ORIENTAL INDIGO

Oriental Indigo

is inspired by the delicacy of the artwork in Japanese and Chinese culture. After studying the visual artefacts, the meaning of floral motifs and their links with traditions, I developed my project using designs associated with oriental themes. I have combined different examples of oriental florals and traditional figures to showcase the delicate prints on fabric like silk, which represent prosperity, peace and wealth. Researching into this venture, I discovered the connections which all of us have when we see these intricate designs. We recognise oriental designs by familiar images such as dragons, blossom trees and traditionally dressed women which tell the stories that link with ethnicities and beliefs. My motivation and inspiration came from the designs on the oriental handmade ceramics used for customs such as the tea ceremony. These designs often use shades of indigo and these became the main focus of my collection. Within the sketchbook I started to draw oriental patterns which were found during my research. From the research, I had made observations on my findings and attempted to apply similar techniques by using verity of media such as inks, acrylic paints, indigo pens, pencils and craft knifes. These media have been great a advantage to use and apply within my initial design as they have allowed me to be more creative by broadening my mind to a more innovative way of thinking with the resources available to me. This has allowed me to develop crucial skills and has also given me the ability to generate new ways of thinking and considering how I should go about in executing my ideas. Looking into marketing and designers work such as like Valentino’s Autumn/Winter 2013/14 collection guided me to think about the fashion print placement and the shapes of my outfit and of my final product. Through scanning my sketchbook work, I used programmes like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to manipulate my designs and also digitally print my work on silk, after doing this I then designed my Oriental Indigo collection by using editable shapes of outfits from WGSN A/W 14/15 womenswear.
