The Nature of Stitch
The Nature of Stitch Walking through the woods on a cold autumn afternoon, witnessing life and nature in all its glory. High density of trees towering above as leaves fall from the sky like confetti on the ground. Layer upon layers of leaves are scattered on the floor creating a beautiful blend of vivid colours. Sunshine seeps through reflecting interesting marks on the leaves in addition to the light and dark tones. The beauty of embroidery is that the stitch flows in a similar way to Nature. Embroidery is a skill and a craftsmanship that has been passed down from centuries reflecting on time and the pattern of history. Today we live in a society where only basic embroidery stitches are being taught in schools due to the creation of modern technology. It’s important that we develop these skills so we do not lose them. The aim of this project was to develop new methods of using stitch to create a series of embroidered samples. Marketing for women’s wear Fashion S/S 15 with excellence in-depth research in both trend and colour. Experimenting with various materials to create an interesting bespoke surface with elements of stitch, creating a personal touch. Drawing from photographs brought exciting visuals which were then manipulated and applied on to fabric. The designs illustrate the story of nature; drawings of leaves inspired the colour palette and textures. Machine and hand-crafted embroidery developed a series of samples as well as using a combination of print, digital, laser cut effects and CAD techniques. A strand of concept and belief was developed into a thread of embroidery, reflecting tradition and memories that is one close to our hearts.
