[Geometric Woven Designs] [Nat alie Hague]
[Geometric Woven Designs] Natalie Hague – natalielhague@hotmai l.co.uk For my first project into final year, I wanted to experiment and be open to ideas to allow me to create designs and collections that would benefit my final major project. I believe it was important to be able to experiment outside the box from my previous projects and designs to see if another style worked for me. I had previously used quite clean colour palettes, limiting myself to more natural shades. I always created outcomes I was proud of and linked in well with my collections. However, I thought this project was important for me to confirm that I had strengths elsewhere and it gave me an opportunity to experiment with lots of different colour palettes and techniques. A key driving force for me to focus on geometrics was looking at the current economic situation. With money being more scarce, people are less likely to be decorating their houses as often. When they are doing so, they want to ensure the room design will maintain longevity and be appealing in many years to come. The benefit of geometric design is that those who wish to update their interiors can make an impact with just a few additions of geometrics or can choose to take it a step further by adding even more to create more of a dramatic effect. People can choose to use a few expensive items, which can add life to a room or can decide to use a greater amount of more affordable products depending on their taste and budget. I decided to take my geometric trend in three different directions: Subtle & Sophisticated, Striking & Eclectic, and Dramatic & Impactful. Details of the collections show in the following press pack.
[Contents] [Subtle & Sophisticated] [Striking & Eclectic] [Dramatic & Impactful]
[Subtle & Sophisticated] This collection is based on Eleanor Pritchard’s work. To create such
effective and innovative designs, I chose to maintain a simple colour palette. These designs convey a subtle look to geometrics but still create a ‘wow’ factor I am proud of. I can see these designs fitting well into a room to add sophistication giving additional luxury and richness.
Final collection board for Subtle & Sophisticated
Horizontal stripe design with depicted pointed shapes. Stripe design having accents of lime green and bright orange.
The great sheen from the yarn gives the design some great depth and interest, creating vivid eye catching horizontal stripes. Zig zag design across is subtle yet sophisticated.
A key design from the collection. It depicts a use of extra weft working successfully with the background weave.
Extra weft technique used to create long floats on the face of the fabric adding texture and curvature to the weave.
Key design for the collection in an alternative colour way. Striking with a bold deep granite grey section to ensure boldness and depth are achieved.
Stripe design with subtle yarn shades used. Small woven detail zig zag geometric design. Perfect for customers wanting a more subtle use of geometrics.
Block triangle geometric design with the same yarn qualities and shades used in the above image.

[Striking & Eclectic] This collection is based on the designs from Missoni and the choices of colour that work so successfully. Choosing a dynamic colour palette to create lots of detail in the designs. This collection would appeal to market looking for a bolder colour palette.
Final collection board for Striking & Eclectic
Colour graduation effect on key geometric weave. The colour palette used is a key factor in this trend ensuring the colours compliment each other.
Extra weft added with colour graduation.
The reverse of the intentional face of the fabric, with distinct small detail designs using extra weft.
Bright yet subtle colour palette used with intricate extra weft technique.
I find it fascinating how these two designs are woven with exactly the same design. The only difference is the colour and yarn qualities used. I can personally see this design on a key focal stripe within an upholstery fabric.

[Dramatic & Impactful]
I wanted this range of designs to show a strong use of different yarns and colours. The key designer ‘Angela Jane Johnson’ I have based my collection around, uses deep rich tones that create an impact. The woven designs create the ‘wow factor’ I wanted to achieve.
Final collection board for Dramatic & Impactful
Impactful designs woven using different colour ways.
Woven design with a gradual change in colour from the top to the bottom of the piece. A subtler way of doing this than the images in the Striking & E clectic collection.
