The influence of a literal bird

I specialize my practice in embroidery and usually work within the context of making. For this project I wanted to create a body of work stemming initially from one of my drawings. I looked at drawings which contain detail and care as this was decided (by myself and others) to be one of my strongest assists. I quickly began to focus my work on one particular drawing, of a bird. This was created all in fine liner pen, the same media yet creating different softness’ and harness’ by the movement and the way I drew. I wanted to translate this delicate attractive mark making into embroidery. I had been researching a lot into jewellery and shapes on the body, with this influence I wanted to create a wearable item but with a softer feel- keeping an embroidery focus. My work differed in style throughout the project as I experimented with different techniques and areas of the bird. I focussed on the stitching, dissolving the backing fabric, I used straight machine stitching and free machine stitching. After using my printing technique I decided that a delicate hand stitch approach was more appropriate and attractive as well being my preferred way of working. I wanted the collar to contain detail and portray the bird quite accurately as well as being embellished and printed to cover the neck with a subtle design. I wanted the product to have a personal feel to it, a one off design with the possibility it could become part of a collection of personal unique designs. I wanted to achieve a personal goal with this project, to create a product from a literal thing, a drawing, a bird. I set myself the challenge to see if I could transform such a subject matter into an interesting collection that is innovative and wanted in the market today.

Stitch The Line’s achievements were recognised in various newspapers and websites and very proudly won a ‘Highly Commended’ at the Community Rail Awards 2013 in Llandudno. Working experience acquired from Pink Cadillac retail shop and Penny’s Pantry café. Both jobs were useful to learn basic money handling, customer service and visual merchandising skills. Fully Qualified Lifeguard with first aid training

I have worked with woven, printed and embroidery areas so I’m familiar with the makeup of interior products. I love to purchase creative fabrics and objects for around the home as well as looking online, around shops and markets for eye-catching new designs. I love to be creative even in my spare time, I draw any detailed objects that catch my eye and I like drawing animals from photographs. I make small personal things such as rings, using my attention to detail and I love painting my nails with nail pens. I’ve taken classes in pattern cutting to learn the basics, and from this I made a few pieces of clothing for myself which I still wear today. I enjoy going out for short walks with my dogs, socializing with friends and family, going to art exhibitions, craft fairs and small local markets. I also simply have to carry a camera with me so I can take plenty of photographs of anything that captures my eye or draws my attention, but mainly to capture moments that are personal to me. I also spend time on social networking sites, keeping up to date by following crafters, practitioners, bloggers and venues such as New Designers.
