flora botanica sophie nolan
flora botanica This project began as a series of drawings inspired by observations of nature throughout the year; from the skeletal, brittle fragments of winter, to the delicate structures of spring and rich florals of summer. The media used included, watercolour paints, pen and ink, pencil, charcoals and pastel chalks. Initial sketches were linear in form and refined in detail, describing the blossoming forms and awakening flowers. The use of ball point, felt and ink pens captured the intricate structures and depth of colour and tone. A more painterly approach developed as the seasons changed; the heat and humid rain of summer making petals heavy and opaque. The application of deeper hues of purple and red in the imagery began, with more fluid, watery brushstrokes. Using CAD enabled the transformation of the hand drawn imagery in terms of colour, opacity, proportion and negative space. Different light qualities were considered and texture and forms contrasted.
As a textile designer, inspired by the sensory experience of touch, interaction with the tactile qualities of the natural objects collected over the summer was essential to the design process. From watching the flowers blossom, to picking them from the plant and preparing them to be dried and pressed, the textures perceived between sense and object were noted and these qualities introduced within the fabric development. The fabrics created drew influence from the soft, sheer textures of petals unfolding, curling and falling, using fine yarns, open lace detailing and lustrous fibres. These details were juxtaposed with a rich, dark colour palette, felted wool yarns and complex structures. As the fabric designs progressed their purpose and market direction became clear. The minute floriated detailing and delicate, luxurious qualities were befitting of high end hoisery garments such as tights and stockings. The project was realised in feminine, sensual and sophisticated knits, inspired by illustrative, precise attention to detail, absorbing the anatomy and transformation of floral forms.
