Huddersfield. I specialise in embroidered textiles as I enjoy working with 3D forms and have an eye for detail. I am particularly interested in creating one-off, unique designs but also aim to gain experience in many different areas of design in order to broaden my textile knowledge and skills as much as possible. Through originally studying ‘Costume with Textiles’ I found that I am much more influenced by textiles elements and make them my main focus. My work is instead much more suited to the surface design area of textiles, as it allows me to create and design for a broader range of purposes. { Skills }
Experience with industrial and domestic sewing machines Hand and machine embroidery skills Basic dye and print making knowledge and experience Able to alter, design and develop ideas through research methods to make them suitable for the appropriate context area The use of digital Amaya machines and laser cutters CAD skills in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator General dressmaking and pattern-cutting skills following experience in costume design and making I also hold a full U.K driving license.

December 2014 Grace Loves Lace Australia Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to you regarding any job opportunities you may be able to provide at ‘Grace Loves Lace’ . After searching for hand-crafted, bespoke textile design companies I came across your website and would like to find out more about your company. I am in my final year studying Textiles with Surface Design at the University of Huddersfield, specialising in embroidered textiles. I am interested in working within a part of your team as I would like to gain experience within working for a larger company whilst still creating hand-made, unique designs rather than those that are commercially produced. I would like to have the opportunity to experience the process of both designing and making a product to a customer’s specific requirements, using hand-made, innovative textiles to produce a range of bespoke pieces and designs. I specialise in embroidered textiles as I enjoy working on detailed designs, forms and patterns. My last project was based on the bloom and decay of lunaria annua, delicate seed pods that change in texture and colour throughout their biennual lifecycle. I drew influence from the bright, tonal colours and fragile forms, mixing a use of hand dyeing and fabric manipulation with elements of embellishment. I am currently working on my Final Major Project and carrying through influences of the handmade, but have become more interested in creating products that are usually seen as being quite commercial, instead designing them using a much more bespoke approach and seeing how this can be successful in industry. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Yours sincerely, Jessica Pool
