The Sari
The indian culture is a haven for any creative mind, from the beautifully sculpted architecture, the vast mixture of religious traditions through to the beautifully crafted indian sari’s, everything is inspiring and the sari is where the inspiration for this project began. The sari in all of its glory is a beautifully detailed shawl worn by many of the females in India, the vibrant mix of colours with subtle hints of gold allow the palette to be excitingly eye catching yet still have the touch of luxury which the gold brings. The patterning is often repetitive and features baroque-like shapes with hints of the swirled henna details which reflects within the details in the knitted fabric. Experimentation was the key with this project; this allowed room to explore different colour palettes before finally settling with the feminine orange and pink hues with subtle hints of yellow gold to add a touch of sparkle to the collection. The colour palette very much reflects the spring/summer season in which the designs are created for.
The experimentation began at the roots of the collection, where the ideas began to develop within the sketchbook; line drawings reflect the designs found within the mehndi designs, mixed with water colour splashes using the pops of vibrant orange and pink to add colour. As a commercial collection the designs were created with the intention to be used within knitted beach kimonos marketed at the young ladies who fill the beaches of Ibiza during the long summer months proposed to be sold at high street level. The techniques vary throughout the designs, but all are very intricate with many pointelle designs ranging from smaller detailed areas to larger more open worked areas. The designs are aimed not only to be highly detailed but also to be incredibly wearable.
