INTRODUCING UNIQUE EMBELLISHMENT BY SJG Unique Embellishment by SjG is a collection which explores the combination of two handcrafted arts. Embellishment and hand knitting. Inspired by the ‘Sweet Scene’, U n i q u e E m b e l l i s h m e n t c a n e n h an c e t h e d e t a i l a n d b e a u t y o f a s i m p l e g a r m e n t a n d i n doing so, achieve a unique and edgy image for an individual. The embellished designs created within this collection are handcrafted samples made to specifically enhance an already made garment to the desire of the customer.
DESIGNERS STATEMENT OF INTENT E M B E L L I S H M E N T
C O L L E C T I O N
This embellishment collection grew from the drawings I created inspired by garments. I exaggerated and enlarged the lines and movement that I could see in close detail. I began to search through trends and was immediately attracted to the ‘Sweet Scene’, a trend filled with feminine elements of soft blues and baby pinks; I decided this embellishment collection would be pastel inspired. After looking at the imagery I was also drawing from, I noticed the fabrics were manipulated into shapes, ruffles or pleats, this also being a detail in which I feel enhances a garment. I began to think about how I could translate this kind of structure onto a hand knitted piece. So my first sample for this collection consisted yarns structured with a simple technique of picking up a knit stitch from the end of a previous row (or anywhere in between) and knitting on, continuing without particular order. I then began to embellish into the structure with a large amount of beads in various sizes, this process also moulding additional shape within my knit samples. After further sampling, I began to think about what my embellished pieces could be used for, I came across an article in a fashion magazine called ‘Head Candy’ advertising the trend of embellished head decoration. This got me thinking about the fashion industry. The samples I have created for this collection are time consuming so I decided that if I wanted my collection to sway towards fashion pieces or garments, the embellished piece would be created for an already made garment or a small accessory. Because of working so closely with beads and hand crafted techniques I have experimented creating my own beads with my own unique processes (modelled further throughout press pack)
