NFMy passion for design led me to start Design Works International, a lifestyle company in NYC that served as both a design think-tank and a working studio where textiles, home furnishings, and fashion come to life.
[1988-2020] My approach to design, coupled with my passion for trends, has landed me some very interesting trend projects. At Design Works International we designed everything from corporate showcases to museum exhibits and even celebrity product lines. I served as Design Director for HGTV as well as HGTV HOME, the consumer products arm of the most-watched cable network for 10 years where I provided trend analysis to multiple divisions of the company and played a crucial role in the product conception with HGTV’s licensing partners. Utilizing my retail insights, Scripps Networks extended my involvement to HGTV’s sister property, Food Network in 2016 where I worked closely with the brand providing product development on Food Network’s licensing partner, Kohls.
In addition, I was also the Design Director for Kelly Ripa Home, where I worked alongside TV host and actress Kelly Ripa to create Ripa’s design collection, featuring bedding, rugs, pillows, and furniture. I am also the designer for the collaborative, Studio NYC Design, a licensed line of home products inspired by nature and made for today’s modern lifestyle.
Most recently I am collaborating with Texworld and Home Textile Sourcing presenting Home Trend Concepts for F/W 24/25 through a creative journey including updated color palettes, pattern and materials followed by a guided tour of the Home Trend Showcases.
Being in the industry for the past 30+ years, have you changed your way in curating trends?
NFNow that consumers have become more focused on styling their homes since Covid, it’s important to look into what is meaningful in everyday life and one of the biggest changes has been bringing the outdoors indoors. This is truly a lifestyle and I see trends now becoming lifestyles vs trends which means that these design moments will last longer! As we bring the outdoors indoors we see a rise in consumer awareness on sustainable and circular products that are more mindful towards our environment. No longer is sustainable design an afterthought, it’s now top-of-mind for many consumers as well as manufacturers and retailers. As we understand this lifestyle shift moving forward, it really becomes a curation of many moments that make up these lifestyles. Bringing the outdoors indoors now means curating plants into the home very differently than ever before, so wellness now becomes a factor into this lifestyle. We now look to household plants that are good for our health, for example, allergy relief plants like Chinese evergreen or peace lily and violets. Happy blooms can brighten up your surroundings and lift your mood while English ivy, asparagus fern, and dragon tree help purify the air. Now that wellness is a big factor in the home as we curate these design moments we need to look differently at appliances, textiles, furniture, and anything item we place in the home to make sure we are making healthy and smart choices. .
How do current fashion trends affect home trends?
Home trends need to have more longevity than apparel fashion, so how to you take that into consideration with home?

NFI feel that people are what they wear and that is true when it comes to home design, so if you like colorful clothing you might gravitate to a more colorful home interior. Others that are more zen-like in their fashion might gravitate to a simpler living experience. Years ago I feel that people did not redesign as frequently but today with upcycling, repurposing, and many DIY solutions, people are updating their homes. It’s affordable to buy a few new pillows, change a duvet cover, or update window treatments. Spending more time at home has made people conscious of what makes them feel better while they are in their home so more thought is going into home design decisions and not all decisions need to be costly.
David Lee Co-Founder and Creative Director KD New YorkDavid's work is at the intersection of dancewear, knit technology, and plant based fibers.
After a professional dance career, he started his design and knit manufacturing company in the South Bronx over 30 years ago and sold through his downtown Manhattan retail store in NoHo, e-commerce web site, and other retailers worldwide.
David took a particular interest in yarns and knitting innovations. Building on his experience in apparel, small business management, and dance, David is creating a new vision for New York: an innovative fiber development hub.
Starting with Vegetable Cashmere, a new fiber David has developed and worked with for the past decade, made from by-products of tofu and soy production, KD Knit aims to establish a hub for innovative materials, based in Hunts Point near the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market.
David envisions that this manufacturing space can develop a range of plant-based materials made from plant waste and byproducts, re-establishing NYC as a garment and fashion capital.
Meet David and other industry professionals at the Lenzing Seminar Series session, The Ethos of Sustainability: The People Behind the Supply Chain, on Wednesday, July 19, 1:30 - 2:15 pm est.
