Tactile Skins People are in search of touchable textures to inspire connective engagement with exciting aesthetics. We see walls taking shape with inspiring structured textures. Fabrics have more depth to them offering an inviting tactility of layered and built up composites, rustic knitting and combined materials. Textile crafts is more visible through the use of soft techniques being applied to hard materials, giving a hand finished look to surface finishes. Faux fur, textured leathers and worked metals offer skins for interior products.

Engage and Experience

Materials are formed as a way to engage and experience, with tactile qualities and interactive elements. Textures are created to entice people to touch, soft edges and fluid lines are combined with hard materials and structured textiles to invite an interactive reaction. Chairs that offer comfort and mimic the feeling of being ‘hugged’, carpets that are combined with other materials to present a sense of confusion and packaging that has humorous qualities.

Pre-historic Future As truly fossilised rock formations become increasingly scarce (and illegal) for use within the home, faux fossils fashioned from resin and embedded in concrete will be a key combination in 2014. Rough surfaces mimicking rock formations form protective layers on new builds and interior decoration is roughened around the edges. The beauty is in the simple charm of prehistoric artefacts and unglazed pottery, with dusted colours and natural pigments that inspire evolution. Bone, worn leather and carved stone are key materials to embrace. These materials promote the idea of going back to basics, combining raw materials with innovative design, re-evaluating basic materials and proving that creativity is not entirely reliant on technology.

Unexpected Materials and Textures

Combined materials are important where textures may not be what they seem, luring us into a false sense of security. Sandwiched materials such as Perspex with bamboo, tree bark with latex and wood combined with resin are seen with unusual structures and form. Embedded fibres that enhance textures will be important to create innovative blended designs. Sustainable materials relate to the idea of going back to basics and in keeping with the raw qualities. Contrasting materials conjure thoughts of imperfection and perfection where pattern, texture and colour will be seen on the floors rather than the walls.

Protective Materials and textures are inspired by feelings of warmth and comfort which craft a sense of protection, a shield to our every changing surroundings and developing atmosphere. We see pattern created through layering and over lapping of curved shapes, quilted surfaces and padded textures that evoke a secure and cosy luxury. Materials will appear to be encased or embedded displaying the appearance of protection, while hard materials are being used with textile craft techniques. Fashion that wraps the body providing a duvet like embrace and materials that demonstrate wrapping, cocooning and cushioning.

The Craft Revolution colour palette evokes a primitive impression with a mature style. The natural rawness of the materials is seen in the palette with the notion of a back to basics luxury approach that inspires honesty and authenticity. The raw materials are the foundations of soft neutrals with warm darker shades and a brighter orange that gives the palette a sophisticated edge. 28
