MELISSA OSWALD global Spectrum
Project Statement Global Spectrum is an exploratory project of colour and pattern inspired by the lines and textures within ethnic patterns and hand made objects. The two combined have led me to create a series of surface designs that are focused around layering, texture and shape. There are many surfaces in the commercial space market that could do with brightening up to make an observers time spent there feel more inspired/fun/happy/interesting/exciting/appealing/memorable... My aspiration as a designer is to create surface designs that make observers need to double take and take a more in depth look. Colour, pattern and texture all play an equally important role in my work but in the future would like to enhance that and add an interactive quality to it to make my work memorable and unique. This is a project to reflect on the mundane routines and lives stresses, creating surface designs for people to look at as a source of escapism, a break from the harsh reality or a chance to feel inspired. The collection of samples range from intricately designed floaty fabrics to transparent pieces of coloured perspex interlock together. The perspex samples are predominantly designed for funky shop interior displays, when layered together in the light they create a spectrum of colour. The idea is for them to be purchased as separate pieces so the observer is able to construct their own formation of the ikat inspired pattern and either use them on a flat surface or be hung over another surface.
