My work for me is an escape from the stresses of everyday reality taking me to a place of dreamy nostalgia. The soft organic shapes flow throughout, complimented with gentle earthy tones inspired by the natural beauty of the woodland. There is an enchanting elegance to the designs with the handsome stag wandering through the floral motifs accompanied with little birds perched amongst the flowers and butterflies. The use of light brings the designs to life; illuminating the textures and casting shadows on the surfaces creating a surreal quality and a romantic charm. I have been working with a variety of materials with different translucencies with the desire to produce contrasting surfaces that respond to light in their own unique way. I have experimented combining these materials including fabrics, card, paper and acetate with different mediums and techniques that alter their transparency; by either blocking the light or allowing more light to pass through. Layering these samples with their different qualities I have developed a series of designs that demonstrates the possibilities of changing the appearance to the surface simply by adding light or taking it away. Before lighting the design up only the first layer is visible but when adding the light to the layered designs; they all merge together to create a surface with more depth revealing the hidden images, initiating mystery and wonder.

Dawn Chorus The soft browns and gentle red glow gives the impression that the sun is rising in the distance. The little bird appears to be hidden in a shrub; surrounded by a contrast of organic textures and floral motifs.

Morning Meadow The printed twigs on the surface and the floral silhouettes in the background merge together as one design when light is introduced to the design. Almost as if the sun comes up and the flowers bloom.

Wandering Wonder The silhouettes of the woodland scene in the background are brought forward when cast on to the surface of the fabric; the shadows appear wandering around in the distance. The floral design cut into the fabric forms an organic and delicate surface that creates a contrast between the shadowed silhouettes.
