CATHERINE WHITAKER graphic oasis
Project Statement Graphic Oasis sees atmospheric floral and botanical imagery create striking statement artwork, which encourages the viewer to feel at one with nature. The artwork is very spontaneous; with detailed hand drawings contrasting with mixed media collage. This is a colourful, intriguing project that shows the elegance and form of the natural world. The aim of the project was to study nature, plants, colour and form through various techniques and medium such as detailed hand drawing, mixed media collage, a range of printing techniques and laser cutting. “I took a very mixed media approach to my project which seemed to be the most obvious way of working for me; I worked in a large studio space with as many materials around me as possible because of the freedom and spontaneity that this practice brings to my work. The concept for this project began when I visited the amazing ‘jardin botanica’ in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. I was intrigued by the beauty of the exotic flowers and botanical plants in the garden, and the relaxing, calming effect that they had on me. I wanted to reflect my visit to the gardens in my work therefore my first task was to start recording my experience through drawing, painting and print. I believe that the development of my drawings and sketchbook work has been the most important and exciting part of the project. You can really see my design ideas come to life and develop when you look at the drawings and artwork in my sketchbook. I was also very happy that I started to create a unique and personal style throughout the duration of this project.” Catherine Whitaker
