A note from the editor... The dictionary definition to “Upcycle” is to reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original. To me, upcycling is about more than that. As upcycling can apply to many things, not just in a fashion context, there are many possibilities within this area. Talking to different people you may hear many different reasons as to why it’s important to upcycle, but for me, here are the three main points: BE ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY Starting with the obvious - but of course, the most important. Upcycling is incredibly beneficial for the environment. Not only is it reducing textile waste but it’s also reducing the pressure for fast production that can harm the environment. What a great way to look good and save the world. (quote in middle of text) BE AN INDIVIDUAL Everything today is mass produced, so where do we show our individuality? I love to buy second hand and upcycle my own clothes as a way to express my personality. Through upcycling, you can step away from the mundane and add your own personal stamp to the clothes you wear. BE PROUD Compliments on your fashion choices are always nice to hear, however, there is no better feeling (in my opinion) than when you get to reply to that compliment with a, “Thanks, I made it myself!” That person then isn’t just saying that you look pretty in your outfit but complimenting you on your amazing skills.
